gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

when do u get to dc before the u know? if it is thursday, do u wanna come dranking? WITH MY MOM?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Also, I have been wearing the same camo canvas belt with every outfit ever (weddings and job interviews included) for, like, two years. Is it time to move on?

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

DERE LAUREL,
WHEN IS THE BACKYARD NOISE DOOD BEERBQUE BIKE SOCIAL?
THX

ddb (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Evan, see other thread for yr answer! Besides, you already know me from Chi-town threadz.

OH MY GOD Ally, I would love to meet your mom but I have no idea when I'm arriving. No word from Geeta in a while. You gotta place I can stay if I come early, instead of getting hotel for like three days?? Also have to check at work to see abt more time off. What do you want for presents, by the way, because I'm not organized enough to remember registry details.

Evan, again: if you wear camo belt with super-sharp black suit and belt is, like, yr secret concession to the Inner Bro, then rock on. If anyone can see it and/or rest of the outfit is not up to snuff, buy a new, cooler suit and keep the belt.

Brian, I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T HAVE A BACKYARD. DO YOU EVEN EAT BBQ, YOU HIPPIE? PLAN SOMETHING AND TELL ME WHEN IT IS SO WE CAN GET SHITFACED AGAIN.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

i've got a green camo and a blue camo canvas belt that i've been wearing for like 10 yrs. never move on bro.

team jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I know who you are. I was asking on behalf of Steve Shasta, North America's dominant wakeboarding personality.

Besides, we could all benefit from hearing your VERY PRACTICAL ADVICE.

xpost -- I'm keeping the belt. That first question was a TEST QUESTION.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Go on. Tell them about the foot stretching. Shin splints!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Also, don't tell my ex but I kept his Boy Scouts army-green web belt so I couldn't in good conscience advise ditching the belt even if I wanted to!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

LAUREL,
METHINX I CONFUSED GARDEN FOR BACKYARD. NEXT THURSDAY, NZ DOOD SHIT FACERY!!!!!!

ddb (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Hi Laurel, again! OK don't worries too much about the showing up early thing I mean keep in mind my mom will be drunk and there at the main event too, that's how she rolls. I don't want to ruin your life with stress over this!! A hotel for 3 days is a lot especially if not splitting, I can see about helping find a place to stay but seriously don't stress too much!! You do NOT need to get me presents but if you were GOING to get me a present do NOT get me a fondue set as I am getting 2 of them apparently.

So, uh a question, what do you think about this:
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&BRN=1&sku=10651638

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

B: Oohh, I geddit re: the garden. No worries. But can we make it Friday, instead? Thurs I can't be anywhere until 10 pm because of rehearsal (shin splints central!) and anyway it's a school night.

Ally I wd love to come early but you're going to be super busy, aren't you? I'd just be in your way, unless maybe I can come Fri night & make the rehearsal dinner or at least post-dinner moral support (read: vodka gimlets in the hotel bar) and crash somewheres. I have no thoughts on pizza stones, YOU'RE the cook around here!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

oh if u wanna come Friday to the rehearsal dinner I'll add you. I plan to make that as quick a painful experience as possible. Did I tell you they are now seeking to CHANGE THE MUSIC IN THE RESTAURANT??? Because I guess mariachi music is inappropriate for Mexican food or something.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

that's not a question. do you wear the boy scouts belt??

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

All the time! In a pinch I could always use it as a climbing harness. Well, if "the pinch" included me losing about 30 lbs.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Dear Laurel,

Where did I leave my cigarettes when I came home (drunk) last night?

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: (ex machina), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Are you sure you didn't let gurls smoke them all and then forget about it, Jon? Anyway, smoking is bad for you.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

no, i bought a new pack last night and i remembered thinking I BETTER PUT MY SMOKES HERE *passes out*

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: (ex machina), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, doll, have you searched the apt? What are you doing tonight? I could use both a nap and a drink, not sure how to combine the two.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

who was the person who passed out and woke up holding a chicken wing and a bottle of bourbon? phil 2?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that story! It sounds like Phi, though. Laurel fun fact: I have never passed out (falling asleep in yr own bed doesn't count, right?).

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't know how that could be anyone OTHER than Phil!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Dear Laurel,

I've never posted on the noize board/bored before (well, once before, but I was banned) but you're here, so it can't be all bad or over-pickled. Should I continue to post on the noize board/bored or is it too aggro for me?

Sincerely,
Amanda

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Daer Laurel,
When I come to NY, can we revert to twee selves for a bit and go bike riding with picnic food in the bike baskets but then later drink vodka drinks on a patio and find a show centred around two giant amps, a bass and an old roland?
Sincerely,
Robyn

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

I could use both a nap and a drink

This sounds like a hussy talking.

Anyway, I am game for anything since Valery is coming tomorrow and I need bro time.

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: (ex machina), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, please stay! It is a little aggro but you can tell people to mind their own beeswax. It is pretty pickled, though, and there's a slight haze in the air most of the time.

Rrobyn, you're the guest and we will do as you please. I have a favorite bar w/ patio already picked out but I don't know what a Roland is -- maybe you'd like to pick a show?

This sounds like a hussy talking.
Hello, my name is Laurel -- have we met? I have to go home and rest these weary eyes. I'll call you later if you think you'll answer the phone this time.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:56 (twenty years ago)

yaay! (we should also pretend to drag race, haha.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

hi rrobyn, let's have a band! do u play bass? i play roland jp-8000. it is not old but you'd never know b/c it is like a digital remake of an analog synth. i want to have the most bitchin feedback laden girl band ever.

dear laurel,
hi.

killy (baby lenin pin), Friday, 10 March 2006 23:00 (twenty years ago)

i don't know if we can have a band over the internet! maybe such thigns are possible in the information age? (i was having band fantasies as i was walking around today. they involved me with a moog but also a bass and also yelling/poetic-droning. there were other people in the band too, which i thought was healthy of me.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 March 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

omg we have to go play music when i come visit you.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 March 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

this was phil, yes. his last words that night, while holding both, were "time to go to bed."

gbx (skowly), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Haven't the faintest, dearie. Maybe you could ask Ian?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Dear Laurel,

Usually when I see you, you have your hair pulled up in some fashion. How do you get your hair pulled up so neatly, without "bumps" and icky sticky-out-bits all over the place?

Sincerely yours,
Ms. Allyzay Rofflesberger

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, important stuff! I think it's because my hair has no natural curl/frizz whatsoever, Ally. Also, it pulls back more smoothly when it is very clean, which is about once every three days. Are the sticky-outy bits an ongoing problem?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh see, I have always thought that--you get these stupid articles from hairdressers claiming you should leave your hair FILTHY and that way it is easier to put up, but that's bollocks, isn't it? If I leave my hair dirty at all it's like 17 times worse, which is why I insist on washing my hair every day unless I'm hungover real bad. But yeah, the sticky outy bumps are an ongoing problem. I don't have very thick hair but it is kind of curly :(

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

how do you leave your hair dirty AND use product? impossible i think

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh, clean hair is smoother but that's exactly why it doesn't stay where it's put: it will tend to slip out of fasteners much more easily than hair w/ slight coating of oil, which is why they say not to wash before a "do".

If you have curly hair why not go with style that's not pulled tightly back? A bunch of loose waves caught up at the neck with a jeweled comb or etc might be nice. Bobby-pin the shit out of it, invisibly, and stick the decorative comb/flower/etc where it will cover the pins.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it's complicated. This isn't for a special event, fuck doing my hair up for events, it is for just not having to completely blow dry and iron my hair on a daily basis, it's easier to put it in a pony tail but gets bumps...and it's not even really curly. God so stupid, WHY DO I HAVE HAIR EVEN.

and yeah hair dirty + product is a consumer nightmare.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

ewww i hate the sticky product/dirty hair. ally you could try drying with a ceramic brush which will get it nice and smooth before you pull it back. maybe that would work, i don't know.

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

ooh nevermind you don't want to blow dry.

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

The thing is my hair is not in great condition now from all the blow drying and straightening so I'm trying to be nice to it :(

I'm just going to cut it off, I think.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Ally, sight-unseen I recommend you find a stylist who will experiment until you find a way to work with your curl. Curly hair is nice. People who think their hair is frizzy are usually overly paranoid about it.

OR XP: cut it all off into a matchstick pixie thing and start over! Yeah!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah the thing is my hair is unevenly curly, to get it to actually look curly (frizzy or smooth) involves effort and product too. SOOO I been straightening it forever BUT alas my hair is the consistency of spider webs so now it is in ICK condition. I'm gonna hack it in 22 days.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Thank you for your support and assistance, everyone!

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

can any man blow dry and feel good about himself? saturday night fever?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

oooh pixie cuts are cute!

and i hate the frizz thing... i want no more bleach to touch my head for years even if it means i will have flat, monotone hair (but really that's not even necessary...there are plenty of colors without bleach, damn it! why don't hairdressers realize this!!?!?).

i have found that spraying your hair with a heat protector (like the kms one) and using something like bed head after party to smooth out your final look works well and is not too heavy or greasy.

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Cutty, you could try blow-drying and let us know how you feel in the morning...? I haven't seen the movie "Saturday Night Fever" so I'm not sure what that's in reference to.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

you've never seen 'saturday night fever'!?!?!?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Yawn (Wintermute), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Jack Cole (jackcole), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's kind of crazy! (even i have been punished in such a way.)

I am so hopeless with bobbypins. How can I work a computer and a bicycle and a stereosystem and not understand bobbypins? I am a prime bobbypin candidate too.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen it, either! I own the soundtrack on vinyl, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, Robyn! I'm tech-stupid, don't let me near electronics, but mechanical stuff I can handle. Possible tip: bobby pins need something to be stuck INTO. They'll hold better if there's a twist or braid or some kind of knot of hair to anchor them.

Do you have lots of hair? I have big flat pins that I love, could send some around.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i used to have to blow dry to prevent mine from fliping...but now i found a better trick...only cleaning every other day also helps things go in the right direction.

my ex had curly hair. less regular washing and product definately helped her curls do decent things, rather than frizzy lunacy...but her hair was reasonably short too.

bobbypins are damned slipery! that might xplain it.

bb (bbrz), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i once got pwnd by a wigmaster for using flat bobby pins. and i thought they were all cool and sleek! when my hair was longer, i loved those giant ones, though!

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

wigmaster!

gbx (skowly), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Perfect Hair Always 101:

Step 1: Get pixie cut a la Jean Seberg in Breathless.

Step 2: Let it grow out until the dunking-your-head-in-the-sink method of hairwashing does not equal perfect hair.

Repeat Step 1 & 2 for the rest of your life.

ahahaha, that noise estrogen thread is roffleland.

but okay, hair... I do have lots of it these days, L! But have spent most of my adult life with short hair, so don't have a lot of long-hair xperience. But really the thing is I don't have hair patience. I think I do have a couple of those big flat bobbypins somewhere though. Am still confounded by those little ones that are open - have tried them but they fall out quickly. I feel like putting my hair up for real (i.e., to look "nice") is a job for professionals. I have never had this done, however.

My question: when putting hair up then, hair goo stuff or hairspray? (i hate hairspray)

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Dear Laurel,

Where does your tendency to abbreviate people's names come from? I'm especially interested in some of the idiosyncratic liberties you take -- "giboyeux" becomes not "gib" but "Jib" and "Kelsey" becomes not "Kels" but "Kelz." Also "Jocelyn" --> "Joss."

Cheers,

"Jay"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Dear John,

You may have noticed that I've been getting better! Unless you catch me off guard, in which case it's gonna be "Jay". That one is your own fault, Mr Confusing Screen Name.

Um, because the first syllable of "giboyeux" is not hard G as in "gibby" (and thank goodness for that), it is "jib" as in the sail or maybe "zheeb" if you're being very Frenchy about it (although I don't know any French so don't ask me). So all of the shortenings you mention are based on sound, not spelling. Um, surely that's apparent? It's basically just a projection of my in-person liberties and excitability. Oh, and Kelsey's "z" was stolen from the noize bored, no two ways about that.

XP to Jib: Does it have bearings that need greasing, or something? I mean, this bike is probably several decades old and never had any work done, it still had original TIRES on it.

Yes, B, I should have known better when all the service manuals said "SEE BIKE SHOP IMMEDIATELY STOP DO NOT TRY AT HOME STOP ." I think it might have been too late by that time. ANYWAY! Those days are behind me, now.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

When you said crank, I'm guessing you meant bottom bracket. In which case, yeah, it wouldn't hurt to overhaul it. This, however, requires TOOLS and KNOW-HOW.

Houdini Gordonii (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Dear JMZ,

You can buy a tape measure that is made especially to measure your pony’s weight. Wrap the tape around the pony’s girth, which is the area around the body about 4" behind the front legs. Measure around the girth area and up around the back, just behind the wither. The tape measure is marked in pounds rather than inches so it’s very easy to read how much the pony weighs. Most adult ponies weigh between 400 and 700 pounds.

Dear Ally,

What's the wrong way to swallow water?

Dear Lauren, my noize name-sake.

Apparently the equations for figuring the body weight of miniature ponies involve lots of arithmetic and fractions and things that make my head hurt to think about. They also did not display correctly when pasted so I'm afraid I cannot supply all math here.

Dear Jib,

I'm sure you are, dear; I don't imagine there's much demand for ponies as ski instructors. Besides, they always fall getting off the lifts.

laurel, why is it that i can write 2000 words with no problem but this 100 word intro paragraph that needs to be done by 6 is SO DIFFICULT?? tell me i need to read more stories and less circuitous academaprose. the stories can be about ponies.

Arbin, I don't know! -- I write as little as possible, but I usually chalk that up to my being incredibly lazy and in the scheme of things, reading is easier (except of course Foucault). Limited Liability Professor sez read more YA novels! Right after you finish your intro para.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

Jergs: I'm a little afraid that beer + tomato juice + the tinny-ness of the can will = the taste of menstrual blood. But I'd give it a shot, I guess.

Morbs: I dunno, the oracle of LP hasn't responded to my burnt offering yet.

that chelada beer isn't terrible, it's just way too big and you're never gonna wanna finish it. last weekend my friends and i made our own Bloody Buddies. small can of bud (which is what we usually drink), clamato and tabasco. was great.

jaxon, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

t- duh. Yes. I don't have homework but I'll buy wine and drink in solidarity wichoo.

2nd point: Also yes but we still needs to have convo about yr bike first, or I will show up with all the wrong stuff.

Laurel, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

When my father was in the Air Force he did some stint in the south and was horrified to witness people voluntarily ordering beer+tomato juice in the same glass, so I guess this is an old tradition of sorts? (this would have been circa early '60's.)

Also, I've heard tales from friends which involved elderly (and possibly borderline alcoholic?) relatives drinking beer plus milk in a single serving.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

it does

laurel, why is there so much lying in capitalism? it hurts me in my heart and makes me wish i did not believe in things which also hurts me in my heart. when will we escape?

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

The background was both better AND worse when it was behind the text as well. Less readable, though.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I've been delaying answering, rrrobyn, because I don't know what to say. My job is also sensitive to sales numbers & markets, and we get screwed over by those who precede us in the production chain, and we're not considered to be "doing our jobs" unless we're willing to screw over those who come after, and cheerfully. I hate it. It makes me feel very very bad, frustrated and fatalistic, and then people many levels over me start complaining about my attitude. This is why I don't make real money, I think, because they all think I'm not a "team player". I hate them.

How can I follow orders from people who are basically ethically corrupt and wrong in the heart? I don't want to move any closer to the executive level ever, but then my career goes nowhere. I am troubled too. When can we buy a house in the desert and start really living?

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Also making me go blind with anger: willful irrationality, ie "I don't care that it's not mechanically/physically/logically possible and makes no sense, do it my way. And because you argued with me, welcome to the shit list."

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

I've been delaying answering, rrrobyn, because I don't know what to say.

there's lying in capitalism because it's a man-made construct. people lie, their economic philosophies don't dictate that.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

fuck people

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

aw but i wish i could really say that with conviction, but i can't

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not nec anti-capitalist, but capitalism at this point is a man-made concept that endorses and rewards lying. if capitalism, theoretically, is about competition and progress and providing the best and most necessary things b/c of that well hey fine but obv that's not what it is in reality.
i have too much faith in all the non-sociopathic people to believe that our human nature is prone towards deception - or in fact that something called human nature even exists - but rather the systems we put in place become symbiotic to us even when they stop working for the majority of people. why should disappearing middle class and hello crushed-promises-of-american-dream misery be allowed to happen? when $100,000 to one person means as much as $100 to another person, wtf is going on?

is capitalism really the 'economic philosophy' of people, at this point, because to me it's the sea we have to swim in with the too-often fading hope of making it to some illusory shore.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

which is why i wld rather be frustrated while trying to change things than be frustrated actively being a continuation of more of the same. working towards altering this situation, of course.
this has been a really cranky couple of weeks!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

capitalism at this point is a man-made concept that endorses and rewards lying

as is democracy. both are the best of bad options. human beings aren't really wired appropriately for either.

Note to KT: EVERYTHING took longer than I thought it would. And when I thought I was done I realized we were out of cat food, and the people can't come back at 7pm from Australia once all the stores are closed and be OUT of CAT FOOD. So I had to walk to the special pet store with the organic shit and buy some more. I am so over pets.

Talking about the crimes of Hamas is a smoke and mirror comment as the Palestinians are an occupied and embattled people. The original sin is being committed against them. We will address their crimes once Israel has cleaned up its act.

I guess I don't understand the parameters of what people consider "anti"? Like, at all. But I don't know anything about whatever is commonly considered coded or loaded language, so I'm probably missing the point repeatedly.

And it's weird, b/c you know I grew up Evangelical and they LOOOOVE God's Chosen People, so I've always been sort of...admiring.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

and what, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

Well, in terms of quality of life and shit, particularly attitudes toward women, living in various hasidic neighborhoods in NYC, especially the last one with a really conservative and unfriendly sect, has totally brought me down. I know these groups are considered crazy, I mean, ultra-orthodox, and do not represent the mainstream, but I definitely take a certain active pleasure in being offensive to them just by my EXISTENCE in their field of view. But I wd feel the same about any oppressively conservative group, and in fact I DO feel that way about conservative Christian viewpoints also.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

Also I wd not describe myself as being very pro-Zionist, altho that's another area where I don't think I grok the code. I mean, Israel exists. So does the US. I don't want either of them to NOT exist but I think our stance on illegal immigration is revolting, and I'm not crazy about how Israel treats people who used to live there either. How is that anti-Semitic??
