i don't hate chicago! I'm just not a fan of how low and broad and un-urban it is. And flat. And segregated. And the bad weather. And the fact that you have to go like a million fucking miles to go skiing/climbing/camping/whatever.

I always crush on NYC when I'm there, though, for sure. But the people, the rent, and the attitude in Chicago are pretty great. Plus, the segregation has at least some upside: Pilsen and the Ukrainian Village are totally cool.

But when I think of "cities," I think of NYC, London, Paris, etc. My neighborhood in Chicago is too quiet and, uh, neighborhoody to feel like a city.

im on google satellite and i guess it was olive, can you go inside that one? i remember it as being fenced in by houses, not streets. maybe i was thinking of a grassy backyard bbq or something..

i also remember going to that side of town at 7am on a sunday morning to a viewing party when these massive oil/gas tanks got detonated.

that park is on olive...i used to run there when i would go running...theres the biggerpark just by..with a track.

speaking of those towers...i was over by the site of those towers shortly after they took them down...just looking in. cop rolls up and tells my friend and i to "move along"...now i know why

i dont remember how we got there..we were just walking around...and got to a big fence and a big clearing with craters and were just like, WTF! goes on here and then the citys finest sent us on our way.

Today at the grocery store off Graham a stockboy stopped me and asked me in heavily accented English (multiple times, I might add, as I was wearing headphones) "WHAT IS LIFE?" I realized after a few weird seconds that I had a box of Life Cereal in my basket. I don't know if that made it less irritating or more.

as i understand it (my best friend is a mormon), it's sort of like a service project. it's like being a monk for two years. so you don't necessarily spend all of your time proselytizing - my buddy spent a lot of the time doing things like helping elderly or down-on-their-luck mormons, attending study groups w/ other missionaries, and so on.

actually, i don't think it's such a bad idea and in a way it sort of matches the military service model of a lot of social democracies. you join the "army", and you go live for 1 or 2 years w/ other young men your age and learn how to live on your own and spend your time doing service projects and stuff. w/o the religious baggage i think it'd be a good idea for everyone.

all LDS are mormons, but not all mormons are LDS.

the LDS is the "mainstream" group in salt lake city with the big church and all that, but there are lots of fringe lunatic mormons in tiny orthodox sects all over the country. these are the guys that do shit like have six wives and hoard weapons and things.
