A new performing arts program at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Whitney Live takes place every other Friday in the Lower Gallery at 7 pm and is free with pay-what-you-wish admission.

Matmos is M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. In their recordings and live performances over the last nine years, Matmos has gained an international reputation for combining cinematic ambience, abrasive techno, polyrhythmic programming, and textures sampled from a wide range of musical inï¬‚uences and nonmusical sound sources. Some of their wildest sounds have included ampliï¬?ed crayï¬?sh nerve tissue, contact microphones on human hair, ï¬?eld recordings of conversations in hot tubs, frequency response tests for defective hearing aids, and the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun. Their composition L.A.S.I.K., based on the sounds of laser eye surgery, was featured in the Whitney Museum of American Art's 2001 digital art exhibition BitStreams. Matmos recently completed a tour with Bjork, and their latest project, The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast, is scheduled for release by Matador in April 2006.

unless it's set up differently this biennial, they're performing in the basement (unclear if the Philip Morris building is involved).

theres 100-200 seats at round tables, pretty much unlimited room to stand beyond that. theres overpriced beer too, if memory serves.

Friday 1–9 pm (6–9 pm pay-what-you-wish admission)

here's the kicker, everyone goes to the biennial during pay-what-you-wish, so its possible you could get there at 6:30 and still be in line outside an hour later. i'm not sure if they have to stagger admissions due to max occupancy sizes, but its a slow line.

i got there at 5:30 as it was my only chance to check out the show. ninja puff seemed to be following me around the 4th floor gallery with his bullhorn. i felt bad not saying hi, but i didn't want to interrupt his schtick with "hi i barely know you from teh internets".

the art sucked so bad that he was one of the better inclusions(!)
