Cerrone IV is the rock one...Rocket in the Pocket has some serious guitar slinging. Played at 45rpm it's some sort of break classic as well.

it's so good. this guy's got maybe four records that are his best record.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

I mean seriously. I wonder what it would take to pry him from France and be in a band that covers Yes but plays like the Band. Actually, except for the Yes covers part, that's the band I want to be in.

Cerrone did so much more, Malligator was a whole stable...check out Don Ray, Kongas, Max Berlin. I really rate him with Moroder and Cowley, really among the best electronic disco ever and a true pioneer. Check out his vids on youtube as well, totally hilarious.

But what am I obsessed with today?

Where'd you get feelies?

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

i only like them because they're 'African-American'

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

also, said bass player..MAY OR MAY NOT have gotten BUSY with CUTTY'S SISTER!!!

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

i got yr crazy rhythms....

http://www.igetrvng.com/shop_mx4.html

I sold 33303030203034 cross dressers for 3030302023030 $$$$$$$$

I am listening to Abwarts, Metabolist, Monitor and Asmus Tietchens mp3s. Also Magazine and the first 3 or so songs on the Mick Ronson lp above. Only After Dark was one of those "wait, I know this song" moments....till I realized the Human League covered it. Killer. My new schtick is the obsession with this album and Iggy Pop's solo stuff as David Bowie records with less Bowie and more Rock.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

LAUREL: I do recommend torch of the mystics. it's great. download it. but i don't know if you'll like it, really.. i figured you for more of a sleek pop girl. what's sparked yer interseted in SCG? I love that band, though. That's probably a better one to start with than a lot of the others, though. It is considered to be (one of) the classic(s).

on a similar note, who wants to tape me the Jack's Creek LP?

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ian, you dear, I am a pop girl. I will try SCG again on a slow day when I am feeling chiller than I was yesterday.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Today is brought to you by the bands Shellshag and TJSA, the latter for Lauren.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'll sell you Jack's Creek. Is it worth a lot?

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm trying something lalbelled "Shelley/Devoto: Buzzkunst" but it's too repetitive & unmelodic for me, I think.

perhaps a mod could delete it, or maybe leave it there.

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 4 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel you should be listening to Magazine's the Correct Use of Soap instead

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 May 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I will...make a note. Have never heard of! Why don't more people on my office itunes share have music I actuallY WANT TO LISTEN TO???

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

"Shelley/Devoto: Buzzkunst" was the first collaboration between Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto since Devoto left the Buzzcocks and formed Magazine. Magazine's 3rd record, the Correct Use of Soap, is one of the best new wave/post-punk/whatever albums of the early 80s. Catchy as hell.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm game!

V.U. "white light/white heat" which made me uptight & gave me a headache on the drive in, but is still great, esp mo tucker's clockwork machine drumming on "sister ray". Also, "could it be the poh-liice"

Steve Hackett 1st 2 solo albums "Voyage of the Acolyte" & "Please Don't Touch". Lotsa good bits, but a bit eh overall. Probably a mega hit if yer mellotron fetishism is such that yer willing to overlook the odd bit of musical weakness. Makes you wish he'd stuck w/genesis, though.

Herman's Hermits - Greatest Hits Vol. 3

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 5 May 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

So good that they needed three Greatest Hits LPs.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 5 May 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

Meltzer, from an early piece called "English Heavies":

"With all this interest in the Hollies nowadays (Graham Nash's fault), it might as well be brought out in the open what the Hollies had going for them: five or six pretty little nuggets over the years. Herman's songs were prettier, more nugget-like, and there were at least ten or fifteen of them that amounted to more than a hill of beans. And once (on a Leonard Bernstein reevaluate rock and roll TV special) Herman and Graham himself suggested that Donovan could save the world. So distinctions need not apply, but if you want 'em take Herman of course."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 6 May 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

wow, where?

that Vol. 10 CD is one of my all time favorites, way psychedelic. la monte young makes a lot more sense knowing things like that were floating around. that album sounds great sent through about three delays as well.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 8 May 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

My library has the whole set of those Southern Journey volumes. The best is the stuff by the Old Regular Baptists.

Unlimited Toothpicker (eman), Monday, 8 May 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

the thing i visited was a gathering of folks that grew up singing that way on occasion and special camp-meeting/singalongs or whatever. there's a few southeast denominations that sing acapella only ...so this tradition has been kept alive in those churches especially.

i'll have to check out that old regular baptists stuff.

that zombi record is good, but i can't help but feel like if this continues i'll have to pull out some yes and rush soon. i'm not sure if i can get behind that.

listening to stuff i got in the mail:

ohsees - the cool death of island raiders (dude from the coachwhips doing his psych/folk thing. WAY WAY better than the double-disc thing he put out a while back)

coachwhips - double death (dvd and cd of b-sides and stuff. i'll probably never watch the dvd)

lansing-dreiden - the dividing island (the first song is awesome. sounds a little like kemado labelmates dungen. don't know if i like the album as much as i loved the first one. probably not. but it's still pretty swank)

ignite - our darkest days (some punky thing that i will not be listening to twice. in fact, let me go take it off right now)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 18 May 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

i have no idea what you're talking about.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 May 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

ok i found it - kitty grant was what i was thinking of, apparently chas jankel did it originally. anyhow ANOTHER THING - what are some other songs like the third degrees' 'givin' up, givin' in' ie. that moroder style engine plus that fire (keyword: fire!) on top also ts: 'givin' up, givin' in' vs. 'when will i see you again' and that's basically the 70s right there right? and do the third degrees sigh on like nearly all their songs or is it specifically a 'yes yes yall remember' shoutout to 'when will i see you again' in 'givin up, givin in' and how's their other disco?

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

just the other day a friend asked me if i knew any Chas Jankel. i thought i didn't, but looked him up and realized he played w/Ian Dury (whom i love). downloaded a coupla of his solo tracks and realized "Glad to Know You" was a track i've been DYING to know for a few weeks now. was on some mix i heard recently and i love the shit out of it.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i looked up the lyrics and saw 'ian dury' and went 'woah' at first though it made total sense - them pianos plus i could totally hear him singing them "as little john said to robin hood 'there must be other ways'", the only chas jankel i know real well is "ai no corrida" speaking of which total uncanniness jbr futuredream spooky hanso touch: so i just made a "mix cd" of some stuff and have 'glad to know you' next to last track and the last track: "AI NO CORRIDA" - BEFORE I EVEN KNEW THE UNCANNY CONNECTION - IT IS AS IF JESUS HIMSELF LINED UP MY MP3's THE UNCANNY GODLINESS.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 22 May 2006 05:56 (nineteen years ago)

which incarnation of the Move? I like the earlier Beatlesy stuff though it's a bit frou-frou but I LOVE the Roy Wood/Jeff Lynne edition of the band. Shazam!, Looking On and Message From The Country are HEAVY rock cut w/orchestrated pop like some wierd cross between Black Sabbath & ELO. Basically where Cheap Trick copped their whole shtick (that's a compliment)

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Someone should make a jukebox where you dock your ipod and pay like 25 cents to play something off of it and it copies it over to the play queue

last I heard, wakhevitch was living on some remote island in the Pacific (or maybe India?), but really don't know anything. Q('.'Q) (eman), Thursday, 25 May 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

well, i like both autechre AND mop ... it's just i didn't realize they'd be all smashed up together. also what they do with the "ante up" remix is a travesty, they run it at like triple speed so it just ends up sounding like overdriven noise gabber.

basically as it stands it's like a decent-to-pretty-good mix of rawkus rap (no problems with that!) with some IDM thrown in ... only about half the blends really work ... el-p and squarepusher actually sounds good but the rest of them are sort of meh

my real problem with it is that the 2nd half isn't very good, sub dj rupture type world-beat for humorless industrial dudes.

i think i was just dazzled by how good shadetek's "heavy meckle" grime mix was ...

Does a noize dude like Cibelle (and not just the song where she and Devendra Banhart do their Tom & Elis impersonation)?

It's one of my favorite records in a very, very long time.

i bought new scott walker, new espers, and new om on vinyl the other day and i am digging it all mightily. i love them all.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

that donald duck thing on the scott album. jeezus, i just can't get over it. whoever brought up the new york ripper on that scott thread was otm. way creepy. (i find new york ripper to be pretty indefensible generally -even for me, a horror fiend who has few qualms about un-pc hooha- but the DD voice IS inspired and the one memorable aspect of an otherwise standard italo misogyny slash fest via fulci (and certainly nowhere near HIS finest hour)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 25 May 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

i finally brought armchair boogie home from work, today.
also, vince guraldi - in person

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Friday, 26 May 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

i relistened to the shadetek thing twice and realized something:

there are two kinds of mashups on this disc:

1) those that work, like MOP "cold as ice" over "gantz graf" or mobb deep/cormega over shadetek, just layer the original w/ beats over electronic noise

2) those that fail, like ghostface over "netlon sentinel" use the acapella.

there's some really bad stuff in the 3rd qtr but it gets better after that! and the 1st half is actually shit hot!

renegade bear shot by cops on frat row (vahid), Friday, 26 May 2006 05:51 (nineteen years ago)

waht is that Vertical Slit thing?

Everywhere sez this is out of print, but there seems to be loads of copies about. 'warehouse find' or something maybe, because there's loads of copies about suddenly.

First Vertical Slit I've heard, but I think it's a collection of odds and ends. Straight rock songs, pretty acoustic stuff with strings, pissing about with feedback/tapes/etc.... all really great. Comes in one of those annoying clear plastic sleeves with a way too sticky strip.

im debating between that or the somewhat generic but supposedly worthwhile for the interplay Tropicalia ou Panis Et Circenses comp.

bb (bbrz), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

it's got lots of fuzz guitar. it's mildly tropicalia influenced, but it's more a ROCK album than that.

"the somewhat generic but supposedly worthwhile for the interplay Tropicalia ou Panis Et Circenses comp."

There's nothing generic about Caetano Veloso's and Gilberto Gil's songwriting. Worthwhile for the SONGS.

Back Like That is def. the smoothest thing on the ghostface ... the rest is all over the place .... there is some '90s pete rock and some weird abstract J Dilla and some steamrollering over an entire soul song like on Pretty Toney. I dunno, there's 20some tracks on it and I only deleted five off my ipod, I like it. worth it just for the organ drone on Jellyfish.

Also, 'Be Easy' is by far my favorite track on Fish Scale; Pete Rock is something of a wizard.

who does the rap song i heard on the friday nite club remix show on the radio that goes "what you know about that?" i think that was the chorus. i was half-asleep after work at 11 pm. it had the most amazing bombastic new wave synth action in it. i was in awe. maybe it was young jeezy? i think i heard him say jeezy in it. i have to buy it. best song i've heard in ages. on the radio they never tell you what anything is.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 28 May 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i explained on the other thread that that review was actually how i found ILM.

this thing sounds more current

In 1927, renowkned painter Salvador Dali began writing the libretto for a poem-opera, Étre Dieu ("To Be God"). The opera stars the humble Dali himself in the titular role. The opera was not completed until 1974, when Dali hired Igor Wakhevitch to write the music. It was not actually performed until 2004, and then with different musical accompaniment which has never been recorded. The Dali/Wakhevitch recording was released on 3 CDs in 1992 and is very rare.

Reviewer: Musically knowing "Kevin" (DETROIT) - See all my reviews

this is the Retaliation's 2nd album. i've read that Hendrix used to LOVE this band and would often sit in and jam with them at clubs in England. no wonder- this band is AMAZING!!!
if you dig classic rock, blues, jazz, etc...you cannot loose here. the musicianship is top notch, while remaining ultra- tasteful and mature- sounding, THEY DO NOT SOUND "BRITISH' if you know what i mean. one of my all-time favorite bands and albums, without a doubt!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 29 May 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

stormy, do you like the eire apparent album as much as i do? i forget. you must though.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 May 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

you know, I've never heard it! I've always wanted to. I heard like one song off of it somewhere once, and it sounded great.

Funny too as I was a massive Hendrix freak as a kid and sought out just about everything associated with him. I even have a Fat Mattress lp.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 29 May 2006 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

jimi plays on it. very nice psych/hard rock lp.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

stormy, picked up that Trap Door comp. pretty rad. the funnest part is trying to get people to figure out what the cover says since it's written in white space. the wifee really dug it too. she said "i thought this was gonna be another weirdo psychedelic rock or prog cd", and i said, "it is, baby, it is"

jäxøñ (jaxon), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

second one down. i guess i was wrong and it's not all early.. the liner notes are interesting enough, but there's not complete session info for the cuts so it's a little hard to analyze. also, the track listing is on the back in a circle and the LP has to be tilted the proper way in the light to see it.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

face to face - "disconnected"

something tells me that deangulberry and harvell have a soft spot for this little slice of pop-punk precursor from 1993. maybe even vahid (but only during a dramatic deathbed confession).

also if JW hates jawbreaker, god save my noizeboard sole.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

i do indeed have a soft spot for that song

jewess harvell (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone ever heard this?

http://www.sundazed.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/Afterglow.gif

From Oregon, I guess. Kind of like a more frat-rock version of the Association or something, but every one of their songs was good! And the songs are SUPER SHORT. Here are the time lengths of the tracks:

1. 2:02
2. 2:30
3. 2:27
4. 2:34
5. 1:57
6. 1:47
7. 1:53
8. 2:25
9. 2:59
10. 2:31
11. 2:22

Every song but one around 2:30 or shorter, three of them under two minutes.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 June 2006 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

Chris Smither - Don't It Drag On
Ulver - Blood Inside
Jolie Holland - Springtime Can Kill You
The Presets - Beams
This Mortal Coil - Blood
The The - Dusk
Also, still listening to Klaatu-3:57 EST on a daily basis. For fucks sake.

-- electro-acoustic lycanthrope (dr.carl.saga...), May 31st, 2006.

at first i didn't like it as much as "psychedelic sounds..." but its grown on me more.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 1 June 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Ward, you have a nice job.
Stellar Regions was one of the first 'trane discs I was given back in High School (along with Favorite Things and Giant Steps)! Absolutely confusing at the time but I've since reconciled... not something I come back to often though.

Yesterday:

Tom Ze - Estudando o Pagode ... poss. album of the year stuff
TI - King... still and for awhile, I think
Sugarman Three - Sugar's Boogaloo ... nice enough Daptone
Electropolis - S/T ... good, loose electronic jazz project
Nellie McKay - Pretty Little Head ... prepping for the show, it's still uneven and still really wonderful in places
