at least they were working (hopefully). three years ago some friends wanted to do the whole parade route, we ended up in a way south section of prospect park where 200-300 cops were chilling, napping and smoking cigars while getting double time. two people were shot that year with no suspects found.

The unripened or inedible portions of the fruit contain the toxins hypoglycin A and hypoglycin B. Hypoglicin A is found in both the seeds and the arilli, while hypoglycin B is found only in the seeds[2]. Hypoglycin is converted in the body to methylenecyclopropyl acetic acid (MCPA). Hypoglycin and MCPA are both toxic. MCPA inhibits several enzymes involved in the breakdown of acyl CoA compounds. Hypoglycin binds irreversibly to coenzyme A and carnitine reducing their bioavailability and consequently inhibiting beta oxidation of fatty acids. Beta oxidation normally provides the body with ATP, NADH and acetyl CoA which is used to supplement the energy produced by glycolysis. Glucose stores are consequently depleted leading to hypoglycemia[7] .

― sanskrit, Monday, 20 August 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)
i am ok with ass grabage i usually think that kind of thing is hilarious as long as it doens't happen in crowded subway trains where you are pressed against the dude's junk for 10 minutes.
i have been female-to-male assgrabber so i can't really complain
― bell_labs, Monday, 20 August 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)
if i can "tssk" them for grabbing or just give a saucy look it should be fine.

sunday = costumes, childrens parade monday = crowds, more costumes, soundsystems
this carib woman at work told me about something i've never known about, apparently there is an impromptu parade kicking off at midnight on sat at grand army plaza. it is a "no electricity" parade which is all steel band, no soundsystem, no lights, people cover themselves in flour, and walk to flatbush. its sort of kicks off the whole thing.
― sanskrit, Thursday, 30 August 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)
either that or she was fucking with wite boy.
Actualy that sounds even better than parade...??!?
― Laurel, Thursday, 30 August 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

there is. my boyfriend saw it years ago when it was filmed as part of a movie that he was working on at the time (br00klyn babyl0n). he said it was NUTS.
― lauren, Thursday, 30 August 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)
in fact, i almost posted something about it but figured that no one would believe me ("and then they cover themselves in white stuff and march on grand army plaza!").
― lauren, Thursday, 30 August 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

so excited guys!
― bell_labs, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)
so tell me if I'm wrong but this seems to say the flour thing is at 2 am Monday (ie late-night Sunday) .... Monday is "Carnival Day," right? this is from that site Morbs linked to above.
J'Ouvert
J'Ouvert, or jour ouvert in French meaning daybreak, began in Trinidad in 1937. Today J'Ouvert is also celebrated in New York as a predawn festival on Carnival day. In keeping with tradition, steel drums are the only forms of music that will be played. Revelers in J'Ouvert wear costumes also, but unlike Carnival day, J'Ouvert costumes are inexpensive and are often creations that mock political issues, celebrities, and prominent events. The predawn celebration begins at 2am at Grand Army Plaza by the Library, travels through Flatbush to empire Blvd, and ends on Nostrand Avenue and Linden Blvd.
― dmr, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

― Laurel, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
the article Lauren linked also says "held in the pre-dawn hours of Carnival Monday ... "
unless there is a smaller j'ouvert on Saturday night or something ... ?
― dmr, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)
no, it's the same thing.
― lauren, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

― dmr, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

right, exactly.
― dmr, Friday, 31 August 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

― bell_labs, Saturday, 1 September 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)
Everyone is headed to Tavern. I think we make it at like 9 or 9.30 too! For later drinks (whoops just typed "drunks") there is of course Freddy's.
― Laurel, Sunday, 2 September 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)
I am sorry I missed the concert but am I the only one who balked at paying $35? Ended up at Freddy's anyway with a friend and got several rounds of drinks for the both of us for less than the admission price. PBR, but then we were both well gone well before the fucking concert anyway.
Oh, shit, left half of a six-pack of Coors Light in a black plastic bag somewhere off of Vanderbilt behind a tree. If there are any desperate masochists out there, feel free to investigate. Apparently it is some sort of Wisconsin thing. I am from the midwest also but I still don't understand.

― Laurel, Monday, 3 September 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)
sorry i didn't text anyone, wasn't sure how long we'd stay on the parade route.
caught a few soundsystems, got a fried shrimp plate with plantain and doubled back the fam onto washington.
#1 fashion plate of the day was hip hop dude w/ biceps as big as my neck, rocking chains, backwards baseball cap, and a morissey t-shirt.
― sanskrit, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)
i saw exactly 0 steel bands but many soundsystems and shiny bras and feathered asses. also i ate a pumpkin roti and some jerk chicken.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)
Her roti scared me off from trying them cos too many smushy un-ID-able things were added. I had curry chix instead and rice & peas and NOM NOM in the hot sun. Next year, though, we go to j'ouvert.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)
