J'Ouvert

J'Ouvert, or jour ouvert in French meaning daybreak, began in Trinidad in 1937. Today J'Ouvert is also celebrated in New York as a predawn festival on Carnival day. In keeping with tradition, steel drums are the only forms of music that will be played. Revelers in J'Ouvert wear costumes also, but unlike Carnival day, J'Ouvert costumes are inexpensive and are often creations that mock political issues, celebrities, and prominent events. The predawn celebration begins at 2am at Grand Army Plaza by the Library, travels through Flatbush to empire Blvd, and ends on Nostrand Avenue and Linden Blvd.

caught a few soundsystems, got a fried shrimp plate with plantain and doubled back the fam onto washington.

#1 fashion plate of the day was hip hop dude w/ biceps as big as my neck, rocking chains, backwards baseball cap, and a morissey t-shirt.

i saw exactly 0 steel bands but many soundsystems and shiny bras and feathered asses. also i ate a pumpkin roti and some jerk chicken.

Her roti scared me off from trying them cos too many smushy un-ID-able things were added. I had curry chix instead and rice & peas and NOM NOM in the hot sun. Next year, though, we go to j'ouvert.

i did not eat any goat. i should have...

melanie and i went back to the roti place cos she wanted something veg. i think be figured out that it was potatoes, beans, greens/spinach, mango sauce. it was very tasty!
