Over a cup of coffee last night, I spoke with a friend who will soon as graduate school as a chemist and eventually pursuit her doctorate.

I made the comment that she wasn't like other female college students, who would either finish college and get married or enter into fields that are traditionally female.

Game over, you lose.
by Marc Loi

You were the one for me.
You were my destiny.
I loved you more than life itself.
I prioritized you over everyone else.
It's too bad you never understood
I loved you as much as I could.
I talked about you night and day.
Too bad all those feelings have gone away.
All I wanted was to feel your warm embrace
And gaze at your pretty face.
I waited for you on my hands and knees.
Now that I am gone- you will see?
Though I wanted to be with you at any cost,
Our game of love just ended... and you've lost.

BUG POEM
by Cedar David Van Tassel (a four year old)

Buggy buggies
Come to me
For I'll find a home for you.

It will not be cold
It will not be hot
It will be moist.

It will be not too hot
and not too cold.
For I will be nice to bugs.

We don't mind bugs here.
There's no vegetables we don't grow.
We already have food to sell.

We cannot be angry for bugs.

Good bye bugs.
I'll see you later.

Bush intended to go on with the tribute to President Ford, but was cut short when a frantic Snow entered the studio, turned off the microphone and pulled him out.

The damage, however, had already been made.

and what, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

In a related story, the White House announced today it will adopt Britney Spears' rendition of "Oops, I Did It Again," to chronicle the blunders of the Bush saga.

"We'll have a team of Secret Service agents who'll follow him," Snow said. "Every time he makes a mistake, they'll start singing 'Oops, I Did It Again.'"

The Bush staff, it is reported, is getting extremely tired of the song.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

We have to be allies. You're already doing more than most guys in college do; a useful role of a male student in a feminism/women's studies class is to help the class explore male culture from a first-hand perspective. You'll be able to provide insight when talking about, in broad brushstrokes, how a guy's mind works; you can also offer a peek into the social world between guys that most women never get a chance to experience.

You also serve as an example to some of the more closed-minded students that not all men are evil misogynistic assholes.

Just make sure you don't dominate conversation in class; as a feminist activist you need to make sure women are getting equal speaking time (and equal consideration!) in organizational settings. Though perhaps the most productive thing you can do is be a feminist around your guy friends. Get them to stop using "like a girl" or "fag" as generic insults, at least when they're around you. Get some of your declared non-feminist guy friends to go to feminist events, etc.

omar little, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

I could crawl in a hole - I could be taking the easy life at school, I could have a damn easy school schedule, and I could just turn a blind eye, but I don’t. Why? Because I care about America and believe with the right education, I have what it takes to change America. I am busting my ass to build a political future, and when I do run for office, I’ll be damned if anyone questions my “motive.”

Feminist dilemma and MAXIM-like magazines.
January 11, 2008, 2:34 pm
Filed under: Feminism, feminist, journalism, men's magazine, objectification, rape, third-wave feminism
I have a dilemma about feminism and the job I just got last night – and sleeping on it didn’t help any.

First of all – let’s get the first thing out of the way: I am the shit. I get out of the military in three months, and people have been scaring me left and right, telling me there are no job opportunities.

Last night, I went to a job interview with a magazine (name withheld) and about an hour into it (it was mostly of me asking THEM questions and talking about my visions), the interviewer and I went outside for a smoke break and the next thing I knew I was sitting in their editorial meetings. The job is now mine.

It pays well, and I can sustain myself, but here lies the problem: it’s a men’s magazine. Imagine it to be sort of like MAXIM or one of the other men’s magazines.

The whole staff is consisted of men, with the exception of one women; looking at their planning/dummy sheets, I became concerned because the content seems a bit objectifying of women’s bodies. That, coupled with the fact that there are articles that seem a bit patriarchal, I kind of cringed.

The lone woman on the staff, sensing my discomfort, told me that it’s okay for me to work such a job being a feminist (she found out I am a women’s studies major through introductions) and at the same time work for a men’s magazine, just as she does …

But I am still uncomfortable with the idea of making money off women’s bodies – no matter how willing these women are willing to pose for this magazine. Wouldn’t I be contributing to the objectification of women by doing this? Does it go hand-on-hand with my feminist values?

But the person who hired me has given me free range to do whatever I want – he said he isn’t attached to the content, but rather, the money made from the magazine. This gives me an opportunity to bring in feminist thoughts and philosophies to the magazine. For this month, I am doing a few article, one focusing on STDs and safer sex practices. The other on the dilemma of it being two in the morning, and the girl is drunk – but you and her have been talking, and you want to take her home, and whether it’d be the right thing to do. There are more articles I am working on, but the fact is I can sneak my feminist views into these articles.

Because of that, I feel I am justified with this job. But I am still not happy with it.

I know I am the shit and I can walk into any newspaper or magazine, just throw down my resume, talk for a few minutes, and get a job …and I don’t NEED this job, but I feel as though I can contribute to turning this magazine into a better one instead of one like MAXIM, which is clearly misogynistic.

Thoughts?

I’ve come to the conclusion that no matter if I had fuller breasts and long, golden hair that ran out my head, I wouldn’t make a very nice woman.

It doesn’t matter if you give me a uterus, or different sets of chromosomes, or even if you made me smell nicer, or stay cleaner, I wouldn’t make a nice woman.

Hell, give me my own vagina, with its own well-built system of reproduction and centers of pleasure, and I’d still wouldn’t make a very nice woman.

I know this because I know that by the time I am 12 or 13, I will hate men.

I wouldn’t hate them for their biology; I’d hate them for their ways to looking at me.

I’d hate them for their leery eyes and roaming hands - and the way they refer to me, not by my name, but as “hottie,” “sexy,” “babe,” or a myriad of other nicknames used to objectify me.

I would hate them for blaming my anger and attitude on my being “on the rag,” when in fact it is their ways of treating me that makes me angry.

I would hate that they holler at me as I walk down the street. What, should I come over there, drop my pants and jump their bone?

I would hate that if I bring up anything that makes me upset about them, I am being a whiny bitch.

I would hate them for treating me like a princess, but instantly call me a bitch if I were to turn down their sexual advances.

I would hate them for looking at me at a vehicle for their pleasure, and not as my own complete person.

Even in their compliments, I’d hate them for pre-supposing that just because I am a smart girl, that I am unique.

I’d most definitely have trouble trusting them - for I would never knew if one was genuine, or came from a long line of those trying to get in my pants

I would hate them for not knowing what the word “no” means. It doesn’t mean continuing to pursuit me. It doesn’t mean I am playing coy. It means you’re probably a dumbass and I am not interested in you.

I would hate them for roaming at bars, even when I am talking to my friends, trying to break in to our conversations. Leave me alone! I am here with friends!

I would hate the drinks they offer as a way to “break the ice,” as if somehow I am a prostitute and they are buying my time with drinks

I hate them because they control the media and images of me are distorted to be the way THEY see it

I would hate them because images of my body are spread everywhere - some of which are mutilated, as a way to promote their products

I would hate the porn industry. I would hate the pressure they put on me to act “accordingly.”

I would hate that I cannot be myself, but have to compare myself to unrealistic standards.

I would hate the make-up, the shoes and everything else that I need for a job interview just to be successful.

I would hate that I must always be perfect, but perfection is not good enough. I am encouraged to diet more, look better, lose more weight.

I would hate that I am robbed of all that is me - that I am made out to be what the patriarchy wants me to be. I would hate not being my own person.

But, thankfully, I am not a woman. I am a man, full of privileges and free to live my life as I see fit. I am still raging mad.

I am mad that my friends, sisters, loved ones, potential lovers and future daughters are subjected to shit they’d never think of doing to a man.

I am piss-hot the people I love are viewed as objects and not people.

I am upset that most people don’t empathize with the people I love.

But thankfully, I am a man. If a were a woman, I wouldn’t make a very nice one. By 14, I think I’d be in jail for murder.

I’ll save the discussion of why porn is rape for when I get back from vacation. In fact, I’ve been visiting a lot of porn stores to research the issue of women and the image thereof in porn, examining the intersectionality between sex, gender, power, economic status, race and class - and what it has to do with porn (don’t forget age, too). But for now, here’s a picture I took a few days ago of a porn DVD cover. The sticker was bought at a feminist conference. What I’ll do is, from now on, I’ll go ahead and bring the stickers everywhere I go. If you want some, let me know. I hope everyone is doing well. I also have quite an interesting story on how I had to give my mom a speech on why when I get married, we (although I don’t know who will be my wife yet) are not going to involve diamonds. Because diamonds are also oppressive and not romantic.

At first view, this movie should be looked at as one of the greatest romantic movies of all times. But then it's not.
The movie is about a man who was murdered, then returns as a ghost because he still loved his girlfriend and wanted to catch his killer. If you could ignore the fact that there is no ghost, then perhaps you'll get over the first hurdles of this movie. But if you're one does not believe that there is such a thing as a ghost, then the movie is simply nothing but mindless entertainment.
The director of this movie, it seems, was confused as to whether this movie should be a comedy, a romance or a drama type movie. Because of that, all the elements were incorporated together and that ruined the movie. The humor in the movie was dry, the romance cheesy and the dramatic elements were anything but. As one person wrote, by the middle of the movie, we already knew what would happen next and who the murderer was.
This movie also lacks one other element -- logic. For any logical person who could think critically, this movie should be very painful to watch. Nothing they do in the movie makes any sense.
For those who are thinking about watching this movie as a movie date -- please don't bother. It's a waste of money, fake tears and if you end up liking the movie, your date *if your date is at all smart*, will laugh at you for being superstitious, sophomoric and stupid.

An amazing book by an amazing woman

Someone once said to never buy an autobiography written by someone who is still alive because it tends to be boring. They were wrong.
This book, though considered as a self-serving book by many right-wing extremists, is perhaps one most the most amazing books that came along. It gives first-eye views into the world of perhaps the second-most amazing woman on the planet. With humor, honestly and passion, Hillary Clinton describes her life from growing up in a Republican family in a small town, to becoming one of the most recognized and beloved person in the White House.

Described in her books are the many adventures, learning experiences and coming-of-age realizations during her trip to the White House. Contained in the book, too, is the story of how she and Bill Clinton met. Perhaps one of the most romantic relationships ever started, this sheds new light on the romantic relationship of the Clinton. It allows us to see that it wasn't a relationship based on politics, but rather two people who are in love, and who share a common interest in making progress in the important areas of American politics -- pushing for acceptance, family values and human rights.

For those who intend to buy this book because they want to read all the "dirt" on the Monica Lewinsky fiasco, don't bother. This book isn't about airing dirty landry for the American public to read. What it is, though, is also a description of the troubled times she and Mr. Clinton went through and how, because they loved each other, made it through.
It probably isn't a "must-read" for any political junkie, but for any freedom loving Democrat, this book inspires and makes one realize there are still good, honest, patriotic politicians in America.

and what, Sunday, 20 July 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know if you've noticed the same trends, but I am very disturbed that in the past weeks, there seems to be a rise in violence against women. The college student in New York who was abducted and killed, the man who killed his family and shot himself on the freeway in middle America, the police officer who killed his pregnant wife, and now, the professional wrestler who supposedly (and allegedly) killed his wife and child - there seems to be a rise in violence against women.

In all these news stories, the focus is always on the "investigation," but never is feminist thought applied to this - asking why the rise in violence against women? Or, perhaps, is it that the media is merely focusing more on these cases now, being bored with Iraq and having nothing to report about the violations of the Bush Administration?

I assert this: violence against women can be blamed by the culture in which we live in, the one that eroticizes violence and misogyny. What's your story? Mine is below.

I am disappointed. I am fucking diappointed. I am disappointed with them all. All my fucking life, there have only been two men I've tried to mold myself into - Bill Clinton and John Edwards. If you didn't already hear, Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair - all the while his wife was battling cancer. So, I guess all that tender and loving crap that he showed were just for show. I guess Edwards is just like others. To think - I looked up to both Edwards and Clinton - Edwards ESPECIALLY! I lost my respect for Edwards today.

You think Clinton was bad. He had a reputation for straying ...but at least he didn't fuck anyone when his wife was battling cancer. At least with Clinton, you EXPECT that he cheats.

I am getting to the point where I am molding my own political paths, without having to look up to any of these people. Do you remember that feeling of when you were a kid and realizing your parents aren't perfect or that your hero isn't a hero at all. Yeah, that's my feeling with Edwards now.

Perhaps it's the naivity in me, but I believe you can fuck whomever you want when you're not committing yourself to anyone. But if you have committed yourself, stick with it. Especially when your wife is battling cancer.

In the end, I am not America's Next Bill Clinton or John Edwards. I am going to be better than they were.

In Book of the Dead, Marino's not so secret crush on Scarpetta comes to a head. He reacts badly to news of Scarpetta's engagement to Benton Wesley, and after getting drunk and under the influence of a testosterone drug, he attacks Kay and almost rapes her. His actions lead to a confrontation with Lucy and her almost shooting him, after which Marino disappears. It is unknown if he has killed himself or just runs away as the book ends.

As for the difference in culture - why marry someone with whom you have nothing in common? Perhaps it's just me, but I wouldn't want to marry someone who doesn't even speak my own language. Marriage is about sharing the same dreams and desires, and if you can't so much as communicate, it becomes kind of hard, huh? Marriage is about an exchange of many things, to include culture, and it becomes a one-way power play when the women of third-world nations are forced to learn our culture and ways of doing things, while at the same time, have to almost abadone their own cultures to fit in. Unless you're blind, you cannot deny how ethnocentric spouse support groups are on any military base.

Mix marriages? Again, don't read into things. I've never said anything about that.

Sex assault plan fails troops

The military, it appears, is slow-learning when it comes to preventing sexual assaults.

In a world where 1 out of 4 women will be sexually assaulted by someone she knows, it is mind-boggling that the military still insists on putting the responsibility of preventing sexual assaults on the potential victims.

In front of the post exchange here [at Camp Victory, Iraq], a big sign reads, "Where is your battle buddy? Prevent Sexual Assaults, Always Have a Buddy" — as if "buddies" cannot sexually assault one another.

Apparently, the military views rape as an act that only happens at night, committed by strangers lurking in the dark. Statistics, however, indicate that just like their civilian counterparts, soldiers will be assaulted in dorms and barracks or on dates, often by someone they know.

Rather than telling women not go out at night by themselves, thereby limiting their access to the public spheres, perhaps it would do the military well to teach men not to rape, and that "no" means "no."

As well, it seems the military’s message of consent is one that’s muddled in good old-fashioned misogyny and distrust of women. Instead of telling soldiers to get consent "in case she claims rape to save her military career," perhaps the military ought to start talking about the plights of rape victims and that no human being should ever face the horrors of rape.

Getting consent, after all, isn’t about preventing oneself from getting in legal troubles, but rather, respecting the wishes of a potential partner and fellow human being.

If military leaders truly wish to stop sexual assaults, they need to revamp the current prevention of sexual assaults program; it miserably fails soldiers. Although they make strange bedfellows, the military could learn a lesson or two about rape prevention from feminism.

Twelve: Feminism is not a dating service - if you think women should fall all over you just because you're feminist, you're in the wrong movement. If, in the course of doing feminism, you happen to meet someone and you both want to date, then fine. But if you think feminism is a dating service, it doesn't need you, and you don't need it - you need to learn social skills as to not have to use feminism to get closer to women.

Kinda falls into the "not that I'd ever want to see you nude because I respect you as a person" category.

But, me? I love bitches! I love each and everyone of them, and I don't care what society says. Of my relationships, only one was with a bitch. It was good. I didn't have to treat her like anything other than a human being. We respected each other, and loved each other, but knew we didn't need each other. She did her things to change the world, and I did mine. For Christmas, she donated $100 to Planned Parenthood for me; and I donated $100 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation for her. She kicked ass.

She's only one among many bitches out there.

Hillary Clinton = a total bitch.

Gloria Steinem = the bitch of bitches.

Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch.

Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton = the foremothers of bitchery.

Angelina Jolie = the biggest bitch in Hollywood (although one would argue she's a privileged white bitch, which makes the complexities of class, race and gender the moreso interesting.)

My future wife = better be a bitch.

My future daughter = will be raised to be the biggest 5-year-old bitch in pre-school.

The next time I am on a date and decide the girl is good enough for a second date, I'll say with the utmost sincerity, "You're the biggest bitch I've ever met." I think I'd enjoy getting a black eye in a restaurant.

All of you who with whom I associate = total bitches - and if you're a male, you're an honorary bitch, and I love you all for it. In fact, I think there might be something wrong if, in the 21st Century, a woman isn't a bitch.

While misogynists very often call a woman a bitch as she is acting intelligently and s some self worth, a great deal of people use it to indicate negative aspects that all people feel are negative aspects, not just misogynists. "Can't Rape the Willing"

This is a rant on the phrase "can't rape the willing," which, in recent days, I've heard many more people say.

About a week ago, I was telling some friends about a new hair salon in the Hampton Roads area (my hometown) in which attractive stylists are hired simply for that reason, as to attract more men. "Hot chicks cutting your hair," is their selling point, and you can sort of think of it as yet another Hooter's, except there are no wings and fried pickles, or the kick-ass roasted oysters, for that matter.

In response, one of my friends wrote me back: "But is anyone forcing those women? You can't rape the willing." This, for me, shows great lack of insight on the plights of women, as well as the challenges women face economically. For this, I'll try to frame the arguments through the lens of, firstly, economic choices, and secondly, as rape itself.

Firstly: there is a difference between "will" and "desire." That is, while I am willing to follow the law, I don't often necessarily "desire" to follow the law. But my choices are limited - either I follow the law or I go to jail.

The same applies for some women who enter into industries that use their bodies as a selling point. While those jobs may not seem "desirable," some women are "willing" to take those jobs based on the limited choices they have.

If you're given a choice, as a college student, between failing out of school or selling your body, in some instances, you do sell your body. What this speaks of, then, is the lack of choices women are given - and as well, that they lack the economic autonomies to make actual decisions. Limited choices, then, aren't truly choices, but rather, something forced upon women. In some cases, I do buy into the argument that porn, indeed, is rape.

Couple women's lack of choices with societal messages of what women are actually good for, it's no wonder why some women "choose" to enter into industries in which they have to sell their bodies. I am not saying these women are making these choices out of ignorance, I am merely saying these women make choices because they have no other choice.

Is a choice really a choice, then, when it's between a rock and a hard place? Did women pre- Roe v. Wade really have a choice then? Surely, they could have had the baby and ruin their careers, they could have spent thousands of dollars to go to states in which abortions were legal, or, they could induce their own abortions, risking deaths. If we understand choices in terms of reproductive justice, then why are we still blind when it comes to women's lack of economic autonomies?

On the subject of rape, framing through the same arguments, while no one "desires" to be raped, given the choices between getting your throat cut or being raped, for some, rape is a choice - albeit not much of a choice. Given society's victim-blaming mentalities, and the heteronormative attitudes about dating and sexuality, most certainly, some women would be willing to lay there while a date or boyfriend has sex with her when she doesn't want to have sex . This, most certainly, is the definition of rape, is it not? What does this mean then?

It means, for me, that in these situations in which women are faced with making tough choices, power as well as gender and economics come into play. It also means that the next time you are decide to say that some women are making choices out of their free will, check your privilege, because it may not always be what it seems.

five months pass...

The forums feature no current gay troops, because any public declaration of homosexuality would put them at risk of being discharged. Some of the speakers are heterosexuals who support the cause.

One of those, Marc Loi of Norfolk, was featured at a Thursday forum in Norfolk. An Army sergeant, Loi has served two tours in Iraq, first on active duty and then as a reservist.

In an interview, Loi said he was moved to join the repeal campaign after seeing gay and lesbian colleagues treated unjustly.

In one instance, he said, a female soldier was sexually assaulted by a male co-worker. After she reported the attack, an investigation concluded that the sex was consensual.

That couldn't be, she responded, because she is a lesbian. On the basis of that admission, she was discharged.

"She was a great soldier," Loi said. "The military has always been a groundbreaker in equality, whether it's gender equality or racial equality. It's time to take that next step toward equality for gays."

Plan B for soldiers in Iraq
By: Amy

The following is a recent conversation between fellow contributor Marc Loi and I via Facebook. I am posting this to generate conversation about this subject because maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way? Please let us know what you think! :

Marc L is going to bring lots of Plan B to Iraq, in case an female soldiers need it, but do not have access to it! 6:03pm

Amy Twisdale at 7:26pm March 15 :um..

Marc L at 9:28pm March 15: Um?

Amy Twisdale at 9:57pm March 15: who says the female soldiers are going to be having sex in IRAQ .. and personally i think that's really their own business unless you plan on knocking up female soldiers while they're there. think before you post something marc

Marc L at 9:59pm March 15: Well, it does happen in Iraq - and around military bases in global south nations where abortions are not available. Sex is a matter of life - and suppose a soldier gets pregnant, isn't it better that she has access to plan B, since, well, the military does not provide abortions?

Amy Twisdale at 10:16pm March 15: you mentioned two things. 1. military bases in the global south- are you talking about prostitution.. in that case you should bring condoms 2. i don't think a female soldier needs you to rescue them from pregnancy. a.pregnancy is not a bad thing always b. don't you think many u.s. women are on birth control c. i don't think it's any of YOUR business to provide plan b for anyone. let them deal with it personally. i appreciate and respect your feminism, you know that marc. but sometimes i feel you go a little too far and overstep your boundaries as a man. yes i said it.

Marc L at 10:22pm March 15: Well, considering the number of military women being sent home based on the fact they are pregnant, there IS a need for Plan B. And as you say, it's not my business, but it's there as, well, Plan B should they ever need it. I merely see a need, and thus, doing something about it. It's good that you told it as is, though - because, well, it allows me to see things from your perspective. Although I have to ask: how is this any different than, say, a male politician requiring that the military provide Plan B at their medical facilities? Would HE be out of line?

Amy Twisdale at 10:38pm March 15: unfortunately the government controls such things so in this case that is how policy is created. but you're not a politician (yet) and even if you are going to bring plan b (which by the way is $40 a pill.. how many are you bringing?! you must be rich!) i feel it was inappropriate to put that in your status update because plan b... and abortions for that matter are completely personal and emotional and shouldn't be talked about like you're gonna be passing out candy. it also makes it look like female soldiers are promiscuous or something.. also, how are they going to know you have it? what makes you think anyone's going to tell you 'hey marc, do you have any plan b, i think i'm pregnant'

Marc L at 10:45pm March 15: Well, then our conversation ought to focus on how society slut slams women, right? It seems that the perception if promiscuity is a bad thing. This, I see, is both a policy issue and an issue of how we view women. Anyway, I am calling around to see which pharmacy will allow ME to buy it without a prescription. My plan was just to keep it with just Soldiers I know, both males and females. For me, this is not about rescuing anyone, but changing a culture and mindset within the military. I am not a rich man, Amy, but I do live with Spartanlike, and thus, whatever the Army pays, I can use for things like these. Thanks for pointing out what seemed like "rescuer" and "damsel in distress" situation, though - and thanks for not being mad at me. :)

Amy Twisdale at 10:47pm March 15: lol just constructive criticism i still love you marc

dude seems to have become less of a creepo and more of a proper, admirable feminist in his old age.

still, I don't think it's helpful to recast an ugly slogan like "man up" (which means something like "don't be a pussy" in its original sense) as a call to stop violence against women. while the goal of the Man Up Campaign is noble, and it's true that men have a huge responsibility to curb such violence, the phrase "man up" continues to imply that there are values/morals/strengths that men naturally hold and women naturally lack — a philosophy that perpetuates gender imbalance and, ironically, perpetuates violence against women. sometimes "taking back" hateful language can be a dramatic and effective means to combat hate, but in this case I don't think it's possible to reclaim "man up" without partly reinforcing its bigoted origins.

For political scientist Marc Loi, McCain's latest strategy in claiming everyone is his friend is a last-ditch effort at connecting with the American people - one Loi says he does not foresee as being a success.

"John McCain has made a lot of claims," Loi said from his home in Norfolk, Va. "He says he's a maverick, he is not; he says he is more women's rights, he's not; and now he says he's everyone's friend, he is not - I've yet spoken with anyone who says they are his friend or want to be his friend. You cannot go be expected to be president if no one wants to be your friend."

For McCain, Loi continued, this will be a case of both friendship and presidential ambitions denied.

Racheal,

Why talk to him at all about it? I am sure that he will be able to find out on
his own as he learns more about his sexuality. There are certain issues that
are best when not talked about, and I think that masturbation is one of them.
I understand that every teenage boy masturbates, but it doesn't mean that they
are ignorant about the issue. Let him be, and I am sure that he will grow into
a fine young man who is in "touch" with his sexuality. As for the question
about ejaculation, I believe that msot boys start at 13-15. I remember my
first ejaculation (sorry for the details), I wasn't scared at all.
Ejaculations don't "just happen", it's a lengthy process that takes months to
develope. It's hard to explain without going into graphic details, and this
being a teenage/parents board, I will respect that and not go into it any
further. But don't worry, he will be fine. :) I would know, I was there a few
years ago.

No, size does not matter...it's the bed techniques that matter. Penis size means nothing when you are erected.

uncle twikkelingssteurnissen (unregistered), Sunday, 20 February 2011 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

Parents:

Why such scrutiny with the kids and the home PC? Kids need to learn trust, and
the only way you can teach them that is to show them that you do trust them.
If your child(ren) is/are not old enough to use the computer without being at
risk, then why give them the access to the computer in the first place? Many
parents are panicking over nothing. Yes, I do realize that sexual assults
happen as the result of the Internet, but you need to realize that a bad man
(pedophile) isn't going to be able to reach through the computer and grab your
kids. There has to be consent by both sides. I don't think it's a matter of
monitoring your kids, but more about teaching them responsible internet usage.

Actually Jeff, no. I learned from a man named Rudy that the size of your penis
doesn't matter, it's what you say to the ladies. If you use your tongue and
say "la la la la la" it'll help!

I think the issue w/ Marc Loi is he comes across as "HEY LOOK AT ME, I CARE ABOUT YOUR RIGHTS, LADIES", wears it too much as a badge of honor. I don't doubt his sincerity but dude could dial it back a bit. Sometimes he comes across as the male feminist version of the "only gay in the village" character on Little Britain.

http://meninmenstruation.wordpress.com/2011/06/26/always-maxi-leakguard-plus-with-odor-lock-regular-review/

I would definitely recommend this pad to others and has given me renewed confidence in Always. It’s nice to know that they’re trying to get ahead-of-the-game and also moving away from their so-called “like cotton” dry weave and moving to one which feels comfortable, regardless of the weather. After all, pads are terrible when it’s gross outside and you’re sweating, mixed with menstrual flow smell and if incontinent, even urine – so to have a pad that can stand up to that really is impressive. Although the price is steeper than the usual line of pads or other brands, for $3.88 everyday low price at Walmart, I can’t complain.

Why is he reviewing pads? wtf? This is like those vibrator reviews on Amazon where a man write how his WIFE really loved the vibrator and how happy his WIFE was with all her orgasms.

http://meninmenstruation.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/female-masturbation-education-girls-playing-with-themselves/

I remember a conversation I had with one of my god-sis and she kept on insisting about this really “hot boy” she wanted to have sex with. I asked her how much she knew about her body and she said “not a lot” and I had asked her if she ever has touched herself or looked at her body. She said the only time she does that is when she takes a shower or gets dressed and that the touching is “not sexual”. I questioned her further, asking her why she feels comfortable having sex with a guy, yet, is afraid to have even rubbed herself or felt shy about exploring her own body. She kind of blinked her eyes at me, not knowing how to answer because I posed a challenge which made her question WHY she could accept another person groping away at her body but have never done it herself. If in fact she saw masturbating or exploring herself as being disgusting or dirty, why is it any cleaner when done by someone else? In the end I’m not sure if she did end up having sex with the guy (knowing her, probably), but it was probably a question she still cannot answer!

when people say that they are afraid their thoughts are "objectifying" women, it sounds like they have a horrible, magical affliction wherein every woman they stare at for too long turns to stone.

the strange and important sound of the synthesizer (Treeship), Thursday, 30 May 2013 13:30 (twelve years ago)

i don't really understand this guy's issue though. if he is at a place where he doesn't see personhood, intelligence, etc. and sexiness as contradictory wrt women, why does it matter if he has passing sexual thoughts about the women that he sees? how is that objectifying them? this seems more puritanical than feminist. the real issue with staring at women in public is that it makes them feel uncomfortable, so he should try to not do that if he isn't already, but this constant vigilance over what thoughts go through his mind seems like it would produce a lot of frustration.

These white women want to be cool and they want to be silent. cause the notion here is that we have to talk about personal transformation if we're interested in social transformation, and that when it comes to quietly lusting over random strangers one can be playing a part in the upkeep of patriarchy if one's internal life is reinforcing all the usuals.

but like, work on developing female leadership in your organizations. don't write a slate essay.

Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)

xp why even praiseworthy though? i think the key thing is to get rid of the idea that mark loi put forth in his facebook comments in the OP that "wanting to see someone naked" and "respecting them as a person" are incompatible, or at the very least at odds in some way. that idea doesn't even make sense. it seems like sexists would think that way, not feminists.

it's not about self-policing thoughts altogether, or anything like fighting the biological imperative. it's just about understanding the power differential and being mindful of the ways we can reproduce it or instead work to subvert it in our lives, whether in real interactions with women or in the interactions with women we allow ourselves to imagine.

I've read arguments that Dworkin is not in fact pathologizing the experience of male heterosexuality but rather pathologizing male heterosexuality as it occurs within the patriarchy (and is constituted by male supremacist culture. I'm not sure I completely buy that explanation though. She clearly suggests that "male-dominant gender hierarchy" is "immune to reform," that within the context of that hierarchy intercourse is always a violation, and that if you believe that "intercourse itself determines women's lower status," the only way out is through the use of modern reproductive technologies that evade intercourse entirely. That "intercourse appears to be the expression of [male] contempt in pure form, in the form of a sex hierarchy; it requires no passion or heart because it is power without invention articulating the arrogance of those who do the fucking."

Sorry, a little off-topic. nb everything Dworkin writes should probably be read in fuller context than I've given here so you can make up your own mind.

slate follow-up:

Hinds' piece, written for Slate, takes it as a given that male lust is inherently disrespectful to women, apparently because Hinds himself cannot see women as anything but vaginas on legs. Actual feminist men see vaginas on legs and heads on shoulders.

Andy: It's okay to strip people naked in your imagination, as long as you respect their right to not know that's what you're doing. This is accomplished by not gawking, ogling, and drooling, but rather learning to be discreet. Nearly all women and a healthy percentage of men manage to do this every day.

this seems pretty otm to me

Mordy , Friday, 31 May 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

yeah as i said before confessing this seems compulsive to me--it's like it didn't occur to him that this is something you can keep to yourself (and deal with it as a problem or not as you see fit). to make it public like this seems oddly aggressive, like holding eye contact with a stranger.

this guy chris crass is one of my favorite writers on subjects like these, and one of the points he touches on is that *when among other men*, anti-sexist men should be working to lead their groups, organizations, and friends towards anti-sexist thinking and practices. what's worth considering in that process, though, is the "public face" of that kind of work--if you're not willing to be relatively openly vulnerable about your own struggles confronting sexism (or maybe even if you are), then the kind of leadership-of-males chris advocates can wind up looking an awful lot like marc loi.

that having been said, sometimes i'm not entirely sure exactly what about loi is being mocked itt. obviously in some of these posts he's practically lip-licking at women under a thin veneer of body positivity, and that's super creepy and crypto-misogynist, and in other posts he's just sort of odd. but like this post in particular doesn't seem all that outlandish to me. is there more context that would clear it up?

BIG HOOS aka the denigrated boogeyman (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Friday, 26 July 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)

this post is fine. i think his early posts seem shitty to me, how he is chastising women for not living up to a "feminist" ideal of sexual morality that he has invented himself, while simultaneously deflecting criticisms from others by saying, essentially, "my ideas aren't coming from a place of insecurity because i can get laid, and my sexual virility entitles me to speak about these issues" which is as misogynistic as it gets, basically.

fervently nice (Treeship), Friday, 26 July 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

badg, Friday, 26 July 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

i don't think he is a misogynist, but i think he's response to luke -- "i can get women off unlike you stfu" -- is pretty misogynistic, as is his expressed "disappointment" with women's behavior at a nightclub or whatever

fervently nice (Treeship), Friday, 26 July 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

it's the old schwyzer "women love me. i know it. they know it. and i know how to treat a woman right" that just seems paternalistic and more about one upping other guys than about helping women in any way.

I think we need good, brave, male voices who can take criticism and aren’t simply parroting the party line. I took Feminism 101. I know how to use all the big words. Look, intersectionality, I used it correctly in a sentence. I mean, fuck that. We need better than that.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 9 August 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

So the real story you all missed is that I talked my way into teaching women's studies on the basis of 2 undergrad courses only. The college knew that at the time, and since I had a history degree and wanted to teach it, they let me.
My expertise is British medieval church history. I had no business teaching feminism, however well I may have taught it. I then built a career as a well-known online male feminist on fraudulent pretenses. My mania let me talk a good game, but there was no there there.

So with the clarity that comes from a shitload of anti-psychotics, I'm sorry I've been such a breathtakingly cocky fraud.

I read one book of Kimmel's and made myself an expert on men and masculinity. I read a little bit about porn, and figured out how to make it a fun circus for all. I wanted my students to learn. I cared about them. I even loved them. I loved the attention more and I was fucking awesome at getting it.

Yes, no shit I'm having a manic break right now. I'll be fine, and I'll dump in some tranquilizers in a sec. But let the truth come out. The critics were right. I know I did a little bit of good. I know I helped a few people. But I did so much more harm by being fraudulent, by lying. My former friends and employers, I'm sorry. I meant well but I didn't have the credentials I pretended I did.

By the way do you know you only need a MA in history to teach any history course you like? That's the law. At least in my college.

So I got diagnosed bipolar with psychotic features but damn the Seroquel knocks me flat and I wanted to FEEL alive again So I will be okay. I'll go offline again. Just a manic episode that I'll regret. But I've been such a liar. A terrible liar. I hurt so many people with lies.

I was never qualified to teach any gender studies courses. I talked my way into all these gigs. I owe you the truth! Those of you tweeting at me to be quiet want me to cover it up. And yes, I networked like a motherfucker to get promoted. Which is how I got the gigs I got. I learned clickbait. Sometimes I fucked my way into a gig. I will come back when I am well and teach what I should be teaching. I will eventually be well. But I am deliberately letting this manic episode run so you can KNOW THE TRUTH.

My friends are calling but I'm not answering.

I made my writing all about me. I centered my pain and my cock. and I sold it to you. And WOC, yes you @amaditalks and @Blackamazon, you were right. I was awful to you because you were in the way. I am so so sorry that I let myself be like this. But I wanted atttention so f-ing bad. This was all about attention. I built a brand (remember "off-brand") on being something completely false to get approbation. I have to go away to learn how to hear other people. Through these voices in my head.

My friends who defended me I'm so sorry. You did all that work for nothing. The critics were right, they could see it. If you read @graceishuman or @redlightvoices you'll see they GOT ME EXACTLY right. I appropriated the language of redemption, I knew which buttons to push, I used sex and charm and whiteness and it usually worked.

So yes I'm bipolar as fuck that truth is out there. Yes I'm on a manic episode and feeling crazed. I should take the Seroquel that's right there but I'm tired of being medicated and numb. If youo think these tweets are off, you're so wrong. AT LAST the authentic Hugo. He's here! No mask. I'm set free by disease and disgrace. It feels so GOOD.

Why should I stop, friends? This is the truth coming out now! You can denounce me now. I'm out of feminism, not because I don't believe in it, but because I'm such a pisspoor example of it all.

I cheated on my wife and pretended to be reformed. I wrote an article in the Atlantic condemning age-disparate relationships the same ...that I was sleeping with a 23 year-old. And sexting a 27 year-old. Not my students at least. I'm a monstrous hypocrite. And I mocked the suffering of abuse survivors who were triggered by my work

This is real YOU WANT A PICTURE OF ME TO PROVE IT? No one has hacked me.

Look, I tried hard. I did love and do love many of you and believe in your work. When I promoted you, it was generally because you were doing good stuff. But I was just craving attention. I loved being the most notorious bad boy male feminist out there. I cultivated that shit so hard. I wrote that facials piece for Jez write after the first set of scandals about me broke. I did it because I wanted to send a message that the critics couldn't touch me. It was a metaphorical and literal "In your face!" to the haters.

My diagnosis, by the way? Bipolar disease with psychotic features plus BPD. I have all my meds lined up: lithium, seroquil, klonopin, wellbutrin, lexapro.

Oh, and the folks who are angry at me right now? Of course they know this is too little too late. I will get well but I left with my tail between my legs. With you all heaving sighs of gratitude. Now, now, now you get the truth.

Very medicated but breaking silence (deal) because I'm sick of the attacks on my editors and colleagues today. Why blame them for me?
It's ridonkulous that editors should have been able to guess at my nature and intent. I'm borderline sociopathic with talent for duplicity.
Good editors got played. That has nothing to do with whiteness.
The people who published me believed in my work. They weren't motivated by bigotry. They were simply doing good journalism.
You have a block button fuckin' use it. I'm just sick of how this has turned into a bizarre teachable moment on race.
I'm sure I'll regret this in the morning. The drugs haven't hit yet. I pumped in an extra 10 mg of Klonopin so I should be done soon.
Stop punishing websites for trusting manipulative jerks.
Sarah honey you have to change the email account too otherwise I can reset the password.
This whole #solidarityisforwhitewomen thing is an abusive cudgel to be used against a lot of people who are really working at inclusivity.
I'm not at home in Carmel or LA and I'm not suicidal so chillax and don't bother the police again.
I know many of my former friends feel deeply betrayed. I am sorry. The dishonesty/manipulativeness is in my nature, embedded.
Another 300 mg Seroquel and I'll be safely asleep soon, promise. But I need to make my point first.
The point is that I'm sui generis. I'm not symptomatic of a problem in feminism, I'm a reminder of what manipulative mentally ill can do.
If you don't think a black man can also get away with amazeball shite, google Jsyson Blair.
Fuck I mean Jayson Blair.

The best example of this was the reactionary #notallmen, a reaction to the globally trended #yesallwomen. The hashtag defended the last shreds of male honor, rather than forcing men to hold themselves accountable for the ways they reinforce a flawed system.

Wasn't #notallmen pretty much the exact opposite of that?

I'm not super au fait with the world of sappy acoustic youtube dudes (as referenced in that piece) but it seems like a largely distinct category from 'male feminism' per se?

Sure I will catch shit for this. I am all for calling men out on their patriarchy, oppressive behavior, discounting, ignorance, misogyny, and sexism. However, the term mansplaining is degrading, dehumanizing, and discounts the voice of another based on gender.

i found marc loi's linkedin (i will not link in), possibly, though it has different years for his college times. I am currently a speechwriter for a 3-star U.S. Navy Command in Washington, D.C. he's all grown up now.

was reminded of this dude last week when I was looking at questions I'd answered on a dating site some years ago
"are you a feminist?"
(yes is checked)

I'd made a note about not going around mentioning it all the time because of how insufferable guys who do are

must have encountered some loi content around the time I wrote it

sigh

yeah i never really felt comfortable outright calling myself a feminist on a dating profile. but given how important it seems to be for women to mention it in their profiles, maybe they do want to see it? i have no idea. i settled on just putting "ally" in a list of other "things i am"

i had a good laff one with a woman i met on a site who showed me an unsolicited dick pic from a d00d who mentioned bell hooks no less than 3 times on his profile
