Lots of Sundays, today -- mostly RW&A. Am expecting two Revelers albums but couldn't find the one I wanted, which was "Better Get Hit in Your Soul". So I hope I like the other two.

I didn't like Newsome at McCarren Pool; it was okay as background music but not for standing around at a show and being quiet for. But the same is true of lots of other music I like, so I'm probably just being contrary.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

EXCEPTER TRIBUTE BAND

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

im really likeing the new stuff. i can see laurel's point and expect a lot of people won't wanna hear her sing 16 minute epics, but i think i'd find a collection of little pop numbers precious and unbearable. her voice is much more focused and strong, shed of some of the excessive idiosyncracies of her earlier stuff and the arrangements are pretty batty from what i can follow. much more cellular and circular construction of how melodic lines come in and out, etc...less cleverness and cutesyness (though its still a bit cute and twee at times)and more into a fucked take on old shirley/dorothy collins epic ballads and the like. jim orourke's done a nice job to add very subtle bits of strings and noise to make things a bit more lush and etherial (rather than drawing room/chambery).

ill work up a full review this week, but it wont be published for ages. a friend commented it was "this is slightly insane. two parts bambi, one part willow, four parts dark crystal?" theres also some very melanie-ish moments (which i noticed at the pool show).

Grizzly Man OST

The Richard Thompson stuff is incredible. The group improv stuff with Jim O'Rourke and Henry Kaiser is passable, I haven't really warmed up to it yet. The Don Edwards song is a grower, I hated it and now it's okay.

I have never heard Joanna Nesom but I've seen her 2x (the last time was a longgggg time ago, I think hstencil was road-managing smog!). I can't really recall any thing memorable about it.

jesus...ive moved on to mbv: you made me realize and something called morris on, which is very silly english nonsense evidently...what do i download sometimes...i dont think i can deal with this...

and joanna newsom is just one of those love hate things...unbearable to some, delightful to others...

i listened to the new dylan while visiting a freind at work last fri evening...it makes sense in a dive-ish bar...its an old man record.

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

"delightful"???

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

yes ian, for the effect she manages on those that enjoy her, i think "delightful" is fitting word choice...

remember, pally, i love goddamned melanie of all things...

(multi-XXXpost)
Lefty Frizell had the right attitude about being an old man

Said an old man to a good-lookin' girl
Well, I've been around this big, wide world
That home on the hill, well, honey that's mine
I've got the money if you've got the time

Well, I'm not too old to cut the mustard anymore
I can stlll get around like I did before
So come along with me my sweet, sweet hon
I'm an old, man lookin' for fun.

What I can do now, most young men can't
There's not a town this old boy can't paint
I can make all the night clubs any old time
I may be a little old but I'm doin' all right.

Well, I'm not too old to cut the mustard anymore
I can stlll get around like I did before
So come along with me, my sweet, sweet hon
I'm an old, old man lookin' for fun.

Don't take me wrong I just want have fun
Have someone along to help me spend my mon
'Cause you don't live but once, so please understand
That I'm an old, old man tryin' to live while I can.

word. I'll listen to the Dylan again, tho.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

modern times has a similar feel to the radioshows to my ears ... and both remind me of sitting in odd bars talking to old men, which i do enjoy.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

I only ever had The Winter Is Coming before, which I always thought was pretty good. That guy's definitely a decent songwriter.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

winter is coming was probably my fave too, i haven't listened to those records in forever though, the last two times i saw them it was so far from being as fun as back in 98 or whatever. an ilxor appears on an elf power album! not me or trife though.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought "The Skeleton" on that record (if it had different words, I guess) could've been a killer Elastica song. And now I'm listening to "The Secret Ocean" on this one and again thinking, "Wow, done by some Britpop band in a studio that could've been like the best Britpop song ever." (Maybe! I don't know - never followed Britpop much, but...)

Pom, how much is that Messiaen box? I kinda want it.

I sometimes turn into a huge sentimental pussy in the fall. So it's been: Jana Hunter, Hall & Oates, Animal Collective live sets, and Double Leopards. But it's also been Lindstrom, Luomo's new single, Villalobos live sets, and Alex Under's newish album.

leo kottke - circle 'round the sun (the one he put out himself on symposium in 1970. i'm siked to find a copy. my brother in law played it for me years ago and i never thought i'd see a copy)

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 14 September 2006 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Per Bobby Whitlock: There's a really cool clip of Derek and the Dominoes on the Johnny Cash show on YouTube. They do "It's Too Late," then rock with Cash and Carl Perkins on "Matchbox."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 14 September 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 14 September 2006 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that D&D clip of "It's Too Late" is freakin amazing..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 14 September 2006 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

the barnaby bye album is...okayish. i need to listen again. i can't remember if i played the second side. i think their were one or two good tracks on side one. the bobby whitlock album is sort of a dud. way listless. i dunno. it wasn't rocking me. i had high hopes for it.

of the ones i listed up there, there are some definite keepers.

the sweet pain album on UA is pretty cool extended jam hard rock and blues rock.

i had never heard that cold blood album. very cool. donny hathaway produced it(!!) plus, it's loaded with coke & pete escovedo action. did he produce their other stuff? i only ever had the first album.

the bell+arc album is pretty nice blooze rock stuff. graham bell on vocals.

the circus album is way cool! local-press ohio hard rock and pop from 1973. they were from garfield hts, ohio. very powerpop + modrock.

the seven deadly sins album by two freaky looking dudes is all cosmic synthdiscoprog and every song title is one of the 7 sins. the cover will seriously creep you out.

the cottonwood album on ABC is straightup hippie jam. but good! nice guitars.

and the cambridge album is a real treat. private-press 70's southern/country rock with serious picking and playing and also some incongruous 60's harmonypop/beatlesrock songs that are great. i haven't googled it. i've never seen it. never heard of it. some serious looking southern hippies on the cover in their civil war finest.

and rick nelson's garden party album? all i can say is: i can't fuckin' believe i had never heard rick nelson's garden party album. wow. so great.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 14 September 2006 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Jessie Girl". that's a good Barnaby Bye song. they do a cover of she's leaving home. haven't heard that yet. i don't expect much.

oh, and meanwhile, JAXON alert! that *Severin Browne* album from 1973 on Motown is right up his alley. super smooth funky white boy hippie action. go motown! he musta sank like a stone. the music is great! good voice too.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 14 September 2006 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ick. SLH is least fave Beatles tune ever. Thanks, Scott -- I always love reading about what you're listening to. Makes me wanna hit up more dollar bins.

Speaking of Southern/country rock, Toy Caldwell's solo album from the early '90s is very nice. I interviewed him via phone! Sweet guy. RIP.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Friday, 15 September 2006 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

meanwhile, guitar chimes ain't on this set. but there is loads to get lost in. rope stretching blues. black biting bee blues. it also has tracks with him backing up various blooze women. leola wilson. bertha henderson. irene scruggs. that stuff is great too!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 September 2006 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

this allan jaffe album i picked up is tops too! never heard of the dude. wiggy avant scronkage. i dig it. i'll pick up any album with a songtitle like "Hyperspace:Warp Drive" on it, but you never know how good it's gonna be. the only dude i've heard of on it is the flute player, james newton. wait, check that, i've heard anthony davis the piano player too.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 September 2006 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

"wow, cool! i don't know why i thought it was on takoma. did he tape other stuff that came thru the club???(!!!)"

I started to get into this on another thread...he taped EVERYTHING, always with permission, so we've got 600+ rolls of reel-to-reel to go through (which is going to take a while). So far, we've got shit-tons of K0ttke, Koerner Ray and Glover, John Fahey, Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Howling Wolf, Bonnie Raitt, David Solberg (That would be STARSKY of S+Hutch fame), Big Mama Thornton, Mance Lipscomb, Harmonica George Smith, Larry Coryell, etc etc etc.

It's fucking sick.

OK, enough about my funtime party wheelah listening party...

ya figure some of the dead folks have estates you would have to go through. they would probably want a cut. it would take lots of work, but you could put stuff out legit. or do it with another label that has the money to figure that stuff out. hell, what do i know, it would probably be a nightmare. maybe.

i bought CDs at a yard sale today (12 for ten bucks!), so i'm listening to those:

3rd bass - cactus

pe - nation of millions

metallica - garage inc.

alice in chains - unplugged

fun lovin' criminals - come find yourself

3rd bass - derelicts of dialect

house of pain - fine malt lyrics

naughty by nature - s/t

throwing muses - university

the later stuff on that josef k comp from after when they just kind of sounded like joy division is pretty cool - very relentless and raw; guitar sounds like martin bramah. i guess this was their another-historically-significant-moment-in-british-postpunk-iconoclasm-as-we-"commit-commercial-suicide"-moment.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 16 September 2006 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

pete nice wiki! - After his musical endeavors, he became a noted baseball historian. His first work, Baseball Legends of Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, claims that America's favorite pastime was pioneered by men now interred in Brooklyn's "Green-Wood Cemetery".

Domino USA. Who is LTM? I thought the story was that Josef K had never had anything released in the U.S., and that was the point of the comp.

milton have you heard the joanna newsom album?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Josef K have never had anything in print in the US but everything and then some has been in print for years in the UK, which you can get here for a few bucks more I guess. Fact is, the Marina release of the Endless Soul comp is partially what inspired me to start Acute Records, it was an exciting enough release here, even as an import, that I figured there was a market for reissues of that type.

I don't see any info on the Domino site about Josef K though.

LTM is a label based in Belgium run by someone who'd once been involved with Les Disques du Crepuscule. As a reissue label, he started by mining everything that had been released on Factory and Crepuscule but remained out of print, and has moved onto some other favorites, everything from the Severed Heads to Gina X.

OK, I see LTM's essential issue of Josef K's The Only Fun in Town/Sorry for Laughing has been deleted. Perhaps the rights have gone to Domino?

Reading about the Domino comp now, why only the Peel of the Missionary? That's a bit weird.

But if you like Josef K, you want to get LTM's cd by Marine. Not as long or consistent sound or career, but a couple of key songs that may have helped inspire some of Josef K's funkier stuff.

yeah, milton..im hooked on that record...listened to it twice yesterday waiting for the giants game to start...threw it in the mix today...but have now deleted (from the work computer)...there has been talk of re-issuing more, hasnt there? i hope so...interesting dude.

and tim, y's is still growing on me...i really thought i'd be rather cool on it, esp with fall coming, but it keeps being the right record to put on (at times). then again, im on a shirley/dorothy collins kick too. but i find this new epic direction shes taking on quite engaging. i still think most people will pass it up as too short/long and too meandering/"ambitious", but her voice is much improved, her lyrics less cute, and her arrangements are pretty interesting. van dyke parks and jim o'rourke are definately a plus to her total presentation.

after watching mccabe and mrs. miller last night im on a leonard cohen jag. 3 albums today. i've come to understand i really dont know too much about cohen. just the basics...i had a copy of the most dangerous game, or whatever the autobio-novel is called, but grew tired of it (and its short), but im back to finding almost everything up to im yr man, really fascinating stuff. the early and more calssically folk records are very weird records after all. its something i was less conscious of when i was into him when i was younger. hes sound is very not quite of time or place and his arrangements are damned odd. more on this once i get my head more around what im driving at...

Matt, I noticed tonight at dinner that Barry Adamson talks up "School's Out" in the October Mojo's "Last Night a Record Changed My Life" column.

it's an unreal record. a friend had turned me onto the coop recently, he played me killers while we were drinking.

i'd only ever heard the greatest hits record, but the albums are sort of bizarre broadway art rock, although with detroit scum rock flavor instead of prog pomp. really nothing like it...one big setpiece song quotes big musical sections of west side story!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 21 September 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

if you're talking about this, loan it to me. I've got the 2001 samla + ruins live record, which is good but lo-fi

the first two hollmer albums are way better than 'siberian circus', which is a good but incoherent comp, these albums flow like frith's 'gravity'. I listened to this disc four times in a row last night.

i love this. i got the uglier grey US album cover version on ebay.. for $3 american!
Actually slightly different records. One is called First Years Plan and came out on EMI I think in the UK and just had the earliest Fast singles. Mutant Pop was an american comp that dropped some of the Mekons tracks and added a Flowers song from the first Earcom comp and a song from the first single, which was actually on Bob Last's next label, Pop Aural. The grey one is cheap because it was an american release and is relatively common.

http://discog.lesdisquesducertain.com/fastpop/

All of that, minus the flowers, but plus some Fire Engines tracks, came out as a UK EMI CD in the mid 90s called Rigour, Discipline and Disgust.

The original selections may see CD release again with some bonus visual material.

you know, i like that peter walker tribute thing okay - it's pretty and sounds nice - until it gets to thurston moore's track and all of a sudden it sounds like i'm playing guitar. and i'm drunk. and i'm taping myself playing guitar drunk in 1989 on a walkman. but other than that, it's fine.

1974 found Nilsson back in California, and when John Lennon moved there during his separation from Yoko Ono, the two musicians rekindled their earlier friendship. Lennon was intent upon producing Nilsson's next album, much to Nilsson's delight. However, their time together in California became known much more for heavy drinking and drug use than it did for musical collaboration. In a widely publicized incident, they were ejected from the Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood for drunken heckling of the Smothers Brothers. Both also caused property damage during binges, with Lennon trashing a bedroom in Lou Adler's house, and Nilsson throwing a bottle through a thirty-foot hotel window.

To make matters worse, Nilsson ruptured a vocal cord during the sessions for this album, but he hid the injury due to fear that Lennon would call a halt to the production. The resulting album, Pussy Cats, which may charitably be described as "uneven", was a shock for listeners who knew Nilsson as one of the best singers of his generation.

Rickey -- been listenin mainly to the complete 1959 CBS recordings for the last week or so - Mingus Ah UM and Mingus Dynasty - but also broke out Let My Children Hear Music and East Coastin'. so good. I just love the way the band turns "Mood Indigo" into a rave-up on Dynasty.

thinking about starting a project of listening to his complete everything in chronological order (only really missing the Debut stuff at this point), but everytime I embark on one of those I never finish. like the time I had grand intentions to listen to everything Miles ever recorded and never made it past the Parker sessions....

If you're anything like me, you'll get around to playing all the Mingus you own sooner rather than later. I was listening to "Town Hall Concert" this afternoon.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 29 September 2006 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, did that Mingus comment sound like an order? Anyway, I just meant that I seem to cycle through the 25 or so albums I own by him once a year or so. There are eight or 10 -- Mingusx5, "Mingus Ah Um," "Mingus Presents Mingus," "Cumbia and Jazz Fusion" -- that I give relatively continuous play around here, but it really is all good.

P.S. I'm so excited! Andrew Hill is playing Seattle at the end of October.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 30 September 2006 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

Edgar Broughton Band "Sing Brother Sing", CD reissue of early seventies brit u/g rock. I used to own it & dig it years ago. It's not very good. Kind of lame sub-beefheart w/self-righteous preachy lyrics mixed w/early '70's freak/hippie scene chauvanist piggery. I shhould have bought a Patto album or another Groundhogs album, aor maybe some Budgie instead.
