played last night on bar jukebox:

x "los angeles"
wall of voodoo "ring of fire"
romeo void "never say never"
steely dan "babylon sisters"
creedence "run through the jungle"
abc "poison arrow"

and something else i don't remember

cuervo jones (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 1 October 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah! also fleetwood mac "tusk"

cuervo jones (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 1 October 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

this is where i confess to seeing rinse dream's "classic" and "arty" pron flick night dreams and that it did indeed feature wall of voodoo's version of "ring of fire" rather memorably. but he should have gone with romeo void instead.

I've had a copy of that IMPlog 12" for about a decade thanks to my good buddy Dave who used to come inta Baked Bean Teeth's record store and give me random tapes of awesomeness ... what a bro

Barbecue Bob - Complete Recordings Vol 1
multiple listens of Byrds - Ballad of Easy Rider
Homesick James - Goin' Back Home
Keith Richards - Talk is Cheap
Hamilton Streetcar - Flash / Invisible People 45

and oh man, last night on 'Blues Before Sunrise' Steve Cushing played the entirety of the Bo Diddley "Bo Diddley's Beach Party" lp. I was a little out of it .. had a few beers, but that was some of he craziest, most unhinged guitar sludge I've ever heard. oh man. gotta talk to my man the Rev. Hoodoo about this one, I'm sure he has a copy.... fuckin incredible shit...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 2 October 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Herbie Hancock, Maiden Voyage

Sonics' "Keep A Knockin'" is one of the finest Little Richard covers, and LR is my patron saint (tho he's not dead yet -- long live!) *and* KAK is my fave song by him. So Sonics' version is OK by me.

Sadly, overloading on old blues/folk for label selection review.

Mississippi Fred w/Big Mama Thornton live and Kottke Scholar audition tape still TOTALLY KICKING MY ASS though.

Sifting through the tapes for live Fahey 1969 for bros enjoyment.

Still, any recommendations for new, loud, brainclearing stuff much appreciated. Please.

how are the friedbergers

posted earlier on blueberry boat thread:

i played the holy ghost/winter women one-two punch last night for the first time in about a month and it sounds better than ever. i don't really "get" why people hate it or think it's so wanky -- to me it's the most successful FF-related album(s) on the terms that it's experimental without going for cheap out-ness or unbridled showiness, and parts of it are very very pretty. it feels a lot more decentralized (not a lot of anchors to hold onto psychologically) and introverted than their pop-song stuff. people who say it's not listenable might be "listening" too hard -- it's really something that works best when you absorb it semi-passively and let random parts leap out at you. i like how both albums balance each other out, but the contrast between the two isn't too jarring -- one's slightly girlier and hookier, one's slightly more canterbury-psych/contemporary-classical, but they're a good match when you put 'em together.

i'm actually listening to a bizarro italo-pop album from the 70's that morricone arranged/conducted four songs on. the first song is a hoot. all dub-piano-wordless-female-backing-vocals-trippiness with the dude speak/singing and then massive drums erupt and the guy starts screaming scary sweet nothings at the top of his lungs. wild, man.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

i'm guessing the dude was a hit in italy and this was his stab at an american audience. oh man, same trippy backing vocals on the second song too. and the phattest fucking drums. (kinda makes you wish you could hear the instrumental version)

ooh .. is that THE FIX a.k.a the best midwestern hardcore band not named Negative Approach or Necros?? wow, a quick google search reveals that it is! had no idea Touch & Go was putting that out. nice! Between the Blight CD and this, they are really doing some ace archeological work. looks like this will render my old Lost & Found comp lp obsolete.

one of my pandora stations is playing Christmas (70's version) and i am in love! never heard them. wow. they were dudes from reign ghost. i'm pretty sure i've heard reign ghost, but i don't own their album. and meanwhile:

"None of the efforts helped the group gain stardom and in 1975, the team called it quits. Most members went on to other bands, like Benzene, Age of Mirrors, Buzzsaw, the Forgotten Rebels, and Threshold."

wtf, i want some buzzsaw and benzine! i ain't heard none of that shit.

yeah, Christmas were pretty good! 3 albums (the last one under the name "Spirit of Christmas" when they sort of morphed into a prog band). I have them all but actually I've never heard the Reign Ghost thing, been dying to hear that.

i used to have that on tape! "Everything you know is wrong!" or something like that. it's been a while. they were a little annoying, but i did used to listen to it. them and the lucy show. i had my lapses in judgement back then. i bought a scruffy the cat album once. oops! and a thelonious monster album (nicka to thread, he probably has a thelonious monster tattoo).

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

my band when i was like eighteen opened for thelonious monster once.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

i don't even remember that much about the album i had. i just remember that i only played it once or maybe twice. i would totally buy the first lucy show album if i saw it for a dollar somewhere.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

i was always so afraid of buying bad albums, cuz i never had that much money to spend on rekkerds before i was 16 and could get a 16 year old's job. i still resent scruffy the cat for wasting my money.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

did you buy fetchin' bones?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

yep, stormy. bout time tng got around reissuing the good stuff instead putting out more crappy calexico albums

Peter The Pill (Grodd), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

of course i bought fetchin bones. three albums worth! plus, the superfreak 12 inch! and i think i even had a post-FB cd by whatsherface. i still love, um, "stray" and some of the other songs on that album. "penny whistle"? the earlier stuff is pretty dire though. don dixon blows. wait, he recorded their stuff, right? i still own three lets active albums.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

i think i even still have the bad fetchin' bones albums. i only played those once or twice. but i played galaxie 500 a bunch. i had a gut bank album too, just so you know.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Laser's Edge (New Jersey prog label) was the label that did the CDs of the 2nd and 3rd Christmas albums (they also did the original CD reissue of the Plastic Cloud album -- must have got their paws on Allied's catalog or something)(yet they didn't do Innersystems so who knows.)

good news about the HC, Ian! although I'm not really sure what's left to do at this point -- Angry Red Planet? Larissa's L-Seven?

I'm gonna go play "No Idols" really loud.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

i can't remember who put out the plastic cloud vinyl i have. it might have been them. i bought it years ago. that recent reissue on vinyl was too expensive for me to think about upgrading. plus, i had no idea whether it sounded a ton better or anything. my copy sounds good to me. someone should buy me an original copy so that i can compare.

Doubly bummed about not winning the BILLY SHEERS LP after re-reading the Homework Vol. 3 liner notes:

Billy Sheers - yes, that's his real name - did this one thoroughly DIY LP in '82. The playing's mostly quite competent, and he's obviously at least as bright as he is disturbed, but, in flashes, Mr. Sheers is a veritable one-man Wiggins sisters. Sample lyric: "There he is; that's him. I know him. He's been here before; now, he's back for more. Let him in. There he is. That's him..." etc.

http://mendedrecords.blogspot.com/2006/09/faust-v.html#links

a link to the 'faust v' cassette released by virgin records to the press in 1975? I never even knew this existed

it's mostly 'munic and elsewhere' and the bonus tracks that came out on 'bbc sessions +' but it's also got some things that are not on any official release

Otto Midnight was right about the new Radio Birdman. Another reunion bites the dust. I was hoping for Burma-like persistence, but no go.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 20 October 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

i'm trying to think of a recent reunion that excited me at all. there aren't many. i went and saw the pretty things when i lived in philly. that was lovely. and the chameleons! they were great. i think that's it. come to think of it, mission of burma were really good when i saw them here on the island, and i'm not a big mission of burma fan. but with the prettys and the chameleons it was all about seeing them live. i can't think of one reunion album that i loved. oh wait, celtic frost. but stooges and new york dolls? no thanks.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 October 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

the dino jr reunion melted my face.
effegies didn't make me feel ripped off.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 20 October 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

reunions must be fun for the musicians, but less so for the fans. hard not to compare with yr memories, the classic shows & LPs etc.

yeah I was never ga-ga over MofB either but their comeback album sounded decent. don't get me started on The Pixies...and the Dolls thing was pure Atlantic City, appropriately enough. I've heard good things about the 21st century Stooges live -- haven't seen em -- but the chances of Iggy writing non-bad songs at this point are nil.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 20 October 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

Van der Graaf Generator reunion gigs were fucking incredible! Reunion album is OK too, not as good as "godbluff" or "still life", but better than "the quiet zone..." They seem to be keeping going, though they've managed to lose the saxophone player, who was awesome.

sproton layer was great -- love all of the Miller Brothers in their teen geek glory. Too bad they were more of a force in the later icky and terrible Niagra/Asheton controlled Destroy All Monsters that wrested control from Cary Loren. Niagra is one of the worst humanoids to walk the earth.

seems like really pretty good live reunions are a dime-a-dozen. in the last year or so I've seen reunions of Slint, Rocket From the Tombs, Os Mutantes, The Meters, Motley Crue, Mission of Burma, Blue Cheer .. they were all pretty sweet. I saw that Pretty Things show too. We talked to Dick Taylor and Phil May after the show .. it was awesome. The Zombies were really great too (well, they weren't calling themselves the Zombies ... it was "Argent & Blunstone", but whatever).

but yeah, the albums ... eh, I couldn't really care less.

so, i bought maria that arthur russell thing with the dfa mix. she hasn't listened yet though. and i got her that other arthur russell thing that came out this year. and an optimo mix! thanks to this thread. and a cd by some woman she likes. cluck? diane cluck?

and i had them hold some vinyl for me till i either have more CDs to trade in or i break down and just buy them. they got in sweet copies of eno/cluster and eno/roedelius/moebius on vinyl, oh, and the 2nd volume of that In-Kraut series on Marina. I loved that first one. double vinyl. and other stuff that i can't remember and probably don't need.

i got a cool album by the hippiehardrock band *Fat* today at the thrift store. but it's too beat for my high standards. maybe if i had a pro record cleaner it would sound okay. it's not even really scratched up, it just looks like someone sanded it with dirt. same with the sweetwater record i got today too. just too crackly for my virgin ears. i DID get a decent grass roots album today though in nice shape. i don't think i've EVER heard a grass roots album! i only ever had 45s. i dig it. the one with live for today on it. tip of my tongue is an awesome song. also got a pretty cool album on columbia called *...and then came bubba*. bubba is cool. countrish/folk/dylan/rock dude. nice guitar solos. and i got the clean living album on vanguard, but they are only just okay country/folk rock. also got *good news* on columbia. hippie/xian/folk. not great though. tho i haven't played the second side yet. also got a promo album made by a memphis jingle company in the 70's. tons of local yokel southern radio jingles on it. if you are into mid-70's alabama anti-litter campaign jingles. even the jingle company has a jingle on it! today taught me that i need to find really REALLY nice copies of grass roots albums. but this one will do for now.

i was never a fan of Numbers, but i was hanging out at a friend's house and his roommate, erik landmark (unbeknownst to me) was a member of the group. he does really great old timey early 20s/30s country & blues numbers with amazing male female harmonies

seems like erik was in about half a dozen bands at one point. or maybe that was my impression.

i liked the numbers stuff up to a point, but then we diverged.

i've been cycling through old stuff i haven't listened to in a good long while.

how is that? i saw that on this site but wasn't sure if it was gonna be like that Archie Shepp "Live at the Pan-African Festival" or Ornette Colman with the Master Musicians of Jajouka from "Dancing in Your Head", neither of which i thought were that great.

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 30 October 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

x-post: i think thats where i pulled it from too...ummm..yeah, as im at work im not sure i really got the whole open take at it, but as for now i dont think ill bother burning and bringing home...theres a certain level of useless distance in it. as though sanders is working to hard and not digging it enough...maybe just a lack of decent communication or...empathy? you know how sometimes good ideas just get cheesed up because the players are a little more excited than they are truely feeling it...thats my take so far. but to be fair, everything ive listened to today has been super low in the speakers

that other thing on there...the tapes from marraketch is pretty good, though...i think that was there.

SCOTT SEWARD! Is that the now-defunct super-kewl Microwaves from PA that are now in some other band and have some sort of post-post-punk cold brutal A-Frames thing going on? Is this an old album, or a new one? Does this post make any sense? What are you wearing?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard a couple of older microwaves things (think one from '02, and maybe one from '99?), and I also think pretty cool -- actually reminded me of a cross of This Heat and 80s King Crimson.
