srsly i had a really bad pumpkin pie experience once and it turned me off forever. also, when i carve pumpkins my eyes swell up and water and get itchy and shit. i think it's the pesticides, though, not the pumpkin that i'm allergic to.

sometimes my entire life be like DAMNNN! (tehresa), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

apparently pumpkins have a huge amount of pesticides in them even compared to other vegetables b/c of the way they absorb things in the soil or something (i heard) - this is why if you eat pumpkin seeds you should only eat organic ones.

doesn't "pumpkin flavoured" really just mean cinnamon and nutmeg and clove flavoured?

Excellent! I've seen a bit of stilt work lately cos some people I know do it, but the two stiltwalkers in that parade were way better. They were on quite tall stilts, maybe 6'? and seemed totally comfortable, twirling around and dancing with people on the ground, walking right over top of people in parade formations.

Alana Post: what obsure music are you listening to these days? (129 views)
Alana Post: alana post posted this on October 10th, 2006 @ 5:20:37 am
i think everyone here agrees with me when i say that the only original music left is the jazz of the balkans

alana post posted this on October 10th, 2006 @ 5:26:02 am
i've got one of 7 albums produced off a reel an itinerant catfish farmer carved using catfish spines and his own toe whiskers. he then spent years alone humming through them into a tinfoil phonograph and muttering randomly about ozark pine demons. 10 out of 10 stars for this obscure masterpiece that will doubtless change the face of alternative roots freak-folk.

omg guys!!! OMG i just came across an ultra-rare holy grail of psychadelia, this totally weird, damaged, krautrocky cosmic psych with electronic drones, haunting classical piano, and fucked up rhythms recorded at a secret studio in jodphur india in 1974. it was considered a myth for 30 years until discovered by a japanese kozumitsuku enthusiast. it has been living with yellow magic orchestra's cats this entire time, getting crazier! rumor is that it's been buried all this time because it's cover is a nude drawing of the wife of a prominent freemason. some lyrics: "Licking BLOOD Drinking TEARS Sacrificing LOVE on the Altar of Tomorrow Eating FRUITS of Stolen Vineyards With Withered Young Mouthes That Sing The OLD SONGS WHICH WERE FORBID". A MUST-HAVE

These pillows have additional zip-on covers with a high thread count to keep bits of down INSIDE. I comparison shopped for ages. Think I'm returning the sheets, though -- they're not soft enough and the color is too pastel-bright (it's called "gold" but is actually lemon sherbet yellow).

When OnNYTurf's server blew up a couple of weeks back, we were worried that our favorite subway maps mashup was lost forever. Luckily, they were able to recover everything-- and what's more, they've added a cool new feature to the map: station outlines! To find them, zoom in to the closest magnification, and you'll be able to see the entire outline of the station, complete with red bars noting the entrances and exits. This way, when you're going to a new stop, you'll know where to stand on the platform.

To complete this update, the guys at OnNYTurf had to photograph and vectorize the maps hanging in every station, and then cut the photographs into more than 50,000 tiles. That's a lot of work, but it seems to have paid off. Good work!

BACKCOUNTRY SHREDDING

omg gbx you have enough snow there?!?!!! i asked my sister about jackson this week and she didn't think there would be enough to go out until mid-november.

p.s. are you ski, snowboard or tele?

bell labs (bell_labs), Friday, 20 October 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

up high there's enough, yeah. my buddy's coming up from jackson; he was going to ski the middle teton glacier, but the slog in is 7 miles vs. the 2-3 mile walk-ups here.

ps - all three, sort of, but mostly just alpine

gbx (skowly), Saturday, 21 October 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

i'm mostly alpine too.

my sister is a rad tele skier and makes it look sooo great, i wish i could be better at it!

PPS JEALOUS!!!

bell labs (bell_labs), Saturday, 21 October 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

tele is hard work...not bad, technically, but omg it's like doing a thousand lunges, for five hours straight.

304. Could have gotten kicked out of school over HUEG mistake that flushed away more money than my academic career is probably worth, but instead my adviser didn't even seem angry or disappointed when I told him.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 10 November 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit, you DID synthesize the wrong DNA!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 November 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

more ann coulter babies?

manute lol (sanskrit), Friday, 10 November 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, wrong DNA after all. Serotonin intron 2 VNTR when I should have done the 5-HTT in/del. My adviser was the only person whose reaction I cared about, but I still have to announce my incompetence to the rest of the people this may concern on Monday.
I guess having a psych student learn genetics on the fly wasn't such a good idea after all.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:22 (nineteen years ago)

dude, the entire PhD industry is 99% of people flushing away more money than their academic career is worth.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:25 (nineteen years ago)

they could've given your money to a german phd to write a book on heidegger. that doesn't cure AIDS either.

most PhDs are flushing away their school's money, not their own.

diane airbus (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

oh did you flush away your own money, dan? in that case, that sucks. sorry. =(

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

they could've given your money to a german phd to write a book on heidegger. that doesn't cure AIDS either.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

er i don't know what just happened

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

i just mean to say, i hear a lot of grad student friends worry a lot about misusing their school's money. in the case of my girlfriend, when she frets about which books she should buy with her book honorarium, i want to ask, do you really expect that yr grad school expects to make any return on the $200k they pony up for you to write a dissertation on 19th century realism? that's not how the economics of the thing works, you know?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

i guess it's the time/sweat commitment you're losing which sucks, but i imagine your advisor's attitude wrt your time + sweat is "more where that came from!"

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

are you really paying your own money to get a psych PhD? shouldn't NSF or NIH or somebody be footing the bill??

355. Best use of google maps EVER:

www.onnyturf.com/subway/

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 20 November 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

i find it weird that google maps doesn't have the subway stations on there by default, don't you? for somewhere like manhattan it's just as important for figuring out how to get somewhere, if not more.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 20 November 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

I find it infuriating that the MTA subway maps don't have more streets on there. The station version has avenues and major streets, but the official online map has no surface details at all: http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 20 November 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel, that googlemaps map has been around for like a year!

Also, the MTA has a pdf map there that is the same as the system wide map that is way better than the gif version on the webpage

in JAPAN, clever marketers have firmly convinced the country's population that all Americans eat KFC on Xmas, and thus, you (Japanese) should do so too. this humors me to no end. caveat: KFC in Japan is actually edible.
