otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

Hey otto no I wasn't but I did get to see them many many times. I didn't want to deal with a HUGE crowd. Was it lots of fun/worth it? Would have loved to hear the organ stuff live.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 2 November 2006 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

worth it for me, i live around the corner from the bar. no sense being that close and not going. huge crowd was a problem, it was unbelievably sweaty in there. i was about 3 people deep from the stage between eric and mr. q (i was close enough to get hypnotized by the leslie he was using. the gin helped though.) then had to move because i literally could not breath. they played the first half of the set with him, played the entire 9 songs album plus a few more (like the monkey, obviously). then they played for another 90 minutes with just the 3 of them. i think the set clocked in at an hour and 47 minutes. defintiely worth my $12.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 2 November 2006 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah those mp3's from the who sound so so good, I guess you have them? I hope they put it out. I think they will. Everything sounds crystal clear and they played like they were on fire. I would have gone if I'd lived that close too, but I live a plane ride away from Chicago.

i never understand when people say something like the fmu fair is "hit or miss". if there are 10 zillion records in a room and you can't find anything than you aren't really trying very hard.

hit is that there's so much great stuff, miss is that the baseline price of a record at a lot of the tables is $20!

but yeah the time I went I just had to quit looking for MINDBLOWING FUNKY PSYCHE RARE OOP!! and ended up getting a bunch of Echo and the Bunnymen / Siouxsie / Jesus and Mary Chain albums for five bucks apiece. still got a lot of great stuff.

dmr (Renard), Saturday, 4 November 2006 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

you have to minimize wasting time gawking at the insanity. i was idly flipping some of those $20-$30 psyche things and in the middle of a box this dude had a 13th Floor Elevators acetate priced at $5,000(!). later i thought i had found some good $2 reggae until the Deadly Dragon guy informed me that the 2 stood for $200 each in that box.

manute lol (sanskrit), Saturday, 4 November 2006 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

xpost yeah! I was just trying to describe Fahey's music last night, recommending him to a friend. Serene and soothing but stimulating too itnever fades into the background like some "ambient" thing.

that Bob Seger album is a great one, and Mongrel rocks even harder. Seger's really weird about his old stuff, never really done a proper reissue of his best stuff on Capitol and Reprise. I guess Smokin OPs came out on CD recently but that's probably the least interesting album of his pre-hitmaker phase. Eventually...

we talked to dave from polvo/BT in chapel hill, and we're gonna try to set up a show with them...

Smegma Pi (plsmith), Monday, 6 November 2006 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

stuff i got at the thrift store today:

francoise hardy - loving (i like this one)

buffalo springfield - again (i only own the twofer. so, um, i guess i need this. wait, no i don't. i got it anyway.)

jan & dean - gotta take that one last ride (double album comp)

francoise hardy - the "yeh-yeh" girl from paris!

quicksilver - first album (which i didn't have a copy of for some reason. some day i need to find a minty mint copy. this is a 70's pressing.)

spanky & our gang

tracy nelson - poor man's paradise

donovan - barabajagal

jeff airplane - crown of creation (which i was also living without. nice copy.)

tracy nelson - homemade songs (later stuff on flying fish)

donovan in concert

donovan - for little ones (stand-alone copy of one of the albums that came in that box that i have never bought. i think. i'm no donovan scholar. super-clean copy. so hard to find clean donovan records at the thrift store. or jeff airplane rekkerds! or quicksilver rekkerds! so they sold the stuff that came in the box seperately apparently. i will have to buy that thing one of these days. i heart donovan.)

the sunshine company (nice copy! and they had two copies! i took the better one. the one i left was kinda dirty.)

spanky & our gang - like to get to know you

link wray - link wray (one of my all-time fave 70's records. and much nicer than my copy. looks unplayed.)

sealed copy of the soundtrack to the disney movie *Scandalous John* by rod mckuen(!!). i have never ever heard of this movie. it starred brian keith. one track is entitled "Warbag".

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

wow, only 400 copies of that in the world.

it was the ep right before "Meet The Residents", much much better than that album. if you haven't heard it, I'll post it

saw The Knife live on friday, great staging & video (actually owes a lot to 80's/90's Residents live shows, with most of the menacing strangeness removed)
Steve Hillage - L / Green (don't like the singing, at all)
Lithops - Queries / Mound Magnet (first is a great comp of 90's stuff, the latter is a new one, noisy scattered riffless, doing nothing for me)

re: skot's ebay find

This self- produced, fledgling musical effort was intended as a promotional Christmas card

not to state the obvious, but reminiscent of the south park guys

manute lol (sanskrit), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, this is insane:

"In 1980 a Third Reich 'N' Roll Collectors Box was produced in a limited edition of 30 copies of which 25 were released. These came with a hand pressed red marbled vinyl edition of the record with silk screened sleeve and labels, in a velvet-lined black wooden box with a sliding panel featuring hand-screened version of the cover art. Also enclosed are two signed and numbered lithographs by Irene Dogmatic. The entire box was enclosed in a drawstring bag made from a piece of Christo's work "Running Fence". A censored version of the cover art was created for 2500 copies for export into Germany were Nazi symbolism is illegal. The EuroRalph CD comes with no bonus tracks and was offered through mail-order with a double floppy disk set of the "Third Reich 'N' Roll" multimedia program."

i'm soooooooo glad i'm not a residents fanatic/completist.

that is from here:

http://www.theresidents.co.uk/discography/discaudio1.html

anyway, yah, the 70's stuff is the coolest to me. duck stab! jeezus, to think third reich & roll came out in 1976. fuck a sex pistols!

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 10 November 2006 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

The Kosugi's good! It's neither as repetitive nor as drone-based as I would have hoped, but it stills beats the shit out of 95% of the solo violin improvisation out there. there are parts where i swear he dips his toes into christmas carols; i'm drunk though, so i'll have to get back to you.

there are also gorgeous-but-fleeting moments where he begins to sing in weird harmonies with the violin. more of that pls!!!

"Scott, is that a Dave and Ansel Collins *album*?"

yeah! it's really good. it's not that uncommon, is it? my copy is on big tree, home of lobo, brownsville station, hot chocolate, and many other wonderful artists.

i don't know danny o'keefe song titles. i'll check. i love the two albums i have. breezy stories and the global blues. now i want all his albums. he had a pretty big hit and then none of his albums really did anything. but like i said, the two i have are awesome. if there hasn't been a mojo magazine type revival for him there should be.

"Down in Virginia," Jimmy Reed
"Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie," Foghat

From the Moon to Pluto Back Down to Earth (Rrrickey), Thursday, 16 November 2006 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

Scott, my college radio station had *all* of Danny O'Keefe's albums. I heard that one song on a mix tape and was able to pull the LP off the shelf and play it on my show. He lives somewhere out here in the Pacific Northwest; I saw him open an outdoor show for Willie Nelson about three years ago.

From the Moon to Pluto Back Down to Earth (Rrrickey), Thursday, 16 November 2006 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of don't want to listen to anything but Jimmy Reed and Foghat after the two songs listed above, but I have tons of stuff to play for work.

From the Moon to Pluto Back Down to Earth (Rrrickey), Thursday, 16 November 2006 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

click that o'keefe link i posted. there is some interesting info about him on there. he got a record contract by singing on the phone to ahmet ertugun. and he talks about what he has been up to. i had no idea he was still around. i love his voice. harry nilsson fans would dig those records i would think.

Thanks, Scott! Really interesting guy. I forgot he'd written "The Road" (I have a thing for that "Running on Empty" album) and "Quits" (which Gary Stewart did a great version of). Cool that he gives props to his '50s rock roots, too. Gene Vincent was from right across the water from where I grew up.

all of it!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

that particular tune, "six pack days," is from the new howling hex record "nightclub version of the eternal." for a good overview, you could get the "1-2-3" cd that collects stuff from the 3 vinyl-only releases. also i'd recommend neil michael hagerty "introducing the howling hex," great double album full of jams.

it's an awesome cover

Coloured Balls Ball Power

ok Jack so hey how is that track "G.O.D." ??!? As long as I remember being on the mailing lists of various psych dealer catalogs (this would be the pre-ebay era when you actually got these things in ye olde surface mail), this track was always pumped and hyped as being the most massive guitar jam EVAH ... I never saw a cheap enough copy of that Aussie comp that it appeared on, to be able to verify. I see that it has been included as a bonus track on these new CB reissues; so .... what's the verdict??

"Terrorizer" magazine comp. Standouts so far (I only know the bands, not the titles of the pieces presented - the magazine came with 2 CDs, the other being a death metal comp, and there were 2 inserts for the death metal disc, instead of one of each):

Converge track (short, brutal, demented sounding vox, almost like a yelping dog)

Unleashed track (hardcore/metal w/bellowing lead singer, no idea what the guy looks like, but listening to his vox, one imagines a massive skinhead dude w/loads of tattoos)

Xasthur track (black metal w/ridiculous tr00 kvlt frostbitten production sound - sounds like it was recorded in the 1920's! had it on in the car last night, driving through long spooky unlit country lane, the music was actually quite effective & somewhat unnerving)

Negura Bunket track (symphonic black metal w/weird vocals & incredibly shrill guitar tone, heavy pressure sound. Long, progressive-rock-ish instrumental break. Best track on the comp, def.)

the new coverge album is so great. but i love all their albums. i like all the xasthur stuff too.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 20 November 2006 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Pulled the titles from Terrorizer's site:

5 -- Converge -- Hellbound (EXCLUSIVE) --1.08
6 -- Unleashed -- In Victory Or Defeat (EXCLUSIVE) --2.42
7 -- Xasthur -- Victim Of Your Dreams (EXCLUSIVE) --6.05
8 -- Negura Bunget -- Conoas Terea Tacuta (EXCLUSIVE) --7.11

Negura Bunget are Romanian, I believe? Their track is fantastic, I've got it on again now.

so this is worth getting? I saw it at the record store and it looked like a lot of snippets and unfinished outtakes.

have ghost ever had a bad album cover? they are all super-cool. maybe that one they did with The Other Two. but that doesn't count. actually that one wasn't that bad either. better than the record.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

renard. i've only listened to half the album so far, but it's pretty good. according to amg, it's half songs that were recorded together and half outtakes of drum solos with synthy squirrly stuff overlaid on top.

mostly Faust (after reading the Andy Wilson book, which imo isn't really the greatest thing ever written)

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

no, it's not 'good' writing & 80% of it is just him talking about the released music

but I like the politics (wilson is a deep socialist) and there's a lot of key info in the first two chapters

we still need an extended interview with Graupner about his gear, Frith was telling me things about their networked black monolith control panels that just blew my mind

Smegma Pi (plsmith), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

no, it's not 'good' writing & 80% of it is just him talking about the released music

yeah, and going off on god knows what philosophical rants with the thinnest relation to the songs - it reminded me of Beatle fans who attribute the creation to something john lennon said once in an interview. I did also like the intro stuff, for setting up German rock music in relation to everything else at the time.

Still, I couldn't help but think it's books like this that contribute to Faust's "mythical" reputation. Apparently, no one can get close enough to them to get enough factual material to fill a book -- and really, I'm not so sure a travelogue of Faust's daily lives 1970-75 would shed much revelatory light on their music. However, I'd also like to know more about what they did in the studio, Graupner's thoughts on what he thinks he accomplished (or Faust got away with). And I would like to know why this member dropped out of society, and how Faust deals with having two versions of the band now, and why do they call both of them Faust???

Also, I don't agree with a lot of Wilson's opinions of the records. The first record is my least fave, and don't think the Munic A & B tracks are as lacking as he does.
