why are you sitting around making out with chicks while pondering the significance of personal non-events that occurred years earlier? shouldn't you be paying better attention? this question has been bothering me for three minutes tho less of a burning question than "omfg why is louis using the word 'courting'".

not meant as a dig, i like u and all but it's weirding me out,

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Dear AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg,

I wasn't "pondering," or anything -- we were just sitting in her dorm going through the usual pre-making-out flow of things, and I was thinking "great, we are both definitely prepping to make out," and then there was this brief realization: "Oh man, that's exactly what Julie did at her house that one time, I can't believe I didn't pick up on it." It wasn't until later that I actually thought back over the age-16/17 Julie incident and sat around laughing at all the obvious cues I'd missed.

(Also the Julie incident had always confused me, because she had taken me back to her house, and then we hung out for a while, and then suddenly she seemed really frustrated and angry and said "fine, I'll give you a ride back to town" -- I'd never understood why she was annoyed until I realized I was SO OBLIVIOUS to the invitations, and she was probably feeling really rejected.)

(Also she was like 27 or something and I was in high school, so possibly the "rejection" stung more? Though the age difference was half of why it never occurred to me that she'd be coming on to me. And if you're 27 and trying to get with high school boys, c'mon, make the first move.)

Best,
Nabisco

nabisco otm (nabisco), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

P.S. The realization probably came before the making-out part, like maybe during the collegiate "sit next to me on the bed and look through this photo album with me" part. (I find that one touching -- it's like "here's a crash course of a whole bunch of stuff about me as a person before we make out.")

like maybe during the collegiate "sit next to me on the bed and look through this photo album with me" part

This happened to me once when I was 22, at this friend's apartment. I had a total crush on her, but we'd been friends for several years, and it just seemed too weird to make a move, even if it was perfect in so many ways: we were sitting very close on her futon, her roommate was out of town, and she was the one who initiated the photo-album scenario (or was it a dictionary? "let's look up funny words" -- anyway). I still kick myself for not just saying "what the hell" and going through with it, especially since several months later she started dating someone to whom she's now married.

Sometimes the pictures are a little scary, though. I remember this one girl showing me the framed pictures of her family in her room, and talking about them a little, in that nice intimacy-creating way, but then half an hour later I was faintly disturbed by this photo of her dad kinda ... looking over us.

Gear, I came across that "fuck-want" here before seeing the original come from Beales, so I spent the past fifteen minutes thinking you were REALLY GROSS as opposed to REALLY FUNNY.

OK that reminds me of a hilarious story that has nothing to do with any of this. My friend L1berty's was visiting her family in Kentucky and her...not-that-swift it seems brother-in-law refused to go to whatever movie they had wanted to see, claiming it was "girly" or some such (forget what it was, something like, I dunno, Mona Lisa Smile or Crash or something or other) and then insisted on going to see BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, because, and I quote, "It's a cowboy film, that's a MAN'S film."

During the anal sex scene he apparently yelled "WHAT THE HELL KIND OF MOVIE HAVE YOU TAKEN ME TO"

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think the pre-makeout photo album is about more than the sitting-close thing. I think it's basically protection against feeling like a one-night stand. For one thing, it's an activity, so it's not like you just came through the door and started stripping -- more like you were "hanging out" for a bit and then just happened to get it on. And then, more importantly, it's like a hardcore "learn about me" activity, which seems ... well, I've encountered people for whom this seemed psychologically important, I guess? Like they needed to ground themselves and introduce you to photo surrogates of their friends and family before they were ready to fool around.

I think you mostly get this if you happen to be a quiet person, though -- like if those first "well, here's my room" moments are a little quiet and tentative, then hey, let's talk about these pictures. Suddenly I'm almost nostalgic for the slow lead-ups these things could take in one's late teens.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

My worst photo-album moments and fauxto-pas:

- high-school girl showing me pictures of her dog Bruno in photo album held directly beneath giant breasts in low-cut top, in US History class -- ME: "What's Bruno doing there?" HER: "Uhh, that's a cat." (okay this was 80% because I was distracted but 20% because her tits were actually obstructing my view)

- "Wow, your mom looks really young there!" -- directed at picture of daughter when she weighed more and had a bad haircut (especially bad because part of the point of showing me the album seemed to be to say "I used to be fat" and check reaction)

- Evading make-out moment due to picture of sister who lived in town and looked way cooler

- Picture of girlfriend's parents as young couple at costume party in blackface and ooga-booga "jungle savage" gear

- Doing too much mental detective work and asking who took the nude "self-portraits" that didn't seem possible given the camera's lack of a timer mechanism

Best photo-album moment: coming across uncaptioned series of photos of someone serving as one-day honorary postmistress of Japanese prefecture -- "Umm, so what's with the wearing a suit and being given a tour of some kind of sorting facility by a bunch of middle-aged Japanese men?"

People's vacation shots are the really grueling part. I mean, god, I know what Paris looks like, I know what you look like, I can put two and two together. Show me what you looked like when you were in high school, tell me funny stories about your college friends, and let's end it.

UART variations (ex machina), Friday, 2 February 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Let's see, they are not pork or shellfish...but I think they count as having cloven feet, so I'm gonna guess no.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 2 February 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

koalas have toes. does that count as cloven?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 2 February 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know, I don't think anything with toes is kosher! Hold on, I'll look it up.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 2 February 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

Of the "beasts of the earth" (which basically refers to land mammals with the exception of swarming rodents), you may eat any animal that has cloven hooves and chews its cud. Lev. 11:3; Deut. 14:6. Any land mammal that does not have both of these qualities is forbidden. The Torah specifies that the camel, the rock badger, the hare and the pig are not kosher because each lacks one of these two qualifications. Sheep, cattle, goats and deer are kosher.

Dear Nabisco:

You are very OTM here:

GRRRRRRRRRRR okay I'm sorry but I get REALLY sick of that fucking argument, and will not countenance it except maybe from well-meaning 16-year-olds who just had their MINDS BLOWN by the cool English teachers they're going to get their college-app recommendations from, or MAYBE stoned college freshmen just learning the wonders of the Stoner Solipsism Bubble, because at least that's preferable to their getting their Mind Blown Explanation to the Universe(TM) from Ayn Rand or Macro-econ 101.

Our opinions are subjective, no shit; if this makes talking about them an "exercise in futility," then you are claiming that ALL HUMAN COMMUNICATION IS POINTLESS, yes, no point sharing our subjective impressions and comparing them and being interested in other people's and maybe letting other people's subjective impressions influence our own, etc. etc.

And we know for a fact you DON'T BELIEVE THAT, because you've bothered posting to a message board and trying to communicate with other people, beyond which you're STILL ALIVE, and if you honestly believed in such a bullshit anti-human fake-logical position, you would be so much better off just killing yourself and not bothering the rest of us in our alleged Solipsism Bubbles.

P.S. All those caps are not just textual emphasis and are literally me YELLING AT YOU.

nabisco on Monday, March 26, 2007 2:04 PM (31 minutes ago)

But sometimes I wonder why you take the time to type out posts like this? Is it just because you are that passionate about communication? Or are there forces inside you that make it impossible to withold OTMness when it is needed?

Fondly,

^@^, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

(a) Cuttyhorse.jpg is not a photoshop. You just tell yourself it's photoshopped so you don't have to face the truth, which is that Cutty is some weird kind of vampire that can turn into a horse.

(b) I'll try to FAP this coming month!

(c) I read some pragmatists as an undergrad, and yeah, kinda liked them a lot. I went to grad school over the past few years, but that was for an arts degree (fiction), so I didn't exactly learn any hot philosophical or critical-theoretical science to drop on anyone. Mostly I learned how to spend more than six hours in a row working on writing without going nuts.

(d) Who do I look like, LJ?

nabisco, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for the answer nabisco. i think learning to write is one of the best ways to think about things and 'philosophizing' is about the worst and least useful.

i call bullshit too. you guys are on ilm at least ten hours a day. probably 10,000 words a day easy in nabisco's case.

scott seward, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

- My favorite indiepop label of all time is probably Slumberland.

- Jess, if you're calling bullshit on the "without going crazy" part, I can't necessarily argue. But the six hours bit is ... well, true and non-extraordinary! Keep in mind that writing fiction was 90% of the non-reading work I had to do in grad school, and I needed to produce 20-30 pages of fiction every three weeks, and my primary task in life was to have that fiction be as good as possible. So on the rare days I didn't have work or classes, I could very easily get up, get breakfast, wander around outlining in my head until 2, and then sit down and write straight till 8 or beyond -- interruptions only for peeing, pacing, or maybe a walk around the block to think about what comes next. It would take me at least two sessions like that to get to the end of a short story, and at least one more to revise and finish it. It's not hard or unusual -- plenty of career writers will tell you they put in 3 hours every morning, and plenty of people go on those ridiculous writing sprees where they lock the door for a weekend and come out with a rough draft of a novel.

- Haha Scott my two years of grad school were spent without an internet connection at home! Also for one of them my TV was in the living room and got no reception. I got a lot of work done in those days.

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

Haha I think the only adequate approach to take here is that of Cocorosie's psychologist, who would say that while it's not prohibited for white singers to say "nigger," it is (shall we say) "very very interesting" that one would choose to put it in the song, then have to sing it to groups of people every third night for the next few years, then trade your drum loops for beatboxing from your black backing band (haha then get quoted in infamous "Kill Whitey" article), all leading up to a general chin-scratching steeple-fingered "very interesting, Cocorosie, you are very interested in black people."

Actually, there's a place for preciousness and a place for skeptical snark. Only when the two coincide do you have a problem, and then only when you're on the side of preciousness. In fact, it's fair to say that a process of natural selection has occurred, driving out some of ILX's whimsy in favour of hard fact and mordant wit. There's no denying that a great moment of lightness still has the power to silence the mockers, though. Posters such as estela and nabisco are pass masters at this.

roxy, if it matters, i wear houseshoes

jaxon, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

(a) "Hoosteen" backwards would be "Neetsooh," which is one of very few mispronunciations of my name that I don't like, because it makes me feel like the person is trying to make up for not knowing how to say it by choosing the option that allows him to call me "neat." It is usually "him," with this pronunciation. And no, I had never noticed that about HOOS.

(b) I beat up a panda.

(c) I do not wear houseshoes. I would describe my normal around-the-house wear, but it tends to consist of random accretions of whatever garments are scattered near where I'm sitting, added to or removed based on temperature fluctuations, which can leave you in arrangements that are perfectly normal but really not flattering to describe. P.S. Roxy I feel like something is wrong with the universe now that I have heard your speaking voice on YouTube.

(d) Mawndy and Joan are wrong about how to pronounce my name. I'm sorry. This happens because I don't bother correcting anyone on how to pronounce my name. Mostly because I can't pronounce it exactly right, either. The "T" and the "S" are one sound, a kind of hard, sharp S. If you can't make this sound, pretend the "T" is silent. If you CAN make this sound, don't make it around me, because I'll feel bad.

(e) Chances that me and HOOS are the same person seem slim: I'd like to think that if I were splitting off some kind of multiple-personality Stephen King / Fight Club thing, the other personality would do something more interesting than just post to ILX, too.

nabisco, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Strangely, I just read this piece because a friend posted it on facebook. Only after I finished the whole thing, nodding to myself the entire time how OTM* it was, did I realize it was from 2010, and only after that did I realize it was by Nabisco.

*OTM isn't even really an adequate term honestly, because it implies "this is shit I already thought but hadn't put into words this well" and I think this piece goes way beyond just stating well what I already thought.
