saw new john adams opera 'a flowering tree' last night. not entirely my thing -- I'm all for 'lovely things' but the music just seemed simple, not much to chew on or relax into or lose myself in. the three Indonesian dancers who acted as proxies for the singers were incredible though, slow fluid synchronized micro-gestures flowing around the stage at all times, far more musical than any of the actual sounds being made -- whole thing worth seeing just for them

HAMPTON GREASE BAND - MUSIC TO EAT - !!!! seconded - thanks to julio for introducing me to it if you've not heard it seek it out - like capt b's finest hours crossbred with the allman brothers on a caffiene overdose. - and a man shouting random things from books as lyrics how can you resist?

nondor nevai - the a capella cantata.

ian, Thursday, 8 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

The older my necronomitron shirt gets, the more the screenprint flakes off and shows the "BODY GEAR" logo on the shirt underneath, which actually makes me like it more.

isn't that der tpk the bee's knees, ian? was listening to it again today. it made me nostalgic in a good way. just like that first times new viking album.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it's great! it reminds me of that that nineties band Blue, except der tpk come across as somewhat less sentimental, if that makes sense. we finally got all the new siltbreeze stuff at work, so i'm a happy camper. do you not like the new TNV scott? i think it might even be better than the LP! it just SOUNDS great.

I've been rocking the Judee s/t lately too ... so good but still doesn't hit the highs that Heart Food does for me. It's just one of those things. I will never understand people who prefer her s/t just like I will never understand people who like harmonia better than deluxe, just like I will never understand people who like rumours better than fleetwood mac.

Nothing but SCG for me lately..

Bullet Through the Last Temple
SuperCulto

yeah, edward, that Blue! and yeah, they were good! and i dunno who if gnarly sceptre is a new yorker or not, but we got the car commercials & second home blitz single at the store.. i think the first one is OOP. dan dimaggio doesn't post on ILE/ILM anymore does he? i think he migrated to term-bo or something. not to mention blastitude.

ian, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't heard the new times new viking. i haven't been to the record store in a while. that first record is kinda perfect though. i don't really know how they could improve on it. or even if they should improve on it.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

I think I still have a blue demo tape from the late 80s / early 90s. they were like the poor man's halo of flies. that's not a bad thing tho, the stooges were the poor man's mc5 after all. sometimes poor men live like kings. we interviewed blue for ugly american once.

Edward III, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

i think my love of the new times new viking comes from my habit of listening to sides rather than listening to complete LPs.

this morning i listened to that xpressway comp again, and now i am listening to side 4 of tusk.

also played:
pink reason 7"
figures of light "it's lame"/"i jes' wanna go to bed" single
psychedelic horseshit/times new viking split 7"

ian, Thursday, 15 March 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

so I pulled out that blue cassette - demo tape with two albums worth of material they couldn't get anybody to release back in '91. side A is called "pulp", side b is called "good horse".

internet is useless in finding info on these guys.ua isn't much help either. here's what they had to say about their only official release in the interview:
The seven inch was pressed on black vinyl to erase racial tensions in North America. Seven inches, however, proved to be less than adequate.

they truly were a burning hunk of soused manhood. RIP

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

they had an LP! i have it. it's got a paste on cover of a black and white photo of a woman's face. i don't remember what the label was, if any. i'll check on that later if i can dig out the record.

skot while looking for the blue tape I discovered I have *two* copies of the perfect prescription on cassette. if yer interested I'll send you one...

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

my copy of perfect prescription is really scratched up from a few rough nights :(

ian, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

another band named blue on wikipedia CLASSIC

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

that's a bitch. ironic tho, since that album's all about how needles can fuck you up.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

p.s. that other band blue looks terrible and DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE "NOTABLE." I wonder if the wikipedia community at large would find the pigfucky Blue to be notable.

ian, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

at the very least their entry would get linked to from the ugly american page so that would probably count fer something.

love this line from the terrible blue's wiki: With a mix of rock, grunge, and new styles, they are able to create new music.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

it's like they took spoilt milk and made cheese

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

I never heard of this Blue band. which seems surprising to me because I was all over anything and everything scumrock during that era. weird. In fact the only band from Philly I even remember is the beloved Monkey 101. they totally ruled. but yeah i don't sprechen ze Blue.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 March 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

notable lyrics include "got a case of beer for you ... black eyed, fat lipped girl" and "my head/my head/confusion/my head/my head/confusion/my head/little honey/my head" and even "i poked the man who would not die." the single of theirs i've got on ERL RECORDS out of albany i don't remember being as good as the LP. putting it on now, i think the most notable difference is the way the vocals are recorded. they're further back/more muffled on the LP. the single has more in the way of generic metallisms, too. the songs are WEIRDER on Solid State... guitar parts weirder, unexpected breaks and odd repetitive riffs.

ian, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

from the flipped out records page:
BLUE - solid state LP (FOR02) long time coming after five gone sevens for this first and only full length from the town of philadelphia.…freaked stretched excursions to blazing bursting explosions….out of print

ian, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

FOUR MORE seven inches i need to get now?

ian, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

ooh, I was born in Albany (well actually Niskayuna but whatever) which makes my ignance doubly weird. I need to hear them! I do remember ERL, though. Your description makes them sound very Drunks With Guns...

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

see, i never really listened to drunks with guns. i never even got into halo of flies, who were band that like.. people (used to) like, right?

ian, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, people used to like them. Tom from the band started the Amphetemtine Reptile label. It's just kind of scum rock --- GREAT scum rock, mind -- but I would never claim they were better than motorhead or anything. and yeah, DWG would also be in that vein. I liked Halo when they did that pop song. lemme see if i can upload to leonardo....

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

i remember going to a show in philly and we were turning off th highway near th city and one of the members was in a car along side of us and rolled down the window and yelled ."We just wanted to say "Blue" says hi!!"

danbunny, Friday, 16 March 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

blue was closer to halo of flies than drunks with guns, more rock less evil. if you want to check out drunks with guns look for the alter human industrial fetishism 7". their other 7"s were good but that one takes the cake. then it crumbles it up and snorts it. they had like a different bassist every time they put out a record and each one was more pummeling than the last. halo and drunks were collector scum catnip, people paying $100 for a 7". crazy.

blue was somewhere along the flesheaters / killdozer / cows / mule continuum. now I really wanna hear that lp. maybe I'll see if I can leonardo the blue demo. Ian do you do leonardo or do you only listen to music pressed onto petroleum polymers? I'd dub ya a copy of the blue demo if ya want.

besides blue the other philly bands I remember liking from the early 90s are king carcass and orifice. king carcass were great and almost as obscure as blue. why do philly bands end up unsung and forgotten? must be something in the water.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

was erl the place by mother earth's, stormy? no, that was flipped out (where i got pressured into buying bunnybrains 7" one time) right? was earl on madison by lark? god, wheres my memory gone?

i remember the name blue, but not the sound...i remember flyers for them.

bb, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

"*two* copies of the perfect prescription on cassette. if yer interested I'll send you one..."

bad news; my tape deck's fucked so I can't make a copy of the blue demo for you ian. the good news is I got inspired to hook up a box to the computah and start converting a bunch of old demo tapes. stuff that never made it to vinyl or cd. some good shit in there, unreleased peach of immortality, king carcass, monster magnet (back when they sounded like a garage rock version of hawkwind), bands nobody heard of. and of the course the long lost blue tape. stay tuned.

sun dial: other way out

bb, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

not really my fave melanie album. though she looks great on the cover. and it does have "some day i'll be a farmer" and "some say(i got devil)" on it and i like those a bunch. (was never much of a brand new key fan)

scott seward, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

im not so into this one either....i downloaded it ages ago, but never really lstened...and the living bell routine is pretty sickening...you can tell the whole gag is going downhill. mind, i keep playuing "brand new key" just to be irritating. it is one of the better covers.

scott seward, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

it's worth 40 dollars.

scott seward, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

totally why i picked it up. already had the boot cd. this one isn't the gatefold though. is that less desirable?

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i didn't actually mean, "it's worth 40 dollars if you were gonna sell it", i don't know what it's worth anymore, it's actually cheaper now for a nice vinyl copy than it was years ago, though it's still worth something - 20 bucks maybe? - what i meant was, the actual music is worth 40 bucks or more. it's priceless!

scott seward, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

i borrowed a really beat up copy of that about a year ago. i should really download it.

this terry reid thing is crazy to listen to. i know that page asked him to be the singer in led zep and he turned it down....but listening to this (which came out a year before zep 1), it seems like page must've totally coached plant to sing like reid...some of the phrasing and singing on this sounds exactly like zep era plant....unless plant already sounded like that...i never heard that band of joy thing he was in or hornswaggle or whatever that other weird band he was in.

who set up that thrones show? boy did they piss off the people on the decibel board:

http://decibelmagazine.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=824&page=1#Item_0

GUTTERALSPAN:

I would like to second the request for you latest appearence in metal maniacs, as i do read that mag monthly. As for wire, good for you hipster twat. The thing is the show you are promoting isnt a bad gig: some of the people over on southernlord forums are probably cumming buckets about this line up. It is very solid. However this forum do to its small size of posters, has different dynamics. and one rule of going about things which is to post stuff like this in the street team area. Taking pot shots at the people who post here is dumb and shows your lack of character. So i am glad you write for a bunch of mags and think your high and mighty, but in fact you are largly what is wrong with metal music these days and your piss poor elitest attitude towards others is uncalled for. But hey i know it makes you feel better at night, helps you deal with your inner demons to trash people you dont know, trash peoples work, etc. Your pathetic, and hell that is pretty fucking sad. grow up.

"what t-shirt are you wearing" is a thread that has popped up in various metal forums i have posted in. Big fucking deal. Not that you ever need advice or any one elses opinion on extreme music, but if you took a look through this board you would find a great deal of people who do know what they are talking about. Talking about the music most of us live for you, on the other hand, know it all, thus you must be a god of the metal world, posting insulting shit on a board with 12 posters, being an internet warrior. damn i wish i could be like you. and then when the day of being a false metal warrior is over, you go and write about how metal is for stupid people and drone is the new thinking mans metal for wire audiences. go fuck yourself and die, you pathetic little bitch.

asincerly,
primalvoid

scott seward, Monday, 2 April 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

i did see child abuse. they would have been better if they did not have as strobe making me nauseous. i also commented to someone later that they i thought they sounded like an imitation of the early sightings records, which is true to a point. also a similar sound to a lot of that load records stuff i grew up gorging on.

Hey Tim....

The Billy Synth LP is pretty neat. I was expecting synth-punk-y, but it's more just straight punk with occasional synth. Although there's a natty synth instrumental, and the Seeds cover is worth a pop.

What's the ep like? I think he put out a bunch of stuff in various Billy incarnations...

subway LP (weird uk folk duo; do you guys know this one?)
i saw this record at the store the other day. good?

max roach - we insist! freedom suit
is this the one w/the big choir or the one with abbey lincoln singing lead on most of the tracks? love both of them

1. Yes, good. Sort of an ISB thing. There's one cool track with fuzz guitars. I like it a lot. I got a cheap used copy; i think most of those Amber Soundroom reissues are expensive when new.

2. this is the one with abbey lincoln on most tracks, but i have the one with the big choir and love that one too.
