I just ate the worst Indian I think I have ever had :( It was too spicy, yet had no flavour at all. The rice was watery. The meat was stringy. The naan bread was hard as a rock. It hurts me in my heart. Damn food court.

Trayce, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't yet tried this place i just ordered from... there's a site i use that handles food deliveries for restaurants in the area (you place your order online and pay with a credit card) and they recently added this one. the indian restaurant's $20 minimum suxors, but on the plus side there'll be tons of leftovers...

i am going to go make tikka masala, inspired by this thread.

remy bean, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

Mmm I was craving the local Indian restaurant's korma sauce today. Something to look forward to for payday.

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

i has a food

get bent, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

You need to take one PATH train to Journal Square and go to the end of Newark Ave. (assuming you're in NYC). Rasoi for your standard northern Indian dishes, Dosa House or Dosa Hut for South Indian, and hit a sweet shop for dessert. Also worth stopping in one of the various all-purpose knick-knack/statuette/DVD/rug/cooking supply/bookstores.

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

or you can just go to jackson heights

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

i helped make indian food for a homemade indian food thanksgiving last thanksgiving and the lady at the indian food store recommended a 75-cent thing of ASAFOETIDA fart-negating gum powder. a little goes a long way and i tell you the farts was indeed negated (cool)

iiiijjjj, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

asafoetida is crucial to samosas

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

best indian food I've had was in Iselin NJ. Lauren and I have a good Rasoi (either that's spelled wrong or maybe I"m thinking of a different place?) story, going with my sister. They wrote down our appetizers on one sheet and entrees on the other. Lost the first one. Brought out the entrees only. Much confusion. They figure since they forgot the appetizers, we wouldn't want them since the entrees were already brought out. We were still hungry though.

Like today at sripraphai in queens, guy comes out and says "do you want the appetizers first or all at the same time?" we say appetizers first (crazy concept that), so they bring out the appetziers. Excatly 40 seconds later they bring out the entrees.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

chicago folx should know its all about devon ave

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

i would live there if it wasn't required that i would have to sometimes go to other parts of the city.

deej, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Moghul in Edison, NJ is good for classed-up but not overly poncey Indian food. Good tandoori

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

There are also a few good South Indian places on Rte 27 a little ways south of New Brunswick

now i entirely want indian food...but am in midtown manhattan and know no real decent options...

bb, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Minar on 32nd between 6th and 7th I think? And there's another one on 47th or 48th, whatever Brazil row is.

But the best of course is the Kwik Meal cart, 46th and 6th I think. Lamb and Chicken over rice with salad and raita. Can't be beat.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

new place in providence has nice variety of regional indian dishes, very tasy, also where you can get the aforementioned brunch buffet:

3 foot dosa
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/148/389239183_82abd3bd5e.jpg?v=0

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

dimple on 30th around broadway was/is pretty good for veg indian. i don't know their delivery area, though. there are some very good upscale places in midtown, but that's probably not what you want.

i'd love to go out to j.c. again soon for dinner or lunch or something. the last restaurant indian food i had was from imperial palace or whatever the hell it's called on manhattan ave, and it was vile. very sad and irritating to have to dump about $30 worth of mostly uneaten food into the trash. on the plus side, since there isn't any good indian near our apt i've become pretty good at cooking it.

lauren, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

i'll believe it when i eat it.

ian, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

that dosa was awesome, i had a dosa that was deepfried with paneer and garlic.

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

oh, totally forgot that cart guy..but its madness after 12...and i wont get out of here untill then...everything else around here is about as good as 6th street indian...and more pricey ... hmmm what to do?

bb, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

aww 6th street indian can be good!

get bent, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

ben, have you had Minar? I think it's above average, fast, decent deal. Not a fancy place but a buffet style line, but you don't serve yourself.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

6th St. stinks. Yeah it's cheap. So is Subway.

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

man, i love indian food. i am going to a wedding this weekend, which is reminding me of the last wedding i went to, which was an indian wedding - huge buffet of amazing indian food, incl desserts - so many things. this wedding will be more fun but it won't have indian food.

rrrobyn, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

jbr: 1 40. Garlic Naan
[Exotic Tandoori Breads] $2.95

so essential.

dan selzer: Minar on 32nd between 6th and 7th I think?

that place destroys all of the pretenders in so-called "curry hill". not too far from there either. the samosa chat is an incredible goopy mess, the chicken tikka masala is my favorite in the city, i had a version of it with quail once, really good but too many tiny bones in it. the fish curries there are amazing, and it's only a $6-$7 cafeteria style lunch.

sanskrit, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

i had indian food last weekend that was so spicy i couldn't stop hiccuping. i thought i was gonna turn into this girl

the wife and i were rather drunk that night and went home and passed out forgetting to brush our teeth. UGH. waking up in the morning w/stank ass indian food breath is life threatening

jaxon, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

any NYers (ie, Dan) know this place Sirtaj
on West 26th? Stone's throw from work, Sietsema loves it...

Dr Morbius, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

it's next to my friend's old office. i never tried it because it looked so gloomy. why not give it chance? probably cheap, and you could find a new favorite.

one thing - i love sietsema, but the capsule reviews in the voice can be pretty old. there are positive ones for khushie (which has been gross for several years) and sun hop shing tea house (which has been closed for over a year) still running, for instance.

lauren, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

True, but The Paupered Chef found it about 5 weeks ago.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Fact: Siestema used to be in post-No Wave band Mofungo.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

donnot know that place bill, but im rarely over there...

dan, ill take up yr advice another day...32 btwn 6/7 is a jump from the metlife bldg...but as weathers improve and i spend more lunches outdoors im hip to try.

i had "cajun" chix sandwhich instead. but have no idea why its cajun...yest tasty

should there be a field trip out mr selzers way for some noize dinner sometime?

bb, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

so getting my ass there for lunch tomorrow!

tehresa, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

i think i have had imperial palace twice... it was always so-so, kind of greasy and never enough flavor, but when it's the only indian place that delivers to your house, you end up eating it (though i haven't in ages... even though i'm craving indian ridiculously now!)

tehresa, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

post jackson heights favs

sanskrit, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Funny you say that, because we were rushed out of P@nna II before finishing our dessert. We were celebrating a friend's birthday, and we had a big group and ordered lots of stuff, and we weren't even there that long.

i made indian food tonight too! fish curry, lots of spices

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

I want Jackson Heights picks...haven't explored Indian there enough. After first moving out here (nearby) we went to a Chinese Indian (Indian Chinese?) that was literally the dirtiest place I've eaten, but their Manchurian Baby Corn was amazing, and great Kebabs. Haven't been back since. Chowhound fave Spicy Mina is closer to me then Jackson Heights, but it hasn't blown me away. It gets very mixed reviews, it was certainly good when I went, but not life-changing, and probably better then Jackson Diner and other well-known JH places.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

CURRY ROCKISM?

JW, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

LONDON, England (AP) -- If Kanye West were to walk into the British Raj's dining room and order dinner, it would cost the rapper about $17.50. But since the restaurant is delivering -- from Wales to New York -- it's going to cost a bit more.

For a feast of onion bhajees, chapati breads, biryanis, pappadums, a specially prepared fish dish and vegetables on the side, the bill will top $3,900, plus travel and accommodation for the restaurant's head chef.

The meal was requested for West and seven guests by a music promotion company, the restaurant said Sunday. The company had previously ordered food from the restaurant near Cardiff, Wales, for an after-show party for a Snoop Dogg concert in London.

But this is different. Normally, they don't deliver outside a 3-mile radius of the restaurant, which is about 150 miles west of London.

"I was horrified when I heard about this request because of the distance involved," said the restaurant's head waiter, Tarik Mohammed. "It's a long way, and our reputation is on the line. We are doing every thing to make sure the food gets there safely and every thing is aboveboard."

The meal will be prepared, cooled, shrink-wrapped and packed in dry ice in the British Raj's kitchens and -- along with head chef Kaysor Ahmed -- will be helicoptered from Wales to London's Heathrow Airport on Tuesday.

From there, the chef is to hop a flight to New York -- monitoring the food's temperature all the way -- clear customs, and head for Manhattan, where the meal is to be served during a meeting Wednesday.

The fee was arrived at by estimating the restaurant's takings for two evenings, the time Ahmed will be away, Mohammed said.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

it is 12º and windy, i don't know if i am going to the kwik meal today (not that far, but fuck 12º and windy!). but soon. soooooon!

tehresa, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I was on this thread already, FOOL.

that dosa paneer thing was called the Manchurian Dosa. I had way too much paneer, I can't even get into it. I was seriously eating Indian food 5 times a day. I FORGOT TO BRING THOSE CRAZY FIBROUS SUGAR CANE CUBES LAST NIGHT. One thing I did not know is that roti and chapati is the same thing. You ask for a roti and they bring you a chapati in north india.

Yerac, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I drank a bottled mango lassi last night, then as I was done, lazily checked the nutrition info and found that I had just consumed 1,700 calories.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

At this 4 day Indian wedding I went to they had a sugar cane grinder machine that squeezed all the juice out of the stalks. I drank a glass and got really high for 10 minutes.

Yerac, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

I had a minor panic attack.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

indian food is not the most healthy food in the world. all the desserts are like balls of sugar and ghee. they just have bowls of ghee hanging around in case you want to spoon more on top of your food.

Yerac, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i once went to a favourite indian restaurant with a friend who had never been out for indian food (!) and she was all surprised/felt ripped off at how small the dishes appeared, and i was like, oh, they are so full of fat, don't worry, you will be astounded at how fast you get full. and she was.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

i love burfi, especially saffron and pistachio, and those things that are basically burfi but with chickpea flour added. how many calories in a serving of burfi? i don't want to know.

lauren, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

best place i've been to was pakistani, in london.

gbx, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

general indian food info (ny division): although i didn't care for the restaurant in general, the tandoori lamb chops at devi are unbelievable. i hate it when a place that i have no desire to go back to manages to produce one incredible, crave-inspiring dish.

lauren, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

their fried Okra is amazing, and I generally don't like Okra, but its oh so fried. I actually liked Amma more then Devi, and the atmosphere was much more fun, as far as NYC's upscale Indian goes.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

horseshoe, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh, yeah. that cauliflower at devi is pretty fantastic as well. not quite as good as the tandoori lamb, but wow.

anyone been to Brick Lane (the e village place)? i hear they have pretty good UK style curries with good heat.

sanskrit, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

that's exactly how i'd describe brick lane. either there or banjara are good for 6th st, and madras cafe around the corner on 2nd is great (veg only though).

lauren, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

yes to pakistani places in london....some hole in the wall place not far from my camden apt was one of the best meals ive had. and i could afford it, the real kicker back in those days.

(since i managed to put more than a dash of good curry powder into the hummus i made last night, this talk is not provoking cravings today. good curry powder is great, but not when you dont intend to really taste it. ullgh...im going to have to toss the whole batch of hummus)

bb, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Udupi Palace is good for south Indian, it's true.

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

But I've also enjoyed vegetarian Indian food at Raj Darbar, Arya Bhavan, Indian Garden, Tiffin, Mysore Woodlands, India House, Marigold, Moti Mahal, Mount Evert, and Annapurna, so it's not like I'm hurting or anything.

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

s/b "Mount Everest," obv.

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

arya bhavan is really great, too.

what I dig about udupi palace is it seems equally good for North and South Indian.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh really? I could've sworn it was exclusively south Indian. But I haven't been there in a few years.

jaymc, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it has, like, an epic menu. every time I go there I freak out a little about making a decision. I should just start ordering two entrees, to represent the entire subcontinent.

it's a good thing they don't serve meat, really, because my head would explode.

oddly enough i am now eating homemade chicken curry my girlyfriend just made

sanskrit, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

i went out last night in honor of thread, but got persian instead of indian cuisine. massive chicken shawarma platter with grilled onions, whole tomato, amazing yogurt sauce, basmati rice, hummus w/ pine nuts and crisp bread, shirazi. so much food = big lunch today. for $9.50. i've never had that much chicken in any dish of any kind for $9.50. fat today. so good.

strgn, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

i walked past mana's (place i ordered from) earlier today. felt reassured by "a" health rating in window. thinking of having lunch there on friday.

artdamages, Monday, 26 March 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

i had red thai curry on friday night! it was pretty good. but i still have not had really good, uh, nuanced thai curry in this town.

i am maybe too mean/picky/demanding about curry, of all kinds? no. cannot deal with anything in the vicinity of bland, esp from a restaurant, wtf you've got all the spices and flavours, just use them, a lot of them

Food court Indian has new owners. Now is AWESOME TASTY :D :D

palak paneer, butter chicken, saffron rice and naan bread. SOOOO good. I am addicted to spinach.

I was staggered by the Indian at the food court near me in Sydney (Macquarie). Australian Food Court Curry: AAA++. would eat again.

Got Indian food w/dad a few nights ago, leftover chicken makhani was A++++. When I ordered gulab jamen for dessert, he was all "GULAB JAMEN? WHAT IS THAT, A STAR WARS CHARACTER?!"

Jordan, Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

I finally went to one of those Indian Chinese places on Lexington. (Indo Wok-- there were several to choose from, but that was the only one not closed btw lunch and dinner hours).

The entrees were pretty interesting, would explore further. But the hot and sour soup fucking KILLED, one of the best things I have ever tasted.

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 16 August 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

chennai garden opened recently on 28th just west of lex - a+++++++++! really, really great and very cheap veg food. 3 apps (idli and vada, bhel puri, chana chaat) and 2 enormous mains (curry and giant dosa) for $35 incl tip.

i was going to post this on one of the chowhound/foodie threads here, but me and the woman finally got to go to Brick Lane.

$17 for an amazing chicken tikka masala kind of hurt, but worth it in a way. i had this amazing coconut/coriander/cinnamon goat curry. will definitely return for the lunch buffet.

sanskrit, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

saturday night after Sam from Ghostly's birthday party at 205, where I stood at the bar next to Dale and Sarah from Top Chef, at 2:30 am I decided to check out Peshawar, a large, brightly lit cab-stand on Northern Blvd in Jackson Heights. My friend and I walked up and saw about 50 pakistani men sitting at tables facing one direction. I didn't feel comfortable but said friend said "don't be a pussy". We went in and discovered they were all watching TV. I still thought it was weird, for that many people to be eating there at once at that time. We went up and I got some simple butter chicken, rice and an onion naan. The other chicken dishes names I didn't even recognize. Then we heard tons of cheering. They were all watching live cricket. I brought the food home and it was awesome.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

my coworker and super duper close friend is indian. her (white) boyfriend threw a Diwali party on friday even though she was out of town. she has fucking taught him well. he cooked the best indian food i've ever had. it was better than any restaurants i've ever been to and twenty times less greasy.

jaxon, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 08:02 (eighteen years ago)

brick lane and banjara are both good. coconut/coriander/cinammon sounds a little bit like rendang, the delicious malaysian/indonesian/singaporean dish.

Indian food is so addictive. Even when I know I am full I can't stop eating it. My friend who lives in Jax Hts likes Delhi Palace, so I've eaten there a few times. I want to try Spicy Minas. I haven't been to Jackson Diner since it used to be a small little place and we would bring our own wine there.

curry is actually pretty decent for you, however it is important you get it from a reputable curry place. cheaper restaurants tend to make the curries en masse and store them in refrigerated vats to reheat on a per capita basis, while better places will prepare only the curry sauces ahead of time, and the meat/veggies for individual orders.

remy bean, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

i had cheap indian w/ morbs the other day. not the greatest ever, but good in a pinch.

tehresa, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

laurel, what is your indian thing?

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

Korma/kurma, mmmmmmmmm. Prefer lamb if avail. Joy Indian on Flatbush does one so fragrant and thick and dark, I could eat it w/ a spoon, while today's lunch korma is weaker but still acceptable.

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

chicken makhani is not really particularly healthy as it's all butter. but it's delicious and life is short.

i make an excellent korma, if i do say so myself.

horseshoe, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

I mean if a nice mustard-colored, aromatic korma sauce is some kind of Americanized, fake-Indian horror, then I don't want to be right. I love that shit.

Recipe, hs??

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

lunch and dinner for me yesterday was goat korma (qorma?) and mad naan

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'll email it to you later this afternoon, Laurel! it's a Madhur Jaffrey recipe. so i guess Madhur Jaffrey makes an excellent korma, really.

horseshoe, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)
