HOW DO I SHOT?

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

larger hard drive? more bandwidth?

ian, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

I can only pull it out of protools in chunks,
but how to re-assemble/convert?

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

what exactly are you trying to do?

I found out when trying to edit together the five dics of the well tuned piano into a single file that there's a 2 gb file limit on wav files. there's a wav64 file format to handle wav files > than 2gb. but I don't know if that has anything to do with what you're trying to do.

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

fk'n xpost.

are you exporting directly out of protools to mp3 format? maybe try exporting to an intermediary lossless file format that will handle a 5 hour length and then convert to mp3 afterwards?

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

there's a program called mp3join (I think) that will suture split mp3 files together, but its better to convert a single lossless file to mp3 instead of joining a bunch of mp3s cuz of the frame gap issue w/ mp3s.

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

especially if it's one uninterrupted piece of muzik

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

I have a five hour 24bit protools session (sd2 files)
Protools wouldn't let me bounce the whole session, but I was able to bounce it two 24bit sd2 files.
Now I need a way to edit the two parts together and convert to mp3. Or maybe convert, then edit?

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

would a five hour 190kps mp3 even be playable?

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'll try to help you against my better judgment you stinking jam band hippie.

Now I need a way to edit the two parts together and convert to mp3. Or maybe convert, then edit?

you prolly wanna edit then convert, since mp3s have frame gaps. if you stitch the mp3s together there might be a little dropout, and that would disturb excepter fans hippie dance. I wonder why protools won't let you export the entire thing? is it a filesize limit on sd2 files, or a limit on your operating system? can you export in a different file format that might support the size?

would a five hour 190kps mp3 even be playable?

I don't see why not. I'll try to join together some large mp3s I have in the interest of science.

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

i have a 3 hour mp3

jhøshea, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

my protools has what seems like a 2 or 3 hour limit on bouncing anything, which 3xc3pt3r AV guy thinks is just cuz I'm running protools 5 and not 7. I'm going to cut in up into 1 hour chunks, convert to 16 bit wavs, then stitch them back together in Audacity and then export out as mp3.

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

I came across this thread, sounds like sd2 files have a similar 2 gb limit.

http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.php?Number=879600

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't run into that problem making the thang, cuz the 5 hr session was taken from two 2 hour+ minidisc recordings and 3 hour-long DV tapes, plus some other bits n bobs.

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, sounds like the same problem I ran into w/ the welltuned piano. had 5 one hour chunks that were easy to join but a bitch to output as a single 5 hour file.

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't used Audacity, but it's linked to the podcast site I use, so I'm hoping it's designed for the Long Format.

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

audacity supports wav64

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

what's that?

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

hueg lossless file format. you might not need to use it.

Edward III, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

HOW TO CONVERT?

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

d'you remember what error was thrown when pro tools chokes on yr file? I've bounced a 4 hour file before on a fast system with tons of drive space. you should have 'convert after bounce' checked? hardware buffer size maxed out before bouncing?

either that, or if you have tons of drive space, you could consolidate the five hour selection into a single region and then 'export selected as files' (apple + shift + K) to mp3, and you won't have to deal with bounce at all

Milton Parker, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

sD, what operating system and what filesystem u running (click on disk look properties)? FAT32 runs out at 4 gigs so there's probably temp uncompressed stuff that can't get written. Try on NTFS system (Vista or fresh installed XP or Win2k/win2000) or a mac?

i'm running protools 5.0 on OS 9.2, so I assume that's part of the problem.
error msg said "protools don't do that, dog"
pretty sure I can work around the problem by bouncing one hour segments to WAV files, the reassemble in Auacity, exporting to mp3.

JW, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, zoinks. not a PT thing though, OS 9.2 had a legacy 2 GB file size limit

while we're talking pointless shop, transition away from sd2 format to aiff or wavs when you can, I know sd2 was the default file format in PT 5 days but they can't be read by PC's or USB keydrives & cripple you for interop. half the time I dig up old files from my OS9 machine to share with someone I have to reconvert them before sending them out, total waste of time

Milton Parker, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

Dude SD2 can be converted VERY EASILY. Googling: sox sd2 left as exercise for the reader.

JW, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

it's still a drag to have to 'very easily' convert 4 gigs of sd2 files just so you can burn a DVD for your PC owning friend, though thanks for that tip

Milton Parker, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

I've maintained a strict no updates / no connection to the internet on the music making computer, but I can see it's time to upgrade. Thanks 4 tips, dudes.

I'M SURE YOUR OS 9 MACHINE IS VERY FAST AT CONVERTING WITH ITS POWERPC PROCESSOR, OLD MAN!

I've maintained a strict no updates / no connection to the internet on the music making computer, but I can see it's time to upgrade. Thanks 4 tips, dudes.

Ya, get whole new computer!

JW, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

thousands of dollars I don't want to spend and HOLY SHIT HAS MY OS9 MACHINE SLOWED THE FLOW OF MUSIC OUT OF IT? Where's your discog, dog??

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

What're the specs on it? Maybe you can put an OSX setup on a different disk and just use a knob thing to pick which to use. That way you still have old setup.

JW, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

I hate all that switching around, I'd rather just start fresh.
heck if I know what "specs" even are, its a old single G4. It's run Protools just fine until this 5hr jammer. I have a dual G4 that runs the graphics and video and internet stuff. Maybe if I find a nice G5, i'll do a hand-me-down maneuver.

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

I run PT 5.1.1 on a G3 and it is the rock. No time spent distractedly tinkering, I spend all my time working on music and ignoring my friends talking about problems with updating / what things broke in OSX this time.

I do have a powerbook I use to run OSX only stuff but only when I have to, don't give up that G4 if it works

Milton Parker, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

also bad idea to put OSX on an OS9 computer. always run the OS roughly contemporary to the year the machine was made, constantly downloading new bloatware OS updates is a trap that slows down your machine and makes you think you need a new one

Milton Parker, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

This is why I never updated. If I'm going to update, it's to get nicer mic pres or d/a converter. I don't even use plug ins.

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

ignoring my friends talking about problems with updating / what things broke in OSX this time.

Not to be fanboyish but updates may have broken stuff once for me.

I spent last night bouncing the session into AIFFs and then imported into Audacity.
I ran out of time before figuring out how to shuffle the four parts together. Audacity's not like protools where you can just slap things together. I'll figure it out tonight and post by tomorrow morning, hopefully.

Are you comfortable on the commandline? I'd just use SOX so the gui don't slow it down.

Time Machine, July 15, 2006
Reviewer: David E. Hill "Malice N Blunderland" - See all my reviews

I myself bult a time machine from a card board box. Right now I can only get it to go 1/4 of an hour into the future. I am still working out some of the bugs. It right now takes 15 minuets for it to do the time jump.
