found a really nice clean copy of *Nirvana Symphonie* by *Toshiro Mayuzumi at the dump yesterday. On Mainstream. Mainstream's Contemporary Sound Series put out some great stuff in the 60's. Nono, Berio, Stockhausen, Bussotti, Cage, etc

anyway, i've never heard this and it's great stuff. Very deep and moody and ritualistic. he was inspired by Varese and Buddhist monks when creating this. the chanting of sutras behind the instruments is inspired. Toshiro did the music for my fave stoner flick *Tokyo Olympiad*. Awesome *Yoko Ono* cover-art for you Yoko completists.

i'm only gonna listen to stuff that i've never listened to today. so far:

L.A. Express - Shadow Play (Victor Feldman's Joni Mitchell-backing Steely Dan-ish L.A. fusion group)

Thelma Houston - Any Way You Like It (title-track is dope!)

*Nirvana Symphonie* by *Toshiro Mayuzumi

this rules. the chanted vocals are amazing. Mayuzumi helped found Japan's first electronic music studio & there's a lot of great overtone / pre-spectral acoustic synthesis work. I have a later German recording, I usually see copies of the Yoko cover go for $30+ 'round here

Milton Parker, Monday, 2 April 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

it's weird that my copy is on mainstream cuz all the pictures i saw on the web are copies on the TIME label. i saw an old ebay listing where it went unsold for 7 bucks. that's a steal. it's not that common. maybe he's just not in vogue.

scott seward, Monday, 2 April 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

the TIME and mainstream covers are exactly the same though. Even the label placement is the same. i don't remember whether time owned mainstream or the other way around. but it was one or the other.

scott seward, Monday, 2 April 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

soooper rts 9 ... sounds just right right now!!!

bb, Monday, 2 April 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

so what did you think of rosebud? was that you who made me dig it out and listen to it after years and years? it was better than i remembered, but still...

i think you would dig that first aztec two step album that yester produced. there is some good stuff on it. and it should set you back a buck.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

rosebud's pretty good, i think. i like the country rock jams. there are definitely some great tracks. i don't think it's any patchier than Aldeberan, really. but maybe i just haven't spent enough time with that record--i know so many people who fucking love it.

i will look into aztec two step LPs.

manowar gods of war...i dont think ill be hanging out wit this too long?

scott, whats yr feeling on manowar? we had their old PA in the music dorm at college...it was kinda fried, but lent an amuzing edge to the shows we used to put on ... nothing like using manowar's pa for a ida/secret stars/beekeeper show...made more sense for strongballs and other upstate hardcore nonsense

bb, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

i like old ross the boss-era manowar. the original 80's stuff. fun, funny, ross ruled. other than that, yeah, um, i'm glad the good people of germany are happy. we all know what happens when they aren't happy.

i had to give up on this new one...just too...too much.

now im onto this afghan whigs retrospective. its been a while since ive heard them and a long while since ive heard some of the early material. its interesting, now, to hear the hmm...doubt? or...youth? in greg duli's voice. you get so used to that gentleman and after bravado, that you forget the kid was once a human kid.. nostaligic, trip, and this more recent stuff is pretty lackluster, but these guys had something going for em once upon a time... anyway ... gonna switch over to p. lerioux or some spectralist something in a bit, gotta focus for a bit

Dominique, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

listening to rosebud again, and i gotta say the way the album begins... would have been better off without the whole faux-lounge/piano bar schtick, but maybe it sounded better at the time. the whole center of the first side is great! la soleil/reno/western wisconsin. reno may have a few choruses too many, but it's still a rad jam. and i can definitely see some people not liking western wisconsin--maybe it's a little too labored in its "heartfelt" thing, and the lyrics are kind of wtf ridiculous, but i like it.

ian, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

the banjo jams on side 2 also hit me in the proper places.

black and whites single on douchemaster, "you're the only one" is the best song of the year. it surpasses the gentleman jesse single, something i didn't think possible.

the gizmos 1976/1977 lp. seriously retarded, seriously good.

tina and the total babes "she's so tuff" lp. still buzzing about their set a week later. i saw top ten again last night and they were better than they were in new york but still nowhere near as good as tina and the total babes. but the guitar player for top ten... really good. like marc bolan good.

heard it haven't bought it yet. drummer will be in town in june i think playing with c0c0coma and turpentine bros. they are supremely nice guys and put on a great show. they gave me a ride to a bbq last memorial day, it was an interesting ride. only two of them speak any english so i'm guessing ysael was saying this for our benefit but in his thick french canadian accent he'd say "uhhhh, i am theenkeen of changeeng the name of the band to ysael pepin's demon's clause. this is ok with you, yes?"

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

i listened to the b side of "black vinyl shoes" about 40 times last night. wow that's good. what the hell was going on in chicago's northern 'burbs in the mid 70s that it was spitting out bands like shoes and cheap trick and all these insanely good pop songs?

chicago kevin, Monday, 16 April 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

from trouser press:

The brilliant quintessence of American power pop hails from Zion, Illinois and began by recording at home on a 4-track, which resulted in a self-released LP that attracted national attention and (eventually) a major-label contract. Bassist John Murphy, guitarists Jeff Murphy and Gary Klebe and drummer Skip Meyer blend electric guitar — loud, distorted and multi-tracked, yet sweet — with breathy, winsome vocals to create melodic rock made most impressive by the strength of three equally talented singer/songwriters.

Made long before software drastically eased the virtual studio process, the intricately layered guitars and vocals of Black Vinyl Shoes make it hard to believe that it was recorded in a living room. The songs, telling tender tales of failed romance, are catchy and instantly likable. The band also put the record in an impressive package and distributed it as a vinyl demo; in fact, it's one of the finest home-brewed releases ever, and is a much more valid piece of music than many productions by well-known bands with far greater technical resources. After the small initial pressing sold out, the album was licensed to PVC and reissued with wholly different artwork.

Jax --yeah Noah Howard is great! He gets fairly skronky though .. I can't recall if you like that kind of stuff or not. "The Black Ark" is one of the most killinist albums ever. He did a couple earlier ones on ESP. I don't know that album you mentioned at all, and I thought I knew most of his stuff.

He disappeared for a while then made a "comeback" of sorts.. I was at the show on this CD -

been listening to this

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/75/Mastersofreality_cover_mastersofreality1988.jpg/200px-Mastersofreality_cover_mastersofreality1988.jpg

on beautiful Def American vinyl

as opposed to this

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd900/d906/d90686krp5x.jpg

"Doraldina's Prophecies" is a great track but i could never get with the different running order.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

the Def American cover is way better too

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

He gets fairly skronky though .. I can't recall if you like that kind of stuff or not.

i go through phases. i definitely have a lot of free albums (and went through a euro free phase), but usually stick to stuff that has a mix of free and spiritual. impulse/strata east type stuff. from what i read he went into a sorta jazz funk thing in the late 70s. i think the album had african song titles, so that's always a good sign. it was cheap, but i already had a handful of records, so i put it back. i should go see if it's still there.

thanks jaxon. i dunno if you'd be interested or not a lot of it is really hit or miss for me, either it's the best stuff on earth (the shoes "black vinyl shoes") or it makes me want to stick metal skewers in my ears (the raspberries, i can't stand eric carmen's voice). but any genre that can stake a claim on nick lowe can't be bad. then again i'm a sucker for pop songs.

and hey ian! did mike ship those hubble bubble records yet??? and do you guys have anymore of the speedies records? i'm going to try to re-buy the records i lost in new york with this paycheck.

anne briggs - sing a song for you

i pre-ordered hubble bubble so i just need to know to be on the look out. apparently shattered shipped my black & whites 7" but it never showed up. my mailman has a habit of leaving packages on the front stoop if it won't fit in the mail slot.

i need to re-buy speedies, the go! lp, fevers lp, and whatever the name of that bubble gum 7" was that i got at the fest. billisa bought one too so i might just burn it to my itunes.

oh, shit, i got that from them last year at the blackout, it's good. mine came on blue/black marbled vinyl, really nice looking record. i liked the b side more than the a, bill thinks i'm insane for that.

the haunted george record was also on that marbled vinyl but it was green/black, i'm not sure how the hell they do that. it's not so much marbled as it is swirled i guess. anyway, yeah, live in spring branch is good. alex cuervo did the cover art.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

colored vinyl is so funny. yesterday me and mike sniper argued over who got the red vinyl copy of an unholy swill single.

ian, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

eh, the only thing it's good for is collectors, it costs more to produce and the sound quality isn't as good as black vinyl. i don't really care what the vinyl is like. the only thing i really, really do not like is the clear vinyl. it's impossible to see the track grooves on that shit. the marked men lp i have is like that and it's really frustrating because you can see the grooves for BOTH sides of the record.

yes but it took 2 or 3 times. material = obv standards & no drums so you might get bored. it's useful eye-opening AM music (semi-ambient)

that's good shit. you have good taste.

aww, that's so nice of you. i think i have good taste by virtue of being jewish.

i kinda splurged at A1 after lunch today and got:
-richard & linda thompson "pour down like silver" (NM UK press)
-archie shepp - coral rock
-cecil taylor - unit structures
-pentangle - basket of light

the shepp & taylor both have a few light marks on em but seemed to play okay when i checked at the listening stations. those were actually cheaper than the UK folk rock records! A1 is weird. at least i stopped myself from buying the david ackles LP. and another cecil taylor record. and two way overpriced folk legacy LPs (even tho i am trying to collect the entire folk legacy catalog.)

That Ego Trip CD is killer for Lord Shafiyq...I did a late 80s hip hop playlist for Viva-Radio and called it "My Mic is On Fire" Best lyrics ever...

[LS] It's me, Lord Shafiyq, may I enter?
[RL] And Khaliyl ?? ?? - in other words, what do you want?
[LS] Set this mic on fire
[RL] And how you gon' do dat?
[LS] FLAME ON!!

[Verse One]
It's no coincidence, that when I came on
and spoke into my mic dome, I said "FLAME ON!!"
An arsonist calls this a wish
but his name is great, dope, triumphant - he can't hold this
He went to war with the Hammer of Thor
Now it's a monument, hangin on my wall
But you insist to shoot joints - to prove a point
but it's nothin new - because the joint's that you threw
(that you threw) I knew was sweet
It's like an episode, it repeats and repeats
You threw a jab I grab your wrist *SMAK* kiss your fist
Threw it back in your face; mmmm, a total diss
but you're still engaged to what I put on page
Now my mic wants a divorce - it's on a rampage
Singing a lullaby that's so fly
removes the ring around your finger, place it around your eye
Command my mic to play dead, until a knucklehead angers me;
so instead, I'm gettin trife like a mortal with a ginsu knife
I'd rather bring my mic to life - my mic is on FIRE!

[Verse Two]
If I was a porkchop, I'll commit suicide
Purposefully jump into the skillet, to get fried in lard
.. and let you chew on me hard
Then watch you choke from the dope for not bein the God
I won't assist you, or miss you; instead I'll diss you
I grab you by your forlocks and then I'll twist you up
like a pretzel, seasoned with sodium -
- which is salt, who wants to bite now show me them
and I'll roast 'em, toast 'em, post 'em where the sea dwells
Down the Pacific, where Sally sells seashells
by the seashore - and if you want more then just ASK
You shall be given the cure
You're not dealing with a dealer or dealing with a concealer
You're dealing with a revealer - Shafiyq is a healer
I am the antidote, and I'm dope, and I'm anti-wack;
which is to say being wack, is what I lack
I'm so dangerous so please don't anger this
microphone, he'll tell me to untangle his wire
Plug it in, to fulfill his desire
?? set his ass on fire - my mic is on FIRE!

"Oh my God!"

[Verse Three]
Yes, so weren't you callin my name
or am I buggin - are my ears playin games?
There's no time to snicker, I came to flicker
a light dormented in you, and the quicker
you acknowledge - inhale {*aaahhhh*}, exhale {*hahhhh*}
Bear witness - Allahu Akbar
adhered to my call, and entered the door
then do what's right and exact - and hit the floor
Cause my mic is on fire, meaning that it's lit up
until the knowledge stop flowing then you all can get up
and inhale {*aaahhhh*}, and exhale again {*HAHHHH!*}
cause it's a constant ??style that never ends
Knowledge flows through me, my microphone uses me
to illume me, then he becomes on FIRE!

[Verse Four]
I keep droppin science as if I was clumsy
So in tune with the tune that even bums be
boppin to the theme that makes hobos rock
I stop crime - like Robocop
I sport, Bally sandals, ride on camels
Wear Egyptian Musk, cause I hate grey flannel
I hate a man who thinks he's better than I am
because he's bigger than I am, he doesn't know who I am
You said you're built like a house, tough shit - I ain't fearin it
When does a house compare to a pyramid?
That's what I enter when I want to meditate
I light up, a pack of ?? incense, and then I translate
a flow through a pen on a scroll
Then I unrolled the scroll, when it's time to roll
Shafiyq is the Lord, much is under my cap
And like Reynold's, I'm here to +Wrap+ - my mic is on FIRE!

did you see Joakim? I wimped out. too tired.

dmr, Saturday, 28 April 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

my friend Brian made a mix called "Droppin Science As If I Was Clumsy"

dmr, Saturday, 28 April 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I did go to Joakim...it wasn't very crowded, probably due to the last minute switch from Element to Studio B. I thought I'd see a lot more of the heads/DJ/producer types but they mostly weren't there, just a small crowd that seemed to dig things. Nick from the Bangers then Eamon Harkin djd, people started dancing while they pushed Joakim back an hour to start just after 1 instead of midnight. The show was fun, it's always cool to see people attempt stuff like that...and people danced, though there were moments of confusion as to the typical "am I supposed to dance or watch" dilemma. I don't know the whole LP so I don't know what's what, there were a few pretty straight intense techno banger type selections, a well done I Wish You Were Gone, one really cool post-punk disco kind of number. We left before he finished because we didn't feel well and I wanted tacos.

scott seward, Sunday, 29 April 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

today at the dump i got nice free copies of:

poco - pickin' up the pieces (this was the one early poco album i needed a nicer copy of!! god luvvs me.)

gong - shamal (you know, the other gong)

godspell (original theatrical production. this one looks clean. so hard to find clean copies. i've gone thru like ten copies of godspell if you count the movie version too. meaning, i bought them for a quarter thinking they looked okay and they sounded like crap.)

the rhinestones - s/t (now i own two rhinestones albums. probably more than enough. harvey brooks' band.)

adriano celentano - i mali del secolo (??? some italian dude. from 1972. you never know.)

danny o'keefe - o'keefe (score! been loving danny this year. don't have this one. has his big hit on it.)

ralph macdonald - universal rhythm

the wonderful world of antonio carlos jobim (with nelson riddle. nice copy! original stereo pressing.)

come and go with me - traditional and original folk songs sung by sterling lee pierce (custom-pressed record. even autographed. we shall see.)

mystic moods - erogenous

full force - old flames never die 12-inch

the northern pikes - big blue sky (probably horrible. we shall see.)

frankie crocker & the heart and soul orchestra - s/t (he is my chief rocker.)

rasa - everything you see is me (70's krsna stuff. i usually end up liking 70's stuff on Govinda.)

crystal - uncut (promising looking. early 80's florida band. looks like they put this out themselves. "foxy roxy", "funk me", "dogron", "got to get over the hump". we shall see.)

michael parks - closing the gap (the actor. he was on a show about a rebel on a motorcycle called Then Came Bronson. looks kinda folk/countryish. we shall see.)

also at the dump, i got great CDs to trade in at the record store for good stuff. LOVE when that happens. all 90's stuff: black crowes, letters to cleo, portishead, smashing pumpkins, hole, tracy bonham, fuel, weezer, juliana hatfield, toadies. that's like finding free money!

scott seward, Sunday, 29 April 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and ian, who is putting out vinyl mandrake memorial reissues? i could actually use some upgrades. the first two albums were never that pricey for actual copies. puzzle was always the pricey one. my copies are okay, but not minty or anything.

mm aren't for everybody. some people can't handle that harpsichord/organ sound. i have always adored all three albums though. so beautiful to me. when my pal linda cohen introduced me to michael kac from mm years ago i immediately turned into a stuttering sputtering schoolgirl. it was weird!

scorpio does, scott. i think it's only the first couple? should be under $12 from yer local record shop--they must stock scorpio vinyl right? we had a decent copy of puzzle at the store for $75 but i did not buy it. it had a little surface noise in places. the s/t mandrake memorial i got is also pretty beat up, hence it only costing me $2. i should have just gotten a sealed copy of the reissue for $8 but whatevs. i got a free everly brothers greatest hits LP today. and a free copy of Emotional Rescue, WITH the poster! and a free kitty wells LP.

i don't own any linda cohen records anymore; don't tell her. i just never listened to Lake of Light.

but now i am listening to bob mosley.

ian, Monday, 30 April 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

also, which letters to cleo did you get scott? i used to like that band a lot. aurora gorey alice was the jam. me & pete sm1th were talking abt LTC yesterday.

ian, Monday, 30 April 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

do you like the lost & found record scott? it's kind of average psych to me, but the elevators cover is funny and awesome.

ian, Monday, 30 April 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

i also got some free 45s today, let me list them for you:
stone ponys 'i've got to know'/'different drum'
canned heat 'goin up the country' / 'let's work together' (i already have at least two copies of this, but i think this one is in the best shape yet.)
tommy james & shondells 'crimson & clover' / 'sweet cherry wine'
ozark mtn daredevils 'jackie blue' / 'if i only knew'
carly simon 'you're so vain' / 'the right thing to do'
seeds 'pushin too hard' / 'try to understand'
gene vincent 'be-bop-a-lula' / 'lotta lovin'

msp, Monday, 30 April 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

the letters to cleo i got were aurora gory alice and wholesale meats and fish. i was gonna listen to them cuz i liked the vocals on that josie and the pussycats soundtrack that the letters woman did. i might listen to hole too. i'm a big fan of live through this.

i wasn't a huge fan of their big hit here and now though. but i shouldn't judge them on that. i learned that with my after-the-fact veruca salt fandom.

scott seward, Monday, 30 April 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

"i don't own any linda cohen records anymore; don't tell her."

i don't either really. it's okay. i haven't actually heard her earliest stuff on poppy. i ownly owned one from later on. i don't see her anymore. she was a neighbor of mine in philly. she's really cool. she gives guitar lessons at the guitar shop. and she plays live a lot. she was the original drummer in the great philly psych band Elizabeth. but she left cuz she wanted to move to england. they put out one really good album on Vanguard after she left.

This Saturday, el Cinco de Mayo, at The Creek and the Cave in Long Island City, Queens:

Grave Blankets- from Columbus, OH lay on a thick and sludgy hate fueled wall of overamplified distortion- Cheater Slicks fans take note!
http://www.myspace.com/graveblankets

Red Rockets- are a self-described "good for nothin no 'count rock'n'roll band from nowhere," (aka Provo, UT???) playing a half-step above total ineptitude.
http://www.myspace.com/goredrocket

Small cover charge, killer venue with Mexican food (natch!), touring bands with cheap merch & 45's sure sell for high bids on ebay post-tour... What more could you ask for?!?!?!?

Dig the band links above for sounds and The Creek and the Cave link below for directions/ pics/ menu/ etc... oh yeah, the weather is gonna be perfect and they have a swanky patio for future lung cancer victims! PARTY!!!

So my employer just moved buildings and now my iTunes floor-network is a whole bunch of different people than before, and mostly that's awesome because I can listen to the Russian Futurists, the Mo-Dettes, Nick Gilder, etc, off their lists, but the indie/hipster overlap between the other six people on here is RIDIC: if I have to scroll through another playlist made up of the Arcade Fire, the Killers, the Futureheads (who are the Futureheads??), Iron & Wine, and every Elephant Six project, I might go and find these people on my floor and see whether they are actually ONE BEING.
