Sat 6/16 - Television, Apples in Stereo, Dragons of Zynth - CENTRAL PARK SUMMERSTAGE

whoa whoa whoa.... waht??!?!?

i saw television a number of years ago (so long ago that i think hstencil watched the show from the balcony with towga while i was on the floor) and they were still pretty awesome. good thing about guys with lousy voices, you can't lose what you never had.

hmmmmm, time to check to see how many airline miles i have left.

chicago kevin, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I went to the Television reunion show in '92 (?), which was one of the first I attended with lots of gray heads in the audience.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

daaaamn

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

stop jizzing yerselves about television & think about roky.

have i told you guys how i embarrassed myself in front of tom verlaine once?

ian, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

why do i live in chicago again?

chicago kevin, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

ian, i do not know the story of how you embarrassed yourself in front of tom veraline once so please share.

chicago kevin, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'll be in CA for the Roky show, so sadly. Putting most of those on my calendar tho.

Laurel, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

it's not a very interesting story. he was in the store, and i thought he was way in the back so i turned around to joke to my co-workers that we oughtta show him all of our unsold copies of adventure, but he had crept up behind me and i be like daaaamn.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

m coleman, Monday, 9 April 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

In Ventura, Morbs, with whole family, for my bro's graduation from film school. My first time west of the Rockies!

Laurel, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

television were great when i saw them. so many grey pontails in the audience... my friend and i decided that vodka and ensure should have been the drink special.

lauren, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

vodka & ensure to wash down the viagra

m coleman, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

lots of long haired greytops when i saw them too. my favorite was the guy who was obviously under the influence of some sort of psychadelic who was doing interpretive dances to all the songs. he also threw his head back and howled like a wolf during venus de milo.

that was when i left the floor.

chicago kevin, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

those dudes probably booed televison when they toured w/pete gabriel in 78. fuckin hippies.

m coleman, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

I will go see animal collective and battles for sure, seaport is like blocks from my work

I've had bad luck with castle clinton shows, their ticketing system is lame

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

seeing how all the random tourists on the pier react to AC will be a show in itself

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I am so coming up to see Roky.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I bet the tourists will be converted by Danielson, tho (as I would be, before fleeing from AC)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

lauren, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

In the meantime, New Yorkers can catch Sonic Youth members Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, and Jim O'Rourke at the No Fun Fest in Brooklyn in May (don't expect anything like Sonic Youth though!).

gabbneb, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

B-52s at Asser Levy 8/9? (their page says 8/10/07, but 8/10 is last year's date. Pollstar says 8/9)

gabbneb, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

that's last year's schedule for the Asser Levy series, unless they are making a return. Theye usu don't announce til June.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Asser Levy hasn't updated its own schedule yet, but both B-52s themselves and Pollstar say there is an '07 date, and Pollstar says it's a different date from last year

gabbneb, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

i.e., it looks like they're making a return (weren't they rained out last year?)

I get kinda grossed out when I think about the young'uns running around Southpaw on a Sunday afternoon for Baby Loves Disco or those Dan Zanes matinee shows. I'd be like "Timmy don't touch that floor! This place smeels like stale beer and pee!"

sanskrit, Friday, 18 May 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

but yeah that prospect park schedule gets progressively lamer each year. not even any good cinema + live music pairings this go round.

you can't see it so well online, but i was transfixed by the poster last weekend. ravi coltrane's face is exactly his father's from the nose down, and his mother's from above.

So if any1 is serious about Television, for 'name' acts it's best to line up no later than 2:30 (better 2:15) at the Summerstage gate. If you want to sit (I do, pref in the bleachers). When it gets full (Sonic Youth) they've stopped letting people enter in the past.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Justin from Native Nod and We Acediasts, old NJ punk compatriot of Mr.'s Murphy and Simonetti. We Acediasts was his band in Japan, James Murphy produced, really really cool stuff. ICP is him and another musician doing like, electro-acoustic minimal "dance" music of sorts. Only heard myspace so far.

A friend involved w/ PS1 booking this summer told me they were trying to have more experimental and live music, as it's an "art" space that should have such things, and not just pumping house music for yuppies with kids on their shoulders. Funny that Eliot Sharp's on the bill with Glass Candy.

dmr, Sunday, 17 June 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Apples in Stereo got rained on, or rather the audience did. Then cleared, and we learned Richard Lloyd was in hospital. Show was pretty OK w/sub. I found my friend Ray.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 17 June 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

HEY I WENT TO SEE NOISE BANDS PLAY ACOUSTIC and it was okay! Really liked Aa -- would see again. Roosvlet Island also trippy, and a good 25 or so miles ridden today. A+++ Sunday.

Laurel, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently Junior Mance played last Thursday evening in Bryant Park. Those who work in midtown or are otherwise available should check out his lunchtime gig at the same place end of July, beginning of August.

Dan Zanes should stop all this nonsense and get a haircut.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

my local has a poster for the free shows in central park in the mens room which is odd considering we're a thousand miles away. i got psyched when i saw that television would be playing here. until i read more and realized they would not be playing here.

you better stop. and think it over. think it over again.

chicago kevin, Monday, 18 June 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 18 June 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

haha spotted zanes at the whitney museum summer o'love exhibit awhile back, wandering around w/that doofus haircut, trying to get noticed. his music is for "hipster parents"? anyway my kid didn't like it.

Grateful Dead "Dark Star >> St. Stephen >> Not Fade Away >> Going Down The Road Feelin' Bad >> Not Fade Away" from Filmore East, NYC April 1971
File Under: jams

Caught Belgrade Chimney dropping the funkiest Eastern European styles last night with some support by fellow chims Space and Captain. Ended up at a 4am rub n tug dj set at a mostly empty church in the East Village. As Belgrade put it, just a "typical tuesday night" in NYC.

This 30 minute suite was recorded at the Fillmore East over 35 years earlier about 3 blocks down from the church.

Somehow got to talking to Belgrade about the Dead so these jams go out to him on this 4th of July.

CITY PARKS FOUNDATION PRESENTS GLOBAL FAMILY DAY WITH HIP HOP HARRY FOR FREE AT
SUMMERSTAGE ON SUNDAY, JULY 15TH, 2007

WHO: Hip Hop Harry
Sippy Cups
Break! The Urban Funk Spectacular

WHAT:      Get ready to rock it pre-schoolers at SummerStage’s Global Family Day 2007, with the wild beats and kid-friendly flow of Hip-Hop Harry. A six-foot tall yellow bear in a Kangol cap, Harry is kind of a funkier version of Barney—if Barney had lived in the South Bronx in the ‘80s. Nominated for Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Series by the Daytime Emmys, the show is a staple of Discovery Kids and TLC networks. A typical live Hip-Hop Harry show is a joyous mix of break-dancing, educational lyrics and musical adventure.

Described by the LA Times as “the Flaming Lips of the toddler set,” The Sippy Cups bring to kids’ music such hipster-certified influences as the Velvet Underground, T. Rex, The Beatles and Syd Barrett. Most of the six members of group played in indie rock bands before having kids, so they understand the importance of getting the grown-ups involved. The Cups make the kind of glorious din that will induce parents to stomp and bomp along with their children.

BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular is a mind-blowing trip through the history of break dancing, with the most amazing poppin’, lockin’, head-spinning and power-tumbling you’re ever likely to see. The dancers are some of the finest New York has to offer, veterans of old-school “battles” who use their skills and athleticism to bring break dancing to stages across the world.

WHEN:     Sunday, July 15th, 3:00 PM

WHERE:   Rumsey Playfield, Central Park SummerStage.  Enter the park at 69th Street and Fifth Avenue on the east side or at 72nd Street and Central Park West on the west side.

VIP Diamondbags awake thyselves--

Zune is presenting the "Live @ The BBQ" concert series and you are
invited to attend this exclusive event.

We created "Zune - Live at the BBQ", to give back to our cultural core
consumer. For us, it's about connecting with that core and giving them
the opportunity to participate in the Zune mantra which is to support
Art, Music and Film in the digital space. This Show is a reward to those
who have come to support the digital platform. It's also a thank you t
those individuals in the city who have come to support the local and
national Art, Music and Film community. We'll do that by bringing music
back to the community parks. It's a nod to a time when this music was
about community; community support and community interaction. We want to
recreate that energy with the ultimate park jam experience and we want
you to be there.

You will be treated to an all day event with special performances by:

Brand Nubian, Cham, Large Professor, Clipse, MIMS, Joell Ortiz and many
more special guests.

This special event takes place on Saturday 8.04.07. The location of the
event is a secret and you will be notified of the specific location when
you receive your ticket 72 hours before the show. Time of event is 3 to
10pm.

You will receive a bar-coded ticket in your email which you have to
print out and present at the event for entry.

Visit www.zuneliveatthebbq.net to register (while supplies last).

Is Battles an RSVP type affair?

nah Pier 17 is a pretty wide-open area, you just walk up and hang out. there's no "entry point" per se. I will probably go to that show after work.

I've seen bands arguably more popular than Battles at the seaport and it wasn't that crowded (Hot Chip last year, for one)

Yerac -- I totally meant to go see Black Moth Super Rainbow at yer bar on Saturday but forgot :(

dmr, Thursday, 23 August 2007 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

Morbs, I can't commit, I'm afraid -- I'm sorry to be lame but I have an early Sat departure to report for and costume woes to deal with before then. Wd like to catch CO but don't hold me to it.

sanskrit, Thursday, 6 September 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

The problem is that I don't think I like any of those bands...? And also that I will be on Long Island dressed like a medieval pumpkin.

Laurel, Thursday, 6 September 2007 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

That sounds like an awesome excuse, if the Yahoo Image Search for medieval pumpkin is any indication.

Laurel, Monday, 10 September 2007 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

Pix?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

As soon as I have them, which is Not Yet.

Laurel, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

Saw Silver Apples and Moon Upstairs in Chicago over the weekend.
Moon Upstairs was SO BAD and Simeon was VERY DEPRESSING.

Just fyi.

Trip Maker, Monday, 10 September 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i was just thinking no way i will go out to Ridgewood, Queens to punkkeee performance space that might get shutdown for all i know. i guess knitten factory is my only other option. also that night doesn't conflict with an ethiopian band i want to see.

sanskrit, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

trip maker, does Simoen just use a modern day synthesizer now or does he lug around all the old chunky gear?

sanskrit, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

he was still using "the simeon" last time i saw them, but i don't know about this tour.

bell_labs, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

linds what was your band called when you opened for him? or tell me next time you see me if you don't want to post.

sanskrit, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

now I may have changed my mind about going :/

dmr, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

Simeon does not use the Simeon anymore. He basically plays one theremin along with pre-recorded tracks. The drums all sound weak. He can only use one hand, or something. It was sad :(

Trip Maker, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

i was in a band called "creme blush" yes awful name, i know, i did not make that up. they had a second electroclash incarnation with just the lead singer and a different keyboardist but when i was with them it was 4 girls...it was 2001 or 2002 at the cooler

bell_labs, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

we couldn't have been worse than the ex-models, anyways

bell_labs, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

ive never seen silent barn even be in danger of getting shut down fwiw
but it is kinda far :/

sleep, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Creme Blush many times but not when you were in the band I don't think. Nicole was her name right? Her and an asian woman.

dan selzer, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

yes, nicole and satsuki. they made it into the vice guide to electroclash but that was after my time, lol

bell_labs, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

Simeon does not use the Simeon anymore. He basically plays one theremin along with pre-recorded tracks. The drums all sound weak. He can only use one hand, or something. It was sad :(

ugh, bummerz. thx for the warning.

so anyway .... blues control friday?

dmr, Monday, 10 September 2007 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

MORBS YOU KID BUT WE ACTUALLY HAD TO DO THE MAYPOLE WEAVING EACH AFTERNOON AND TANGLE THE "GREEN MEN" IN OUR WEB. Believe me, the announcer didn't let any historical or pseudo-historical aspect of that tradition go unmentioned.

Laurel, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

LOL i was totally thinking maypole when i saw that pic but didnt want to ask
