this sounds awesome!

tehresa, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

as far as TX psych goes I dig the Golden Dawn record a little bit better than the Lost & Found record -- too much Elevators worship on the latter (certainly not a *bad* thing in itself), while the Dawn sounds pretty sui generis and creepily shattered, almost like a poppier Mad River.

Jerry Hunt - Lattice
Howling Hex - All Night Fox
Outkast - ATLiens
Harry Miller - Children at Play

i listened to "moments in love" from one of the early art of noise singles, "seven seas of rhye" from queen ii (i know some of you like that, but i think that song's the only reason i've kept that record) and "love's lines, angles, and rhymes" by the fifth dimension.

you know...i think its really only the drums that throw me off this breed of metal. i dig this, but the fact that the drumms sound like a skipping cd is merely distracting...why do these bands do this?...it's not even quite mechanical (and theus effective in an evocative sense) and, to my body/ears, negates the point of having drums at all.

what are your top 10 recent metal releases that are available on vinyl?
too much metal seems to be CD only :(

ian, Sunday, 6 May 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

well, i mean, you can get lots of stuff on vinyl via mail-order, you know? but most of the stuff i get is promo stuff on CD. i buy whatever metal vinyl they have at the record store here, but that's mostly reissue stuff and southern lord stuff. which is fine, cuz southern lord puts lots of great stuff out on vinyl. if you told me the stuff your store has, i could tell you what i liked.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

Bonnie Dobson " Good Morning Rain" - funky folk

Goblin "Zombie (Dawn of the Dead)" original

Atmospheres ft. Clive Stevens " Voyage To Uranus" funky electro-jazz album. Sounds sort of On the Corner-ish. Before steven's cosmic period.

Inner City Express - Dance and Shake your Tambourine 12"

Kebekelektrik - s/t

Nina Hagen "Unbehagen" - with African Reggae

NYC Peech Boys - Come on, Come on (Don't Say Maybe) 12"

Some KPM library record by Andy Clark from 84. Pretty italo/cosmic sounding, but it might also be really, really cheesy. But it was only $3, so whatevs. How come all the stores in NY and London have actual Library sections, but in SF the only store that carries them is Groove Merchant and they're always $30+ ?

Les Rockets - On the Road Again LP

Duke Edwards & The Young Ones "Is It Too Late?" - amazing avant-soul, free jazz, spiritual spoken word thing I bought on an impulse because ian was playing it in the store. btw, thanks again for such a fat hookup. i didnt' even realize it until after i left the store. and that sandwich store/deli you suggested was really good.

Some Yoko Ono 12" w/2 remixes of her songs from the early 80s.

jaxon, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

man, the only Bonnie Dobson I have is really nice trad folk. on Prestige Folklore. I wonder what she'd sound like with a studio band. YSI?

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

i'll prolly try to rip it eventually. there were a buncha guys at Sound Library that were all talking about the reissues they were gonna put out and one of them bought the other dobson record and was kinda mad at me for finding this one.

jaxon, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Let It Happen" off Earth. I put it on my blog a few months ago then realized it had already been making the rounds. Then it was on 20jazzfunkgreats a while ago. Then the Riton mix. Now Lindstrom covered it and it's on that Lindstrom essential mix. Which I was listening to when I wrote that comment .... sorry for being vague

invisbl skratch piklz vs da klamz uv deth

LOTS of Buffalo (i'm reviewing the five Buffalo reissues on Aztec Records)

That awesome czech psych reissue by The Blue Effect

great new album by suicidal black metal band SHINING

group doueh - guitar music from the western sahara

babe ruth - stealin' home

electronic music from the university of illinois (60's album on heliodor. brun/gaburo/hamm/hiller/martirano. great avant noise moments.)

betsy rutherford - traditional country music (ian's new favorite record)

song - album (maybe my favorite album of the year. it has it ALL. i put one track on that 70's ilm mix i made. unheralded curt boettcher creation that smokes and rocks and power pops. it does it ALL.)

pilot - s/t (not great. every couple of years i drag it out cuzza my undying love for leigh stevens.)

the best of juicy lucy

mayhem - wolf's lair abyss

the unspoken word - s/t (second and final album on atco. not nearly as good as the genius debut on ascot, but still worth a spin. more bloozerock and pop/rock.)

seatrain - the marblehead messenger

nives - s/t (italian protest folk chick on mgm)

fairport convention - a moveable feast

st.louis blues 1929-1935 - the depression (yazoo)

biff rose - children of light

tar - jackson

dmx krew - we are dmx

pain teens - stimulation festival

mcguinness flint - s/t

wishbone ash - pilgrimage

rosalie sorrels - what ever happened to the girl that was

gruppo sportivo - 10 mistakes

squirrel bait - skag heaven

lsd march - empty rubious red

milton nascimento - clube da esquina 2

god bullies - mamawombwomb

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

i want more rosalie sorrels records. i only have that one on folk legacy.
and i am a big fan of that mcguinness flint record! "lazy day" is such the jam.

i had NO IDEA there were five buffalo records. are they all awesome like volcanic rock?

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

and what is the definition of "suicidal black metal"?? is it actually a pro-euthanasia sub-genre of black metal?

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

it's way bleak. there are sound-bites of people crying. nice acoustic guitar and piano action. kind of a combo of funeral doom and black metal. SHINING's black metal ain't that fierce, but they have a great doomed vibe.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

the first three Buffalo albums are awesome. Dead Forever..., Volcanic Rock, and Only Want You For Your Body. After those, the label made them fire their genius guitarist and they went more commercial for two more albums. still kinda cool and weird hard rock with lots of slide guitar though.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

i have two mcguinness flint albums. the s/t and happy birthday, ruthy baby. i like them both okay.

right now i'm listening to Mason Proffit's Movin' Toward Happiness. I dig them too. I have three of their albums, i think.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

buy ANY rosalie albums you see. they are all great. she is just friggin' great.

and you need Jean Ritchie's None But One album too. hell, all Jean Ritchie albums. they don't sell for much.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

When I found a copy of Only Want You For Your Body, I was so disappointed because it such a drop-off from Volcanic Rock. It's got a few really good tracks but man the magic was gone. I never bothered picking up Average Rock & Roller and MOther's Choice (I think those are the titles?), which is weird because they are probably at least decent and lord knows I will pick up any album by any bunch of loud lunkheads from the 70s. I guess cuz Volcanic Rock has long been one of my all-time fave albums I don't want to diminish the band in my mind by learning that they ended up sucking.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

hey do we have a dedicated eBay thread on pickle bar? I can't remember and that search function totally blows. Anyway, I enjoyed voyeuristically watching this one end today:

Stormy Davis, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

it's not really the same band by the end. but the last two albums have their moments. i like only want you for your body! come on. dune messiah! kings cross ladies! the guitars are still ruling. no, not as godly as what came before, but still...

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

i want to listen to buffalo now, but i don't think my neighbors want me to listen to it at the volume required. tomorrow, though. i'm listening to poco instead. for you, scott.

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

i still get a kick out of the four dollar media mail for yer 2 grand rarity. i was skulking on ebay tonight. i have no money, so it just hurts.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

can we make POCO the watchword in brooklyn for 2007, ian?

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

now playing:

masters of reality - s/t

this will be, oh, the 4598th time that i have played this album. i couldn't choose between this album and done by the forces of nature on one of those dopey ilm polls, so i didn't vote for anything.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

I am kind of getting into searching for record lots of easy to find classic rock stuff. Because honestly even the dollar bins around here have been sucking lately. I bid on a lot of 3 late period Nazareth records today but I got outbid at $2. But last week I won 7 Bonnie Raitt lps for 4 bucks (10 bucks shipping but whatevs.)

man, I overdosed on that Masters of Reality album a couple weeks ago. it felt great to reacquaint myself.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

man, that oliver record looks pretty cool.
have you guys heard it? and there's a reissue? i'll have to look for that.

you oughta get a kick out of this scott: someone I think you know put up their GBV Propeller original:

then it appears that after seeing the final price, the Laxster decided he could part with his copy as well:

Stormy Davis, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

I have been kind of feeling the resurgence of GBV love since Ian started posting about them. I am going to pull out those records soon.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

i sold all my gbv vinyl on ebay when i saw what it was selling for! i mean, even matador stuff going for 20 or 30 bucks, i couldn't resist.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

i wasn't really listening to any of it. i got no hate for gbv. the only thing i have left on vinyl is do the collapse!

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

i got mean e-mails from gerard when i wrote my do the collapse review. cuz i didn't have my "facts" straight. like i have facts.

scott seward, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

i wish i had propeller on vinyl. i don't even have the repress. just a CD!
i'd also like a copy of vampire on titus on LP, just in case anyone has a spare layin around.

ugh, how did i miss this? yes, fucking love them. what did you hear ian? the new stuff isn't like the s/t lp on criminal iq or the 7" on goodbye boozy. newer stuff is way more psych, like using the best parts of jefferson airplane as spice in mc5 sauce.

i'm fucking hungry.

listen son, i know you're mother was just trying to protect you and all, and i don't deny i made some mistakes. ok, a lot of mistakes. but really, under the circumstances, i did what i thought was for the best

i've followed your progress from afar and i have to say, son, i'm really proud of you. i always wanted to step back in, and try be a real father to you again, but somehow the time never seemed right, and you seemed to be doing real well, at school, and now with your own little one on the way.

but here we are now, i think its the right time, what do you say son?

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

well, your mother and i agreed not to tell you the truth, we didn't think you could handle it. honestly, it really did seem the best thing to do, though i know it must look pretty cruel to you right now.

i'll be able to tell you the whole story, but, i cant come back because of what happened. if you want to know everything, you're going to have to catch a flight out here to port-au-prince. its cheap here, and i have a feeling you're gonna love the food.

last night was at a bar and a guy that was the spitting image of John Locke from Lost with a lollypop in his mouth was playing really good records (all 7"s). he played Paul McCartney's "Check My Machine". i didnt' realize it had ever had an actual release (just thought it was extras on the cd reissue of II). apparently it was the b-side of Waterfalls, which is like the boringest song on that album (pretty, but still). surprised they made that a single. then noticed there was a 7" for Coming Up that has "Coming Up (Live At Glasgow)" & "Lunch Box / Odd Sox". anyone have those on mp3?

i don't have TONS of his work (like maybe 3-5 albums), but that was my first and i still consider it one of his defining works

jaxon, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

is that the best place to start w/glass? i never know what to get...i've almost bought glassworks a couple times (for the it's always cheap reason)

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

glass is boooooooooring

69, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

'glassworks' was his first nicely produced big seller in 81, lush strings & horns and he mostly ditched the crazy math time-signatures for straight up 4/4 arpeggios -- it's pretty good but it's also kind of the first one that sounds like all the boring later ones, you've heard that record in 10,000 life insurance commercials

trance weird glass that sounds like it was recorded in a garage = 'einstein' / 'north star' / 'music in 12 parts' I still listen to those

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

i like to listen to philip glass while playing katamari damacy but otherwise don't have much use for him.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

i sold all my glass except for einstein. i had the other operas and northstar. i was gonna buy music in 12 parts last time i saw it (the LP of some of it, anyway) but some baldhead got it before me.

ian, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

glassworks is good. buncha short pieces & a linked suite of "dances" more melodic than trance percussive, nice piano clumps. "pop" glass not epic work like einstein on the beach.

m coleman, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

aw, i like glass

river wolf, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

right now i am listening to crazy fucking landlady's son - IN THE FUCKING SHED, BRO

river wolf, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

glass's "koyaanisqatsi" has some stuff i liked. the bass singing and the organs go well on the title track. it's a good one to blast. (of course, a lot of music sounds better loud.)

the duller parts are pretty standard sorta stuff. scory stuff vs. wonderment vs. empty "i coulda composed this and glass coulda taken the day off."

although, "the grid" would make one hell of a guitar god type song... one long noodle solo and then operatic chorus... hobeniam rhapsodeez cocky nuts. seriously, i'd love to see somebody take this song and mash it with angus playing thunderstruck. it would totally work. it's such metal. (21 minutes of blessed fuckin metal.)

listening to it now... need to pull out some tom recchion next.

in the red delivered today:

mark sultan - the sultanic verses. not much new territory covered here, a good record but very similar to previous bbq output.
jay reatard - night of broken glass. jay gets WAY pop on this 4 song 12", pretty f'ing good stuff.
cheater slicks - yer last record. there's something about the cheater slicks that makes me want to paradoxically kill myself yet gives me reason to keep living. amazing fucking band, if they haven't got their due by now they probably never will and that's a goddamn shame.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

mishima soundtrack is awesome and good playing anytime!

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

it's been years & years but I actually played mishima a bunch right after I saw the movie. and i thought the glass music really enhanced last year's notes on a scandal but I haven't heard it since the film.

m coleman, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

mark sultan - the sultanic verses. not much new territory covered here, a good record but very similar to previous bbq output.

i think this record is GREAT GREAT GREAT. def a better step fwd than WFD? from s/t KKBBQ - SV sounds like what WFD? should have sounded to me, and less like a step into more normal new garage stuff.

ooh imma have to check out that jay 12"!

the dead c - future artists, operation of the sonne

ian, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

i think this record is GREAT GREAT GREAT. def a better step fwd than WFD? from s/t KKBBQ - SV

yeah but musically the songs sound EXACTLY like the ones on the "complete recordings" lp that came out on sounds of subterania 5 years ago which were vv similar to the ones that came out on the "tie your noose" lp on bomp. and i mean rhythmically, it's the same chords (which i don't mind) but it's THE EXACT SAME rhythm and tempo as previous songs. i'm not saying it's not good and i'm not saying i don't like it. i'm just saying it's not anything vastly different than previous BBQ solo records.

i guess i'm kind of disappointed, when i heard it was going to be a full band setup i was expecting something more along the lines of the stuff he did under the mind controls name where he was backed by the demon's claws.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

ooh imma have to check out that jay 12"!

get it quick, in the red only pressed 500 and they aren't going to repress it. i think jay is using it as his european tour record so he's got at least 200 of them.

purple brain mix is amazing. the weirdest, most obscure shit i've ever heard. everything seamlessly flows together without being beatmatched. most of it isn't even dance music. kinda like ambient beardo beats. i only know one song on the entire thing. that Barry DeVorzon "Riot" (from the RPM soundtrack) track that they put on the 7".

dmr, Thursday, 11 June 2009 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

gbx, I'm maybe not the best person to ask about the archives? I like neil a lot but it's a highly conditional love. whether or not you wanna plunk for it depends on yr opinions in re: a) after the gold rush/harvest, (I'm not a fan of either), b) live neil (hit or miss for me), and c) buffalo springfield/csny (mostly bleah). whether you've already got massey hall or fillmore east is also a factor.

there's probably only a disc or two of stuff I'll go back to long term but am having fun trawling around the archives in a research-minded kind of way. it really does put his first album in a whole new light, the remix/remaster on that is unfreakinbelievable.

however if you're asking just because you feel like you need some permission to mentally justify dropping a benjamin on it, then go ahead, you have my blessings!
