JW, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know what the chicago thread knows. i hang out more at the dc thread than anywhere else. also, ian, did you mail my hubble bubble lp or did mike? i'm just curious as to who the joker was that addressed it to "blood diamonds".

chicago kevin, Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

mike addressed it but i wrote blood diamonds on it :D
also, the powerpop dj night is a semi-regular thing laurel so don't worry abt missing it once.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

If it's cheap...?

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

i really want to try fette sau, but not sure how cheap it is? you can buy meat by the pound, though, and i'm sure it's reasonable if you split it with a bunch of people.....

i'd eat anything though!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I recommend the pulled pork + beef ribs + baked beans

it's not that cheap tho, no

if you go w/ Laurel make sure she orders the beers :D

dmr, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

And by "beers", you mean cocktails, since they don't stock my usual.

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel, maybe you shouldn't be so fussy about beer and music?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

be as fussy as you want, if it pisses someone off it's their problem. but, flip side of that same coin is you might be missing out on things you might like if you always stick to what you know.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

so my advice is either change or don't change i guess is my point.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

O error of my ways! Starting tonight at Blift I will strive for patience and tolerance, taking JW as my inspiration.

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, shut up, I don't LIKE beer, it tastes awful. I drink Bud because it doesn't build up that awful bitterness in the back of my throat over the course of two rounds.

Laurel, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

I see what you did there!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

who's in for the knit monday?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

High lifes are good for grilling hotdogs with friends and enjoying summer.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

it's the champagne of beers man.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

My end of college involved a day swimming in the finger lakes, listening to daft punk, grilling with girls, drinking miller high life and a KEG of bass and then tossing the keg in the lake

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

I realized my main problem with PBR is that beer cans are gross. Almost any beer I've tried is drinkable out of a bottle.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

I like soda better from cans.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

etc.

dmr, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

high life was college beer x a million. we always had a 30 in the fridge, for emergencies

river wolf, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

getting a gallon jug of beer is half (at least) the fun at fette sau. aside from the pork ribs our food was so-so.

lauren, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

otm

dmr, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

pricewise, it matched up for us with blue smoke and smoke joint ie, around $25-30 per head.

lauren, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i forgot about the pig tails. i actually really liked those, but you can't make a meal out of them.

lauren, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

can't get pbr in a bottle out there?

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I have never knowingly drank PBR! =D

Maybe I should try it. Also, I've only tried Budweiser once because I had hardly any change.

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not kidding though. I really haven't tried PBR. I couldn't even tell you what A PBR bottle looks like. It's not like I've avoided it. I'm from another country where we don't have it, is all.

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

I will make sure to try and it and let you know what I think.

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

You know PBR is "Pabst Blue Ribbon" right? Have you had that?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yes Jon, I know PBR is "Pabst Blue Ribbon".

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

you know, i really wouldn't go out of my way to try pbr. it's swill but generally speaking it's the cheapest beer you'll find at a bar. unless you can find a place that serves schlitz, which i will be drinking at the ponys/tnv/syz show saturday because i have a serious case of the povertys.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.nobleach.com/images/apr06/chicks_pabst_blue_ribbon.jpg

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I guess I just assumed it was some kind of joke beer that you buy when you just want cheap beer. At least, that's what I gathered from reading the internet. Also, I had an irrational distrust of American beers which I am now greatly ashamed of.

I googled PBR and found this.
http://www.plan59.com/images/JPGs/pab47bowl.jpg

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was in a bar and LA and I asked for the cheapest thing they had (I was very drunk), half-expecting that I would finally be trying PBR...but they handed me a Bud.

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

What is the finest indigenous American beer?

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

What is the US equivalent of Special Brew? Or do you have Special Brew?

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

BEAST

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

In the UK Special Brew is occasionally available in bottles in pubs, but it is almost never served draft. Most pubs refuse to sell it because its high alcohol content leads to excessive drunkenness and unwarranted behaviour among customers. However, it is widely sold in off licences and supermarkets nationwide. Special Brew is extremely popular among tramps and the poorer community and off licence owners will often say it is their best selling item[citation needed], leading to it sometimes being called 'Tramp Fuel' or 'Tramp Juice'. Its price and high alcohol content allows users to become extremely drunk quickly at a low cost should they desire to do so. Drinkers also enjoy the drink for its strong syrupy taste and many will often attempt to refute its image as a tramps and street drinkers drink. Many consumers can be seen to have a strong affinity with the drink, as shown in the tribute song by Bad Manners "Special Brew". The British comedian Peter Serafinowicz refers to Special Brew as "Trampagne".

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

I think having cheap Yuengling around all the time in college also spoiled me on cheaper beers.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

there is the lovely brewing tradition of malt liquor...which is pretty close to Special Brew. kinda

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

little guy of highlife so much less appealing than the long necks...which i have consumed too many of. i still rate it as a summer beer.

harpoon summer just retruned to place by me...thats a fine happy hour beer

bb, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

hopslam sounds great, they do not have in california but maybe I can try it when I am in Indianapolis.

admrl, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

I love the language on this site

"Pale amber color, creamy off-white head. Sweet, caramelly grassy hoppy aroma. Metallic and nutty flavor and creamy thin mouthfeel. Typical watery nitro/widget ale. Not recommended, not for sauna, not for "sessions"."

Sessions? Mouthfeel?

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

i miss drinking in the snow at night. if it's cold enough for snow to be on the ground here it's too cold to be outside. fucking prairie living.

gross

dmr, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, LOL. Here's beer advocate's definition

session beer
n.

Any beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV, featuring a balance between malt and hop characters (ingredients) and, typically, a clean finish - a combination of which creates a beer with high drinkability. The purpose of a session beer is to allow a beer drinker to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session, without overwhelming the senses or reaching inappropriate levels of intoxication. (Yes, you can drink and enjoy beer without getting drunk.)

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

or getting fat?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

i can drink plenty of beer without getting fat.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

Somehow on my 22nd birthday I easily surpassed 15 Molsons! How did I do that? I also drank PUNCH

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

beer will make you fat, it's true.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

i have the tinest little beer gut ;___;

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

The purpose of a session beer is to allow a beer drinker to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session, without overwhelming the senses or reaching inappropriate levels of intoxication.

one man's "session beer" is another man's "waste of time and money"

she once got upset bc her bottle was too difficult to open, wrote a letter to pabst complaining about it and they gave her a free 12-pack. lesson: start complaining to beer companies and get free beer!

Ed III go to RTX?

elmo argonaut, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

uncertain about rtx. was never a huge trux fan. I guess there's some carcrash value there but if I go to a show this week I'll probably try to hit up raccoo-oo-oon on thursday.

the juicifer gig last week was like live show aversion therapy. me and others had ringing ears even *with* earplugs. in a space roughly the size of a 3 bay car garage, the opener's guitarist played through 2 full stacks, and the bands didn't get quieter after that. capping with juicifer, whose sole guitarist played through *16* cabinets and a rack of heads, a literal wall of sound. this arms race shit is getting out of hand.

Edward III, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

July 6 - Fujiya & Miyagi & TBA
August 31 - Battles & TBA

the Celebrate Booklyn schedule for the Prospect Park bandshell looks sucky. I'll go see the Hold Steady on 8/9 and that's about it. and yes I realize most of you probably hate them. just sayin'.

of course, as long as the transportation fee is reasonable too.

zombie update: registration was good, we made it into the league -- though all the returning teams were accepted. the fake blood turned out amazing, really dark & thick & lifelike. i did some very basic gore f/x with torn & peeled latex on my arm & face, which when covered in the fake blood, was really gruesome -- one of my teammates, a huge horror movie fan herself, was actually queasy looking at it. i count that as success.

deathroes set last night was INSANE. total darkness + fog machine in overdrive + 3000 watt strobes + crowd that dances/slams/throbs to screeching noise as if it were the second coming of the butthole surfers. it felt like being in a scene from altered states, I was waiting for a vortex drain to open up in the floor and suck us all into some primordial plane of existence.

was talking to one of the deathroes guys later and he said they usually don't get that kind of audience reaction. providence=love.

Edward III, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

that's kind of how it was seeing Indian Jewelry (minus the slamdancing)

dmr, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

chicago kevin, Friday, 25 May 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know what to do tomorrow! I can't organize, tho: too tired, too late, plus things like dinners always go awry and are not really very satisfying for everyone.
