oh crap that second option for the Q should be the W. can Vic fix polls?

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

wait, what? you tricked me into voting for the wrong line. INVALID POLL.

dmr, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

NQRQ

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

like NRBQ.

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

in terms of what?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

convenience to you, reliability, cleanliness, etc.
just vote jerk.

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think any of us have admin / poll-fixing abilities
everyone should vote L anyway ;-)

sleep, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

what is the 9 train

sleep, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

lol

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

L train sucks because it's always so crowded.

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

5 from the UES on a weekday morning = even worse

sleep, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

the 4 & 5 seem to have narrower cars than the L does. i mean, i wouldn't vote for them either. the 4 does stop close to my apartment though.

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

the 4 + 5 aren't as crowded as the L during rush hour. it's crowded from 14th st up to 42nd, but empties out after that and i can usually sit down after that. also, reliable. HOWEVER, i wouldn't vote for either.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

The Q is fast as hell, can get you from Prospect Heights to Times Square in a half an hour or less with few stops. And it goes to Kensington.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

where is air-train?

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

i dig trains that drop me off in fronta my house

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for the 7 train because everyone hates it and thinks it is smelly, but it is actually a great train.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

my least favorite trains are the R and V.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

didn't they get rid of the 9 train? I hadn't needed to ride it for a year and when I went to catch it I was so confused. It used to be the 2,3 and 1,9 until recently.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

I like to imagine the L train like that old snl skit where eddie murphy goes whiteface and finds out that the white people party on the bus as soon as the black person gets off. Like the hipsters get an open bar as soon as the immigrants and working class get off.

i vote for L.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

the L train is def the best.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

maybe we should have a poll for best non mta subway nyc transit options

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

the v sucks.

lauren, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

The 7 train is the SLOWEST TRAIN I've ever taken. It goes to great places and I have to love it because I live in queens, but even the express is pretty slow. And the non-express, going through sunnyside and LIC takes forever. From 61st street, it can be up to 40 minutes to get to Grand Central, while it's 10 minutes with no stops to Penn Station on the Lirr. Worth the extra 2 dollars.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but the 7 gets extra points for running above ground. of course it's slow. but you get to look out the window.

i know i've gotten to flushing from grand central in like 20 minutes on the express!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

i probably wouldn't want to commute on it, but the 7 is classic

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

honestly, the most efficient commute i've had in ny was when i lived in greenpoint and took the G to the 7 to grand central. it took me 20 minutes to get to work.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

no JMZ, no credibility

ghost rider, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

The 7 express is fine, it's the regular one that's a drag. And there've been service interruptions at totally random times. I've had to get in the car and drive to Queens Plaza to pick up people twice.

Things like the G and the 7 are only great during rush hour. Imagine a G to the 7 trip at 3 in the morning.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

whoa no jmz

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

the G at any time other than rush hour is a mess, but i didn't realize there were lots of service interruptions on the 7 :( i've only had good experiences. i bet it's not as bad as the L, at least!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

the L is not bad anymore

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

JMZ is the best for the view and phone yapping while sneaking round to the L the back way

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes i am supposed to be at work at like, 9 am, for a meeting or something, and the L fucks me up every single time. L from 8-8:30 ALWAYS seems to have a fucking 10 minute gap between two trains causing the following two-three trains to be too full to board. this happens at least weekly.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the 7 has been notoriously bad recently. There were several weekends in a row with no service at all, that was planned. But whatever they were doing obviously wasn't enough because after that it kept fucking up. I take the LIRR to work every day when I'm freelancing my main onsite gig which is way on the west side. It's either take 7 to the E to 34th st then walk 2 blocks west, or take the LIRR to 34th st and walk two blocks west. So my commute is either an hour plus on a crowded subway, or 15 minutes sitting down on the LIRR.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

The JMZ would be way better if it went into rollercoaster mode on the bridge

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

one good thing about the JMZ, get in the first car and press your face on the front window as its going on the bridge

sanskrit, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Does the JMZ have propane heaters on the tracks?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for the 1, because I am exactly as UNCOOL as Jerry Seinfeld and shit.

nabisco, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Alternately, exactly as cool as Suzanne Vega.

nabisco, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

i have a feeling that the L is going to win this, which is just so wrong ;_;

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, 7 weekend crap is the definistion of horsepoop. but im fond of it too. it can be painfully slow at times. (also people that ride the 7 dont understand that whole wait for people to get off before trying to get on issue...or the keep to the right thing...also: conductors are notorious on shutting the doors in like 2 seconds -- so, maybe the in myface getting on people have a point) G to 7 is complete pants in non-rush hour situations...

ok all that said, being able to see the skyline coming/gowing across LIC is an impt part of my day.

i half miss the n/w for that reason only. otherwise n/w made me lotsa crazy for a long time when i went btwn ditmars and graham regularly.

R is fine for a while, but once it splits from the N in brooklyn it is maddening. everytime i thought id get to Bay Ridgeon time I ended up being 20 minutes late...

The F seems much better recently, but i still dont care for the taste of it...

why go on.

bb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

this poll is making me realize how sheltered ive been recently...

but, i am claustorphobic, and i don't like being touched by strange people, so taking the L train is kind of horrifying for me at rush hour.

also why does it stop at 3rd avenue, that always bothers me!

n - awesome to brooklyn, suxors to queens.
l - clean, don't mind it on the way home bc i almost always get a seat, but often makes me v. angry in am when it stops in the tunnel btw union and 6th ave for 10 minutes when all i wanna do is transfer to the freaking f train!
v - i like this train because it gets me to/from work, like the f, but is less crowded (especially during evening rush hour).

guys i was on this crazy insane new n (or was it q, i can't remember!) train the other day. it had an lcd tv screen thing telling you about the stops!!!

i mean, i take the bus if i'm that broke

bell_labs, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

exactly! oh god the day i spent going back and forth to jfk on the jmz/a/airtrain/walking around long term parking in the rain bc i left keys at home but then couldn't find them when i went back and had to call a fucking locksmith = no more airtrain love.

tehresa, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

i don't get it:

airtrain = $5
taxi = $45

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

not that a cab can't take just as long, but subway to airtrain is a lengthy trip and a hassle if you've got much luggage. good for meeting arrivals though.

i hate the airtrain so much. the free bus that used to go through long term parking from the subway to the airport took just as long as the airtrain but was free.

Yerac, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

The L line has added riders at a faster pace than the subway system as a whole, according to data from New York City Transit. The busiest station on the Brooklyn part of the line is Bedford Avenue, in Williamsburg, which had 4.99 million riders pass through the turnstiles last year, the agency reported. That was a 139 percent increase from 1995, when 2.09 million riders entered the station. Over all, subway ridership increased 46 percent in the same period.

mizzell, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

wait does the free bus not run to jfk anymore? that is obnoxious, if true.

fuck a airtrain.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

That bus that used to drive through long-term parking, though, was subject to the conditions of many many parking lots. I've missed a plane before because the bus was stopped at a bottleneck caused by ONE SUV that had parked in an entrance and the person walked away -- returning just as the towtruck was driving up to pull it away, but by that time we lost 20 mins.

I try to get to the airport earlier these days, but these things happen....

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

i use the subway like once a month. though i like the thing on the L now where they tell you when next one is coming.
that's probably not even that new!

noizez duk, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

the airtrian thing though, it still stops at all the long term parking. mebbe you don't have to wait in traffic to get OUT of it, but you stll have to go there. ugh. fuck a airtrain, indeed.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Thursday, 24 May 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

and the 1 train is kinda fucked, it's always mysteriously delayed or suddenly starts running express just in time for you to miss yr stop.

I think I'm gonna chance it on the g anyway to get up to warsaw (guestlist for liars landed in my lap so we're gonna go)

dmr, Sunday, 10 February 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

I love the NW from Ditmars--always get a seat, always a train waiting at the station so you can sit down inside and not wait out in the cold, and stunning views. It's terribly slow and stops every few yards it seems, but who cares when it's not that crowded and the most annoying people on it are young dramatic artist wannabes.

I like the 7 reverse commute in the mornings because it comes about every 1 to 2 minutes, and again the views. I love the cars that run outisde--I feel so much less penned in. I took the 7 (no express trains for the time being) out to Flushing the other day though and it took forever. Once you cross Flushing Park it seems you're heading into no-man's land.

I like the R/V reverse commute in the morning because it runs at least every 5 minutes, but I can't really say anything else nice about it. The outward-bound V and F seems smellier in Queens than in Manhattan--which makes no sense because they are the same trains. The F out by Jamaica seems pretty destitute. The annoying thing about waiting for the V is that you are always tricked by a noisy, express F barrelling by.

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 10 February 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

The F train was skipping 14th Street this weekend too, so I stayed home and decongested.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 11 February 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

The thing is that shuttle buses usually come way more often than trains do! Well they have to, cos they hold fewer people, don't they. But when the G was down a few weeks ago it meant you were standing on the curb for less time than you'd stand on the platform. Dunno how it is when the L is on hold.

Laurel, Monday, 11 February 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

pretty much the same! for me, when they are shuttling, i can just walk to lorimer so it's not a big deal. even last few weekends' not running to 8th ave and skipping 3rd avenue and switching trains at bedford was really not bad, because they did seem to run more frequently and who needs to use 3rd avenue stop anyway when you have 1st and union square?
