The Gossip singer Beth Ditto says gay men in the fashion industry are to blame for the worrying size zero trend.
Plus-sized Beth, who has posed naked for this month's cover of NME magazine, slammed homosexual designers for putting unrealistic pressure on women to be skinny.
Beth told the music publication: "If there's anyone to blame for size zero, it's not women. Blame gay men who work in the fashion industry and want these women as dolls.
― cutty, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
sure, blame the gays for your fucking fattey problem
my boss pointed out today that they definitely photoshopped that cover to make her butt look smaller.

"Kate is amazing. I spent one night talking to her and she just said the most amazing things about bodies," explained Ditto. At first I didn't think I was going to like her, but she just turned up to one of our shows and said, 'Do you know what I hate Beth? I hate it when people tell my big girlfriends, 'You have a beautiful face...' I mean, that's a really radical concept."

i don't mean to jump on the guys calling a lady fat bandwagon, but there's a point at which serious health/mobility problems are a risk and based on the weight ditto has gained over the past few years she's well down that road.

Whoah, Jon/Lauren/etc, that was not my response to her appearance at all (I just GISed). But I didn't know of her pre-this thread, so I dunno what the history is, what her lifestyle is, etc. "Morbidly obsese" is some strong language, though, and I wouldn't apply that to her pictures on an objective basis.

Perpetua began legal action against Wikipedia in 2007 on the grounds that its article on Fluxblog frequently claimed that the blog was created and updated by a series of inanimate objects, musicians and Croatian footballers, rather than Perpetua. Ironically, Perpetua himself has been banned from editing Wikipedia since December 2005 for repeatedly claiming that Claudio Ranieri is sexually aroused by killing horses. Ironically, the allegations later transpired to be true, but the ban was never lifted.

Since when is morbidly obese STRONG LANGUAGE? It's a medical classification:
Am I morbidly obese? # more than 100 lbs. over your ideal body weight, or # have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40, or # have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight
I have morbidly obese friends, it's not an "OH GOD I THINK YOU'RE GROSS" phrase, it's more like "dude, put down the cheeseburger, I am afraid for you."

― jessie monster, Thursday, 31 May 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)
In an analysis led by Lopez-Jimenez of 40 studies involving 250,000 people, heart patients with normal BMIs were at higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease than people whose BMIs put them in the "overweight" range (BMI 25-29.9) Lancet. 2006 August 19;368(9536):666-78. Patients who were underweight or severely overweight had an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The implications of this finding can be confounded by the fact that many chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cause weight loss before the eventual death. In light of this, higher death rates among thinner people would be the expected result.

dudes, BMI is pretty much for statistical analysis only and doesn't have much to do with your actual body fat percentage
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 31 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)
wiki:
Body mass index (BMI) or Quetelet Index is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height. It was invented between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet during the course of developing "social physics".

― Catsupppppppppppppp dude x, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)
the last time i went to a doctor he was concerned about my low blood pressure. actually the last time i went to a doctor was for a job with the justice department (federal bureau of prisons) and the prison doctor told me i was the most flexible person he'd ever seen. that kind of creeped me the fuck out.
also, the prison went into lockdown during my interview and i had to stay an extra 90 minutes.

Of course none of us are fat! BMI is a bunch of crap. I just put in my lowest adult weight and it still comes to over 22, and at the time my face was sunken and my friends were debating an intervention. So that's pretty much hilarious.

Taco Bell Challenge:
$10 dollars to be spent between tacos (and tacos ONLY) at the Bell, and 40s. The yield must be consumed in its entirety, in under an hour. Winner is whoever finishes first, but will be DQ'd if s/he can't hold in the payload for at least another hour.

Word that black people use that means just about anything. It really has no meaning whatsoever. Words like this (dub, krunk, skeet, etc.) are particularly useful when trying to maintain a small vocabulary.

i used to play bocce on the beach all the time. i don't know is that some weird bacce-petanque hybrid? it was on beach but w/ bocce balls. anyway, we tried to switch to lawn once and balls went flying all over the place because apparently you throw w/ a lot more force on the beach where you don't get as much rolling as on lawn. major lolz.
let's play boccetanque, dudes!
also: i will play scrabble with anyone anytime! can't guarantee i will win, but i still love it.

can anyone xplain why the womenfolk seem to think, currently, that wearing big bands of elastic outside their dress/shirts is a way to walk around the streets recently? i noted three women doing this yesterday (one is a co-worker i know is kinda bonkers to begin with) and now that picture. are they doing heavy lifting?
― bb, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)
Well if you're going to wear a top as a whole dress, you have to maximize the allure by not only showing enough leg to strangle a mule-train but also nipping it in to make sure passers-by know that there's a waist under there.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)
To be fair elastic is a lot more comfortable than wide leather belts cos it doesn't threaten to bisect yr torso when you lean over...but that's prob why belts are classier.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

i am convinced that pretty skinny chicks just hate sex and thus try to make themselves look as unattractive as possible (by wearing stupid headbands)

i am convinced we need to erase most of the 80's from the collective memories.
and the clothes are just a start.
at the end of it, though..if the kids are having fun with their clothes..i shouldn't care. i'm trying to restrict my criticism to people that spend time, money and energy to look, not just silly, but uncomfortable.
fashion writing is terrible in general. i would xpect the blogs to be even worse. im not going to even look at jon's link. it will make me so sad about us.

for a while i considered having a go at writing about fashion. before i gave up on caring about fashion i gave up trying to sort out how to write about it properly...or atleast better.
