I have laughed many times, perhaps over-rated but not unfunny. I have even enjoyed Garfield sometimes and do not understand the vitriol against it.

i like the early ones best from before the neurotic personalities were established. there's one where patty has this hope chest. violet asks her what it is and she explains that it's a chest where you keep things for when you'll get married. violet asks her what she has in it and she says "charlie brown" and opens it and CHARLIE BROWN IS INSIDE THE BOX.

He drew them weird in the early ones.
As a kid i collected all the old pulp paperbacks. parents would take me to garage sales and used bookstores to search for all the old ones .. still have them all in a box somewhere.
― Stormy Davis, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)
garfield cats = obnoxious ass
Existence is problematic and disturbing. In one weekend strip, Schulz succinctly describes the horror of discovering one’s own existence in the world:
Linus: I’m aware of my tongue ... It’s an awful feeling! Every now and then I become aware that I have a tongue inside my mouth, and then it starts to feel lumped up ... I can’t help it ... I can’t put it out of my mind. ... I keep thinking about where my tongue would be if I weren’t thinking about it, and then I can feel it sort of pressing against my teeth ...
― Jordan, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)
That strip always stuck with me.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

there was a great series of peanuts hardcover books in the late 70s/early 80s that were about science, history subjects, etc. i remember those fondly and wish i still had 'em.
― hstencil, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)
Mattel, of all people, put out a boxed set(like 10-12 volumes) of handcover reprinted strips that I read constantly from the age of 7 onward. When my parents sold the house and moved to Knoxville, we went thru everything and gave all the Peanuts, C&H, Bloom County, and Garfield books to my friend to infect his own kids with.

― Pashmina, Thursday, 31 May 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
stencil OTM all over this piece
ive brought this up before, and never got the answer i wanted: does anyone remember a 60s-70s peanuts arc (i know it from a paperback my brothers had) where linus was talking in a few strips about the sub-par lunches his mom would pack, then in one strip charlie brown asks him what he got for lunch that day, and he like wrinkles his face a little, and says "a peanut butter donut"?
this strip (whether it exists or not) has always been like the rosetta stone of peanuts for me: its this combo of absurdity, vague inexplicable disappointment, and a pervasive sense of nonplussedness. i think its like good seinfeld in that way, except way more cryptic or something?
― 69, Thursday, 31 May 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)
stencil - i do disagree that its not supposed to be funny, but i think its like really dryer than people expect? and not only warm-hearted, but ambig/complex.
― 69, Thursday, 31 May 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)
ohhhh yes! i completely forgot those untill you mentioned it. i used to get them from the library when i was a kid...my mother felt that they were a reasonable balance to real books

― rrrobyn, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)
Same answer as the ILC thread, 69; I think it was Linus tying his sandwich in a knot. I have all the slipcovered sets and about twelve of the ol' skool softcovers.

― gabbneb, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)
i'll just say dude was writing comings for 10 to 15 years too long -- towards the end when the Sunday strip punchlines were snoopy thinking "chocolate chip cookie!" it was pretty clear that schulz's marbles had been lost for a while. a wistful, endearing senility, yes, but senility nonetheless.
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)
I like the Sunday strip from I think the late '50s where Charlie Brown walks through like five groups of kids who laugh cruelly at him and make fun of his big head and social awkwardness, then comes back and turns on the radio, and the radio announcer says "Is there nothing in this world more beautiful than the sweet sound of little children laughing?" and Charlie Brown kicks the shit out of that fuckin radio
