Mattel, of all people, put out a boxed set(like 10-12 volumes) of handcover reprinted strips that I read constantly from the age of 7 onward. When my parents sold the house and moved to Knoxville, we went thru everything and gave all the Peanuts, C&H, Bloom County, and Garfield books to my friend to infect his own kids with.

ive brought this up before, and never got the answer i wanted: does anyone remember a 60s-70s peanuts arc (i know it from a paperback my brothers had) where linus was talking in a few strips about the sub-par lunches his mom would pack, then in one strip charlie brown asks him what he got for lunch that day, and he like wrinkles his face a little, and says "a peanut butter donut"?

this strip (whether it exists or not) has always been like the rosetta stone of peanuts for me: its this combo of absurdity, vague inexplicable disappointment, and a pervasive sense of nonplussedness. i think its like good seinfeld in that way, except way more cryptic or something?

i'll just say dude was writing comings for 10 to 15 years too long -- towards the end when the Sunday strip punchlines were snoopy thinking "chocolate chip cookie!" it was pretty clear that schulz's marbles had been lost for a while. a wistful, endearing senility, yes, but senility nonetheless.

I like the Sunday strip from I think the late '50s where Charlie Brown walks through like five groups of kids who laugh cruelly at him and make fun of his big head and social awkwardness, then comes back and turns on the radio, and the radio announcer says "Is there nothing in this world more beautiful than the sweet sound of little children laughing?" and Charlie Brown kicks the shit out of that fuckin radio
