jon otm, though everyone does it for a minute or two after the break-up
― strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, v. true. but such a good feeling when you get it out of your system :)
― tehresa, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)
this is NOT minute or two, sadly.
a downside of online social networking is when an ex is an extended member of your friend group and you're dumb enough to actually click on their name and see that there is some vague thing wrong in their life and for some reason, give a shit.
you do still get the anti-creep filter of having to ask shared friends what's up, at which point they give you the eye and you feel like an asshole
― mh, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)
which is crepier? stalking exes, or stalking crushes?
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)
exes
― ghost rider, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)
if we're just talking about "internet stalking" then "stalking" crushes can in some v limited cases be considered cuet. this is never the case with exes.
― ghost rider, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
Ban them on facebook. My ex did it to me and although it made it pretty painfully obvious how big shitheads some "friends" are, cutting yrself off is the best.
(Roy Orbison's "Mystery Girl" just came on :/)
xpost EXES
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
oh and guys be sure to be really careful not to del.icio.us your friends' exes home addresses :((((
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)
oh yeah, this followed the weekend where i had a heart-to-heart with my dad over beers later causing me to go into some serious self-doubt about my past ability to hold together romantic relationships
good times, i tell you what
x-post jon, removing or banning is such a good idea and something i've done before, but i am not quite sure it would work in this case without causing me some other grief
― mh, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I had to block my ex on AIM. On one hand, though, it can be for the best--I cut an ex out of my life for a year, started talking to him again, and now we're good friends with no awkwardness.
Stalking crushes is only creepy if they've made it obvious they don't want to get with you.
― jessie monster, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
Also, dude, block her before she blocks you. It'll make you a lot more unhappy when SHE does it.
haha otm
― That one guy that quit, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)
Also be sure to tell her if you know all the passwords to her email/myspace/aim. Because even if you would never use them, it's best not thinking about it.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)
hahahaha oh shit is that ever otm
― ghost rider, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
hah, post-breakup we were still on pretty good terms for a few weeks, then communication tapered off a little, then... hell, i don't want to go into the whole thing, but basically i cracked and we opted to not talk as i obviously still was clinging to something and she was seeing someone. basically that conversation made me: 1. seriously get my shit together and enjoy a work trip to san fran 2. realize that i don't "get depressed," i have cyclical depression issues and have to make sure i get the right food, exercise, and sunshine
right now i'm sitting on the whole four months down the road, smiling and nodding as she reintegrates with my social group thing and trying to not be an asshole
― mh, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
The Facebook privacy stuff is awesome. Its like the other person doesn't exist. Myspace, not so much. I've thought about doing some greasemonkey stuff for that so I can look at my friend's comments but there's always the stray flickr embed from mutual friends etc.
Also I may be coming across as a little crazy!
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

there is an ex of mine from a couple years ago who i am sure never changed her passwords, even after i told her. thankfully i have absolutely no interest in seeing how much drama is going on in her life
haha, jon, i would be all over that shit, and i am sure a lot of other people would be too. these are common neuroses
― mh, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)
by the way, thanks guys, this is the most even-handed and sympathetic response i've gotten in weeks
― mh, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)
also good is when you don't know if they're reading your website anymore.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)
Also I may be coming across as a little crazy! perhaps but at least it makes me feel a little better about my past ex-stalking (which is now down to like, 0, for all exes ever!!!!!!)
c/d: finding out someone you have been on and off with for 5 years (currently off, though still talking...) is engaged via accidental encounter on social networking site. yikes!
― tehresa, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

"you need a misa, not a minmei"
o_O
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
I never stalked an ex so much as vindictive "HAHA YOU AREN'T GETTING LAID BET YOU WISHED YOU HADN'T DUMPED ME NOW" smug facebooking.
― jessie monster, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Note: I never actually SAID that to him, I just thought it. Whenever I was sad.
― jessie monster, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)
so the other drama is my solo whiskey drinking adventure a couple weeks back wherein i apparently sent the ex's best friend, who i only knew through her, a message on myspace (of all things) asking how she was doing and asking her feelings on house ownership since i've been kind of shopping around. she then added me as a friend?!?
seriously, wtf (and those safety rules are great!)
― mh, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)
a lot of people add anyone who messages them by default, maybe. don't overthink it.

um, just to look at it differently, is it really *that awful* to wonder how someone in your friend group is doing and actually care if the answer is "not so great"? good lord, the rules and expectations we impose on ourselves. you're not a robot, i don't think it's a big deal or morbid or anything to simply click on someone's facebook profile.
i do not recommend drinking lots of whiskey and messaging people though

well, not really stalking, it's just she's a graphic designer and I know she'll be at this ch1p k1dd talk in town on saturday, so i've spent the last few weeks realizing i'll run into her and need to seem completely neutral and level, and possibly like i have all my shit together

my ex is one of those ppl who remain good friends with about all her past relationships but she dumped me for another ex (who she stopped seeing because of me but was actually her best friend during the time we were seeing each other) because i was a 'an alcoholic who cant function in society'. which she KNEW THE WHOLE TIME. so she decides to be a dumbass & romanticize my faults by making me into a rimbaud or something & then i get MY heart broken?? what the fuck guys. when she told me over the phone she ended up screaming at me for basically no reason & it wasnt just screaming it reached that pitch that goes beyond a scream to something like a banshee wail, does anyone know what im talking about? ony girls seem to be capable of it. so i figured she still had pretty strong feelings for me & called her back a couple weeks later but she hung up & said if i called again she'd call the cops & i called back & she ACTUALLY DID CALL THE COPS. so we dont talk anymore. anyway i cyberstalk her somewhat but ive gotten better about it lately.
im getting a livejournal account bye

― max, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)
This is bad news, dudes. You must chill. Eventually I found that the sick, agitated, crazy in the head feeling that I got from online stalking ex acted as aversion therapy to my wanting to do it. I only forget that now once every few months and I am always sorry.
― Laurel, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)
I mean if you really want to wallow, no one can stop you. But if want to be not unhappy and not crazy, you have to stop yrself and get up away from the computer. I find going to do something purely physical like clean house or do a dumb heavy chore or take a work-out is the best relief, b/c afterwards I'm tired and don't have the nervous energy to get head-fucked about it.
― Laurel, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)
oooh i know exactly what you mean. it does crazy bad shit to my stomach so that i'm mostly terrified to do it these days. xpost
― tehresa, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)
but also the good thing is that in addition to not wanting that, i just don't care anymore and the idea to go digging doesn't even pop into my head much at all anymore.

― max, Saturday, 30 June 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)
Everyone keeps telling me that too, but all I've wanted to do is be a complete hermit and listen to music a fuck of a lot. I have to socialise a shitload tonight so that should get me out of me recent slump. I'm actually feeling orright today anyway.
― Trayce, Saturday, 30 June 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)
Best revenge in ugly breakup: get gym membership, eat less (but regularly) and get it best shape of your life. Physical pain tends to distract from emotional, it helps you sleep better and you end up looking and feeling way better so that when you see them in three months they be like DAYUM
