I will be out of town and cannot drum. So if everyone could politely stop talking about this from now until forever, that would be fucking awesome.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

(I checked "SHIT")

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

i am going to be out of town ;_;

jhøshea, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

but it has occurred to me that 77 drummers while novel is likely not going to be nearly as good as you know an actual boredoms show

jhøshea, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

i'm thinking of it less like a concert and more like a one-time-only art installation

dmr, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

i no longer out of town? i go to brooklyn?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

it's a happening.

i'm just gonna be scening it up in the VIP tent with a bottle of champagne, huffing scotchguard.

but it has occurred to me that 77 drummers while novel is likely not going to be nearly as good as you know an actual boredoms show

have you ever been to a drum performance? like a taiko performance for example? you may be surprised.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah taiko is great but this is just a one nite only pick up band. hard to imagine theyre gonna be too tight. but yeah im just being pissy abt missing it.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

i'm hoping "successfully entered into the contest" is just a phrase left over from the submission software they're using

dmr, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

You have successfully been selected to receive a free Momus MP3 everyday.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

i don't understand NYC free outdoor shows.

you have to have tickets (new porn?) or rsvp (vooredoms)? this is very strange to my "oh hey want to walk to the park and see willie nelson and richard thompson let's grab that picnic blanket and a bottle of wine" west coast vibin'.

you have to have tickets (new porn?)

that park where NP's are playing isn't very big

last year or year before they had Malkmus play 4th of July and I ended up watching it from a crowd four deep on the sidewalk (they stopped letting people in the park)

so I dunno which is better, requiring people to get there hours early to line up a la summerstage or doing this online rsvp shit

dmr, Thursday, 28 June 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

the other rsvp stuff seems to me to be a sort of faux-social-networking thing patina - this is how hipsters do community - but not really real?

also, get yr phatty veggie burritos here

gabbneb, Thursday, 28 June 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

the other rsvp stuff seems to me to be a sort of faux-social-networking thing patina

yeah the superchunk rsvp would have got you precisely nothing at the pool show, as far as I could tell -- and this show is being run by the same people (JellyNyc)

.... but the Vice site says it's a requirement, so yeah, better safe than sorry

dumb question of the day: are these entire drumsets, or just snare drums?

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

never mind

as 77 drummers on full 5-piece, 3-cymbal drum kits snake around them in spirals, like the coils of a boa constrictor.

AWESOME

Seven is the 4th prime number.
There are 4 V∞redoms.

The neutral pH - the pH level of pure water.

There are seven logic gates. NOT, AND, OR, NAND, XOR, NOR, XNOR

In the genealogy in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is 77th in a direct line.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

All the while, Eye triggered orchestral samples, swapped microphones for a variety of treated voice effects and played the guitar-fence — a seven-necked structure of interlocking six-string fret boards each tuned to different open chords that he struck with a pair of drum sticks or played four-at-a-time with a metre-long wooden rod. The screaming Eye we’ve come to know and love was surprisingly reserved until towards the end of set when he abandoned his keyboard post to dance and wail in between the three drum kits, leaping in and out of the small space with more energy than most people half his age. (Consequently, I’ve now planned my mid-life crisis around fronting a three-drummer Japanese noise band.) After an exhausting 80-minute set, the crowd still wanted more, and the Boredoms ceded a lengthy encore.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

is that the TO show? cuz that's what it was like. where's that from?

This band is only known as "Boredoms" in North America and Europe and only contains one original member.

EYE /= Boredoms... cf, the hundreds of other Boredoms sideprojects (some of whom also feature Yoshimi)... also not known as Boredoms.

Laurel, Friday, 6 July 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

BOREDOMS request that you leave your cameras at home for 77BOADRUM. In their words, "We want people to remember in their mind, not in their camera." It's looking like it will be beautiful day so remember to bring sunscreen.

dmr, Saturday, 7 July 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Since they're going to let people in as they let people out on a 1 in 1 out basis, I wonder if it by later in the afternoon some people will get bored/hot/whatever and start leaving. Maybe it makes sense to show up late. Or some point in the middle of the afternoon.

yeah it was buried my spam folder too:

Thank you for RSVPing to tomorrow's BOREDOMS 77BOADRUM performance.

Your name has been added to the RSVP list for the event. HOWEVER, the RSVP response has been overwhelming - which means that we CANNOT guarantee admission, except on a first come-first served basis. We cannot overstate this: Not everyone will be allowed in.

The line will begin at the corner of New Dock and Water Street at 2:30pm. Please do NOT arrive before 2:30pm as the police stationed there will ask you to move along. Doors will open at 4pm. After we hit capacity, we can only admit you on a one-in, one-out basis.

PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT, OR TO BE TURNED AWAY.

===========

Use of public transport is highly recommended. The closest MTA stops are York Street on the F train, Clark Street on the 2 and the 3 trains, and Cadman Plaza on the A and C trains.

Starting at 4pm will be DJ sets by Gang Gang Dance, and live performances from Soft Circle and First Nation. 77BOADRUM will begin at 7pm and end with the sunset.

BOREDOMS request that you leave your cameras at home for 77BOADRUM. In their words, "We want people to remember in their mind, not in their camera." It's looking like it will be beautiful day so remember to bring sunscreen.

===========

Since you'll be in the neighborhood, it's worth mentioning that Nike and PowerHouse have a show opening the same day as 77BOADRUM, just around the corner. RE-RUN: A contemporary installation inspired by the renegade spirit and energy of running in the 1970s, including photographs, graphics and a series of specially-commission artworks.
The PowerHouse Arena
37 Main Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn
Exhibition runs July 7 - 22, 2007, open to the public 12pm - 7pm daily.

===========

Also opening is The 5th Annual Vice Photo Show at BICA in Williamsburg. Open daily Wednesday through Sunday from July 7th - August 5th. Copies of Vice Photo Issue available at BICA for the duration of the show.
BICA: 184 Broadway (at Driggs, across from Peter Luger). Williamsburg, Brooklyn

===========

After the performance you're invited to the official 77BOADRUM afterparty: FIXED at Studio B (259 Banker St, Brooklyn). It's the JUSTICE record release party with live performance from Simian Mobile Disco. $12

bb, Saturday, 7 July 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

what a bunch of bullshit. I couldn't stand waiting in that line. hope some of you got in and were able to actually enjoy the show. seems like the worst kind of clusterfuck to me. all my friends bailed out. "it's too hot", "this sucks", "4 hours until they go on?..are you kidding?". I guess if was 18 again I'd stick it out, but, fuck this. I'm getting a pint in the city. I was hoping to meet some of you but maybe some other time. :(

dmr, Sunday, 8 July 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

So hows it all going? Is it over now? Was it crazyass shit? Ive been following this thread with great interest.

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't get in either. The line went for about 6-8 blocks already by 3pm...? And the gates shut for good when we had one block left to move up. I went to a nearby park and could hear a little, but I wanted to SEE!! Clusterfuck unless you cut the line or had a press pass. Or got in line before the time they requested, which was 2.30.

Laurel, Sunday, 8 July 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

Crazy, sounds like we'll have to wait for Jon's review if it is true he got in!

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

No, it's true. Jon and TZA and Optins and maybe a couple of others cut the line and claimed to be press! Good thinking, since the body of the group was out of ruck.

Laurel, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

people who got in: jon, tehrza, forksclovestofu, m1lton parker... i assume steve shasta though i didn't see him

sleep, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah and Optins didn't fake press, he has his own story that he'll have to tell.

Laurel, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

jon and tza got in via forks' j0e's pub vip +3 hookup or something, milton also had a man on the inside

sleep, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

I hope some fucker somewhere has filmed this. I love fuckoff crazy drumming. I wanna see this.

oh i bet every inch of it is on film x2393

rrrobyn, Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised that many people got turned away, it didn't seem that full inside!

I had a really good time. There were too many people sitting down, though and the inevitable compromise between just watching and dancing (I got a better sense of the full spectacle of 77 drummers at the ten minutes I saw of the rehearsal around 2:30).

C0L1N B..., Sunday, 8 July 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

I had a bunch of people on the inside and was even naive enough to turn down an offer...untill it was way too late. Optins was still out there with me and co. untill he left "gonna check it out" never to be seen again. Just before that he was agreeing that giving up and getting frozen hot chocolates was the way to go. I ended up in the same park as Laurel.

Sorry I couldn't port a group in; I felt shitty when I heard they turned everyone away.
I saw Jon across the way moshing with the golden stilt girl. Tie-dyed guy was killing me. There was a three year old in front of me who was totally digging it and getting a reefer buzz and a two year old who started screaming hysterically and had to be taken away. It was good timez.

Pls remind me not to line up for free shows ever ever ever again. What grotesque bullshit.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 8 July 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

i told dan and nicole i was going to bum rush the show but neither they nor i took that very seriously. a few hipsters ahead of me were scoping out river cafe to see how hard the wall was, then turned back. this valet dude opened a door to store a limo or something and i knew it was my only chance. sprinted under the brooklyn bridge anchorage with valets screaming me down, shimmied over a wall with rocks under and cops with their backs to me. hopped into the park and tried to clear the additional fence and wiped out. blended into the crowd and met up with milton parker.

sanskit = awesome
the whole "rsvp system" = so dumb and wtf - i wish they'd honoured those who rsvped ages ago and that all you guys had gotten in :( (ohboy and it would've sucked to have driven 6+ hrs from here and not gotten in, i don't even want to imagine it - memories of going to bumbershoot in 2000 and not getting into magnetic fields show (was pretty into mag fields at the time; kinda heartbroken; proceeded to get wasted, high, wander in on good shows, and make friends with strangers for 2 days though)

from that one video clip though, this looks like it was awesome - the sun and the bridge and all the drums... sigh

rrrobyn, Sunday, 8 July 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

sanskrit, you're my hero. If you're in the city, I have a show you (and anyone else in the nyc ilx contingent that did/n't get into boredoms) may dig that will not involve scaling walls, starting at 7:30pm.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 8 July 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Did you get in then, Strongo? I worried about interstate folks.

Jon Lewis, Sunday, 8 July 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe I got in, that was the most coincidental coincidence there ever could have been. also sorry I reassured sleep that everyone should hang in there -- when I got in there was still tons of room in the park. but the cops really shut the gate down early. even the press list was cut off once the show started.

wonderful to see everyone and I email forksclover to see what happens tonight

Milton Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

well I was obviously 100% wrong about the turnout. had to be 6 or 7,000 there easy. not even counting the people who saw the line and didnt bother getting in it. line was pretty long behind us when they made everyone leave.

after that I tried some last minute hail mary phone bullshit but it didnt work

I guess I should have at least listened to the show but me and vic and shannon said fuckit and went to a bar. ddb was there.

yeah...sorry to hear some of you got the shaft....i didnt ever see the whole line (came up from other side)...we tried to sneak a few people through with artist passes, but there were just too many checkpoints.

i think 7:57 or so pm might have been the stonerrock moment of the decade.

what a goddamned scene...its too bad they couldnt have sorted out a better system for ticketing or entry, cause the event itself was nice. after standing about and chatting shmoozing drinking beers for 3 hrs, i was happy everyone pretty much sat down and rocked with it..i ended up just plopping by the edge of the park and spacing out (had to ask one ckick to can it, though). we took off for a bar down on water to get into a bathroom as things faded down...

cant wait to see what the times say about it tomorrow (k sanneh was around, but i dont know if hell do the write up or if parles was there too)

Good times. It seemed like there was only like 1000 people there tops. I went to BOAFEST 2002 in Osaka (UOREDOMS, ROVO, DJ EYE, OOIOO, PSYCHOBABA) and there were easily 5,000 people there. This was almost as awesome.

sanskrit officially a "kid":

at least 4 or 5 kids jumped the fence and rushed in from the volunteer entrance side gate(apparently). we saw that from up on the bridge, about 5 minutes before or just after it started. the cops were chasing them down like they were bank robbers or something. i wonder if those kids got arrested or what happened to them.

i watched them arrest one of those kids... dunno what happened to the rest.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

oh BTW -- how did those all-important RSVPs work at the gate? were ppl actually giving their names and getting checked off? how big were those clipboards?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

they didn't check RSVPs except for the VIP list. It would have taken too long if they checked names.

Steve Shasta is a hip-hop gold-digging waffle chef living homeless in New York's sewers. Dr "Bill" Morbius is an artistic guerilla former First Lady who believes she is the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian queen. And together, they must defuse a bomb in less than a day that's a thousand miles away.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe they were all in the VIP tent.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

cannot is one word right?

Steve Shasta, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

There were 6,512 people at KeySpan Park yesterday, including the indigent guy I gave my extra ticket to.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

listen: you knew there were 10,000 RSVPs and the park only holds 4,000. The email notice said the line starts at 2:30 and doors are at 4:00. If you didn't understand that meant you should show up at 2:30, then you fucking missed it. So knock it off, old man.

sexyDancer, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

Easy, tiger. We got there at 3, which is not exactly "late" (even if still too late by practical definition). Also, there was supposed to be a one-in/one-out policy which was definitely not followed, I stood at the gate watching groups leave and no one was allowed to take their places.

sexyDancer, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

it sounds like the show was really great and everything but i also had a great time at the barbecue and so the day was not ruined for me. i also do not like waiting in line so getting there an hour earlier, waiting 4 hours, and getting in would have just made me cranky and irritable and hungry and dehydrated during the show. there is not a single musician in the world i would wait around for 5 hours in the hot hot sun to see and not feel a little pissed at them. they are just fucking people after all.

no, they didn't have time to once they read the Times article on Saturday noon.

i do wonder what the ratio of normal folks jst out to see the show vs. vip's is. i was amazed by the # of people with press bands (esp. that i had never seen before)clearly the vip thing was pretty loose..which is really too bad because it makes the whole event yet another..ya gottabe hip to be hip nyc event...rather than an open wonderful thing for the world

There was also a gang of those weird tall-bike people there. What do you call that thing? Anyway, same unattractiveness equation.

Jon Lewis, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

Kekekekeeekekee. I find people who ride unicycles or stilt-walk IN COSTUME nearly intolerable...but it was pretty awesome when a friend showed up at bro's house in Ventura and was like "Hey, I can ride a unicycle, I had to teach myself when I was 13 and wrecked my bike. Here, lemme show you..." with the unicycle they just found at the junk shop the day before. And sure enough, a 6' guy pedaled off like some crazy performing bear! It was amazing, and the middle of the night, and there was a great volume of PBR involved making all things magic.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

Rrrobyn it is nearly totally new. The rhythm is kinda similar to "Super Now" or "Super Sky" (errr the actual song on the Super Sky 12" -- may be "Super 77").... Also "2001 Boredoms" 12" is the same rhythm and the last few seconds of "Super Going" are as well.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

Ahahahahahaha. I was at the "nice beach" but I did see 2-3 people SPRINT across the "busted" ground, and I think at least one of them got away inside the park. It was kind of impressive.

I think if a second group had made a break for it, there might have been a riot. It was tempting.

bb, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Don't be too regretful about living in Chicago. At least you didn't wait 3 hours on line after having "RSVPd" and get turned away (in favor of a thousand or so "VIPs"). Utterly idiotic admission logistics; nice job, Viceland.

bb, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ebert called FC "fascist," which would've worked if they showed the Space Monkeys getting in w/out an RSVP.

i think morbs would fit in really well at NY1 as a television movie criti he could recommend good stuff coming to town and excoriate blockbusters. he would fit in great with pat and whipple. shit i would watch that every morning just for the roffles.

So, when these (and two others w/the other two drummers) showed up in my inbox yesterday from my buddy Alex, I naturally assumed my name was cleverly p-shopped in. But apparently not-- he had his drummer friend (one of the section leaders) pull this off at 777 and didn't tell me.
