Depends! I bought a $30 shower curtain mebbe 7 years ago but it's the heavy vinyl kind and endlessly cleanable without losing awesomeness (it's clear with silver glitter all throughout). You have to commit to cleaning it, though, not throwing away when it gets ganky.

Think about getting the curtain rings with little beads on them, so they roll better -- it will mean less pulling on the curtain/less stress on the vinyl at the holes.

i think the tree/butterfly one is a nice design. it would make me happy to have a tree in my bathroom! the writing on it may be too busy though. or maybe it is not acceptable to have shower curtains intended for children as a 28 year old and i should just get a boring one. hmmm.

Target.com does have some v appealing prints but I can't tell the quality from here and they are still probably what Ben would consider unsophisticated -- pretty much anything other than white or clear or white-on-clear or something v minimalist is going to be silly and "young" in some way. I say as long as it lets light through and you like it, go nuts.

The light thing is big for me, I hate solid ones that block and/or discolor the light in the shower (or the rest of the room).

the tiles in my bathroom are ugly black fake marble so no matter how sophisticated i get it's still gonna look bad. and the bathroom's small, so i want something somewhat transparent but also colorful and bright.

There was a fancy home store in Soho years ago that always had nifty minimalist house decor stuff and design-award stuff but of course in those days I could barely find the same store twice, I was always getting so lost, so I don't remember where it was, and don't remember the name. So uh there. But they had terrific heavy vinyl shower curtains and that's where I got mine.

Now we have a lighter, cheaper one from Target with a silly "retro" print on it (not my choice) but admittedly it is hard to find an outdoor space big enough to properly scrub a dirty shower curtain so replacing it is sometimes easier.

Light tables would be awesome, actually, and I'm sure someone has done before. Ditto shadowbox tables with complete model train-style villages in them, which I saw at a party loft once.

my shower curtain is high-quality clear vinyl with a white and black and grey pattern of 4" dots. but my bathroom is v small and involves the colours black, white, grey and pink. but i didn't choose any of them. i didn't even choose the shower curtain - my friend left that when i took over the apartment from her

i think it is okay to spend some money on a shower curtain, esp because it's your bathroom! it's not like you don't spend time in there.

i was at a show at sin-e once, pretty drunk but towards the end could swear i was getting that photo developer huff smell. lots of junior high memories evoked. i told the girls i was with that i was certain that the place was used as a someones printing lab during the day. they had no idea what i was talking about and thought i was hitting on them.

Waterdrape curtains are really good but on their website almost everything is out of stock. Places in the city carry them. It is ultra thick vinyl, you could easily wrap a body in it.

rrrobyn - those are from angela adams. except they are from her fancy "collection" line that costs ungodly amounts of money and are all specialty made. they had them at her store in portland (disclosure - my mom works there) and they are gorgeousss but cost tens of thousands of dollars. my mom's discount doesn't really make much of a dent getting me closer to having one, sadly!

oh man last time i was home in maine, we went and visited some family friends who have been "fortunate" over the years and just built their dream house. they have all this automated bullshit; remote controls in every room, piped in stereo, window blinds & showers controlled by remote. they also included rooms for their "grandkids" even though neither of their adult children are married/engaged?! eek.

the coolest shower they had though has a floor made of pebbles. i bet it feels neat to stand on.

this thread makes me sad that i didn't get the butterfly/frog curtain, just some tasteful crinkly blue one. i heeded ben's advice.
