As leviathan is the king of fishes, so the ziz is appointed to rule over the birds. His name comes from the variety of tastes his flesh has; it tastes like this, zeh, and like that, zeh. The ziz is as monstrous of size as leviathan himself. His ankles rest on the earth, and his head reaches to the very sky.

― Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:37 (seventeen years ago)
is there a band opus one? i meant the label. i have two great records put out by them, but have seen a bunch of mediocre ones come in and out as well.
― ian, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:49 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, there's a swedish prog band.
don't know much about Opus One as a label -- I have that Rzewski LP. I've heard good things about 'The Prismatic Flute' LP and some of the McLean Mix stuff is interesting, a lot of those other LPs look a little dry but you never know
I didn't even know all these pieces had been on the same disc before, but this Annea Lockwood / Ruth Anderson LP is great -- -- 'SUM" is a early 70's TV channel surf / media cutup & 'Tiger Balm' is neat. I met Annea last week, she's great -- might do some tape transfers of her 60's stuff soon

jax0n, how do u set the line in gain
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago)
i don't set anything. here's exactly how i do it.
turntable > phono preamp > receiver > rca to 1/8" > headphones jack > audacity. record.
once i record, then truncate, i find spikes that are most likely pops and do click removal. then i select all and normalize to 0db and export to wav.
― jaxon, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 20:33 (seventeen years ago)
sorry, not headphone jack - mic in jack

I just use trial and error, you can adjust on your amp or mixer and on the input level slider at the top of audacity
xpost yeah

Scanning through Zolar X and DNA comp CDs a bit, using CD player remote control The Fall - Totale's Turns (This is the best Fall live album! Of course, the only ones that count as real Fall live albums are the early three, Seminal Live, 27 Points, and that one from a few years ago that had a mathematical equation or something for the title. The rest are a bunch of cash-ins.) Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives (Such a great album!) Tried listening to a CD-R burn of the Shinki Chen album that a friend made for me a few years ago, but I wasn't into it so I listened to Sir Lord Baltimore instead. Aorta - "Sleep Tight/Catalyptic" Bump - s/t (Wouldn't recommend this 1970 American psych album, but the Gear Fab CD has their classic 1969 single "Winston Built the Bridge.") Creme Soda - Tricky Zingers (Some of it, anyway. Trizo 50 were better than this group.)

Been replaying 'Locust Abortion technician'.
Checking out Missa by Dieter Schnebel. Which is to be played in an actual church. This is a mass, apparently. In the liner notes he says that there should be more masses, less requiems: "...composers only think of the dead".

Porky Pig: Standard Oil New Music Series Volume 1 - Gelbart / Dan Deacon / Bran Flakes / Big City Orchestra (from 2004 & just checking it out now, it's fun) Stockhausen - Stimmung, Paul Hillier, 2007 recording (more of a room recording, slightly more postured vocal delivery, I think I'm sticking with the Singcircle version) Robert Ashley - Foreign Experiences (much better than Celestial Excursions, more of a Sam Ashley showcase) Ivor Darreg - Detwelvulate! Claudio Parodi - Horizontal Mover (homage to Alvin Lucier) -- I can see why this is getting noticed

Music from the 21st Century ('82 synthesizer music compilation on GNP Crescendo that has Tangerine Dream doing "Tangram" and Don Preston and one of the guys from Zolar X and stuff) T. Rex - Light of Love (This is great! Casablanca put this out in 1974 after Zinc Alloy and Bolan's Zip Gun hadn't been released in America. Zinc Alloy isn't that great, but this album has three really good tracks from it plus eight solid tracks from Bolan's Zip Gun) Steve Treatment - 25 A-Sides ("I've never written a B-Side") Can - Tago Mago (Not too sharp sounding. Maybe I should have the bias setting on I even though it's probably higher quality tape. But this 1990 factory cassette reissue is a cute little guy.) Neu! 2 (Second side doesn't really work but still maybe my favorite Neu! because it's got "Neuschnee" and "Super" on it)

<I>what is up with these guys? psych folk? I always see that reissue around.</I>
It's kind of Grateful Dead-ish west coast psych. Not very folksy, not very hard rock either. The reissue is out of print now, so you should grab it if you've any interest. I can also lend you the LP, happily. I like it. Apparently the main dude is the father of one of those american taliban dudes or something? From wikipedia:
Philip Pearlman is a musician from Western Riverside County, California. He is known in the musical world as the artist behind several psych-folk "happenings" in the 60's and 70's. He has attracted more mainstream attention in recent years because of his son, Adam Yahiye Gadahn, a convert to radical Islam and an al Qaeda operative.
Pearlman attended the University of California at Irvine. The son of a Jewish father and Protestant mother, Pearlman was raised agnostic. He converted to Christianity in the early 1970's, just prior to recording to the underground classic "Relatively Clean Rivers". After conversion he changed his last name to "Gadahn" as a tribute to the Bible's "Gideon".
It's a nice record with some middle eastern instrumentation and a generally positive, sunny vibe.
― ian, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago)
I'm also pretty ambivalent abt the phantom family halo record; i like that really long kinda cosmic track a lot, but the rest is just... meh. maybe better live, if there's any real rock energy. on the record it seems sort of lifeless.

― Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 14:34 (seventeen years ago)
ha, i've heard that one before Mike. It's pretty cool but also kind of UHHHHHGGRGGGGMMM. we'll see.
i dunno if i go to the high on fire show, jon. i might! where/when/who else? i saw them three or foury years ago in providence and it was great.

Lou Reed - Hudson River Wind Meditations (this is great!) Robert Wyatt - Comicopera Tokyo Jihen - Variety (x5 times) Robin Guthrie / Harold Budd - After The Night Falls / Before The Day Breaks Brian Eno - Textures 1989
― Milton Parker, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request (I actually have the CD of this. It sounds great.) Euro-Hits: 20 Hits International (Great Eurodisco comp from around 1980 with Teach In, Luv, Dollar, Shocking Blue, etc.) Kraftwerk - The Man Machine (This is great on LP. The sides are nice as individual things.) Andrew W.K. - Close Calls with Brick Walls (Vinyl pressing on Load does not sound good.) R.E.M. - Chronic Town (Original factory cassette sounds great!) Oh-OK - The Complete Recordings Middle of the Road - "Yellow Boomerang" Abba - "Bang-a-Boomerang" (second of two boomerang songs) Rosa Yemen, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and Arto/Neto tracks on New York No Wave compilation The Fall - Room to Live (This is a little too proto-Perverted by Language for my tastes with the exception of "Marquis Cha-Cha." Interestingly, this song sounds clearer on my tape dub of this that someone recorded off the original record than the version I have on the Palace of Swords LP. Same with the tracks from Hip Priests and Kamerads. Cassettes are pwning this listening list.) The Godz - "Dirty Windows" The Twinkeyz - "Aliens in Our Midst"

Ian-- the Brooklyn show is oct 9 at "williamsburg music hall" (lol, that's North 6 right?).
There is manhat show the night before @ Webster hall. If I go it will be the brooklyn one. I have decided my budget will allow either HoF or Melvins, still deciding.
― Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 23:55 (seventeen years ago)
I guess the other bands are Mono, Panthers and Coliseum.
― Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

― bb, Thursday, 27 September 2007 01:05 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I remember Los Cincos. My band played a show with them once, in fact. (It was this thing put on by Rocket from the Crypt where they advertised that it was going to be a live video simulcast that was going to be on TV in Germany or something, but it was a hoax. There was even an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune about the show and how it was going to be on TV in Germany.)
They were one of the first American groups of that generation to go for more of a completely postmodernist stylistic thing, weren't they? It was interesting at the time that things were moving in that direction. I really liked that first Satisfact album. (Still do.)
― Tim Ellison, Thursday, 27 September 2007 01:29 (seventeen years ago)
xpost - i forget what Los Cincos sounded like, but i had a KXLU (gygax! rip) live cd w/a track by them.
― jaxon, Thursday, 27 September 2007 01:30 (seventeen years ago)
They kind of had a garage band sound, I guess.
― Tim Ellison, Thursday, 27 September 2007 01:31 (seventeen years ago)
yeah! they were a bit all over..dudes were a touch too fast on the return to good ole stoner rock..hell they were an anmoly in ithaca...i just remember loving the dudes and having a great time with them at the show and after...dont have satisfact..but two other cds..ill leonardo tomorrow or soon.
some garage, some space rock, some just funky trippy stuff. i just realized this week that one of their songs features samples from the silly john peel read poem from tyrannosaurus rex's unicorn! i dont think i even knew about the hippie trex at the time...the were soooo excited i knew about can that night...decent homegrown, can, and super mario cart.
question is, whatever happened to 'em?!!!!!!!!!
― bb, Thursday, 27 September 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago)
also, tim, i think weve talked about it before, but i l u v her satanic and still think its my second fav of that era (locale). im still trying to find some "psych" that has the swaggering cool and dark feel...piper does it to an end (and is my fav of that period)..but really..there is the end, bill wymans side record/project, but it doesnt match up..too mod/lounge...
and that chronic town ep, esp on cassette, is the best thing rem ever did. and i was once an rem true believer
hell, i have 3 camapri and sodas and little dinner n me..im a touch more sloppy than normal, even

Hmmm can someone speak to me of Mono, Panthers and Coliseum? Bcuz High On Fire show at Fancypants Hall Of Williamsburg is 20 friggin bucks...
― Jon Lewis, Thursday, 27 September 2007 20:15 (seventeen years ago)
don't know Coliseum
the other two are nothing like High on Fire, that's a pretty weird bill. Mono is Japanese post-rock, sort of mathy. Panthers is a brooklyn hard-rock band, they've put stuff out on Vice and Troubleman
― dmr, Thursday, 27 September 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
I think I can safely assume it's not a reunion of the italian pomp-prog Coliseum...

hey, anyone interested in buying some garage/noise (though not the noise associated with noiseboard) 7"s? i'd rather not take them to reckless, if i'm gonna sell them i'd prefer someone who wants them gets them. i know for a fact that half the stuff i've brought to the wicker park store never made it to the sales floor and was divvied up between the staff.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
reckless isnt buying as many rap promo cds as they used to. how am i supposed to unload da musicianz and wack TVT 'hyphy' and 'crunk' comps???
― deej, Thursday, 27 September 2007 23:02 (seventeen years ago)
well i need to get the hell out of my apartment so i'm taking some stuff to reckless tonight so i can go out for a couple of cocktails.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 27 September 2007 23:11 (seventeen years ago)
i tried to sell music for beer the other night and 70% of my stack got returned to me, then i saw a copy of donald byrd's 'love byrd' for 4.99 so i ended up just getting ten bucks for beer :(
― deej, Thursday, 27 September 2007 23:14 (seventeen years ago)
they always take all my vinyl but give me pennies on the dollar. i'm taking a short stack of seven inches and maybe 5 lps, that should be enough for a couple of beers and a pack of cigarettes.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 27 September 2007 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

The Comateens - Deal with It (I just got this and it took me a couple of listens but I like it. Unfortunately, there are like fifteen skips at the beginning of "Resist Her.") Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Canadian Capitol had the early Pink Floyd albums in print probably in the early '80s. I've been listening to the Canadian Capitol copy of this I bought used when I was sixteen for over twenty years. Sounds fuzzy and I think I'm going to buy the two disc version of the 40th anniversary release - the one without the book and just the stereo version of the album on one disc and the mono version on the other.) John Coltrane - Meditations Yoko Ono - "Walking on Thin Ice" I'm So Hollow - "Dreams to Fill the Vacuum" b/w "Distraction" single (From 1980. They were from Sheffield and are apparently in that Sheffield post-punk documentary. Vaguely Tubeway Army-ish, though the singer sounds more like the guy from Human League. Harder rocking than Tubeway Army with futuristic noisy synth and guitar stuff. I would like to hear their album, which is called Motion/Sound/Emotion, I think.) V/A - I Hate the Pop Group Debris - Static Disposal Bohannon's Greatest Disco Hits LP on Dakar V/A - The Up Another Octave Transmission (1981 comp of Orange County new wave bands. One side is "Tekno Rok" and the other is "Nu Rok." This is on Mutant Sounds.)
Also got a few good early '70s pop soul 45s by Honey Cone, the Stylistics, and Freda Payne.
