Michael White, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

i too would like to be an amtrak conductor tho i am moving to a practically-amtrak-less city.

hstencil, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

i thought eastern seabored subsidized flyover states amtrak

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

no the flyover states /diesel line amtrak costs them next to nothing to run because they don't own the track. eastern seaboard amtrak-trak is owned and maintained by them which is why it costs so much and shit is always broked

El Tomboto, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

some flyover states just don't have amtrak! they did open a indy-to-louisville route a few years ago in which the train can only go 25 MILES AN HOUR because the track's so bad. don't know if it still runs. other than that, closest amtrak city is cincy.

hstencil, Monday, 17 September 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

wait where does hstencil move?

river wolf, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

hstencil, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm leaning toward sideline reporter, though I only know Ally from her ILX posts (and know nothing about sports).

Do not recommend: Quality Assurance department in housewares company.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

if there is anything I have learned from reading pro bloggers output it's that there is no subject on earth that would not become nauseatingly tiresome if you are required to write about it 8 times or more every day. I don't know how ghost rider manages to attend some of the events he does with his subject matter and not get into bloody, spittle-laden fistfights every time.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

drunken, bloody, spittle-laden blogger - that could be the angle.

river wolf, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm 37 and not gay, but I like opera and shower too much attention on my tiny dog?

xpost

rw - wait when do you start school tho? next year? so there is time to get a 'proper' job?

i am at the point where i just want a short-term part-time job that doesn't make me think all that much and doesn't make me want to kill too many people. all of ally's options prob don't fit that.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Rrroby, life makes me want to kill people, I don't need a job for that. Hence the drinking.

Laurel, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

i don't start school for basically exactly one year. so i've got a year off to do whatever. this SOUNDS like a neat deal, but i'm broke and can't get jetting off to thailand (yet). the problem is that i am not qualified to do really anything in particular, but am "overqualified" to do menial shit (as in: i have been turned down for jobs on that basis already! i don't care! gimme money!).

river wolf, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

i mean god help me i'm responding to an ad for Greenpeace fundraisers

river wolf, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

Oh my aunt did that in Chicago a long time ago, don't do that.

Laurel, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

oh you totally have to make a resume that shows you are not overqualified - it is a game. i am working on this one. thankfully not being fully bilingual in this province does a lot to help me out on this one.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

^ sarcasm re: bilingualism lol

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Rrrobyn, maybe sign up for two or three temp agencies at once and see what happens. Even the most nightmare assignment will be over in days and something different will follow.

Let them know at the outset you don't want "temp-to-perm" though, only brief random engagements.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

RW I tried that when I was 21 and lasted less than a week. What a psychological battering THAT gig is!

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

river wolf, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

That's not a bad job, actually! One of bike girls worked there and was okay with it until something else came along. She got lots of food, too.

Laurel, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

Trader Joe's emps don't look very disgruntled, it's true.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

they're usually insanely gregarious to the point of kind of being uncomfortable.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

I still think you should do some P.R. type thing since you can make ILx interesting which shows mad skillz @ manipulating brains of jaded hipsters/internet stalkers. sideline reporter is decent but you'd need an ugly sweater and more hairspray.

bnw, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

you no longer need an ugly sweater, big stuffy looking overcoats in outlandish colors are also permitted

Peej, Thursday, 20 September 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

whole foods gives benefits and starts at 10$ an hr! And u can specialize in, like, wine or cuts of meat or vitamins or something too. i have a friend who works there, i need to get a reference. Also, 20% off all whole foods food.

and mmmmaybe i might buy food but probably not.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I only go to Whole Foods for that emergenC vitamin shit I'm addicted to. It's still cheaper at WF than anywhere else.

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I never go to whole foods because the (notably smaller) crowd at dean and deluca in georgetown is somehow more tolerable. more old money, less aspirational yuppies in their fucking alma mater sweatshirts? Also if I want teh booze I just walk across the street to the connecticut & 20th alco-mart.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

every time I go to a whole foods or a starbucks in DC it makes me think I could be a stand-up comic. I would just make narcissism-of-small-differences jokes about white yupster laptop dildos in a lewis black stylee.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

i go to dean & deluca sometimes because it's near my work. i can't afford to buy "groceries" there though, it's usually just like, 2 apples and israeli pita. i like fairway the most. also i've heard good things about the pathmark at atlantic center but have yet to go.

bell_labs, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

whole foods and trader joes are just wayyyy too crowded. i've only managed to buy something at the union square wf once, the other times i've walked in, felt overwhelmed, ran out in a panic.

bell_labs, Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

It panics me too. I endure it for the time necessary to get cheaper vitamin crack.

whole foods gives benefits and starts at 10$ an hr! And u can specialize in, like, wine or cuts of meat or vitamins or something too. i have a friend who works there, i need to get a reference. Also, 20% off all whole foods food.

when towga went back to school i took a 2nd job there and it sucked. the margin's they take are unfuckingbelievable. except for beer, they've found that people WILL NOT overpay for beer and will make an extra trip to save a buck, markup was between 5-9%. produce markups were criminal.

$10/hour is like a shitty job for a college student in a flyover state :/

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 20 September 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

jw, it's a grocery store, it's not like anyone there is planning on retiring at 40 because they work at whole foods.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 20 September 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe all the NYC whole foods employees are squatters?
