There is no point in trying this if you don't like the music. That said, I did make some regrettable purchases in the past for this reason, which is how I reached my current conclusion. (regrettable purchase: having to buy all that weed to make his Led Zeppelin tolerable)

rong on 2 levels:
1) buying 'all that weed' is never a regrettable purchase 2) weed does not make zeppelin 'tolerable' it makes them perfect

Last month, in the Times, the white folk rocker Devendra Banhart declared his admiration for R. Kelly’s new R. & B. album “Double Up.” Thirty years ago, Banhart might have attempted to imitate R. Kelly’s perverse and feather-light soul. Now he’s just a fan.

A few years ago, on his blog, the white folk rocker John Darnielle declared his admiration for R. Kelly’s new R. & B. single “Ignition.” Thirty years ago, Darnielle might have attempted to imitate R. Kelly’s perverse and feather-light soul. Now he’s just a fan.

that's the second time that's been mentioned here. Maybe I haven't heard enough Japanther. I used to see them live when they started playing around NY and it never did much for me. I really don't have much interest in a lot of the bands working various post-no wave revival skronk/noise craziness, and I like No Age's balance between the utterly accessible and often beautiful ambient partts, and the also utterly accessible and totally catchy minimalist hardcore punk riffing.

Not to call them shark-jumpers, but two things that hurt R&B in a big way in the very early '80s were the resegregation of Top 40 radio and the prodcution styles of Luther Vandross and Narada Michael Walden.

After the band dropped Elektra Records, Spacehog signed with upstart label Artemis Records and released its third album, The Hogyssey, on April 10, 2001. The album continued the band's neo-glam approach and featured the singles "I Want To Live" and "At Least I Got Laid", as well as a funkified version of Richard Strauss's "Also sprach Zarathustra".

How beautiful do the words have 2 be Before they conquer every heart? How will U know if I'm even in the right key If U make me stop before I start?
CHORUS: If I came back as a dolphin Would U listen 2 me then? Would U let me be your friend? Would U let me in? U can cut off all my fins But 2 your ways I will not bend I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim And I'll come back again as a dolphin
Why does my brother have 2 go hungry When U told him there was food 4 all? This is the man that stands next 2 the man That stands 2 catch U when U fall (Oh!)
CHORUS
If I'm under water, will U find me? (Find me {x4}) Will U shine a light and try 2 guide me? It's happened before, I've knocked on your door But U wouldn't let me in
How beautiful do the words have 2 be Before they conquer every heart? (Oh!)
If I came back as a dolphin Would U listen 2 me then? Would U let me be your friend? Would U let me in? U can cut off all my fins But 2 your ways I will not bend I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim Come back in the end as a dolphin (Oh) (I'll come back, baby) (Let me in, let me in) As a dolphin (Be my friend) Dolphin (Yeah, yeah)
Dolphin As a dolphin As a dolphin As a dolphin

dude you can't be more than like 2 years older than me, don't pull that generation gap shit! anyway early-mid 90's modern rock radio played a shitload of New Order, and "Blue Monday" was always my least favorite of their songs, before any tainting by Orgy (or Rihanna).
as far as I can tell the biggest 90's soundtrack "Blue Monday" was on is The Wedding Singer lol

the alternative to your tastes being tainted by orgy is that you're just RONG about the song, sorry I gave the benefit of the doubt.

Tarantino does this all the time, inserting long stretches of innocuous conversational dialogue - it ratchets up the tension because the viewer is both being made to think of the characters as normal, average boring people while at the same time eagerly anticipating the conversation's end to get to the "action". It makes the punctuated scenes of violence more surprising and more engaging. Its called pacing.

i was SO disappointed with the senor coconut stuff. led to believe it was a BAND that played latin instruments - that would have been good.NO it is blatantly sequenced geek tribute IDM with a few latin touches thrown in - no real instruments. the marimba and vibraphone sound totally digital equal temperament tuning etc. "home computer" is groovy as fk, yes, but the rest of it is like listening to a green jelly / gwar album. looks funny. not funny. geeez 'n' gosh however is the absolute bollocks AMAZING microhouse w/ v subtle gospel samples. "nobody knows" absolutely rollicking good stuff. -- bob snoom, Sunday, July 28, 2002 8:00 PM (5 years ago) Bookmark Link

I have never been able to listen to a Byrds' album in its entirety. "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" in particular is totally boring. I've never understood it's "masterpiece" status - it sounds identical to any number of country albums from the same period. -- Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, October 13, 2004 10:24 PM (3 years ago) Bookmark Link

I would probably vote indie, a lot because of the fans, but it's been stuck together with alternative, of which there is a lot that I like. That being said, I've pretty much come to the conclusion at this point that there is good stuff in every genre, and it's unfair to dismiss things out of hand, but honestly (and I realize this isn't going to be a popular opinion), I wouldn't be sad at all if I never heard a hip-hop song again.

"Native New Yorker" slams on the breaks of any disco comp (e.g. Rhino's Disco Queens: The '70s). That's cuz it's really TV theme music and even in that realm, it pales beside the likes of Good Times or Wonder Woman. If "Native New Yorker" is disco, then so is, oh I don't know, the theme from The Greatest American Hero (forget the actual title - "Believe or not I'm walking on air" blech!). (And both songs might be disco in some time/space continuum not my own.)

most of the really poppy disco was in fact pretty terrible, it was the underground stuff stuff that was mostly decent. by the time the more r+b sounding boogie came into being, it was pretty good all around, both the poppy stuff and the underground stuff. but i definitely see a difference in the "integrity" of the two styles, much disco was made as a cash in while boogie was kind of just an extension of soul music which was always okay with being popular but i dont think it was its primary objective.

Austin's claim to anything is pretty shaky, imo. There's no such thing as a native, nary a single style of music was "born" there, its claims to the contrary range between technically untrue to ludicrous, and hoo boy do Austinites get defensive when you point this out. Austin's not any kind of Music Capital, not an oasis of liberalism, it's just a fucking college town. With a HUGE chip on its shoulder.

The band's general sound is that of a grungey electric guitar dirge, angry and sullen, not unlike a cross between a slowed down Killing Joke and Lou Reed's Street Hassle.

oh, and yes! MBV! MBV are the Great act that emerged from indie pop - that is clear, why couldn't I see it before! They were indie pop, more clearly and purely than any of the other acts I've just mentioned - and they became (very widely accepted as) Great (and in a way had always been great). So they are the proof that it can happen.

Britpop was like 60s psych pop, 70s symphonic rock, the more subtle 70s glam rock and 80s new romantics/synthpop in that it didn't want to choose between commerse and art. It say "Yes, please" to both. Just like The Beatles, Yes, David Bowie and Human League had done previously.

And as much as I freaking love NEU! and realise that the Stereolab track is a total cop of Hallogallo - I do actually prefer Jenny Ondioline because the only way that Hallogallo could POSSIBLY be any better would be if they stuck some icy cool female harmony vocals over the top and lo and behold... JENNY ONDIOLINE is the winner.

To Omar? I really thought it was practically their exclusive domain. Except I had a roomate last year who watched a buttload of M*A*S*H DVD sets on her laptop all by herself, despite having a boyfriend, but she took forever doing it, I guess, one or two episodes at a time. Despite that it was sort of a depressing activity for her to be doing. Although we didn't have TV, not even an antenna.

tbf, i just didn't categorise AD or 30 Rock as sitcoms. I really don't know why. I don't like CYE, without prejudice to how 'good' it is.
Basically I'm saying Friends is better that 2 1/2 men, HIMYM, that really shitty one about science nerds and anything that's been offered as a successor to 'Friends'- I don't think the three shows mentioned are that.

Look if we want to talk about crooning and golden voices than let's have a real benchmark like Roy Orbison. That guy could sing a hell of a lot better than Sinatra. I mean Sinatra became a legend primarily because of his branding (rat pack) and his good looks (ol' blue eyes)... I just can't get how someone would consider him to have one of the greatest voices.

Also Sinatra is pretty widely considered not to have a traditionally "great" singing voice, regardless of what one thinks of his stylings. Orbison otoh is considered one of the great pop voices.
― Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago)
the young sinatra's voice is so sweet, v different from the rat pack years (altho he could still be sensitive)orbison was otherwordly and great, i'd still take sinatra but it wouldn't occur to me to compare
― buzza, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago)
loooooool "traditionally great singing voice" and "great pop voices" are totally different standards. sinatra is totally one of the great pop voices.
― BIG HII'M aka the teendriver (crüt), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:25 (fourteen years ago)
take billie holliday, pussy, and jazz out of frank sinatra add mario lanza, country, and loserdom and you have roy orbison. orbison was nearly as much a geek for greaseball faux opera melodramatic pop as elvis and sinatra was king of that shit.
― balls, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:27 (fourteen years ago)
Well I worded it badly. Orbison is known for his voice in terms of more traditional measures of singing ability - range, clarity, pitch, etc. Sinatra was a much more limited vocalist with a lot of style. They're totally different kinds of singers and their music is totally different and I don't really find it weird that someone would like one and not the other.
― Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:29 (fourteen years ago)
how the fuck was orbison's range impressive????

― balls, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
His range was like 3-4 octaves
― Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:13 (fourteen years ago)
I mean in In Dreams alone he spans like 2.5 octaves and hits a high C - a slightly weird one, but he hits a pretty clear one in Only the Lonely.
― Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

roy's range is breathtaking and capable of conveying tragic emotion but jesus x what sinatra did w/phrasing was revolutionary & influential (even though he loathed R&R).

Orbison is known for his voice in terms of more traditional measures of singing ability - range, clarity, pitch, etc. Sinatra was a much more limited vocalist with a lot of style.
If you care anything at all about singing, then you would have noticed Sinatra's clarity and pitch. It might be apocryphal, but the story that Miles used to model the pitch of his trumpet playing on Sinatra's singing totally makes sense.

Eh...inspired moments, but of all the episodes I've seen, only one or two things really struck me as truly inspired. Their biggest problem seems to be a lack of knowing when to stop a sketch, along with telegraphing the joke from a mile away in some cases.

Motown was better than Stax, which was just a bunch of down-home grunting. Stax fans always point to the 'integrated nature' of their label - i.e., trailer trash playing cartoon 'soulful' riffs, because they weren't good enough to be straight country. (Ask Rufus Thomas what he thought of Steve Cropper, who went on to be in the Blues Brothers, which is Stax's only legacy, unless Springsteen/Dave Marsh- rock counts. Wow.) And if Motown was a 'factory', makes for better music than a community-outreach project. How many Motown songs are remembered today versus how many Stax? I rest my case, and at least the crash brought Otis Redding relief from the bowel condition that caused him to howl in pain all the time. (What kind of dullard takes a song called "Try a Little Tenderness" and sings it like the drill sergeant in 'Full Metal Jacket'?)
