i'm finally getting around to listening to all the metal stuff that has accumulated in the last month. reviewed some reissues/boxed sets on the Metal Mind label for Filthy Phil Freeman (He is the new editor in chief at Metal Edge magazine) and they were a ton of fun. Paradox, Znowhite, Defiance, Artillery (4 discs!). Also just got a bunch of cool stuff from the Autumn Wind label. They put out lots of noise/neofolk/neoclassical/industrial/metal CDs. Vomit Orchestra, 20.SV, Kaniba, Black Seas Of Infinity, Arbeit, Drear. I think I'm gonna feature the label in Decibel next month. I do a different label every month. If you know of any crazy labels that put out lots of stuff, let me know. I need a new one every month. Doesn't have to be strictly metal. I'd like to feature some more crazy/noise labels too in the future. I review anywhere from 5 to 10 releases in each feature.

recent stuff i'm getting around to:

mos generator - songs for future gods (small stone)

greenleaf - agents of ahriman (small stone)

krohm - the haunting presence (moribund)

dodsferd - cursing your will to live (moribund)

satan's host - burning the born again...(a new philosphy) (moribund)

atreyu - lead sails paper anchor (hollywood)

wolfpack unleashed - anthems of resistance (napalm)

helloween - gambling with the devil (spv)

diabolic force - old school attack (no colours)

nargaroth - semper fidelis (no colours)

satanic warmaster - revelation (no colours)

orenda - the funeral (no colours)

alastor - noble north (no colours)

those who bring the torture - s/t (no colours)

sodom - the final sign of evil (spv)

vreid - i krig (candlelight)

motorhead - better motorhead than dead - live at hammersmith (spv)

axel rudi pell - diamonds unlocked (spv)

moonspell - under satanae (spv)

limbonic art - legacy of evil (candlelight)

monster magnet - 4-way diablo (spv)

coffins/the arm and sword of a bastard god (20 buck spin)

abacinate/godrot - split cd (epitomite)

the foreshadowing - days of nothing (candlelight)

sear bliss - the arcane odyssey (candlelight)

poolside at the flamingo - this will end badly...(epitomite)

october falls - the streams of the end (debemur morti)

necromessiah - antiklerical terroristik death squad (blasphemous underground)

skitzo - five point containment (open grave)

exterminance - vomiting the trinity (open grave)

more candlelight stuff: knights of the abyss, gorefest, gentlemans pistols, tulus

motorhead - stage fright dvd (spv)

The only Wim Mertens I know is the soundtrack to Belly Of An Architect, and only due to watching Belly Of An Architect multiple times. It didn't make much of an impression, but maybe there Mertens was trying to sound like Michael Nyman, Greenaway's regular musical foil at the time.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Most of Mertens stuff sounds like Nyman, but some of it is still fun.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I used to <3 Nyman v much. Starting somewhere around The Piano he got all syrupy though. But Drowning By Numbers, The Cook The Thief... and Draughtsman's Contract still rule.

i need a better copy of the frank wright on actuel; it got dropped and there's a HUGE gash in the b-side that tics for probably 10 minutes. it was free, but ya know... i could also use a better copy of the frank wright on ESP with the reddish cover. the quintet(?) record, i think. it has some annoying pops and surface noise.

i love supermax. i've got love machine, fly w/me and world of today on mp3. i love everything i've heard. to me he is the epitomy of the beardo/cosmic sound. german, slow disco beats, tribal drums, spaced out production, songs about marijuana. this is the first of his records i've owned and it just sounds so amazing played loud.

what do you think of that will powers? weird record, eh?

jaxon, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

hah i dig it a lot actually ... the first and last songs are my favorite tracks, plus the one about knowing when to kiss. I heard nile rodgers was actually involved in this record?

i'll definitely have to check out the supermax lp ... i actually heard 'love machine' cuz i picked up this 2x lp set of kraut disco, mostly on the strength of 'get on the funk train'

deej, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

Sun Ra - Sounds of Joy
Sound Forms for Piano - Cage/Cowell/Nancarrow/Johnston
Really Red - Crowd Control (from Killed By Death #2)
"Let's Breed" Throbbing Lobster compilation. All awesome, but Not Too Late by the Outlets (in particular) is so much fun. Apparently they became the Dropkick Murphy's, who may not have sucked at one point.

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

there was a Really Red comp Cd that's all pretty awesome.

what a record! i'm in love with it.

2nd best beardo album of the day - lee ritenour - friendship

very cool. and yes i have the jvc direct to disc japanese pressing with obi and lyrics sheet and large color poster of lee ritenour. "samurai night fever" is hot.

you don't know how many times i've picked this album up and put it back. kinda bummed i don't actually own it. i just got her George Duke produced album from 79 "Carry On". it's really nice.

John Justen, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

I've picked up Butterfly Dreams once or twice too and failed to buy it. It's got that sample from Exit Planet Dust.

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

the opener on butterfly dreams, "dr.jive(part 1)", will tear your head off. all warp speed spaced out tribal jungle jam. awesome!

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

oh and "dr.jive(part 2)" has a killer acid rock guitar solo on it. that's on the second side. basically the album is just very cool and spacey and has lots of joe henderson on it. which is cool by me. dr. jive (1 OR 2) is definitely going on any mix i make in the future.

Ian, waht is that Hurley ? new?
Yeah, it's a new one.

Maurice McIntyre - Humility in the Light of Creator
This is great. So is another record of his, "Forces & Feelings." The vocals on F&F are a little more subdued, and the playing is just as great.

Listening:
Os Mutantes s/t
Jack Rose s/t
Geoff Mullen - Armory Radio (I bet Big Vic would like this. Droney but with some forward momentum and v v pretty. Tapes, guitars, radios, finger pianos etc.)
Listened to the new Hototogisu & new Pengo on Nashazphone; both are alright. I might like the Pengo more, it's got a lot more variety.
george cromarty - grass roots guitar
excepter - alternation
roscoe mitchell sextet - sound
wendell harrison - an evening with the devil

ian, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

i have Forces & Feelings too, but put a gnarly gnash on one side right when i got it :(. i remember it being a lot more mellow overall and wasn't feeling it. i'll have to pull it out again. i have a third album that was way less spiritual and i don't remember liking it at all

jaxon, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

I love both those Kalaparusha records on Delmark. and the Muhal Richards Abrams records. and the J.B. Hutto and the Hawks record on Delmark that Kalaparusha plays on! All that old Delmark AACM-related stuff is essential, and the vinyl sounds great. In those nice thick cardboard covers, mmmm.

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

My Maurice McIntyre LP is on Delmark, but I think it's a French press, maybe? It's got a lovely solid green sleeve with a few slashes of black paint across it.

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Thursday, 4 October 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

traded in promo stuff and got new vinyl: angel of light 2lp, home schooled: the ABCs of kid soul comp 2lp numero group thing, niger guitar group sublime frequencies thing.

and some dollar records: mark IV single (patrick adams) on tuff city. some weird electronic/newwave/industrial album from 1986 by a group called Free World. (On vinyl siding records in Jewett City, Connecticut!! i'm from ct and i've never heard of these dudes. sounds like they were definite cabaret voltaire fans. or tuxedomoon fans. it's not great and the copy is pretty beat, but i just wanted to hear it.)also a weird album from 1974 by brian protheroe. beatlesy, nilssony, oddball sing/song stuff. not horrible though. it definitely has its moments.

scott seward, Thursday, 4 October 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Brian Protheroe, is that the one with "Pinball" on it? I like that track, it was on one of those Velvet Tinmine / Zig Zag Soft Rock / whatever compilations

lol Protheroe wiki: He is cast in the (non-singing) role of Saruman in the 2007 stage musical production of Lord Of The Rings.

dudes, that allez-allez italian soundtrack mix upthread is amazing. like seriously. if you're into that, i grabbed the helliocentrics album recently and it's kinda like it. it's got malcolm catto on drums. sounds like everything on the dusty fingers comps. really atmospheric, soundtracky noizes and heavy, ridiculously funky drums.

also heard the Boris with Michio Kurihara "Rainbow" disc in a record store and was floored. it's pretty amazing. singer sounds like Damo.

jaxon, Thursday, 4 October 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

that franco falsini is cool too, thx to trip maker for putting that up

I'm looking forward to the new Sunburned Hand of the Man. seems a lot more focused than their usual .... less gnarly pointless shit, more hippie krautrock (at least the ones I've heard so far, mainly "Nice Butterfly Mask")

yeah, the Boris/Kurihara *is* great .. the second song sounds like Ege Bamyasi. and I am no Boris fan -- bought it for the Kurihara -- but it's a real nice record.

saw them together live this past Sunday .. it was a treat. Still don't really "get" the whole Boris thing though. I loved the songs from Rainbow but that's the only record that I know. The other stuff they played sounded fine but no different from Shizuka or older Hanadensha or any number of other Japanese bands from a decade or so ago. They were *good* (especially with the addition of Kurihara), I just didn't see what inspires the rabid fandom

, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

wow. that ethno beats comp looks great. PILI PILI! the kinda stuff i was looking for here s/d: Afro-Electric music

jaxon, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Kasso Walkman was my second ever italo purchase and I only ever played Walkman and Key West. Then a few years later I heard a friend play One More Round and it blew me away and I was like "what is that?" then I realized I owned it! Then I forgot I owned it. Then last week I was listening to a Ron Hardy mix and he played it and I recognized it so I emailed famous dance music producer "what was that song?" so I could find it and he told me and I went on ebay to find it. Then I remembered I owned it all along. I promptly came home and played it 7 times in a row.

dan selzer, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

ha. nice story. i had a similar experience last week with the song Going back to my Roots. heard the richie havens version a few weeks ago online. didn't think much of it. heard another version (i think the original Lamont Dozier version) in american apparel a few days ago. wrote down the lyrics to find out what it was. my friend randomly sent me an mp3 of the Odyssey version and i realized i owned the record already. listened to it 7 times in a row.

jaxon, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

it blew me away and I was like "what is that?" then I realized I owned it!

the Lamont Dozier version is incredible!!! the guy at my local record spot put me on to it and he was selling the 12" for $30 and I was debating paying that much just for a 12" ... then i checked ebay and it was at $31 + 6.50 shipping ... i downloaded it, was like "fuck it this song is amazing" and by the time i got back to the shop it had sold :(

deej, Friday, 5 October 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

having listened to it now,

Jack 'N' Chill - Beatin' The Heat (122 BPM In The Shade)
Code 61 - Drop The Deal (Original Ethnic Version)

^ those are the only weak tracks on the Ethno Beats comp. (Beatin' The Heat is ok too if you like dorky morricone samples.) its safe to buy this! preferably on cd, the vinyl is mastered kinda quietly.

scott seward, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

it's about the only decent new turntable i could afford. or that maria can afford. or that we can afford. right now. she bought it for me for my birthday. it's simple. it sounds good. hopefully, that will be it. i just want one turntable that will last me. i was getting kinda sick of picking up kinda cool used turntables at thrift stores and then finding out that they had some weird little thing about them that would drive me batty.

scott seward, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just pretty psyched in general, I'm liking a lot of new stuff. After a few years of post-no wave wankery it seems like every band is a cross between the Urinals and Cabaret Voltaire writing noisy, droney 2 minute pop songs. Count me in.

This morning Jakob Ullmann's "A Catalogue of Sounds". Really astounding screech science for the 21st century -- the violins are pared down to the whisper end of the spectrum but there is an incredible sense of articulation to it all.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

I like the second Mashmakhan record! It's not as wound-up as that first one. It's mellow. And it sounded good yesterday -- fit really well as more than one song mentions "Sunday afternoon", and it was Sunday afternoon, and the weather outside looked kinda like the cover (my favorite kind of weather, btw)

jaxon, Sunday, 28 October 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

today i bought:

jaques higlen - bbh 75 (i've got his acid folk cd w/brigette fontaine's number one areski, but this is a rad funky rock album.
fern kinney - groove me 12" (cover of the king floyd/blues brothers track)
patrick cowley - menergy LP

and i FINALLY found a vinyl copy of the henske & yester "farwell aldebaran" album. for only 20$ (have seen it for 80), but it's a bit scratched up. it sounds great though.

jaxon, Sunday, 28 October 2007 06:23 (eighteen years ago)

oooh, farewell aldeberan is great. my copy is also a bit beat up, but sounds decent for the most part.

yes. i come across it all the time. i don't know why it's so common in nyc. one time you said it was a $30+ wall record and i countered it was strictly a 50 cents flea market thing. i checked it out after that and you were right. next one i find i'll mail out to you gratis.

Hey Milton give a listen to Igor Kipnis playing Scarlatti sometime, he's the fucking man when it comes to this repertoire. There's a super cheap budget EMI reissue. Harpsichord, o'course.
