Miss Eva G posed for me in her SOMA loft, dressed in her own fabulous steampunk finery, with an antique crossbow she brought back from China. The painting took several sittings with Miss E and then many hours of work painting in the detailed background. She is defending early implements of the computer revolution, Jacquard punch cards and IBM cards, a CDV of Ada Byron, and Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine No. 2. An apple core represents Turing, eaten up by the intolerance of his era. Also prominently displayed are some wonderful modern creations- The Steampunk Laptop by Datamancer and the Steampunk Flatpanel and Keyboard by Jake Von Slatt- who were kind enough to allow me use their work in the painting. The packet-sniffing rat under the desk is a nod to the EFF’s most recent victory; the EFF logo appears among the luggage stickers on the trunk. I added the bullet shells at the last minute when I learned that Miss E. is a crack shot.

My mom is seriously into Victorian culture and art. So I told her about the steampunks in Brooklyn. She was kind of sad that i wasn't dressing up and going to these shindigs. It was really difficult for me to explain exactly why these people are not exactly in my circle of friends.
The best I could come up with is "They're a lot like goths and there's probably absinthe" and "I lack the dedication to get dressed up before I go somewhere"

From this nytimes crap:
“There seems to be this sort of perfect storm of interest in steampunk right now,” Mr. von Slatt said. “If you go to Google Trends and track the number of times it is mentioned, the curve is almost algorithmic from a year and a half ago.” (At this writing, Google cites 1.9 million references.)

people have rediscovered victorian costume elements before and will do so again, but it's the fetishistic technology piece of this subculture that i don't fully get. to me it seems like some regressive reaction to a world where technology is becoming increasingly wireless, microscopic, & intangible -- yearning for a gaslit retro-fantasy aesthetic without actually forsaking any modern conveniences.

poor funny-voiced camera guy
Though Steampunk’s artisanal outputs have stolen much of the mainstream limelight so far, there is a whole other creative side to the scene that has received little attention in comparison. Countless bands have formed, filing their music under the Steampunk genre or citing Victorian fantasy as a muse. One of them, Vernian Process, is the solo project of San Francisco–based Joshua Pfieffer. A true testament to the notion of the ambitious dabbler, Pfieffer has no musical training, and writes songs with the aid of basic audio-production software. “The atmosphere is actually more important to me than writing good hooks, or melodic structure,” he says of his music, which he makes free to download. “I feel that what I do represents the genre as I would like it to sound.”

TransWarp's 256K RAM is effectively divided into four 64K banks. When you power-up your Apple with TransWarp installed, all of the ROM from $D000 through $FFFF is copied into one of the high-speed RAM banks. The rest of this bank is not used. A second bank is used in place of the motherboard RAM. The third and fourth banks are used in place of the first and second banks of AUXMEM, if you have a RAM card such as RAMWORKS installed in the AUX slot. If you have a large RAMWORKS in the auxiliary slot of a //e, any additional banks beyond two will still be usable but at "only" 1 MHz.[1]

Steampunk’s key lessons are not about the past. They are about the instability and obsolescence of our own times. A host of objects and services that we see each day all around us are not sustainable. They will surely vanish, just as “Gone With the Wind” like Scarlett O’Hara’s evil slave-based economy. Once they’re gone, they’ll seem every bit as weird and archaic as top hats, crinolines, magic lanterns, clockwork automatons, absinthe, walking-sticks and paper-scrolled player pianos.

I'd like to start a thread about an artistic movement that shows a lot of ideals from White culture, in terms of hope and creativity.
It's called Steampunk. Steampunk is an aesthetic that takes modern technology and invades the past with it. Steam (but not always) used as the main power source. Jules Verne and HG Wells really wrote the founding material for this sort of stuff. Imagine a Victorian era with analog computers that ran on steam power. Just so people understand - in case I'm not representing it well - here's a few films that show the art form:
League of Extraordinary Gentleman Treasure Planet Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow Van Helsing City of Lost Children The Golden Compass The Final Cut
It's doesn't always have to be Victorian Era, I've seen stuff that looked like it was from the 1930's. It's ways of imagining how they could have accomplished our technology back then.
check out steampunkmagazine.com or steampunkworkshop.com
There's also a cute little online game called Dirk Valentine at nitrogame.com
All of this fiction and escapism relies on White Western culture being unlimited in its creativity and uninhibited by the constraints of time. It's a happier alternative to the dark dystopias of cyberpunk.
So if there are fans of this genre - games, movies, literature or art than please share some insights and reviews. This thread will also be a great place to post pictures of this type of artwork.
Thanks, and Enjoy!
