In my first year at Uni there was a Goth in our house who used to play "Since Yesterday" in his room on a loop for hours at a time, so I haven't much felt like hearing it since then.

As Tibet tells it he hasn't thought of Crowley as credible since sometime in the mid 80s.

Obv for some time he's been a convinced xtian, though one with his own unique brew.

FWIW i have no patience for Crowley as errr "thinker"... but I love hearing about the feuds, antics and shenanigans of him & his peers of the time.

autobiography of aleister crowley is one of my fave pieces of "get fucked up and open to a random page" literature.

so i've been listening to this Indian Summer album and it's one of those albums that psych/prog heads always say nice things about, but it doesn't do much for me. came out on rca/neon in 1970. i dunno, it's kinda dreary. my copy cost me like two bucks so all is well. but meanwhile i've been digging the first album by ROSS on RSO from the 70's a bunch. cool funky prog with even some disco action on it. total beardo stuff. they put out two records. the s/t one and one called the pit & the pendulum. they both have great covers. you can't miss them. buy them both. turns out, dude from indian summer was totally in ross too. bob jackson. he was in entwistle's rigor mortis band too. and later in a latter-day badfinger (and i've been enjoying the latter-day badfinger album Airwaves lately, don't know if bob is on that one). anyway, score one for ROSS, but not even a mellotron and a cool KEEF cover can save the Indian Summer album. (i mean, it's not TERRIBLE. just kinda dreary and plodding. but not plodding in a good way. or maybe i just need to get stoned and listen.)

yeah man, i listened to it just the other weekend on the trip to RI! it rocks. i have picked up a couple grifters singles since you first loaned it to me.

rad. everything up to + including "ain't my lookout" is worth hearing. the only one I don't like as much is the last one on Sub Pop before they broke up (full blown possession)

i used to have that "ain't my lookout" cd. musta sold it. was it sort of red red meat, pavement, archers of loafy?

yeah that's them .... maybe not like the archers so much. but yeah Red Red Meat is pretty similar.

their best are "one sock missing" (the one I gave ian) and "crappin' you negative"

their bass player showed up on the grifter thread on ILM a couple months ago, me and mr. que and a few other ppl bullshitted with him for a couple days. pretty funny. they were huge at my college radio station.

i saw the grifters play to a half full empty bottle a couple months before i moved here. it may have been a day show at that? i can't remember, it was a different era.

the people that ran (run?) the empty bottle were from mizzou too (before my time, tho ... met one of em years later)

Got this Baby Grandmothers cd in Chicago over the weekend. Thanks for recommending it, Ian. Shit is DEEP. That was all I got, though. I have no money for records right now. Cave (a band I am in) has an lp being co-released by Southern (longtime Chicago based indie distro) and Permanent (old friends with a new store in Chicago) and I got a promo cd version of that while taking a short tour of their warehouse. Oh yeah, I got this Peter Walker cdr, 2nd poem to Karmela. I saw him play and it was incredible. He's a total bro. We had a show the night Charalambides played, though. Bummer. But I've seen em before.

scott, did the record store on your island get the Dog Faced Hermans "Mental Blocks..." reissue on LP? I like XNoBBQX but i can understand the ambivalence. I like it. It's kinda free rock, free noise. A friend of mine called it "like watching a really good rehearsal."

we bought a dog faced hermans reissue last year i think. or maybe it was this year. on some tiny label. maria loves them. i mean, so do i, but we share da luv. anyway, i think that was the one.

one of the greatest live performances i've ever seen. dog faced hermans. it was a religious experience. bunnybrains/dog faced hermans/sebadoh at the troc in philly. i always thought it was cool of lou to have opening acts that were often a way better live experience than sebadoh. (got no hate for sebadoh. just never really listened to them. and live they never thrilled me.)

the first song on that clockcleaner album sounds like bauhaus! i love bauhaus! they are from philly, right? i wonder if they were tapping the vein fans. or executive slacks fans. or little gentlemen fans.

yeah i don't know maybe they are really different live, a bunch of people hyped them up to me and they just seemed kind of like pretty normal i guess,not bad just not what i was expecting.

the record is good. nothing you or i haven't heard before.

I just want to jump in and say The Fire Engines Hungry Beat cd on Acute is one of my favorite things of the year. I found a 12" at the community station with "Candyskin" and "Meat Whiplash" and some stuff from their mini-lp and went pretty crazy for it. The record still had all the Fast Product promo copy in it, too. I love finding old records at the station with the promo sheets still in them. My girlfriend bought the reissue for me a couple weeks later. So good!

"There is no shortage of dramatic footnotes tied to these bands: A TROIS DAN LES WC dissolved when member Janine dropped dead on stage during the first show of their 1984 tour. VISIBLE lost their traction with the public when they released their album in Braille, a graphic design blunder that rendered their album nearly invisible to the record-buyers. CKC were unable to soundcheck for their live premiere at legendary club Golf-Drouot due to the onsite filming of the classic Sophie Marceau film "La Boum." VISITORS DU SOIR held their band practices in a cave. MARIE MOOR hooked up romantically and musically with tenor saxophone player and film composer Barney Wilen (collaborator with Miles Davis on 1957's Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud, Roger Vadim's Les Liasons Dangeureuse) and started the 4 AS label together. i keep feeling the pressure to buy a jay reatard album. i had no idea who the hell he was until i picked up a copy of maximum rock & roll and everyone who writes for the mag had him in their top ten and then i heard about him all the time. how could he not exist for me for so long and then be everywhere? i'm suspicious. plus, bloody dwarves girls beats bloody dude any day. but everyone really seems to love it. maybe i should give in. i gave in on the white stripes. good thing too cuz i made good money off of that vinyl years later.

i liked it! i did give in to ilm hype there. plus the double vinyl looked nice. i still don't think i've listened to the whole thing though. i really liked the first record a lot when i got it. very pretty. and the production doesn't bother me. it breathes and has life. not like some horrible boring rick rubin corpse prop-up.

jay also mastered a 7" for my friends and i think it's the definition of "polishing a turd". good songs but the guy who recorded them didn't know what to do with them.

hi Scott I wouldn't say I am a massive Big & Rich fan but I did love that first album, mainly for those amazing close harmony vocals they rocked on basically every tune! It really hits the spot, there's not enough of it around (that I hear, anyway), but yeah I also failed to keep up with them. Never heard any of the follow-ups. ALthough I *did* buy both the 1st and the 2nd Gretchen Wilson albums ... and I though her 2nd one was awesome. There is a song on there that totally sounds like the best Heart song they never recorded. I did not ever hear her 3rd alb though.

and btw thanks for that Wolfgang's Vault pointer .. nice show!! That's the only version I've seen of "Hoochie Coochie Man" (and I own like 10 bootlegs) -- totally cool. I confess I've been purposefully avoiding that site because I did not want to get sucked in. Too much music I still have sitting around here.
