i love both the Savage Grace albums .. but then I'm a sucker for anything from that Detroit scene

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 November 2007 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I knew that Plant/Krauss thing was gonna be on vinyl .. I bought the CD the day it was released assuming there would be no vinyl. Then again it's another one of those 2lp deals which is annoying. oh well. It's tough to guess what what'll get a release.. Guess I gotta try to research these things. Not like that would've helped with the Dead C album .. that REALLY pissed me off: they release the vinyl NOW?? plus the 2lp actually has an extra track. grrr.

I looooove the Thunder Perfect Mind-and-later era of C93. I want to see them live so goddamn bad.

I'd say the two biggest new favorites I came to in the last 5 years were C93 and Blue Oyster Cult. Indicating an increasing craving for mystical bullshit as I get older.

I don't think he's doing outright Crowley-worshiping so much as playing with similar ideas. But I find his voice is sometimes too much on the newer stuff.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

In my first year at Uni there was a Goth in our house who used to play "Since Yesterday" in his room on a loop for hours at a time, so I haven't much felt like hearing it since then.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

As Tibet tells it he hasn't thought of Crowley as credible since sometime in the mid 80s.

Obv for some time he's been a convinced xtian, though one with his own unique brew.

Jon Lewis, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

FWIW i have no patience for Crowley as errr "thinker"... but I love hearing about the feuds, antics and shenanigans of him & his peers of the time.

ian I don't really, but if I get a copy of planet boomerang I will then learn how to digitise LPs especially for the occasion. That's my favorite version of Space Prophet Dogon on there and I haven't heard in in like 12 years.

Jon Lewis, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

i don't have the energy or enthusiasm to rip the whole double LP, but i could perhaps be coaxed to bring it to work tomorrow and digitise Dogon.
Or if you have a tape player...

ian, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Dude if you have the gumption to digitise that one track I will... figure out something awesome to give you. Or buy you a fine meat dinner.

the kate bush version of sexual healing: awesome.

i will try to! i still owe M4rk Pr1ndle a tape of exotica on $5 a day/folksongs of the rich & evil.

ian, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

OH FUCK OH FUCK do you by chance have the Multiple Hallucinations Of An Assassin cassette? The performance of the title track on there is one of the most incredible things they ever recorded, dwarfing the version on the Bright Surroundings Dark Beginnings LP. But my limewired MP3 of it is full of weirdo digital glitches.

Damon & Naomi - More Sad Hits (only album by them I really love .. but it's real real good)
Nashville West (sometimes I think C White is almost too good ... something a little robotic about his playing in a context like this)
American Music Club - United Kingdom (super songs and production)
J. Geils Band - Monkey Island (phenomenal record from start to finish .. their best? It's hard to argue against 'Nightmares', but...)

so i've been listening to this Indian Summer album and it's one of those albums that psych/prog heads always say nice things about, but it doesn't do much for me. came out on rca/neon in 1970. i dunno, it's kinda dreary. my copy cost me like two bucks so all is well. but meanwhile i've been digging the first album by ROSS on RSO from the 70's a bunch. cool funky prog with even some disco action on it. total beardo stuff. they put out two records. the s/t one and one called the pit & the pendulum. they both have great covers. you can't miss them. buy them both. turns out, dude from indian summer was totally in ross too. bob jackson. he was in entwistle's rigor mortis band too. and later in a latter-day badfinger (and i've been enjoying the latter-day badfinger album Airwaves lately, don't know if bob is on that one). anyway, score one for ROSS, but not even a mellotron and a cool KEEF cover can save the Indian Summer album. (i mean, it's not TERRIBLE. just kinda dreary and plodding. but not plodding in a good way. or maybe i just need to get stoned and listen.)

finally got around to listening to farewell aldebaran. title track is ultra classic. I feel like I had heard that before, somewhere.

ian did you ever check out that grifters cd I lent you? no pressure, I'm just curious

dmr, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

yeah man, i listened to it just the other weekend on the trip to RI! it rocks. i have picked up a couple grifters singles since you first loaned it to me.

ian, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

rad. everything up to + including "ain't my lookout" is worth hearing. the only one I don't like as much is the last one on Sub Pop before they broke up (full blown possession)

dmr, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

i used to have that "ain't my lookout" cd. musta sold it. was it sort of red red meat, pavement, archers of loafy?

jaxon, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that's them .... maybe not like the archers so much. but yeah Red Red Meat is pretty similar.

their best are "one sock missing" (the one I gave ian) and "crappin' you negative"

their bass player showed up on the grifter thread on ILM a couple months ago, me and mr. que and a few other ppl bullshitted with him for a couple days. pretty funny. they were huge at my college radio station.

dmr, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

i saw the grifters play to a half full empty bottle a couple months before i moved here. it may have been a day show at that? i can't remember, it was a different era.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

the people that ran (run?) the empty bottle were from mizzou too (before my time, tho ... met one of em years later)

^ have you heard "Express Yourself II" from the album right after that one? it's kinda loose and stoned. pretty nice.

jaxon, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 06:34 (seventeen years ago)

so i've been listening to this Indian Summer album and it's one of those albums that psych/prog heads always say nice things about, but it doesn't do much for me. (...) (i mean, it's not TERRIBLE. just kinda dreary and plodding. but not plodding in a good way. or maybe i just need to get stoned and listen.)

totally agree. had this one hyped at me up and down, and i even LIKE dreary and plodding (PATERNOSTER yo), but indian summer just left me totally cold.

Teegarden & Van Winkle With Bruce - On Our Way (Westbound - 1972)

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
the unborn grass lies waiting for its coat to turn to green
the snowbird sings a song he always sings
and speaks to me of flowers that will bloom again in spring

when I was young my heart was young then too
anything that it would tell me, that`s the thing that I would do
but now I feel such emptiness within
for the thing that I want most in life is the thing I can`t win

Spread your wings and fly away
and take the snow back with you
where it came from on that day
the one I love forever is untrue
and if I could , you know that I would
fly away with you

the breeze along the river seems to say
that he`ll only break my heart again, should I decide to stay
so little snowbird take me with you when you go
to that land of gentle breezes where the peaceful waters flow

spread your tiny wings and fly away
and take the snow back with you
where it came from on that day
the one I love forever is untrue
and if I could , you know that I would
fly away with you

m coleman, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

Got this Baby Grandmothers cd in Chicago over the weekend. Thanks for recommending it, Ian. Shit is DEEP. That was all I got, though. I have no money for records right now. Cave (a band I am in) has an lp being co-released by Southern (longtime Chicago based indie distro) and Permanent (old friends with a new store in Chicago) and I got a promo cd version of that while taking a short tour of their warehouse. Oh yeah, I got this Peter Walker cdr, 2nd poem to Karmela. I saw him play and it was incredible. He's a total bro. We had a show the night Charalambides played, though. Bummer. But I've seen em before.

noize advice: do i need the new clockcleaner or sword heaven albums i saw at the rekkerd store today?

put some stuff on layaway at the rekkerd store today. alasehir and no bbq siltbreeze vinyl and eccentric soul numero group vinyl and new fancy jesu vinyl. and three nick salomon comp CDs. gotta find some money and/or some stuff to trade to get them out of hock.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

new clockcleaner is excellent and the gatefold is niiiiiiice.

xno bbqx is kinda boring, i think.

hstencil, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

my pal chris at the rekkerd store was kinda blase about the bbq album too. it's kinda hard for me NOT to buy siltvinyl at the only record store on my little island though. you know? seems wrong somehow. if i don't buy it, who will? maybe julia cafritz. but i think she only summers here.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i will get clockcleaner instead of bbq.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:21 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i was kinda bummed about it because usually i like everything on siltbreeze but both that and the factums records were kinda blah to me.

hstencil, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

do i need that sic alps thing i saw? decisions decisions...

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't get the factums record either yet. have you heard the bardo/alasehir thing? that's probably pretty good. those guys are good for choice stoner buzz. plus, no hippie chix allowed. bonus in my book. (at least when it comes to their hippy chick. i'm so mean.)

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:30 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't heard alasehir but i'm assuming it's okay? i dunno, i already got a lot of bardo records already.

hstencil, Thursday, 15 November 2007 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

noize advice: do i need the new clockcleaner or sword heaven albums i saw at the rekkerd store today?

you probably don't need the sword heaven, if it's the one on load. you know that part in nightmare on elm st. where freddy kreuger's arms are all long and he's slowly walking down the alley with his finger blades scraping along the metal railing or whatever? it's kinda like that. i like those dudes, but unless you're really down for a wolf eyes v. swans type pounding...

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 15 November 2007 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

Miles Davis - Get Up With It! i've never heard this before. heard Rated X yesterday and fucking flipped. excited to listen

jaxon, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

Rated X is actually on Get Up With It, but I guess it's on the big new On The Corner box set, too, as is the rest of Get Up With It.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

Please excuse my retarded last post. Dusted used Rated X in their review of the new On The Corner box set.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 15 November 2007 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

Get Up With It is probably my favorite Miles record, so awesome

I haven't checked out sightings in a few years, how is it

the couple of tracks I've heard off it sound kinda like Liars. I liked it but I guess it depends on whether you want them to be more fuckedup noisy or more song-y (see also Magik Markers record which I've been listening to a LOT)

Oskar Sala - Sound Effects from 'The Birds'
Roland Kayn - Elektroakustische Projekte 1966-1975
last night: Charles Ives' Holidays Symphony conducted by Tilson Thomas, live taping for PBS. I think I might have to go again on Saturday.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 15 November 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

i got the sic alps full-length on vinyl instead of the new EP i was looking at. it's cool. lo-fi psychrock. kinda noisey. lots of echo.

got that jesu vinyl too. the lifeline ep.

and the clockcleaner.

and that numero group comp. and two bevisfrond curated comps on cd.

traded in a bunch of CDs.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

i just saw sic alps and they were pretty good, but i was a little disappointed they seemed to "black keys" kind of typical two-man band type heavy blues stuff...haven't heard the record.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 15 November 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

scott, did the record store on your island get the Dog Faced Hermans "Mental Blocks..." reissue on LP? I like XNoBBQX but i can understand the ambivalence. I like it. It's kinda free rock, free noise. A friend of mine called it "like watching a really good rehearsal."

ian, Thursday, 15 November 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

we bought a dog faced hermans reissue last year i think. or maybe it was this year. on some tiny label. maria loves them. i mean, so do i, but we share da luv. anyway, i think that was the one.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

one of the greatest live performances i've ever seen. dog faced hermans. it was a religious experience. bunnybrains/dog faced hermans/sebadoh at the troc in philly. i always thought it was cool of lou to have opening acts that were often a way better live experience than sebadoh. (got no hate for sebadoh. just never really listened to them. and live they never thrilled me.)

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

the first song on that clockcleaner album sounds like bauhaus! i love bauhaus! they are from philly, right? i wonder if they were tapping the vein fans. or executive slacks fans. or little gentlemen fans.

scott seward, Thursday, 15 November 2007 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

no hate for sebadoh, they just really sucked it

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Friday, 16 November 2007 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

Dog Faced Hermans were also one of the best live acts I ever saw. We followed them from Seattle to Bellingham the next day cuz we couldn't stand the idea of not seeing them again.

In Seattle they opened for Come. Sorry, Come, go home.

Jon Lewis, Friday, 16 November 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

aw, i loved come. on record at least. never saw them live. i can see why they would have been a drag in comparison though.

scott seward, Friday, 16 November 2007 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah it wasn't really Come's fault.

At the same venue I also saw Thinking Fellers AND Sun City Girls open for Betty Serveert, for god's sake. And Boredoms, in 1993, opened for... wait for it... PAIN TEENS. I felt so bad for PT when they went up, they looked like some kind of lame joke.

Jon Lewis, Friday, 16 November 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

did anyone buy that Kevin Shields 12-inch? by gang wizard people. i'm kinda curious. they have a copy at the record store.

there is too much stuff at the record store. i can't buy everything. do i need a religious knives album?

"i just saw sic alps and they were pretty good, but i was a little disappointed they seemed to "black keys" kind of typical two-man band type heavy blues stuff..."

the record i got - Pleasures & Treasures - sounds nothing like that. i mean, it doesn't remind me of anything like the black keys.

scott seward, Friday, 16 November 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

i still want a copy of that first betty serveert album. i remember really liking that.

how can anyone follow boredoms? talk about walking the green mile.

scott seward, Friday, 16 November 2007 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

palomine, scott? was that 1st? i listened to a few things from it yesterday..had been a real long time...can send it to you if ya want

bb, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

Which Religious Knives, scott? There are two recent 12" EP sorta things, one they self-released and the other on Troubleman. I like both; the one on TMU is more Faust and the one on Heavy Tapes is more Popol Vuh.

ian, Friday, 16 November 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

so they are both good though, huh? good enough to buy, i should say. those are the two i saw i think.

i can't really buy anything for a while though.

I just want to jump in and say The Fire Engines Hungry Beat cd on Acute is one of my favorite things of the year. I found a 12" at the community station with "Candyskin" and "Meat Whiplash" and some stuff from their mini-lp and went pretty crazy for it. The record still had all the Fast Product promo copy in it, too. I love finding old records at the station with the promo sheets still in them. My girlfriend bought the reissue for me a couple weeks later. So good!
Thanks, Dan Selzer!

Jimmie Spheeris -- Isle of View (super nice songwriter stuff)
Ten Years After - Undead (totally rips)
Maximillian - s/t (WOAH!!! this album is INSANE! i totally see why it's a $100+ psych htf fuzz monster. completely insane!)
Forced Entry - Uncertain Future (real excellent thrash)
Pilot - s/t (meh .. this blows, you'd hardly know Leigh was on here .. a criminally wasted talent, like those latter-day Quicksilver lps)
Wishbone Ash - Pilgrimage (godhead)
Sapphire Thinkers - From Within (really nice psych with female vocals)
all Neil Young all the time (he just slayed it live)
all Caetano Veloso lps up through 'Cores Nomes' (so did he)

Stormy Davis, Monday, 19 November 2007 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

ooh, i'd love to hear that

jaxon, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

oh those french:

"There is no shortage of dramatic footnotes tied to these bands: A TROIS DAN LES WC dissolved when member Janine dropped dead on stage during the first show of their 1984 tour. VISIBLE lost their traction with the public when they released their album in Braille, a graphic design blunder that rendered their album nearly invisible to the record-buyers. CKC were unable to soundcheck for their live premiere at legendary club Golf-Drouot due to the onsite filming of the classic Sophie Marceau film "La Boum." VISITORS DU SOIR held their band practices in a cave. MARIE MOOR hooked up romantically and musically with tenor saxophone player and film composer Barney Wilen (collaborator with Miles Davis on 1957's Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud, Roger Vadim's Les Liasons Dangeureuse) and started the 4 AS label together. RUTH's debut only sold a meager 50 copies. DEUX was managed by a former rocket scientist (seriously). COMIX/TGV traded SNCF (the French Railroad company) the use of their music for the launch of the Tres Grande Vitesse (Very Fast Train) in 1981 in exchange for the rights to use official SNCF/TGV visuals for their album artwork."

scott seward, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

it's coming out on the everloving label. which is just an indie rock label, i think.

scott seward, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

this came out all wrong. i wanted to send you a copy because it seems common here (but almost always hammered). i think once i posted it was a dollar record and you called me on it. sure enough you were right. what's really pathetic is afterw your comments i gave it another listen and fell in love with it.

i haven't listened to it yet. is the rest of it at all like the title track? all spaced out and afro sounding? i only know it because it's a donuts sample.

tim hardin: simple songs
that plant and a krauss record (which is ..i dunno...what the hell are people thinking of this. i finally decided to give in and give it a try. its bad in the way i expected (polite, well scrubbed production. emotionally distant, yet cloying..etc), but also pretty alright. its nice to still have records that make me feel young)
cowboy junkies: whites off earth now!
loren mazzacane connors: as roses bow, the 2-disc set just out on family vineyard...makes for a nice retrospective.
mwvm: rotations -- ehhh, yeah, yeah, yeah..ok..nicely ambient. i think ive hit a wall with this celestial drone musics. ive become both too picky and/or bored and inable to discriminate between great and average material.

Mr. Que, Monday, 26 November 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

i keep feeling the pressure to buy a jay reatard album. i had no idea who the hell he was until i picked up a copy of maximum rock & roll and everyone who writes for the mag had him in their top ten and then i heard about him all the time. how could he not exist for me for so long and then be everywhere? i'm suspicious. plus, bloody dwarves girls beats bloody dude any day. but everyone really seems to love it. maybe i should give in. i gave in on the white stripes. good thing too cuz i made good money off of that vinyl years later.

scott seward, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

i just don't want it to be one of those silly ilm annie from norway/junior boys/avalanches kinda things.

(even though i know he's some garage punker who has been around forever probably. i should just check youtube)

scott seward, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

"that plant and a krauss record (which is ..i dunno...what the hell are people thinking of this."

i liked it! i did give in to ilm hype there. plus the double vinyl looked nice. i still don't think i've listened to the whole thing though. i really liked the first record a lot when i got it. very pretty. and the production doesn't bother me. it breathes and has life. not like some horrible boring rick rubin corpse prop-up.

scott seward, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

avalanches >>>> annie >>>> junior boyz >>>>> jay retard

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

i was just listening to the reatards (and angry angles) this morning.
jay also mastered a 7" for my friends and i think it's the definition of "polishing a turd". good songs but the guy who recorded them didn't know what to do with them.

chicago kevin, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

how could he not exist for me for so long and then be everywhere? i'm suspicious.

he's been making kick ass records since he was 14, he's been on 35 tours, played over a thousand shows, it's not like he's an unknown.

chicago kevin, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

unknown to me too, but..as i said, not my normal stomping ground for years..was going to go see him at maxwells, but then ended up in for the night without the needed number to call to join the peoples going

it breathes and has life. not like some horrible boring rick rubin corpse prop-up.

thats probably fair. i need to get over my distaste for quality production when it involves good players..i guess i just get hung up on grit. far from an authenticity thing, in my mind, just a weird aesthetic...i like an air of dust and confusion about. (hmmm, idea sparking)...

in naycase adding it to ipod now and will listen while stroling through november weathered evening...

really digging loren connors these days...gddmnd wire reminded me to dig up and rip stuff i had and troll the webs to hear new stuff.

bb, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

"he's been on 35 tours, played over a thousand shows"

okay, fine, but i just looked up his wiki thing and his first record came out in 1998. which explains why i haven't heard him. 1998 is, like, yesterday in my universe. and i listened to very little indie rock in the late 90's. or the 90's in general.

i didn't know he had downs syndrome! wow, that is like the ultimate indie rock street cred. take that, daniel johnston!

scott seward, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

hi Scott I wouldn't say I am a massive Big & Rich fan but I did love that first album, mainly for those amazing close harmony vocals they rocked on basically every tune! It really hits the spot, there's not enough of it around (that I hear, anyway), but yeah I also failed to keep up with them. Never heard any of the follow-ups. ALthough I *did* buy both the 1st and the 2nd Gretchen Wilson albums ... and I though her 2nd one was awesome. There is a song on there that totally sounds like the best Heart song they never recorded. I did not ever hear her 3rd alb though.

I have a soft spot for Beautumn - Northing. They sent a CDR of it when I ordered their reissue of Aloof Proof's Piano Text.

Jonas Reinhardt - s/t (good self-conscious retro kosmiche. not as good as their live show, but way better than Arp or Delia & Gavin)
Conrad Schnitzler + Wolf Sequenza - Consequenz (good! minimal pop, the tracks don't go anywhere but the sounds are pretty out)

i need to look into infraction more. the kiln album and liles' new york doll hve been on my shopping list for a while, and i really like the milieu stuff they play on sleepbot (like this).
