both those enrico rava records are classic underrated late seventies ECM... the former has John Abercrombie and the latter has Roswell Rudd. The 2nd one is moodier, but the first one is for the grateful dead fans & dope smokers.

Listening to the Verlaines - Way Out Where!!! TANK U, AMAZONE.

Laurel, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

I first though Growing was just decent mindless drone but then I heard some stuff with vocals and melodies that was absolutely epic. I haven't Gotten any of the stuff yet though. I need that and more Flying Saucer Attack, I think I sold my one FSA CD years ago.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

bob bannister - eight day clock (twisted village '92 four track stuff for fans of the xpresseway label, etc. really quite good.)

xp. Growing... live have never impressed me, but some of their records are pleasant if a little derivative. Nice guys given my limited interactions with em. Polite, anyway.

ian, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

I've got a few Growing records that I don't ever listen to. Promos from my days writing at Foxy Digitalis. I've heard good things about their shows.

I still listen to Flying Saucer Attack on a monthly basis. Recent favorite being the Sally Free and Easy EP.

Right now I'm listening to a mix of Zoviet*France tracks that one my my music share buddies here at work gave me. Good atmosphere.

I spent an hour standing in line with the guy from Growing and he was very nice, and while name-dropping, the aforementioned Bob Bannister is also very cool.

I've got all these house and techno tracks on my iPod that I've been listening to for the last two weeks and I'm not sure what any of them are. They're all really hot though.

Booker T. & the MG's - In the Christmas Spirit

blow me ian!!

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling christmas eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didnt recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totalled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldnt find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

She said shed married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didnt like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasnt sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude.

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another auld lang syne...

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain --

ian, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

man, I was really disappointed in the Mudhoney show out here. This was I think the 6th time that I've seen 'em, and it was by far the most lackluster show. which was sad because 5 years ago they were great! they had been touring that 'Since We've Become Translucent' and with the new lineup they seemed reinvigorated and way into it, playing a lot of stuff from that album. This time, they honestly looked bored and going through the motions, played mostly older stuff, and Mark Arm barely said anything the whole night. bummer.

that's cool that you got "Mudride" though!! major tune. they didn't play that here .. we got "No One Has" and "If I think"

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

that's cool that you got "Mudride" though!! major tune. they didn't play that here .. we got "No One Has" and "If I think"

they did 3 nyc area shows of all Superfuzz Bigmuff. they seemed a little cynical about it (cracking jokes about "if you are following along at home, you know the song remaining to be played this evening is ... ") but I wouldn't say they were just going through the motions. otoh it was the first time I've seen em so I don't have anything to compare it to. sounded good to me. "Halloween" was pretty heavy too. also Pissed Jeans opened.

dmr, Thursday, 6 December 2007 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

oh ok ... yeah, I guess that was part of the "Don't Look Back" series.

see, I would've loved to have seen "Halloween"!! oh well, I'm willing to believe it was just one of those nights. the crowd was pretty lame too.

scott seward, Saturday, 8 December 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

i love the trimbles! i like the 2nd one better by just a little bit. to me it seems like an acid damaged emiit rhodes/chris bell type of thing.

ian, Saturday, 8 December 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

they're cheap on vinyl, scott. like $12 or $13.

i will get them if i see them. cool covers!

meanwhile, someone has to stop these motherfuckers:

"The UK bootleg label Radioactive Records also released an unauthorized, vinyl-sourced version in 2005. Please don't support Radioactive or its sister label Fallout Records -- they're crooks and they make inferior products."

was it gareth who really liked those records too? i can't remember. who is gareth now anyway?

one more thing: who is bo jackson overdrive?

i can't keep track of this shit. i feel like these people know me and i have no idea who they are or were.

i just went to the record store and they are gonna get the trimble vinyl in. i'll buy them there. i didn't buy much. black flag album. was gonna shell out for norton dictators comp, but then didn't.

scott seward, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

norton dictators comp is awesome.
what black flag album didn't you own already???

ian, Saturday, 8 December 2007 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

everything went black. i didn't have a copy. and it's the original version with no band name on the cover. cuzza the whole lawsuit thing. i've gotten rid of stuff over the years. i don't have a copy of my war anymore. other stuff. every once in a while i get nostalgic.

scott seward, Saturday, 8 December 2007 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

i bought movies at the video store instead. meet the robinsons for rufus (awesome by the way) and knocked up/children of men/28 weeks later for me. 3 for 20 bucks at hollywood video. that's how i see everything i don't go see at the movies. which is most everything.

Make it easy and I’ll hold it against you
I’m on a string dangled right in front of you
Make it hard and I’ll run away
Keep tomorrow as I kill today
Trying to figure just what I deserve
Slashing lines all across the earth
Patience only makes the dream come true
Everything I see I hold to you
Tell me, this is it—
The Truly Great Thing
The love you’ve hoped to find
Any doubt will simply wipe itself out
As we’re rising deeper the first and last time
Lift me up and drop me down again
Every day I feel confusion, pain
Love is what we’ve all been waiting for
Something powerful to smash it all apart
Can’t love if you’re locked up tight
The dream of perfection, nothing ever seems right
All the world will tell you, "You’re all wrong"
Big big deal if you’re wrong
This is it—
The Truly Great Thing
The love you’ve hoped to find
Any doubt will simply wipe itself out
To rising deeper the first and last time

it's good dave, and it's always really cheap ($3-5.) It was one of those Arista Freedom issues from the seventies, but the recordings themselves are from '68 I believe. It's just straight duos and it's got a nice variety in terms of feeling & dynamics.

ian, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

and by "straight" i don't mean to say it's boring or traditional particularly, just that there's no rhythm section to speak of. Gato gets pretty out there at times.

xpost to ian and dave - i remember really liking it. i haven't listened to it in years. it was released on Actuel under the title Hamba Khale!

i've listened to a handful of dollar brand albums in stores, but besides this one, they always leave me a little cold.

this one however (Abdullah Ibrahim & Johnny Dyani - Echoes From Africa) is one of my fave jazz albums. really slow, repetitive, afro-modal jazz with just piano, bass and vocals.

yeah JaXoN it's that first Chilliwack with the mask, not the 2lp. I was so pleasantly surprised! Very nice record.

what's this

Milton Parker, Thursday, 13 December 2007 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

seventeen first recordings for solo voice, chorus, and chamber orch. conducted by gregg smith columbia masterworks...had it for a while but slip it on too rarely. (turntable is only in my bedroom, so it gets used too infrequently) lovely stuff, though...towards the more "song" oriented material. features a number of psalms.

bb, Thursday, 13 December 2007 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

i guess its properly called "new music of charles ives"

bb, Thursday, 13 December 2007 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

stormy -- morgen is the world psychedelia release (they also do a lot of the korean stuff like san ul lim and rumor has it the hominid behind the bootlegs lives in the nw).

oh, and that listening part:

Fraser And Debolt -- Fraser & DeBolt With Ian Guenther
Melvin Jackson -- Funky Skull
Juan De La Cruz -- Himig Natin
Screamin' Mee-Mees -- Plastic Hong Kong Door Bell Finger
Wall Drug -- Wall Drug

also, to these ears, the Talking Heads get worse and worse with age (and at one time i liked them quite a bit, oh well)

Reginald Mantle, Friday, 14 December 2007 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

also, stormy, have you heard any of the Rabble (Canada, end of the 60s) albums? What thinks thee?

Reginald Mantle, Friday, 14 December 2007 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

doubt ill get sick, milton, so let me see if someone (hey! nyc) can digitize it for me/you...

i dont know that record scott pictures above -- my "modern classical" knowledge is damned spotty, to say the least. if anyone can reccommend a good book or something, id be into it...maybe ill get ross' new one (tes rest is noise)-- im very fond of symphony #4, and the pieces for new england...i also have some weird record of holiday(patriotic songs)...

I'm in NYC in February so if you see one, put it aside. (Playing the Stone).

Some people are content to stop with 'Three Places' but I pretty much like all of it, though I have to be in the mood for the songs -- most singers are too polite with them, Gregg Smith is one of the only arrangers who brings the crazy

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 20 December 2007 04:53 (seventeen years ago)

bb, I haven't read the Wire piece, no ... Is it different than the one they did when he was on the cover for 'Shleep' ? I guess it would probably have to be! I'll probably pick it up eventually.

tenniscoats "tan-tan theory"
bent wind "sussex"

Reginald Mantle, Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:39 (seventeen years ago)

stormy: yeah new interview (toop) from last month...worth reading (well, hes always worth reading about). evidently the story goes that mr. r wyatt, for not delved into reasons, was downing a ltr of vodka a night leading into the period of the record. song was written by alfie, as she was torn to bits watching (robert coming back from his work room or studio and claiming sobriety when he clearly was not)...yet, she found herself entirely dedicated -- still loving him more than life -- and knowing she could do much of anything, if he wouldnt... hes in aa now. and the song is....god... from anyone else, and arranged/performed differently the thing would be cheap and cloying...from r wyatt, goddamned heartbreaking

listening...bunch of james blackshaw, sun city girls, early low, chris watson

bb, Thursday, 20 December 2007 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

kirk by 1940 was a little staid IMHO. i have a few volumes of his early stuff comped.

I just looked for an lp of it at the used record shop last week. We didn't have it at the radio station, either. I was beginning to think I wasn't gonna hear it ever, and then I find this cdr copy of it in the breakroom along with Bobby McFerrin's "Simple Pleasures," You better believe I grabbed that one, too.

Lots of Dead C and Sun City Girls ('Carnival Folk Resurrection' series) as Xmas music. Marion Brown's "Afternoon...". Surely ECM hasn't gotten that much better, jazz-wise.

Currently making my way through 4 CDRs worth of perfs by Rallizes from the 80s.

Plus giving a really close listen to some of my Nara Leao albums - real unevenness here but when it hits gold..

Captain Beefheart - Lick my Decals off and the last CD from the Grow Fins set - some incredible perfs on that one, many funny moments as well.

i was gonna post this on that xian thread, but i'll post it here. IAN i think you would really dig this record by abe & malka. sadly, i sold my copy on ebay cuz i needed money :( but it doesn't go for TONS of money. you could probably find one for 30 bucks or maybe less. dreamy stuff. but also super-trad guitar picking and olde tyme folk. nice record.
