Dr Morbius, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Friday, November 30, 2007
So I was an extra on a movie last night

To my dear sweet Michael Cera,

It was a pleasure to meet you last night.

Although our conversation was all too brief, I can tell that it meant something special to the both of us. Yes, when you declared whilst at the kraft table for your one-day-to-be-released teenage romantic comedy that it was a cold night out, and I responded in the affirmative, did you feel the sparks that rose between us? It isn't every day where you find someone who is able to discuss, in such a concise yet pointed way, the direct effect the weather has on human comfort.

“Wow, it's cold out here,” you said, retreating into the inner warmth of your jacket like a baby bird nestling into its mother's feathery bosom.
“Sure is,” I replied as I cupped my coffee gingerly.
“Is that prosciutto?” you asked, your voice cracking in that titillating, just out of puberty way.

You were facing one of the many assistants on the set, but I knew you were addressing me. I reached to stroke the back of your neck and reassure you that it was most definitely Italian ham, but thought better of it last minute. It would be tacky to so publicly display our amour.

Not to be overly sappy, but your words warmed my heart – making the night worth the ten hours I had spent sitting in a inhumanely freezing room, being an unused extra for what looks like will become the Citizen Kane of the iPod wearing generation.

So, my luscious lamb chop of a man-child, when should we tell our friends about the wedding? When 'Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist' wraps? Must we wait that long to officially declare our love? I pine to have you near me again, my inamorato, but if we must postpone our liaisons, I will do it patiently. For you.

Millions and hugs and kisses,
Elaine

P.S. We didn't get around to it this time, but please give me a chance next time to sit you on my knee and bounce you up and down like a baby.

P.P.S. You're legal now, right?

diet soda isn't a deal breaker but I would roll my eyes so hard my contacts would pop out (which has happened 2 times now!) Just use soda or tonic as a mixer if you are worried about calories or sugar.

Yerac, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

what is the big fucking deal if someone orders a goddamn diet coke?

latebloomer, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

I actually don't drink any soda at all and stick to water, coffee, booze and %95 of the time, since juice also is too sweet usually.

haha i think my original thing was that the people who came into the bar and ordered diet coke and rum were usually the worst people in the world. I think I told L the taste of it made me feel like I had just vomited.

all the bartenders at the bar were also amazed at how many people bought stella (Oh wow! They have Stella!) like it was this classy beer when it was the worst beer we carried in that price range.

Yerac, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Michael White, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i will come out tonight and ask every bartender if they have wine bartles and james or smirnoff ice, and then ask for a rum and diet coke.

Yerac, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

thats cool. i'll come out tonight and not give a shit about what anyone else is drinking and have fun.

yeah, i actually don't give a shit what people drink either and think it's funny that it's such a newsflash that since bartenders are usually sober assholes and you are drunk they will hate you for many reasons.

Yerac, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

at least we can all agree on people that think stella is good are pretty silly. i don't think they are douche bags though. just uneducated.

Yerac, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Stella is good for "I would like a watery/refreshing domestic beer but I will pay two dollars for it to taste slightly better than that"

The Stella thing I think is attributable to the fact that it's a Belgian beer, so people are like "whoa, it's Belgian, so it must be quality". I think I made the same mistake for some duration a few years ago and it became a cheap-ish default beer for me when out, but nowadays similar default would be weird choice like Carlsberg or something.

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

But FWIW I get the impression that in the UK Stella has a whole different thing around it than in the US? Like in UK it is the non-UK lager choice supremo, possibly?

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Stella is just a default beer for UK people who don't really care about beer. It's the national beer in the same way that chicken tikka masala is the national dish.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

i was surprised to learn that rolling rock was available outside western pennsylvania

mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

I drank Yuengling a lot when I lived in pennsylvania because it was almost free, so I find so weird people voluntarily pay $4 for a bottle of it here.

Yerac, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

compared to here, all beer in pennsylvania is almost free

mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

yuengling is low-man on the totem pole for me

69, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yuengling lager; fuck that, it's really too much like H20. But some of their other stuff is good.

Stella, meh...I like Heineken, even though people swear it tastes skunky (green bottle phenomenon?) and Rolling Rock is maybe just above PBR? Like, maybe alarmingly piss-tasting, but deal-able...as opposed to Budweiser which I swear tastes like ashtray residue and just plain makes me wanna yark. Plus the label on Budweiser is so ingrained into my head from repeated exposure that it seems like some demonic quantity of an especially banal order. On the one or two occasions I've coughed up money for Budweiser I've hated myself.

dell, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

chaki, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

i like the bus, but it's definitely a leisure time activity and not really practical for my commute--traffic is too unpredictable and schedule not dependable enough.

ian, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

i used to hate riding the bus, but where i live now, there's never more than 3 other passengers, and most of the time it's just me. and if i'm late to the bustop the driver waits for me. i also don't have to ring the bell, because he knows where i get off.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

also, wow, chaki's defending litterbugs now! bottom of the barrel.

ian, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

Oakland buses are a whole new thang, Ruby.

chaki, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

you mean in a bad way?

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

bad exciting!

mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

jordan's buying me a bike, so i have to cycle everywhere ;_;

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

you're going to need to ride the bus to get places.

chaki, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

what about the train?

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

it will take you a very few places

mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

theres an oakland BART stop right below my org's office out there

69, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

69, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

sunny successor, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

BART is neat, Rubes, you're guna love it. There are robot voices that tell you when the next train is coming and the seats are cushioned! It's like BLADE RUNNER!

chaki, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

"i've seen things you people wouldn't believe"

gff, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

"it's like blade runner" and/or "it's like logan's run" would basically be my main reasons why I love the DC metro

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

today I fucked up my timetable and was engrossed in my book so I went through the cemetery to the pentagon and had to reverse direction after going through two stops and it only made me 12 minutes late to work. that shit is money.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

for ex., "doesn't like rap" vs. "works for beer company, gets free beer always"

Jordan, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

girls who like rap are kinda overrated

from NYT.com comments section, tips on how to sell you house

Two words: Remove Stains. I learned that lesson selling my first house. A wonderful selling point of my house is the large two-car garage. Impeccably maintained, with sturdy shelves, cabinets and solid workbenches - perfect for a man's man dream workshop. Now, I'm a hunter; killing game is what I do. Normally not an important detail when selling your house, but cleaning animals is, like or not, a part of the hunting process. The problem is that after years of slicing, dicing and hanging fresh kill to drain in the garage, a rather large crimson-tinged stain has formed in the center of the concrete floor. Kind of hard to explain away to prospective buyers, especially when they see the stain first, then the meat hook hanging directly above (a permanent fixture, unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on how you look at it). Take my word for it, "suspicious stains" are a sure deal breaker!

whoops i meant to type 'vegetarian who only eats meat replacement foods and not actual vegetables' but got itchy on the trigger finger

I'd ask if you were dating my roommate except she only goes for girls. EAT VEGETABLES. IT'S SUMMER, FFS.

LORAX IS BACK BABBIES

avuenjo, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

(in replay to my story) - It was just weird how this person spouted out these deal breakers from seemingly nowhere. It was like she was telling me "no dice" when I hadn't even talked to her let alone hit on her. And it's not like my nails or van dyke were in bad (let alone mediocre) shape either. But "that's a deal breaker" (30 rock reference for my homies)

i.e. possible to please with a USB stick that contains 20 x the amount of music an audiophile would enjoy, that seems like a good thing to a cheapskate like me.

StanM, Saturday, 16 August 2014 20:59 (ten years ago)

but can you at least tell the difference? one can settle for lower bitrate files for convenience's sake without being completely oblivious to the dropoff in quality.

(fwiw I wouldn't seriously rate that as a relationship dealbreaker)

unregistered, Saturday, 16 August 2014 21:10 (ten years ago)

Of course I can, but for some people sound quality doesn't matter that much, somehow.
