moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 April 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

Stage three
Before this stage, a round of both stage one and two is performed. It involves actually taking the water in the mouth and directing it out the nose. Very few yoga instructors know how to do this and it is only a marginal improvement over the benefits of stage two.

tehresa, Monday, 28 April 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

You gotta drain your head fully. Stand on top of a bathroom rug or mat; you're gonna drain a lot of water out of your head. Starting from a standing position and bend over into a jackknife. Take deep breaths through the mouth and exhale slowly and somewhat forcefully (but don't go crazy) through the nose. Do this about seven or eight times or until there's no more water or popping in sinuses. Then raise your head so that you're looking forward and do it again. Then tilt your head to one side for about five to ten seconds and do it again. Then the other side.

Don't BLOW your nose until you've done this once after each nostril. Otherwise you end up vaporizing the water in your sinuses and it pops into your ears and that sucks and can potentially (if done over a considerable period of time, so relax) cause inner ear infections.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 28 April 2008 04:47 (seventeen years ago)

wow you sound like a pro. can you give me any tips on the actual neti process?? i'm getting the water to run through pretty quickly but i feel like it's just running *around* the mucus without clearing anything out. more salt? hotter water? more runs?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 April 2008 05:08 (seventeen years ago)

I've been neti potting for three days to get rid of a cold and I can't tell that it's doing anything. It goes in one nostril and out the other without getting into my mouth, but I can't really feel it moving through my head or clearing out anything.

milo z, Monday, 28 April 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'm using a tablespoon of water per pot, with the water hot to the touch but not painfully so. The salt and heat are there to give your body the sensation that this isn't a foreign medium being introduced; you're trying to get a comfortable balance. Depending on how stuffed up you are, you can just keep running water through until you're breathing clearly; as long as you're draining the water thoroughly, it won't do any harm if you do it twenty times a day.

In terms of "feeling like it's working", I'd just go by your ability to breath afterward. If you're still highly allergic afterwards, rinse that sucker once more. I don't think sinus irrigation can get rid of a cold, but constantly flushing the shit out of your head can prevent one from coming. It CAN break down blockage, but I'm not really using it for that. For me, it's about getting out allergens that I've inhaled that are continuing to irritate without breaking blood vessels blowing my nose or having to stand in front of an air conditioner all day.

Anyways, this is just trial and error stuff. People can feel free to refute me.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 28 April 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, tablespoon of SALT per pot.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 28 April 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

I think the amount of salt also depends on what kind it is (table salt versus kosher salt).

tokyo rosemary, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

first time neti pot this morning!

the pamphlet that came with the pot recommends 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt -- and you say you use a whole tablespoon, forks? that's 12 times that amount!

elmo argonaut, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

should be kosher salt or sea salt in the neti pot. 1 whole tablespoon is definitely too much.

cutty, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

i'm gonna drive to half moon bay and get some pacific ocean water for the neti pot

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 April 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe it's a teaspoon? I got a spoon specifically for this and then forgot about it. i am not a neti dread master. But yeah, I use kosher salt. It's like three bucks for a massive box that lasts forever.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 28 April 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

yah, teaspoon for the koshers

cutty, Monday, 28 April 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

well, i def felt better after the neti pot first thing in the morning, but a mere three hours later and i can already feel the nose clogging up again. i guess i'm going to need to take a claritin after the neti just to keep things clear.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 28 April 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

so i was taking a warm bath tonight to try to beat the heat, and i decided to use the neti pot. this is great, i thought, the bathwater is like the perfect temperature. almost exactly my body temperature ...

well, i forgot about the alkalinity of soapy bathwater. and i poured a whole potful of soapy water through my nose before i remembered about it. burning. nose and sinuses are burning.

I got a neti pot for dummies (the nasopure, it's just a squirt bottle you fill with water and a salt package then put up your nostril) and the damn thing gets water in my ears. Really uncomfortable. I guess I'm not "blocking my throat" the right way? Helps with the allergies, though.
But I've got ear history (skin graft on my eardrum) and the sever discomfort isn't really worth the benefits of clearer breathing, i think.

i was telling some germans about this on saturday night. at first they didn't understand, then they were like "a ha! ja, NASE DOUCHE!"

But I've got ear history (skin graft on my eardrum)

I may have to have this done. Was it horrible? I'm really nervous about it and keep putting it off. :-(

ENBB, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 03:49 (sixteen years ago)

Was it horrible?
I was maybe ten or eleven years old. It really wasn't so bad. My brother kicked me in my head while we were fighting in a swimming pool. The pressure exploded the ear drum. My mom, not realizing the extent of the internal damage, put alcohol drops in my ear. That was the serious pain. All the medical shit didn't seem like a big deal to me. I think it helps that it was the first time I'd ever gone in for surgery. Recovery was a little uncomfortable, I guess. My hearing is really sharp, I find.
If you are having problems, it would probably worth it.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, you're probably right. I have a hole in my L eardrum from multiple injuries and infections that just won't heal. There's also a cyst there. I've chosen to have it treated medically rather than surgically because the idea of someone going in there just really freaks me out but I should probably just bite the bullet and get it done. Have to have my eardrum "cleaned" with horrible sci-fi looking instruments every couple months is bad enough.

ENBB, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

That sounds terrible. If nothing else, at least you are asleep when they do the skin graft.

FIRST YESTERDAY, NOW THIS. MY WORLD IS CRUMBLING.

HOW NASAL IRRIGATION INCREASES SINUS INFECTIONS

Like brushing and flossing, nasal and sinus irrigation has become a daily ritual for many people who tend toward chronic nasal problems. Popular wisdom has it that removing mucus daily via nasal irrigation (also called nasal lavage) rids the nose of dust and other pollutants, eliminating a possible breeding ground for germs and infections while also allowing for easier breathing. It seems to make sense -- but does it work? Not at all, according to a new study. In fact, long-term nasal irrigation actuallycontributes to nasal infections.
WHAT’S GOING ON?
Talal M. Nsouli, MD, director of the Watergate and Burke Allergy & Asthma Centers in Washington, DC, has a lengthy résumé that includes having been personal allergist to President Clinton during his two terms, clinical professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and former president of the Greater Washington Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Society. Dr. Nsouli says he began to question whether regular irrigation was helpful or harmful when he saw that patients who practiced regular lavage had nasal linings that looked hard and smooth, "like a piece of plastic." He began to notice the trend toward more use of this practice about seven or eight years ago, and decided to investigate, recruiting 68 patients who had used neti pots for nasal saline irrigation at least twice a day for 10 months or more.
For one year, these patients continued irrigation as before. At the end of the year, they were instructed to suspend nasal irrigation for the next 12 months. Another group of 24 patients who used neti pots daily were used as a control group and monitored for 12 months. The results were startling, even to Dr. Nsouli: Patients who stopped nasal irrigation for one year had a 62% reduction in sinus infections from the previous year -- and got half as many infections when not using sinus irrigation as those in the control group.
According to Dr. Nsouli, mucus contains aggressive antimicrobial agents that have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity. One calledlactoferrin, an immune system stimulator, has been shown to be effective against infection, including cold-causing viruses (rhinovirus) and, I was surprised to learn, even the HIV virus. Irrigating the nose regularly washes away the mucus and with it a valuable defense mechanism. When study participants stopped their nasal irrigation routine, they were astounded at how much better they felt and how quickly -- even though it takes two to six weeks to fully restore the natural condition of the nasal passages.
Frequent irrigation does moisten nasal tissues, but this effect lasts just 20 minutes -- in fact, notes Dr. Nsouli, the viscosity of mucus helps the nose stay moist. Some patients experience a yellow-green discharge after giving up lavage, but Dr. Nsouli said this is actually a symptom of a low-grade infection or chronic undiagnosed allergies. He advises them and anyone else with a chronic stuffy nose to see a doctor. Typically, the solution is a course of antibiotics and/or prescription nasal sprays that block symptoms while they improve the condition. Dr. Nsouli points out that it is the practice of rinsing that is problematic, not the solutions used, so this advice applies to over-the-counter nasal sprays as well.
NETI OR NOT?
Nasal lavage grew in popularity after the well-known physician/author Dr. Mehmet Oz sang its praises on Oprah a few years ago. Many adherents use a spouted, urnlike device (it comes from the Ayurvedic tradition) called a neti pot. It gets placed in the nostril and water is poured through it to flush out mucus. While previous studies have supported regular use of the neti pot, Dr. Nsouli says these were based on subjective, self-reported, short-term findings -- unlike his study, which was carefully controlled with objective evidence provided through CT scans of the sinuses, fiber-optic endoscopy and detailed medical histories.
Dr. Nsouli emphasizes that he’s not completely against using the neti pot or any of the many other nasal-lavage devices on the market today including pumps, Waterpic-like devices and OTC saline sprays. In his opinion, these should be used only when specifically needed and for a short time, such as when you have a bad cold that makes it difficult for you to breathe. There also is a risk for contamination of whatever device you use and resultant chronic infections, so be sure to practice good hygiene. Use whatever device you like to wash out the mucus once or twice a day, but for one week only -- that’s what Dr. Nsouli does and what he now advises his patients to do.

answer to not getting water trapped in sinuses/ears: i do fifteen minutes of hamstring/calf/quad stretches and let my head drain out while I'm doing those.
it is unpleasant and it makes getting ready in the morning like an hour long thing but i can breathe and my foot pain is greatly lessened and i have learned to read the new yorker whilst doing all the above and now all these things are linked together in my mind: new yorker interviews/saltwater trickling out of my nose/warrior one pose
try it!

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

Sounds like more work than I want to put into it but I am willing to give it a shot. Allergy season is upon us.
I should really do more yoga, anyway. Thanks for the tip.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

if yer serious about it:
my post neti routine is left leg warrior one for a twenty count, then right leg
then touch yer toes/hang over your knees for a twenty count and twist to left and to right with a ten count apiece
probably TMI, but what happens here is that the saltwater still in your sinuses will move around and drain out while your head is at this acute angle. if that starts happening, just roll with it
then, standing and supporting yourself against a wall, quad stretch. Heel into buttock, stand erect and try to draw your knee as far back behind you as you semi comfortably can.
Do all the above five times. Generally i can get through a complete New Yorker article and a review/GOAT.
NEVER NEVER BLOW YOUR NOSE until after you're done with all the above; the water atomizes and clogs yer ears up.
i would like to point out that i hate doing this shit. but i also don't enjoy flossing and i do that anyway cuz i like to not get my teeth drilled. I also like to breathe and walk without pain. It's worth the time and it becomes a habit if you do it for about four months religiously.
i am late to work a lot.

one time i went surfing at dawn for a few hours then went straight to a 9:30 AM hot yoga class. about 20 mins into class we had to bend at the waist and invert our upper body touch-your-toes style. i had been feeling a little stuffy all morning but as soon as i inverted, all this seawater that had been lodged in my sinuses came POURING out all over my face and onto my yoga mat, and a lot of mucus came with it. i had to leave class and go blow my nose for a while but i felt rad after that!

THE OCEAN IS MY NETI POT YALL

gr8080, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

this may be a given, but this is a warrior one stance: http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/1708
you ain't gotta do all that with the upper body (and i don't cuz you can't read) but it helps increase the stretch

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

I love to floss. I will give this a shot. My allergies are pretty bad.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

keep me posted.
this plus loratadin and singulaire finally tamed seasonal allergies that demolished my college years
