Dudes, I love y’all and I'm a huge fan of ILX whether I’m posting here or not, but seriously. This has become massively fractal and out of control.

I’m not a sock puppet. If you don’t believe me, do a search for “three handclaps,” which was the username I posted under here back in Fall 2007 when I was a junior in college. There’s a thread I started about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and several threads about rock criticism, the same kind of stuff I post about today. I eventually took a break from the board and lurked for over a year, returning to post as “kshighway” earlier this summer. Many people started to criticize me for unironically, enthusiastically posting about indie rock and other related topics; while I understand that attitude, I find it difficult to believe that the people who were knocking on me couldn’t conceive of the fact that a 22 year old who had just graduated from college had a taste in music that adhered to the indie canon. (I also started topics on ILE such as Living in a City without a Car: Classic or Dud and S/D: Contemporary Continental Philosophy. Why someone would sign up for a message board and start both of those threads as a joke makes no sense to me. Anyway.)

In early September, I decided I was spending too much time here and not getting enough out of it anymore, and like many before me I quit the board. I changed my password to a set of random characters so I wouldn’t be tempted to log back in again, and I stopped reading the boards completely. I eventually started to lurk again, following my P2k thread among others. I saw people start to mention my username, and I decided I wanted to come back and start posting here. Apparently electricsound denied my registration request for “kshighway1” because he thought I was someone else trying to impersonate me; that makes sense considering the circumstances. I wasn’t sure if something was wrong or not since I wasn’t receiving a confirmation email, but I persisted in signing up, someone eventually accepted my registration, and here I am again.

I would really appreciate it if people would back off on the whole sock puppet thing and let me post. I’m as tired of all the meta-bellyaching as many of you must be, and I’d rather focus on doing my best to contribute to threads concerning stuff I’m excited about from now on rather than answering unprovoked attacks.

Wow, great question. For me it was probably in 2004 with Wilco's "a ghost is born." Before that record I had been listening to nu-metal and alternative rock radio pretty exclusively, but after I read an article about the Wilco record in Spin and Rolling Stone I picked it up and after that there was no going back. A record geek was born.

This album isn't talked about enough. It's probably my favorite album of all time. The chaos of the guitar playing in "At Least That's What You Said," the haunted minimalism of "Hell is Chrome," the transcendent guitar solo in Theologians, the lyrics, the mood, O'Rourke's incredible production! The list goes on forever. Does anyone else really treasure this record?

uh yeah. suppose i should explain. i used to post here a couple of years ago under my own name but i guess no one really paid any notice to yet another boring 30-something blogger talking about how much they love idm or whatever. i came back here to lurk a couple of months ago coz i liked reading the end of year/decade lists and stuff and i know lots of music journalists posts here. first thread i read was that big clusterfuck thread about the p4k best of the decade and people were talking about how there were no chicks on any of the lists and that was coz there were no chick reviewers or something and about how, like, people treat chicks differently. i thought this was total bullshit coz i don't treat people any differently if they're a man or a woman and the chick obviously had some massive chip on her shoulder so i decided to log on but with a female name this time and see if anyone did treat me any differently

funny thing is people have actually been alot friendlier to me as "karen" then they were two years ago when i was originally posting and i've got otm more and excelsiored twice so i dunno what that says

anyway sorry i wasn't doing it to be malicious i was just kinda curious and it was an experiment. i honestly thought someone would call me out in 3 posts

I think that's more to do with ILX and especially ILM becoming a lot more tolerant over the last couple of years, particularly as a lot of the serious aggro posters have gone.
