welcome back Shakey Mo, haven't seen you on the board in a while - maybe we're on different threads or you're on the noize board or something. Anyway, as an LAite, who did a year stint living and working in NY, I think that the distinction 'tween the two major metros is that LA is in the car so much more than NY and the demo that JACK is gaining headway in is in DRIVETIME. LA of that demo is just flat out tired of too many commercials and too much jock chat. JACK is diverse in its playlist and is gaining in the anglo demo who don't have satellite radio. Not many black/hispanic listeners want or have satellite, so it's become the poor white persons satellite radio station. Broad playlist, no jock talk and fewer ads due to sponsorship sales. Also helpful to the station itself is that it's automated, so no DJ fees. There are so many other stations for the black hispanic listeners (in fact LA has more hispanic listeners than anglos) and hence the high ratings for JACK.

(12-27) 15:18 -- The self-proclaimed San Leandro "Sausage King," sentenced to death in February for murdering three meat inspectors during a 2000 rampage, was found dead early today while on Death Row at San Quentin Prison.

Guards found Stuart Alexander, 44, unresponsive and not breathing at about 4:30 a.m. in a suicide-watch cell, said Sgt. Eric Messick, prison spokesman. Alexander could not be resuscitated, and the prison physician pronounced him dead at 5:15 a.m.

Although Alexander had been placed on suicide watch on Christmas Eve and had been receiving psychiatric care, it did not appear that the one-time San Leandro mayoral candidate had killed himself, Messick said. Officials found no signs of foul play and believe Alexander died of natural causes, authorities said.

The Marin County coroner conducted an autopsy today but was awaiting the results of toxicology tests -- which could take weeks -- before determining just how Alexander, who had gained a tremendous amount of weight in the years since the killings, died.

In February, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Vernon Nakahara sentenced Alexander to death, four months after a jury found Alexander guilty of three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of U.S. Department of Agriculture Inspectors Jean Hillery, 56, and Tom Quadros, 52, and state Inspector Bill Shaline, 57.

The June 21, 2000 rampage at Alexander's Santos Linguisa Factory that was caught on his own security cameras. Alexander also was convicted of attempted murder for chasing state Inspector Earl Willis and firing five shots at him. Willis escaped injury.

During a six-month trial, jurors repeatedly watched surveillance camera footage showing Alexander shooting each of the inspectors in the head after having already sprayed them with gunfire. Prosecutors said he had killed them as they tried to cite him for allegedly selling sausage without government approval.

The manager at that movie theater stated that more people had asked for their money back from that film than from any other film in that whole theater franchise's history. I guess it's because of our close proximity to the Mexican border and because of the proliferation of wealthy Mexicans who come here to visit and shop, since these same wealthy Mexicans are just as obnoxious and irritating as the main protagonists of Y Tu Mama Tambien were. Please, I already get enough of that shit while going through Wal-Mart and any local mall.

Other than the fact that one of the characters in the movie comes from a wealthy family in Mexico, I have no idea what she she's talking about either. If the protagonists are obnoxious, it's because they're adolescent boys. And if scads of San Antonio filmgoers asked for their money back, I wonder if it's partially because they didn't realize it was an art film? It sounds like she has some weird socioeconomic issues.

Btw. the terms Generation X and Generation Y are being mis-used here.

Generation X - born from the late 60s until the mid 70s - were never into disco. We grew up on 80s new wave/new romantics/synthpop and later a lot of Gen X got into "alternative" (grunge, britpop). They were - maybe because they were the first generation who were told in school and by their parents not to trust grownups (mainly to avoid sex crimes committed against them) - also one of the most ageist generations ever, and preferred to follow their own sports, have their own "slang" to a larger extent than anyone before them, their own very different clothes style (that has seemed to survive longer than most, but is now slowly on the decline), even their own attitudes towards drugs (only a few hippies were ever in favour of drugs out of the 68'ers). Generation Y will be written into history as the "different generation", as the next generation is already about to abandon most of their values and embrace older generations' values.

And they we are onto the next generation. They aren't christened yet, but let's call them Generation Z. Generation Z grew up on the kinds of music that Generation Y gave them, but have now started to investigate older music to find other styles. They love My Chemical Romance, Panic At The Disco, Green Day, The Darkness and old ÀC/DC and Iron Maiden records. They spend less time listening to music, though, as they are more busy using their mobile video camera to film their friends while they are trying to kill themselves in various dangerous "stunts" that are subsequently uploaded to Myspace, Facebook or Youtube. Because Myspace, Facebook and Youtube is where you find Gen Z, more than anywhere else.

I've been banned for close to a year by moderator Ozma at SA. I posted an article about my winning an award from an alternative newsweekly which mentioned SA, and another about Google notifying me that they were dropping faithmouse from the search term 'Britney Spears no underwear' because they had discovered a 'hidden' St. Michael The Archangel prayer on my site, and she said I was just shamelessly using SA to promote my cartoon. I logged in a few times since then, but all I get is a picture of a semen-covered penis embraced by a tarantula.

It does play a role as a kind of filter for me, but I tend to place more stock in the volume of criticism than in its content. For example, bands like Television or the Velvet Underground, who get praised consistently and in relatively varied contexts, tend to be worth checking out. Bands like Big Star or Wire, who got loads of praise when Teenage Fanclub or Elastica came out but go unmentioned elsewhere, tend to be less interesting. I guess this is a long way of arriving at my own version of The Canon.

The other use of criticism is when I come across a gushing piece in an unexpected place, or one describing a song or band in unexpected terms. Obviously this only works if I don't actively seek it out I have discovered/rediscovered loads of tunes in this way, and ILM (or the Number Ones blog on freaky trigger) is a pretty useful source for this.

You know I don't think I've ever said I was leaving ILx before (*waits for dork to find contradictory post*) but I know saying you're gone and then coming back is the cliche. I don't think I will.

I've been there for six years now and always felt there really wasn't anything that would make me leave. I've weathered many changes in tone, good people leaving and personal attacks. But now I just don't care anymore. The board has been so boring in general lately and I keep saying "oh it will get better it always does." I think I'm tired of waiting for that.

There have been a lot of good new posters lately and I've enjoyed falling in with a set of mostly Irish/Scottish folks. I'll miss those people and their posts about their daily lives, just as I miss similar posts from others who have left before me.

As useful as ILx has been for connecting with people it's also given small people's worst tendencies a stage. I'm tired of the bullying. I'm tired of personal attacks. I'm tired of people airing other's dirty laundry as part of thinly-veiled personal vendettas. What did it for me this time was the use of second-hand gossip, that had no place on the board in the first place, to harass other users. Some people seriously lack appropriate social and communication skills. I'm sick of letting them bother me and sick of wasting my time and mental energy reading their stupidity.

ILx has been a great distraction for bored moments at work. To break myself of it I'll have to find new distractions. Facebook? Scrabble? Maybe writing/blogging. If any of you are a part of another community, let me know. I hate to leave the good folks behind.
