the other morning i woke up and noticed my left eye hurt every time i blinked. took a closer look in the mirror (with right eye) and found my left eyelid was swollen and red, with a little red dot in the middle. self-diagnosis: got straight up bit in the eye by a spider X_O

swelling is down now so the chances of my eye suddenly bustin forth with a writhing swarm of spiderbabies seems slim

ij, that happened to one of my brothers once!! He fell asleep on the sofa near a new Christmas tree that had just been brought in from outside and common wisdom is that the heat of indoors hatched the eggs and some babies bit him(?). He was in the hosp for several weeks while doctors tried to figure out what "infection" he had -- they almost took out his eye on the rationale that the infection might spread to the other one!! Thank all that's holy my dad refused to consent.

- painful tightness in both sides of my jaw, often moving up into my head. also clicks.

- squawking noise involuntarily emitted from my throat. random timing. often in stressful situations. kind of sounds like a parrot burping.

I used to get that trouble, and also my jaw would get stuck closed and I'd have to punch myself in the jaw to unlock it. Now it's not so bad, although it does go "pop" while eating food that requires a lot of chewing. I've never had it checked out by a doctor, buy it might be worth doing, particularly if you grind your teeth in your sleep (I used to - was a hyper stressed and angry teenager).

estela thanks, i actually have been contemplating doing this, but here's why i havent (aside from not wanting to go on blood thinners):

in 2001 i had basically identical symptoms in my upper leg following a really severe blow to my thigh muscle. went to the doc after a couple of weeks, he shrugged and ordered an mri. i went to do mri, but tech told me the instrux were for an mri of my knee, so i cancelled it, since that wouldn't even image the area i was experiencing the pain in. w/in a couple of days i did a hard cyclocross race. when i woke up the next morning i had a huge visible bruise just above the outside of my knee and everything felt normal again. yknow, my doc did not seem to really believe my story. so here i am.

shingles isn't contagious, i don't think?!

also: my sympathy is with you, estela - both my little sis and my mum got in within a few months of each and it was pretty painful for both of them. but apparently catching it quickly is def the way to lessen its impact.

Aww E, I hope you recover quickly!
Laurel, I'm all alive and at stupid work as usual. I didn't fess up to the doc about the ear thing. Last time I complained about something they took my ability to create life away and, as you guys well know, that's really the only thing I like to do. It was like my superpower. So I learned my lesson - my lips are zipped. Actually before I complained about the other thing I had always had very low blood pressure. I think they broke me in more ways than one.

Nope all true. The past 6 months have been v. bad - 3 surgeries (2 major,1 exploratory) 4 months of constant excruciating abdominal pain that 60-80mg of oxycodone a day could only take the sharpest edge off. In my oxyc- pain combo delirium I agreed to something I never ever would have considered otherwise and now I am in sparodic pain and narcoticfree and mentally/emotionally more angry than I've been since...well maybe ever. Anyways, I plan to check my bp on the weekend. I'm still willing to bet this is some left field anomaly and everything will be back to normal when I check next but we'll see.

harbl, Thursday, 27 May 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

sunny that is awful :(

but harbl is right, this is America. the question is if it meets the four pronged standard for malpractice: duty, breach, cause, damage. and ~that~ probably depends on what the content of your consent forms were (like maybe they freighted in the possibility of vascular injury, which actually seems likely)

either way: consult counsel, not the Internet and see if you can have someone investigate yr possible renal stenosis. on the upside, I just learned today that renal stenoses involving scar tissue are repaired with pretty nice success rates. downside: more surgery :(

gbx, Thursday, 27 May 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

look at this little torts student!
yeah you gotta talk to a real irl lawyer though, and even if your consent forms say you waived something it could be a thing you could get around. if you end up paying more money because of this it might be worth it.

did they ever check out the renal stenosis?

gbx, Friday, 4 June 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

not yet. the new meds are making no diff but a couple of weeks ago i stopped meds altogether and dropped down to stage 1 (for the most part - stage 2 appears every now and then). I got this bitchin new doc who is a chick (never ever had a woman doc before). She gave me a new diff kind of medication (not a beta-blocker) but again they arent doing anything. She has ordered all my med records from the surgery, my OB/GYN and my therapist. Shes studying this shit. This is the first US doctor I feel like actually wants to solve the prob. Her initial diagnosis - The history of super low blood pressure for me as well as everyone on my maternal and paternal side and the time line of the jump make renal stenosis number one suspect. I see her again Wednesday. Im pretty sure shes going to order a renal angiography.
Weird fact: Back in the 80s she interned with my OB/GYN who did the surgery that could have caused this. She sure as hell wasn't making any excuses for him though.
Not so weird fact: I hate being an unhealthy person. It sucks ass. Holy shit I do not want to fuck up my kidneys. no no no.

cradle cap is seriously the first thing I thought of. Solution ive heard parents using: wash hair (scalp) in olive oil a couple of times a week.

no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

Overview

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, inflammatory skin condition that causes flaky, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas such as the scalp or inside the ear. It can occur with or without reddened skin.

Cradle cap is the term used when seborrheic dermatitis affects the scalp of infants.
Symptoms

Seborrheic dermatitis can occur on many different body areas. Typically it forms where the skin is oily or greasy. Commonly affected areas include the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, creases of the nose, lips, behind the ears, in the external ear, and along skin folds on the middle of the body.

Seborrheic dermatitis in infants, also called cradle cap, is a harmless, temporary condition. It appears as thick, crusty, yellow or brown scales over the child's scalp. Similar scales may also be found on the eyelids, ear, around the nose, and in the groin. Cradle cap may be seen in newborns and small children up to age 3 .

Cradle cap is not contagious, nor is it caused by poor hygiene. It is not an allergy, and it is not dangerous. Cradle cap may or may not itch. If it itches, excessive scratching of the area may cause additional inflammation, and breaks in skin may cause mild infections or bleeding.

In general, symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis include:

* Skin lesions
* Plaques over large area
* Greasy, oily areas of skin
* Skin scales -- white and flaking, or yellowish, oily, and adherent -- "dandruff"
* Itching -- may become more itchy if infected
* Mild redness
* Hair loss

Treatment

You can treat flaking and dryness with over-the-counter dandruff or medicated shampoos. Shampoo the hair vigorously and frequently (preferably daily). Loosen scales with the fingers, scrub for at least 5 minutes, and rinse thoroughly. Active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium.

Shampoos or lotions containing selenium, ketoconazole, or corticosteroids may be prescribed for severe cases. To apply shampoos, part the hair into small sections, apply to a small area at a time, and massage into the skin. If on face or chest, apply medicated lotion twice per day.

Seborrheic dermatitis may improve in the summer, especially after outdoor activities.

For infants with cradle cap:
# Massage your baby's scalp gently with your fingers or a soft brush to loosen the scales and improve scalp circulation.
# Give your child daily, gentle shampoos with a mild soap while scales are present. After scales have disappeared, you may reduce shampoos to twice weekly.
# Be sure to rinse off all soap.
# Brush your child's hair with a clean, soft brush after each shampoo and several times during the day.
# If scales do not easily loosen and wash off, apply some mineral oil to the baby's scalp and wrap warm, wet cloths around his head for up to an hour before shampooing. Then, shampoo as directed above. Remember that your baby loses a lot of heat through his scalp. If you use warm, wet cloths with the mineral oil, check frequently to be sure that the cloths have not become cold. Cold, wet cloths could drastically reduce your baby's temperature.
# If the scales continue to be a problem or concern, or if you child seems uncomfortable or scratches his scalp, contact your physician. He may prescribe a cream or lotion to apply to your baby's scalp several times a day.
Causes

Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be due to a combination of an over production of skin oil and irritation from a yeast called malessizia.

Seborrheic dermatitis appears to run in families. Stress, fatigue, weather extremes, oily skin, infrequent shampoos or skin cleaning, use of lotions that contain alcohol, skin disorders (such as acne), or obesity may increase the risk.

Neurologic conditions, including Parkinson's disease, head injury, and stroke may be associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has also been linked to increased cases of seborrheic dermatitis.
Tests & diagnosis

The diagnosis is based on the appearance and location of the skin lesions.
Prognosis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic (life-long) condition that can be controlled with treatment. It often has extended inactive periods followed by flare-ups.
Prevention

The severity of seborrheic dermatitis can be lessened by controlling the risk factors and by paying careful attention to skin care.
Complications

* Psychological distress, low self esteem, embarrassment
* Secondary bacterial or fungal infections

When to contact a doctor

Call for an appointment with your health care provider if seborrheic dermatitis symptoms do not respond to self-care or over-the-counter treatments.

Also call if patches of seborrheic dermatitis drain fluid or pus, form crusts, or become very red or painful.

just1n3, Monday, 28 April 2014 05:15 (eleven years ago)

Go see a doctor, you need X-rays. Might be an extensor tendon avulsion and/or fracture of the distal phalanx:

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 2 May 2014 17:15 (eleven years ago)

Ate a bagel last week and within 3-4 hours I had a headache, felt tired and unable to focus mentally, like when I'm coming down with a flu, went home and went to bed and woke up sweaty, feverish. I'm used to bloating and stomach pain if I over-do wheat but I'm not used to that massive...auto-immune response? Running a temp like 16 hours later seems extreme. Ugh.

I should get insurance eventually.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 2 May 2014 17:21 (eleven years ago)

I keep meaning to do some kind of trial exclusion/auto-immune diet but when it comes down to it I'm just not sure if I can change my lifestyle that much for 30 days or more :\

(symptoms: weird skin problems, mainly, but also tired and hard to focus, being fat, and having digestive issues I don't think the internet needs to know about)

Any recommendations for good approaches?

the ghosts of dead pom-bears (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 2 May 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

I'm just not sure if I can change my lifestyle that much for 30 days or more :\

Tbh there's no way around it--if you get a positive result for any of your dietary testing, you're going to be changing your lifestyle for more than 30 days!! Also ime my reactions to the offending food items are getting worse, ie the damage to the stomach lining (if I understand that correctly) is cumulative, so while I can get away with a few pita chips or a croissant here or there, I have to make those rarities and can't let sandwiches, for inst, creep into my regular diet.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 2 May 2014 19:09 (eleven years ago)

do the reactions get worse because you avoid it on the reg?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Saturday, 3 May 2014 01:13 (eleven years ago)

No exactly the opposite, I think? They get worse when I have too much wheat in a row, whereas if I've stayed off it for a while, I can cheat here and there. (I hate using the word "cheat" there but wth I can't be bothered to make up new nomenclature right now.)

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Saturday, 3 May 2014 18:24 (eleven years ago)

i have a really large bruise type of thing on my lower inner thigh - it's about 5 x 3", but doesn't hurt and it looks deep, it's not near the top of the skin like a normal bruise. i had this once before, about 10 years ago but it was on my outer thigh. back then, the dr just checked my platelets i think, and everything was normal so that was that.
