Pertinent quote:

"There is still so much for me to do," said Deen, who is working with farmers and other food producers to come up with a line of fresh fruits and vegetables.

So far, it's passed the child test. Deen's 4-year-old grandson, Jack, raved about her broccoli. She's hoping to have the fruits and veggies in stores this year.

If the line is successful, "it will be a dream solution for young mothers," Deen said, because of the freshness and taste of the foods.

I didn't want to go anywhere near her restaurant when I was in Savannah last year just on the .01% chance of seeing her in person. The food at her brother's place was really good, better than at her place I'm guessing.

man, there was this girl when i was a freshman, right around oct 06 too, that was super into me & one of our first moments of 'bonding' was over paula deen -- i feel bad cuz she obv had a huge crush on me but i didn't even really like her that much as a person & eventually had to block her out of my life, she is kind of a sad human being overall -- she actually bakes now, cookies & shit -- she should've realized i was gay by how much i talked about watching the food network, prob her fault imo

I love how she goes to twice the trouble w/ the plating as she does the actual food itself.

Paula has sort of been my favorite since early high school, like before we knew she was a crazy horny old woman. To this day the only thing I've ever willingly shoplifted in my life was an issue of http://www.pauladeenmagazine.com/ . I think when "Paula's Party" came out my soph year of college it was my favorite show for a few months!

Paula Deen Accused of Using N Word In Explosive New Lawsuit

In one example, Jackson states that she was appointed by Deen to handle the catering and staff for Bubba's wedding in 2007, and she asked Deen what the servers should wear: "Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around,” Jackson alleges Deen told her. "Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn't it? But we can't do that because the media would be on me about that."

Another alleged racist incident listed in the lawsuit: "In the presence of Ms. Jackson and Uncle Bubba's restaurant manager and a vendor, Bubba Hiers stated they should send President Obama to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico so he could n***er-rig it."

“That’s kind of hard. Most — most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks. Most jokes target — I don’t know. I didn’t make up the jokes, I don’t know,” said Deen. “They usually target, though, a group. Gays or straights, black, redneck, you know, I just don’t know — I just don’t know what to say. I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person.”

I love all the jokes that target the straights, those always bring the house down.

It is racist to say it and good lord, ESPECIALLY RACIST to use it to describe what kind of freaking waiters you want at your dinner.

But all that said, asking a woman of her background, "Say... have you ever used the N-word?" is right up there with asking someone my age if they've ever said the word faggot out loud.

pplains, Saturday, 22 June 2013 03:11 (twelve years ago)

But is she being fired for having said the N-word, or for the incident that caused her to have to admit in court that she's said the N-word, thus bringing shame on her show and her network? It's the latter, isn't it.

you can kind of see that in the self-congratulating commentary that has surrounded this whole thing, much of it inflected with an "anti-southern" bent that is really just poorly disguised classism. it's always convenient to locate racism in the figure of the overt bigot rather than in structures of inequality you might be benefiting from.

They are cheap as hell. You have to bring your own bags. They have kind of a warehouse set up wherein a lot of their stock is just put out in the boxes it was shipped to the store in. A good friend lives across the street from an Aldi and while she is pleased to have a nearby source of groceries, she says it doesn't quite cut it as a sole source for grocery shopping (kind of how Trader Joe's wouldn't). She said they have really cheap cheese, though.

The registers are kind of weird. The cashiers sit down. They are also the kind of anti-TJ's cashiers in that they don't give a shit what you bought or whether you've tried it before and have no interest in engaging in any banter.

Actually, the last time I was in an Aldi I think the cashier was yelling at a disruptive drunk to get the hell out of the store.

carl agatha, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)

have never heard of these stores before. doesn't sound like my kind of thing altho from that map it looks like there is one somewhere in the bay area...?

the Spanish Porky's (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

Aldi is...different. They keep slash overhead by stacking things on pallets on the floor, charging for bags, not bagging groceries for you, and being generally as austere as possible. You have to deposit a quarter to use a cart.

But their products are usually good, and prices are very low.

I've been to Aldis in rough areas, but in Chicago we also have one by Crate and Barrel, etc. in ritzy Lincoln Park.

I like Aldi.

xps

Je55e, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:40 (twelve years ago)

yeah the cash register situation is super disorienting if you're not ready for it. you have to bag your own groceries and you have to be fast because there is literally no room for the groceries to pile up after they've scanned them

also you rent the shopping carts for $0.25

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

Their version of Triscuits and Wheat Things are super cheap and OTM. Nuts are cheap there, too. Produce is good and cheap. Potato and corn chips are good and cheap. Their havarti is delicious and creamy and cheap.

Je55e, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

The disruptive drunk Aldi was in Uptown.

one time me and my boyfriend were visiting thrift stores and got a little too stoned (it happens) so we come across an aldi, thinking, ok, let's get a bottle of water here.

there was no water, at all, just, like brands of canned vegetables i'd never seen before and a dozen different types of austrian shortbread cookies. you had to enter through a turnstile i think?? and it was kind of laid out like a labyrinth -- no aisles, just one path weaving through all of the pallets. i dunno.

i mean obviously i did not visit under ideal conditions but

I have totally forgotten that there are stores where you don't bring your own bags + other people bag your groceries for you

the Spanish Porky's (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

At Aldis I've been to they dump the groceries back in your cart after they ring you up and then you go to an area where you bag or box your groceries. I like bagging my own groceries, actually, which is why I prefer self-checkout at other stores. It is a little shock the first time you realize nobody's gonna bag your groceries for you.

Je55e, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

That store is pretty rad, but yeah they are for people w cars. I need to find one on a bus route but the only one I can think of off the top of my head is way the hell out in East Atlanta and it would probably be a 3 hour trip and right now it's so hot that whatever food i bought would be ruined by the time i got home.

I did go to one once to buy breakfast fixings and was really amazed at how cheap everything was. Even compared to Kroger or the Farmer's Market everything was cheap. The produce was like 1 or 2 dollars less than usual.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:29 (twelve years ago)

The afternoon before the cruise sets off, I fly to Miami. On the plane, I sit next to a woman who talks to me from the moment she sits down. When the plane lands, she tells me "I'm sorry we didn't start talking sooner," presumably referring to the time period before she and I arrived at the airport, or expressing her regret that she and I were not old friends prior to meeting. Her husband offers me a granola bar, which I decline, and then some dried meat, which I also decline, and then the granola bar again, which I accept.

I spend the next few days considering his inner monologue, wondering exactly what I am watching him see. (Eventually I settle on: himself, in his younger days, discreetly killing people.) I like the South Dakotans a lot.

Everyone on the boat is racist and nice. Including me.

The non-Deen cruisers are racist. The amiable mother of a former Miss Virginia is racist and has a tenuous grasp of the concept of slavery: "Don't I see [Paula] walking around with a black fella? He's her bodyguard or something? That right there shows she's not racist." The urbane gay couple visiting from Los Angeles is racist: "Filipinos are pushy," one of them explains shortly after telling me he is "not okay with" Deen.

The Deen cruisers are racist, dismissing out of hand the notion that Paula's use of the n-word was somehow offensive to black people.

I am racist, because I get upset at the black people in our group for not acting like I think black people should act on the Paula Deen cruise (i.e. frosty and indignant; or at the very least incredulous).

Not everyone wants a hyper-detailed account of something they find inconsequential.

I would probably like it less too if it was about a golf outing (or like a profile of tax appraiser or a hiking enthusiast) but if it was written as well as the Paula Deen one, I can imagine it still being interesting. I mean, just started reading DFW's A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again and despite disliking math and not caring at all about tennis, I really enjoyed the first essay, which covered those topics.

Not that everyone should love the PD essay, but it's odd if the class was unanimous in not caring for it.
