I'm in this camp too. When I was in high school, I once thought I'd really hurt my best friend, and I agonized over it for a whole weekend and felt really awful, but when I saw her again on Monday, it turned out she didn't even think it was a big deal, I'd just thought it was.

Thankfully I'm somewhat more stable and less self-absorbed these days. But I still feel kinda awful if I've hurt someone.

I think it works better if you're used to being an asshole and then convert to actually not wanting people to be mad at you.
