velko, Thursday, 26 November 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

this is terrible bullshit. i remember back in the BSB era when Sarge was new on the scene, it seemed there was a new ban thread for him every day. i contributed to those threads and i possibly started one, or several; my recollection is poor. it seemed like he was an asshole and dude was all over every goddamn thread, and besides, it was something to do. but we were wrong and he showed us that. he started with some ground to make up but he rose up Against All Odds and grew into a solid dude, a stalwart asset to this board, and if you SB'd him then i dunno i guess you should burn in a lake of fire for all eternity.

fyi I don't in any way support the sb system anymore, but i accept that it's prob here to stay until someone comes up with a workable improvement to it. afaik the closest thing there is to a justifiable reason for sb-ing is when you find yourself offended by another poster, regardless of whether you find yourself the target of the offense.

and lol @ people finally now realising that sb is anonymous and having a problem with it.

nah i mean implicit in what i said is the fact that jordan and lj had a good/playful relationship afaict and if his dickishness was seen in that context it's probably not deserving of a SB. obv u should SB ppl for outright dickishness and racism/etc to other ppl, i just don't think jordan really fell into that category really. of course the system is what it is and that judgment is in the eye of the buttonpusher

pretty sure a bunch o ppl sbd jordan bc he was close to the 51 and it was funny

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 26 November 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

from jordy:

e: louis him & i are cool & when i make "snipes" at him by joking about, say, his truth or dare experience, he knows that it's in good fun & i know that it doesn't bother him or else i wouldn't do it. sarahel overreacting to that post i made about jagger family xmas 08 is hilarious to me because it was barely even an incident, and ilx people only remember it because it was part of a generally funny chatz session. i know that louis wasn't insulted about that, like at all. it was a funny post, i think he knows that. as for something like the herman g neuname post that pash linked to,

like i think that guy is a horrible poster. i don't have a problem saying that but on the flip i don't think other people should get so INSULTED by that notion. if someone told me that i made horrible posts on ilx — and, when i first started posting here, basically everyone did, including in a 'ban j0rdan s4rgent' thread that was the top google hit for my name for a year or so until i had it deleted — i would just go along with my day.

if it was someone i cared about i would probably take into consideration, but otherwise i would be able to let it slide. i can understand if people think i'm a dick but if i & other people like me get banned forever — which at this rate i assume i will be — then really it's just gonna be cuddlestein ilx where no one will check each other. i support the SB system because if that's the ilx that people want than by all means stop me from posting, but i don't see why people would want to be part of a community where people are forcefully driven away for basically saying 'i don't like you'.

i.e. what i said to sarahel about her turning threads into personal conversations with other people is more constructive than an SB, but from my understanding that post got me some SBs, which doesn't make sense to me. anyway, that's all.

max, Thursday, 26 November 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Thursday, 26 November 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

harbl, Thursday, 26 November 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

i agree, but "god no one can turn a thread into a self-indulgent chat black hole quicker than sarahel huh" doesn't = constructive to me, or a few SBers, either by the look of it

stet, Thursday, 26 November 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

Jordan, all I'm saying is that when you post shit like that, it comes across as cheap & snidey, and ppl generally dislike cheap snideyness. Nothing to do w/ppl taking offence on others behalf, or wanting to turn ilx into "cuddlestein mountain" (which it never was & never will be) just that if ppl see something like that, they'll be like "ugh, fuck this guy".

― mu-mu (Pashmina), Thursday, November 26, 2009 2:12 PM (9 minutes ago)

yeah i get this but what theyre actually like is **sound of pressing SB button** which is totally unhelpful. which is why "ban xx threads" were probably a lot more worthwhile because it gave people a chance to hash out why they didnt like a poster and it also gave the poster an idea of what he or she was doing to piss ppl off.

we be emmy robin' (k3vin k.), Thursday, 26 November 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

mixed feelings here - obv it is no secret that sarahel and i are tight, but i have been slightly surprised by her anti-j0rdan vitriol, and JS is right that that 'incident' didn't piss me off in the slightest - in fact i am quite a big fan of j0rdan and regard him as good ppl. i hope this does not colour sarahel's opinion of me, but to me it seems that J is an earnest and friendly dude who has a tendency to call ppl out rather than exercise tact - which is ok because he is consistent and sincere - and i have no problem w/ supporting him in all of this.

GET THAT BABY JESUS RIGHT UP YE (acoleuthic), Friday, 27 November 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

man this storyline is getting difficult to follow

iatee, Friday, 27 November 2009 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

however that anti-sarahel post was hasty and didn't take into acct that others incl myself were also blabbering away on that particular derail - also sarahel is i can confirm EXTREMELY aware of her occasional tendency to blabber on (as am i - we have had group therapy gchat where blabbering is redirected) and that wasn't so much helpful as blunt and slightly unkind. like, if he wanted to call her out fine but call the rest of us out too. J is usually consistent as i say but that is one occasion when he wasn't, and where he was making something out of nothing. i can understand why she bust out the sb for that one, altho i don't personally condone it. i know yr both good ppl and i just wish ilx had an instachat option so you cd brazen it out together and be all 'hey its cool' after 5 minutes of increasing <3

GET THAT BABY JESUS RIGHT UP YE (acoleuthic), Friday, 27 November 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

30 days is a really long time. can't mods just yellow card someone for a bit, or have a sb equal maybe 7 days?

i think it's an awful system, unless someone is being completely racist/homophobic/posting personal stuff about others, it seems like otherwise .. if you have a rapport with a few people in which it is totally OK to snipe at each other, there's nothing to stop others from dropping in, unaware of this dynamic, and sb'ing someone. which is maybe what happened here. seems unfair not only to that person but to the rest of us, ILNFL is just not the same. can we substitute in hatcat for a 30-day ban instead?

i think SBs should only last 30 days... i mean the "up to 51" accumulation

i also think that since it seems pretty unanimous that old SBs shouldn't last more than 6 months, the fact that that's not in place right now means that the whole system should be taken down till it is tbf

it is in place but it's done manually at the moment, i think? e.g. jordan got all his in the last six months.

caek, Friday, 27 November 2009 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

totally 100% genuine question:

what about a suggest-ban system that is board-based instead of sitewide? we could reduce the number of suggest bans needed--to, say, 15 or 20--but you garner them on each board independently, and as you hit the magic number, you get banned from that board.

obviously jordan got under a lot of peoples' skin. id sort of guess, though, that he drew way more suggest bans on ILM & ILE than he ever did on ILNFL--as daria points out, the standard for what constitutes acceptability is very different on that board vs. ile.

im exhausted from arguing about suggest bans generally speaking but i DO think one flaw in the system is its inability to account for different norms on different boards. jordans posting style has been ruled "unacceptable" by a certain number of people, but (again i dont know) id guess that few, if any, of those people, suggest banned him on ILNFL. and it seems unfair that hes being banned from ILNFL for crimes he committed elsewhere.

i dont know if thats a huge pain in the ass to code, so maybe its a moot point. i do think though that the sitewide nature of the suggest ban kind of ignores the way boards operate. i dont post the same way on ilm that i do on 1p3 that i do on I LOVE CRICKET: THE CHINATOWN OF ILX: THE CHINATOWN OF ILX. and it would suck to be removed from I LOVE CRICKET: THE CHINATOWN OF ILX: THE CHINATOWN OF ILX because of stuff i said on ilm

1) i didn't sb jordan for that post, cos he seems like a good dude besides, but it was a pretty cunty comment and i can definitely see why a few people decided they could do without him around for a while based on it.

2) three/four mods made comments equally as snarky to sarahel at around the same time or since, for the same type of thing (derailing threads or excessive metadiscussion, when there were three or fours posters involved in each case, not just her). don't know what the point of bringing that up is, but it's been bothering me on her behalf, even if she's taking it all in fairly good spirit.

naw havent played more than an occasional binge in the last couple years - i suck now - no focus

ice cr?m, Friday, 27 November 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

i hadn't seen this until now. a few things:

1. the post that jordan made towards me that i sb-ed him for was on 77. this is not 77. i'm still unclear on what can and can't be posted about from 77 to public boards, but that particular post - i don't know if i'm entirely comfortable about having that quoted verbatim here.

2. it's obvious that j0rdan gets annoyed by me, and i get annoyed by him. people annoy each other, that's life. i get annoyed at j0rdan's constant cheap shots at LJ because I don't think they're funny. Not in the - "I can't see anyone finding this funny" way, just my personal sense of humor. There are other people's cheap shots at LJ that, sorry L0uis, you're my friend and all, but some of them are hilarious. I don't sb people that occasionally post things that annoy - or people that are constantly annoying. I generally don't care all that much. I also, personally, don't feel like sb-ing someone for just being annoying or making jokes i don't think are funny. I think that's a poor use of the sb system.

3. I think I said in another thread that I rarely sb anyone - because really, this board is pretty tame and people more or less coexist functionally here. The only thing (besides boring sockpuppet trolls - funny sockpuppet trolls are another matter) that I sb for - is over the top, gratuitous personal attacks on other posters. I felt that what j0rdan posted about me on 77 fit that criteria. My response was not 100% sincere. It pretty much meant - I get what you're saying, that was a dick move in terms of how you phrased it, let's drop it for now.

4. I try to be upfront with people who do things that I feel are shitty. I also try to not make a dramatic clusterfuck out of them. I think to a large extent that calling people on things that bother you is worthwhile, because sometimes, people just don't have a clue. I have no problem with people saying, "that's not ok" or "you might want to consider stopping this now" - basically, what it seems like j0rdan has gotten a number of sb's for doing. My beef w/j0rdan is the way he says what he says. It often comes across as insulting, and like he's an internet hardman-in-training or something, and is less likely to get anyone to do much self-examination, and more likely to result in people thinking he's a dick. If he wants to play it that way - he's like what, 22 years old? That's his deal. I've been there and done that, and it eventually got really old.

sarahel, Friday, 27 November 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

speaking as one of the mods who does sometimes go into snark mode, i try to control it for the most part, but you have to realize that i kind of feel obligated to read and pay attention to all of the threads on MRF/IMP, so it gets kind of infuriating when i have to sit there and refresh the thread every 30 seconds because someone is deciding to go off on some hilarious tangent.

also despite the fact that i am a big scary mod, i am also a dude who posts on the internet, so yah every so often shit gets heated and i get snippy. i do my best to keep it cordial tho, and sorry to anyone who feels slighted - i am not a vengeful dude so srsly feel free to sb me, or email me, or call me a dick or whatever.

sarahel, Friday, 27 November 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

truly reprehensible, mod-bannable shit was still not allowed, but general abrasiveness was fine. i'm guessing that subboard sb (sbsb lol) might be tricky to implement, but i think it would work.

I'm coming to this late, but as an acquaintance of J0rdan and several other recently SB'd posters I think the system sucks. Plenty of people have mildly offended me in the many years I've posted, but closing the ILE window, simply walking away from the computer usually cools me down, or simply telling the offender "fuck you" usually does the trick. SB seems like a craven, quiet way of doing the same. Very few if any things posted are worth thinking five minutes about.

I understand that the internetz is made for passive-aggressive or shy people who can't confront problems, but this is a community, and if you post something you should stand by it when someone looks you in the eye and calls you on your shit.

tho, admittedly, this DOES put the onus on the offended to be proactive about confronting the offenders, and that might not be something a lot of ppl (lurkers, the meek, etc) are up to, esp given how cocksure a lot of more-likely-to-offend posters are.

then again, the type of behavior that might legitimately cow someone into not telling an offensive poster to fuck off is prob the sort of behavior a mod would've kaiboshed already

sorta the point, i guess. or at least sorta cruxy to what the sb thing ends up being about (imo): at what point should someone htfu and either a) step away from the computer or b) tell someone to fuck off? or does that presume that all SBs are because of personal beefs/slights, and not because of activity that is just generally corrosive to the community or discourse, or w/e?

i mean, obv if someone is being horrible to someone else, they won't want to confront them, and shouldn't have to just deal with it, so the button's there to register their disapproval. but i still kinda wonder if that encourages ppl to make rash decisions about other ppl's "value" to ilx, instead of realizing that sometimes it actually ~IS~ just the internet.

I've tried to will it personally, but it's difficult when nothing you post is actually controversial but is merely annoying.

really senile old crap shit (Eric H.), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

The reasons (I gather) why people are SB'd:

1. They've been actively obnoxious many times.
2. They said something that personally offended the banner.
3. The offended party is too shy or discourteous to confront the offender.
4. They openly admit to "digging" Bono.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

5. They're asking for it.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

This comparison is probably useless, but in the real world do you walk away when someone offends you and talk shit about them to their colleagues or your mutual friends? I'm sure plenty do.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

i doubt very much there's only one or two coherent 'reasons' people are getting sb's.

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

xp yes--it's wrong in the real world and it's wrong on the internet.

heh interesting to know if there's been sb action on WDYLL?

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

In the real world, I don't get offended by people. I have the Internet to do that for me now.

...must...stop...SB talk...

but: i've only SBd a handful of people (when we first got it) and they were all randoms (to me) that i targeted in a fit of pique, all "well fuck THAT guy *click*"

really senile old crap shit (Eric H.), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

if anything, i'm liable to run into someone with whom i disagree so vehemently about *important* stuff (there are more intractable righties in my world than on ilx) that i usually try to keep things from getting into contention, because then i will just have to start beef with ppl i see every day and have to be collegial with

all well and good gbx, but how do you incorporate it into the system?

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Monday, 30 November 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)

xxpost Sad truism of internet interaction is that, if it's of the healthy variety, one should be able to walk away from anyone and never communicate with them ever again and not be particularly phased by it.

One idea that I think would be reasonably quick and painless to code (maybe?): ILXors should be able to see their own SB total by checking their profile or preferences page. I'm not sure there's any benefit to keeping it a surprise for everyone, or something you have to request on 77, but I'm sure some people would find it useful to know they're racking up 5+ SBs a week, or whatever it is.

It's like speculating about how your life might have been better if you did X instead of Y, and then finding out that if you had done X you would have ended up murdering 20 infant orphans and joining a cult.

i think we're way off the topic of missing j0rdan s here.

sarahel, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 03:51 (sixteen years ago)

on topic post: when i sb-ed j0rdan, it wasn't that i wanted him banned permanently from ilx - as the red type says - but i felt he needed a break to cool off, reflect on what he gets out of ilx, why he responds to things the way he does that gets people to sb him, because he does seem to take it a lot more seriously than a lot of people here do. I can't think of anyone I'd want banned permanently. But sometimes people need a mod-given or system-given break.

I think it's interesting that both j0rdan and I have been banned, not that long after self-banning for the same period of time we got banned by others for. I don't know if his self-ban was related to the stuff other people sb-ed him for. I know what I self-banned myself for for 3 days was pretty much the same stuff the mods gave me a break for.

ha um i can pretty much tell you jordan's not gonna be changing his behavior when he comes back, and i think saying he takes ilx "more seriously than others" is kinda wrong, too. i don't think i've ever seen j get really worked up over anything on ilx, his questionable zinging tactics are more a product of a certain ennui than an over-investment imo; for example, i SBed kate (in the p4k thread i think) because i thought she was taking ilx way too seriously and letting it get her really riled up over pointless shit. pretty much shows why you shouldnt be so paternalistic about the thing - had no idea she'd respond the way she did and i genuinely feel bad about it now
