Benson is now 8 months old. He enjoys tossing his toys in the air, taking naps with me and using my head as a place to rest his chin, stealing bits of paper and then making me chase him around the apt in order to retrieve them, eating, and cuddles. He can give paw now which is v v cute. So basically what is going on with him is that he's still awesome.

Oh his expressions are the best and they're total silly clowns. This morning while I was in the shower he took a brochure I had sitting on the table. When I came into the living room he was just holding it here in his chops waiting for me to emerge so that we could play chase me chase me. He was probably sitting there waiting for like 5 mins or something.

Ball Chop 2012 is a no go!
Vet just called and I nearly had a heart attack. Everything is OK but it nearly wasn't.
I didn't really get all the details but they started with the anesthesia and then he started to cough and was having trouble breathing and then got so worked up that the vomited and while doing so inhaled some into his lungs at which point his tongue turned blue and the vet was like, yeah, we're not doing this today.
He's fine and resting there until later when we can pick him up.

Yep - he was scratching at it like crazy last night which is what made me ask the vet to check it. I have heard that about babies how they'll poke or pull at their ears and that's what made me wonder about his tbh. They did give him ABX (shot for the UTI and drops for the ear) so hopefully he'll be a lot better soon.

Two nights ago I noticed a couple drops of blood but I wasn't sure exactly where they were, er, coming from. Since I couldn't just ask him I got all investigative discovery up in here and put down paper towels hoping he'd remember to go there from when he was paper trained. He did and it was v obvious that it was in his urine. Apparently UTIs are pretty common in small dogs. What's is that rather than do expensive testing (UA and or x-rays to rule out stones) they're treating first since in 85% of dogs it is just a UTI and ABX will solve it. So he got a shot and his urine will be retested in 2 weeks. If at that point there's still blood (which I don't think there will be since there isn't even any this morning) then we'd go to x-rays.
Anyway, maybe that's not interesting but I just thought there whole approach sort of was and appreciated them not sending me immediately for $$ tests esp since he's acting totally fine and doesn't appear to be in any discomfort at all in that are. lol I really should have gone into medicine somehow. I love this stuff.

yeah it's a weird story
i was in israel for a bahai trip, my parents suggested i pray. i was like fuck that, i'm not praying. and they were like come on, make a wish. and i was like, fine, i'll pray. god? i want a puppy, a pony, or a million bucks.
one week later, back in the USA, driving in east LA, i see this dude running across a five-lane road in an industrial neighborhood. i went around the block to make sure he made it safely, and he ran back across the other direction. so i went around one more time and he was just zigzagging IN THE STREET.
so i parked and went to grab him, he ran into some bushes and started growling. some people came out of a house with dog treats and we lured him out. no microchip, no tags, nobody called the pound looking for him, so a week later he was officially MINE MINE MINE FOREVER!!!

He's never been fixed and I think that maybe that's just it? He's always had this thing where if he's tired and you try to move him he starts growling at you a little but lately he's doing it all the time! Then he catches himself and looks startled as if to say, "What am I doing growling at my human?" and the next thing you know he's kissing you cause he feels bad but the growling is really annoying and I don't know what to do about it.

B is doing quite well. I only wish I could get him to sit still with any kind of food anywhere near him never mind in his mouth/on his head to take a picture like that. That's hilarious. Benson bit me. He’s been having some behavioral problems the last few months (aggression when he’s tired) and on Tuesday morning he bit me in the face and I had to go to the ER and wound up with two stitches right through my top lip. I am so heartbroken. Going to contact a doggy therapist tomorrow but I’m really afraid this is age related and isn’t going to get better. This guy has been my source of comfort through so much the last few years and I’m beside myself. I am afraid to even let him sleep on or near me now. :(

Yes. I think it’s honestly a combo of doggie PTSD and age but it just sucks and my fucking mouth hurts! After he did it I felt with my tongue and my upper lip was split in half. The little bugger only has like 7 teeth left! I just really hope the behavioral therapist can offer some solutions.

so sorry to hear that. my little guy and i do a fair amount of play-fighting, and he likes to bite my nose. i never worry about him really biting me, but he's getting older too, and the thought has crossed my mind - what would i do next if he actually bit me?

Aw, V hopefully he never will. I grew up with dogs and plenty got older than B and I’ve never experienced this before. I do think this is a combo of doggie PTSD and old age. I cried on the phone to my therapist about it today, “But he’s my *sniff* little *sniff* cuddle buddy!” :/

my friends/family have had experience with dog old age and dementia-type symptoms and that is definitely an option. not a given that it’d work, but worth trying. he’s your little dude, he’s just in a different place in life

Thanks everyone. We took him to the vet yesterday and will get his ashes back in two weeks. He had a good long life but it's still never easy. Your words were all so kind. I shared him here since day one! <3
