OK Mordy, you want psychoanalysis? I can only go with what I've detected in myself, which is an increasing disdain for ignorance, reductive argument and silly absolutist statements. I set myself against these perils of thought now.

My notion is that every single ILXor went through that process - of radically amending and improving upon their slapdash youth - but few posted so visibly during the initial stage of maturation. Hence, my presence, validated by its copiousness, became in turn a validation of an idiocy they thought they and their rarefied internet community of cognoscenti had spurned.

I can only say that there were many who zinged with compassion, and that it worked, because well look at me now. One crazy customer hath turned vendor. Of course, it's a continuum - elements remain in both directions - and it is probably harmful to draw a complete binary between before and after, but the process of looking back at your own embarrassing actions and seeing them replicated - amplified - in the present, swamping the discourse of a place that finally - finally - doesn't make 'surprise sex' jokes or generic statements about reggae is, maybe, somewhat horrifying.

Oh wow, this is VERY Cardiacs at points, melodically speaking! Obviously with a great big indie-rock sheen & dull songwriting. I mean, it doesn't have the magic but it's got something of the spirit.

I always liked them, there seemed to be something very confused in the way they were conceived and marketed- like, on the one hand some of the stuff they did seemed to be trying to position them as 00's equivalent to Squeeze something and then they did press shots like this (NSFW).

picked up Joe Jackson, Squeeze too makes sense. for me the 70's/80's synthpop band that nobody's tried to follow up at all is foxx-era Ultravox! and I think that's telling (that Ultravox! were fucking amazing)

my favourite song of all time is soft machine's moon in june which is at the progrock end of jazz but is in the lineage

The Haim album is possibly my favourite of the year but I agree that it doesn't seem quite like AOTY material. Then again I don't think I've heard an album this year that immediately struck me as a legit classic like Kaleidoscope Dream or Let England Shake.

that album is mostly sublime, i have a lot of residual enthusiasm for that sullen, paranoid period of the uk album by bands scene 98-2000 when mezzanine, xtrmntr and kid a all troubled the upper reaches of the charts ('mbv arkestra' on a #3 lp.......)

yeah, that was an important time for british music, especially as it (may have) roused the greats to some of their greatest greatnesses (levitate -> the unutterable, confield, musick to play in the dark etc)

THE 1975 The 1975 - Why is this album 16 tracks long? It's...not as bad as I expected! I mean, obviously it's horrible overproduced electro-rock crap of some base and abysmal order, but...it's listenable, plenty of sonic texture. These are the worst track-titles in the history of music, though - that's inescapable. I seriously can't imagine what sort of a terrible, terrible person you'd have to be to call your songs by these titles, especially in aggregation. It comes off like a list of vacuous lifestyle tropes, a sort of consumer-catalogue of topics The 1975's shadowy record-label cabal told them to write about. "Write songs about...the city, money, sex, girls, clothing, maybe a sexual encounter, maybe settling down with a loved one...and keep the titles simple". Clearly these 1975 boys have the imagination of a breezeblock. Right, starting to really, really hate the music as well. I know it's IMPOSSIBLY NOW, and yet this knotty paradox compels me to rid myself of it before it might perplex me entirely! I shall listen until 'Sex' just to see if I really can rile myself up into some sort of homicidal rage. Oh Christ, dear God. I shouldn't be listening any more. This is utterly loathsome, the textures of 'The City' long forgotten amidst shambling priapic aural vomit. FUCK OFF. Jesus, this is the worst album in the entire list so far, just hideous. AND YET I still have to listen to 'Sex'. I will refrain from typing until it's done. *3 agonising minutes pass* This isn't about Poptimism. These cunts are Glasvegas remanifest. GLASVEGAS.
