three years pass...

imago- i've been meaning to ask u: why do u think you've had such a controversial posting history on ilx despite, to the lay-poster, appearing to be fairly innocuous? why so many bans, for instance? do you have a theory?

― Mordy , Tuesday, 23 July 2013 21:21 (8 minutes ago)

in brief: because i used to post like an irrepressible motormouthed idiot with a serious attention-seeking problem and a thoroughly deficient sense of humour nonetheless foisted into every nook of relevance, or indeed irrelevance

imago, Tuesday, 23 July 2013 22:27 (eleven years ago)

yes but gaucheness is about not-knowing, treesh is unusual in that he tries to anticipate the 'discourse' around him and since there are so few new ilx posters these days he knows everyone wants to talk about treesh, waterface etc

mundane peaceable username (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 22:38 (eleven years ago)

imo,

there are different levels of shall we euphemistically say generosity with oneself that one can employ on ilx

an approximate metric states that the higher the level of generosity, the more that perception of time is slowed. regular ilx posting, perversely, is an antidote to perspective. 7 years on friday i'll have been here, 7 years have taught me this

"gauche" does not apply outside of ilx where i'm sure you're awesome, wise, hip, whatever

but on ilx, "gauche" is a matter of visibility and time, for the game is to post as perfectly as possible. this is not true of many websites. it is ilx's blessing and its curse

Vintage LJ was full steam ahead, no time for questioning, let it all loose to the public square.

well yes, despite my convoluted justification of an ilx-specific "gauche" i'm ultimately conflating my former self and treeships's current, which i've already ascertained to be very distinct. hence, "gauche" was the wrong word (albeit picked, if we must recall, from the 'vague fug') - if diamond-splitting accuracy is what's required, perhaps the word is "effulgent"; nothing is obscured, lensed, deflected

you know, this isn't meant to be mean, whatsoever, call it tough love maybe - lj, i think that you really need to start taking some lumps/responsibility for this stuff. i mean, you've been googleproofed, you've been ytmnd'd, and getting us to ban you instead of just learning to exert some self-control doesn't seem to be the solution to your difficulties. you are capable of not pissing people off, but your most recent incarnation seems hell bent on trading old vulnerable LJ for new improved LBZC lapdog zingmaster LJ.

maybe just try posting for a while without some arch internet persona, and see how it goes for you.

obv if other mods feel differently, im not opposed to your request, i just think it wont help break the same cycle you seem to tend to go through.

OK Mordy, you want psychoanalysis? I can only go with what I've detected in myself, which is an increasing disdain for ignorance, reductive argument and silly absolutist statements. I set myself against these perils of thought now.

My notion is that every single ILXor went through that process - of radically amending and improving upon their slapdash youth - but few posted so visibly during the initial stage of maturation. Hence, my presence, validated by its copiousness, became in turn a validation of an idiocy they thought they and their rarefied internet community of cognoscenti had spurned.

I can only say that there were many who zinged with compassion, and that it worked, because well look at me now. One crazy customer hath turned vendor. Of course, it's a continuum - elements remain in both directions - and it is probably harmful to draw a complete binary between before and after, but the process of looking back at your own embarrassing actions and seeing them replicated - amplified - in the present, swamping the discourse of a place that finally - finally - doesn't make 'surprise sex' jokes or generic statements about reggae is, maybe, somewhat horrifying.

But the 'zinging with compassion' thing again - upon discovering any kind of gaucheness, be it gaucheness of cultural reductivity or gaucheness of copiousness (the latter, perhaps, being Treeship's preferred variant, albeit that it has nothing on my own peak output, and when combined with the former gives perhaps an insight into the valid reasons people had for getting pissed off with me - factor in my rampant oversharing and the equation is stretched to virtual calculator error), I must always try to channel it usefully rather than confront it - respond positively but demand strictures, as a tutor to a student, for to confront it and contemn it is to deny its owner the fair treatment I myself received at that stage - treatment which has enabled this graduation to maturity and position of experience.

Of course, if you don't believe in power-dynamics on the free, anarchic space of the Internet, you can disregard all of the above and simply believe that I irritated people quite a lot and ruined their lovely messageboard, except for when it was someone else ruining. Now I post less I ruin it less.

progging to the choir

zvookster, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 00:50 (eleven years ago)

yeah it was during that phase of slowing everything down or speeding it up 8 or 9 times. some people had sped up sunn o))) and it sounded *just like normal metal haha!* so the obvious thing to do was to slow sunn o))) down by the same factor and thus create the most evil music of all

i didn't really sing in a choir. belted it out like anything at hymn services, latin prayers (posh school), compline (posh school next to abbey) etc but never worked especially hard on my pitch & timbre. took singing lessons for a month once. not that i can't sing *at all* but i'm pretty rough

do you think your empathy for political radical liberation resistances are due to a) your other feelings of impotence within your own nominally democratic political structure, such that identification with these separatist/nationalist/socialist movements creates a sense of catharsis, b) symptomatic of your own freedom in a real democracy which you feel ethically compelled to extend to all ppl everywhere (nb this is the opposite of choice a), or c) some third unidentified reason? i'm specifically interested in the correlation (if any) between living in an ostensibly liberal western democracy and yet rooting for the basques, or ya know, body modification proponents. plz make statements as sweeping as possible - try to speak for all western leftists in the world if you can.

Mordy , Friday, 25 October 2013 21:48 (eleven years ago)

Absolutely a), absolutely not b). Oppression is everywhere, and community is under threat from forces that would atomise it into consumer demographics or worse. Democracy is a sham. Self-expression is a political fight against the reductive machinations of the exploiter, except when it's co-opted by the exploiter as a means to slyly force a consumer identity. Communities abstracting themselves from direct servitude in any cultural, financial or aesthetic sense is imperative

Self-expression is a political fight against the reductive machinations of the exploiter, except when it's co-opted by the exploiter as a means to slyly force a consumer identity.

wd argue that this "except" approaches 100 percent in cultures exposed to capitalist economics. there are possible resistances/subversions that don't rely on ideas of authenticity.

need to get into jazz, mr wins

my favourite song of all time is soft machine's moon in june which is at the progrock end of jazz but is in the lineage

there's so much jazz and i find it hard to get a semiotic handle on it. lots of improv, lots of fluid & rambling semi-composition. hard for me to think of that much beyond a transient experience - certainly not a 'song' or an 'album' (songs. albums.) to have 'definite opinions' about. shit's cool y'know but i find jazz best experienced in a live or ambient setting

know any good clubs?

The Haim album is possibly my favourite of the year but I agree that it doesn't seem quite like AOTY material. Then again I don't think I've heard an album this year that immediately struck me as a legit classic like Kaleidoscope Dream or Let England Shake.

― Matt DC, Monday, 25 November 2013 09:44 (11 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

It occurred to me the other day that the ILM Top 10 albums could end up being almost entirely comprised of shiny pop-rock and pop-country.

― Matt DC, Monday, 25 November 2013 09:45 (9 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I think it will be fascinating this year because there's so little consensus in the lists and the ones that are cropping up a lot so far aren't ILX favourites. From my own top 10 I can see Vampire Weekend, John Grant, Haim and Kacey doing well but I'm not sure what else will place.

It's an obvious suggestion but the Kremlin's interior churches and cathedrals are stunning.

Get some good Georgian / Azeri / Armenian food.

Might be worth checking out one of the markets on the outskirts for the realness.

Novodevichy Convent / Cemetery is somewhere I go to a lot. You can see where Gogol, Bulgakov, Shostakovich, etc were buried.

Worth checking Afisha for music listings.

the synths are exquisite

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:38 (ten years ago)

im not sure that massive attack really recorded two tracks better than this in the last 16 yrs but the poll hath spoken

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:39 (ten years ago)

yeah I'm on my third listen now, it really is quite beautiful

avicii usque ad arse (imago), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:44 (ten years ago)

fairly sure this is the best thing mos def ever did too although anyone with a better recall of fin de siecle backpack rap is invited to differ

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:48 (ten years ago)

my favourite massive attack song was always 'group four' with its grand kosmische gestures, shifting tonal sands and polychromatic piano stylings - this is quite possibly a more impressive sonic feat though

avicii usque ad arse (imago), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:52 (ten years ago)

that album is mostly sublime, i have a lot of residual enthusiasm for that sullen, paranoid period of the uk album by bands scene 98-2000 when mezzanine, xtrmntr and kid a all troubled the upper reaches of the charts ('mbv arkestra' on a #3 lp.......)

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 01:04 (ten years ago)

yeah, that was an important time for british music, especially as it (may have) roused the greats to some of their greatest greatnesses (levitate -> the unutterable, confield, musick to play in the dark etc)

how do u feel abt the band #the 1975#

Nothing less than the Spirit of the Age (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 21:12 (ten years ago)

THE 1975 The 1975 - Why is this album 16 tracks long? It's...not as bad as I expected! I mean, obviously it's horrible overproduced electro-rock crap of some base and abysmal order, but...it's listenable, plenty of sonic texture. These are the worst track-titles in the history of music, though - that's inescapable. I seriously can't imagine what sort of a terrible, terrible person you'd have to be to call your songs by these titles, especially in aggregation. It comes off like a list of vacuous lifestyle tropes, a sort of consumer-catalogue of topics The 1975's shadowy record-label cabal told them to write about. "Write songs about...the city, money, sex, girls, clothing, maybe a sexual encounter, maybe settling down with a loved one...and keep the titles simple". Clearly these 1975 boys have the imagination of a breezeblock. Right, starting to really, really hate the music as well. I know it's IMPOSSIBLY NOW, and yet this knotty paradox compels me to rid myself of it before it might perplex me entirely! I shall listen until 'Sex' just to see if I really can rile myself up into some sort of homicidal rage. Oh Christ, dear God. I shouldn't be listening any more. This is utterly loathsome, the textures of 'The City' long forgotten amidst shambling priapic aural vomit. FUCK OFF. Jesus, this is the worst album in the entire list so far, just hideous. AND YET I still have to listen to 'Sex'. I will refrain from typing until it's done. *3 agonising minutes pass* This isn't about Poptimism. These cunts are Glasvegas remanifest. GLASVEGAS.

Celebrate the start of the shooting season with some luxurious updates to your shooting attire. Look for the highest quality fabrics in warm shades of mink, chocolate and ochre.

Holland Cooper’s shooting coat is fully functional with an action back and sleeve to allow maximum movement and finished with wax details. A shooting waistcoat is a good piece to invest in. you could combine both of those affectations by not using words like television that combine greek and latin roots and make up your own words for them solely derived from sansrkit or amaraic

always like the way Evelyn Waugh pronounced gibberish with a hard g in the three-part(!) tv doc on him. I used to use that when training people at work and watch carefully for flickers, or on a couple of occasions, be amused at outright attempts to correct.

not that I blame them - it's a wanker's trick, but all pleasures are all we can afford in these pied times.

My sister's ex-husband's uncle used to pronounce video as 'veedeeo' and I was in a band with someone who used to pronounce demo as 'deemo'... however this was in Renfrewshire where people (used to) pronounce "seven" as "seeven", an affectation I once utilised on ILX for one of my wildly popular Bobby Gillespie skits, where Bob met Momus (Momus is from Paisley... which is in Renfrewshire).
