Local shopping centre plays a long list of songs on a loop, but it always seems to be Springsteen's 'Dancing In The Dark' that's playing, especially when I'm in the men's room and looking in the mirror when the song gets to the line "check my look in the mirror". Happened twice this fortnight so far.

I heard a live version of "Hello Cowgirl in the Sand" yesterday when I was shopping in an Italian gourmet food store, and I thought: this is really a depressing song, and no wonder I don't listen to Neil Young more, as good as he is. And I thought they really shouldn't be playing that song. I was tired and my allergies were bothering me, which was making me extremely emotionally hyper-sensitive. Let's all think about loss and disappointment and raw pain while we are trying to find something nice to carry home and eat.

This woman was walking down the sidewalk this morning talking on her cellphone and I heard her say "Oh really? Well, that's my number one hangover cure-- I have a fatty..." and then poof! She was out of earshot right after that word...so I was left wondering if she meant she chose to smoke a "fatty" to cure her hangovers or if she ate a fatty breakfast. I guess she was probably just advising her friend to eat scrapple.

boz scaggs is one of my top ten grocery store musical artists.
yesterday in a department store i heard:funky cold medina (tone loc) followed by copperhead road (steve earle) followed by you give love a bad name (bon jovi) followed by i don't know because i left but i was braced for anything.
there was a likeable thin middle-aged sales clerk with a handlebar moustache and a glinting ear who became animated and sang a little during copperhead road but then sank into a lugubrious state when bon jovi commenced, i didn't see what he got up to during funky cold medina because he was lurking behind a rack of jackets. he struck me as someone who is skilled at looking busy, which is a talent i envy.

According to Wikipedia Macca earns $400,000 a year from it. I don't hate the song exactly, but it's such a nothing song, who would have thought he'd coin so much from it?
Anyway, continuing with the Christmas theme in my local circle of Hell shopping centre: 'Step Into Christmas' by Elton John. Which somehow I find more tolerable than 'Wonderful Christmastime', but still, it's not a track I'd choose to listen to.

"I Was Born On Christmas Day" by Saint Etienne while I was shopping for pillows and an 8" square cake pan. This made me irrationally giddy and eager as it is my 2nd favorite Christmas song, and my best friend and I danced in a really sad and decrepit part of the Seasonal section together.
