http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-09-17-dark-souls-3-is-a-surprisingly-different-beast

Critical Arts are special attacks tailored to each weapon and available when you're two-handing. With a scimitar, for example, you launch into a dervish of blades, while a greatsword can be used to launch enemies comically high into the air. There's a magic meter sitting between your health and stamina bar, a throwback to Demon's Souls own approach, and performing critical arts as well as summoning spells eats into this. Restoring MP's more straightforward than the spice gathering of Demon's Souls, too - you've now got in your possession a second, blue estus flask that can be glugged to top up that bar.

it'll have been two years since the last dark souls came out by the time this is released, and four-and-a-half since the first one was released - it's not exactly fifa in the churning-them-out stakes

three games in one series, each with their own subtly different take on the template, and one offshoot with distinct differences in its combat system and overarching theme, all packed with content - i dunno, i'm happy to play them as regularly as they come out as long as the level of quality remains this high

so far it looks really good. a bunch of references to Dark Souls get spoiled in the above video btw.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 00:55 (eight years ago) link

i have seen some people freak out (not here of course) that it isn't a totally interconnected world like Dark Souls was. except Dark Souls wasn't. Undead Asylum was cut off from the rest of the world, so was Anor Londo, so was the Painted World.

i think the areas themselves will be bigger and more intricately designed. already just from watching this footage it looks 100x better than the starting Betwixt/Forest Of The Fallen Giants areas from DS2.

cannot wait to die.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 01:02 (eight years ago) link

i'm not worried about it. i know there's warping from the beginning, and Although I did love the parts of Dark Souls where it felt like you really might not be able to get back (like going down into Blighttown or the Great Hollow for the first time), I'm sure they know what they're doing.

I'm also super excited for pvp in this game. I never really did it in DS1 because i missed the learning curve (everyone still playing was already way too experienced for me to even learn from my mistakes, it seemed like), and by the time i wanted to go back and try, I didn't have XBL anymore. I kinda sucked at DS2 and didn't want to keep playing it after finishing, and played Demon's Souls offline on a borrowed PS3. But Bloodborne is where I finally did enough pvp to mentally relax and not care about dying (which is really 90% of it), and learn some of the psychological tricks (switching up attacks & weapons, not repeating attacks on people who will parry you, baiting people into getting parried, etc). Feel like this is going to transfer over to DS3 pretty well.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 15:46 (eight years ago) link

Worst parts of being into these games:

1) Looking at Reddit for info. I'd never actually looked at it before Bloodborne came out and the depressing parts definitely creep in.

2) Most people who make Souls videos are into terrible music.

3) Occasional hate mail from children when playing online.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2016 19:07 (eight years ago) link

Do these games have a story? And is there a larger, interconnected story?

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 4 March 2016 03:20 (eight years ago) link

they have a story but it's really up to the player to piece it together.

as for are the games connected there are many theories and i thought the world of 2 was largely completely disconnected from the world of 1 but 3 has a lot of things returning from 1 so who knows maybe we will be playing in the past or future of places we have been to before. the first game was tightly directed by creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, then he took on a more supervisory role for 2 so that he could make Bloodborne at the same time. 3 looks like it will be a return to form in many ways receiving his full attention and his intention for it to be the final game in the series. so chances are good there will be some overarching story themes concluded or fleshed out.

imo dark souls 1 starts when you are cursed/hollowed/undead. the main mechanic of the games - dying over and over - is part of the story. as a hollow you cannot die; that is your curse. this is the same with all of your non-boss enemies and many of the NPCs that populate the world. how this curse is tied into the king-queen-god-monsters whose thrones you usurp remains to be seen. the motivations for many characters, including the "helpful" ones who guide you, is unclear. the writing and voice acting is pretty great. then there are the major themes of the series: the meaning between Light and Dark, the flames, the bonfires and kindling, death and rebirth, etc.

i've beaten the two Dark Souls games multiple times and can barely grasp the story. there is a lot of symbolism and ambiguity there. if you want there are dozens of hours of lore analysis waiting for you on youtube.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 4 March 2016 06:42 (eight years ago) link

i think from software's games are some of the greatest examples of environmental storytelling in gaming history tbh

the uniqueness of our billionaires (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 4 March 2016 09:35 (eight years ago) link

what adam said, but basically the story is very vague and easy to miss/ignore (both the main one and those of the characters you meet). a lot of it has to do with reading the descriptions of the items you pick up.

i also love how it's done, partially because i like the option to completely ignore it much of the time. they provide just enough details to create atmosphere and let you fill in the gaps.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 4 March 2016 15:03 (eight years ago) link

there is massive complex deep lore if you want it and it's totally not necessary to know while you play.

Read a few conflicting reviews about world design and difficulty

Eurogamer's preview from the Japan build said it was slightly too easy, then the full Rich Stanton review from today said he wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty wasn't patched downwards because it's so brutal. Interesting to note he thought it spells out plot points and relies on fan service too much. I wonder if the localisation was by the same personnel as before?

The Eurogamer review is a bit too detailed re: locations and bosses for people who want to be surprised btw

Can I finish the Bloodborne DLC and late game in time to get DS3 on release then get burnt out by it, hm

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 4 April 2016 18:01 (eight years ago) link

he wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty WAS patched downwards ^

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 4 April 2016 18:02 (eight years ago) link

Read somewhere that one of the pre-release/review versions were easier in terms of low boss hp, at least in the beginning, but who knows. I'm sure there will be some early patches. I'm just looking forward to early days multiplayer chaos before everyone knows what they're doing.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Monday, 4 April 2016 18:24 (eight years ago) link

apparently the XBox version everyone is playing early is a preview build that will be fixed in a day one patch. all enemies do lower damage to the player in the preview build.

so far had very tough bits of levels but not really any tough bosses

alright i failed to get my brand new DS4 controller to work so i went KB+M (for now, hopefully someone will hack something to get this working)

but damn. this is already really great. i just fought a giant version of a common enemy in the other souls games and it was a lot of fun. i love having this speed in these games, this is going to be incredible.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 00:07 (eight years ago) link

art design is just draw dropping and dreamlike. i am just staring at corners for minutes looking at some strange beautiful scenery.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 00:08 (eight years ago) link

i've got to stop because i have work in the morning. but damn, this game is amazing. it LOOKS incredible, just the way light hits everything looks way more impressive than any Souls game. there is this cool green light left behind from your soul echoes in this game, which makes for some really cool lighting situations.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 01:56 (eight years ago) link

the game is hard too! ive been dying over and over in the beginning area for about an hour and a half, just loving it. the game looks amazing. that dragon draped over the entrance near the bridge is so cool. the combat/controls is flawless, perfect, all systems check. I would say Dark Souls: Championship Edition but the atmosphere in this is so thick and unique it really feels like a thing of its own. i love it!

i feel deprived.

the club moveset/weapon art looks pretty cool though?

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 15:38 (eight years ago) link

is there anything fundamentally new in DS3? that sounds like a disparaging remark but it's not meant to be - i'd gladly play it if it's just the same formula with new enemies and locations.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

the main new things are weapon arts, which are weapon-specific special moves and magic now has its own health bar and flask to refill it

i got past 1st guy deprived after ~20 tries, felt really epic. immediately bought some ugly armor and shield but still using club. backstabbing is little more tricky now that enemies guard their own back which is cool. parrying also not as easy because of how fast enemies are.

Picked this up this morning. Came home and played it for 30 minutes, then had to start packing to move house in two days. Hastily throwing away boxes of stuff without looking to close so I can justify playing more this evening.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:16 (eight years ago) link

I one-shotted that crystal lizard because I am a fat knight, having nearly been killed by an emaciated level 0 tutorial scrub hollow minutes before; when I remembered you could hold L1 to block in this game I was like uh isn't that cheating

Possibly a bit sick of tramping through marshes and swamps right now but the world design has been good so far, it's on a much bigger scale so it doesn't have the tightly-wound Firelink shortcut revelations of DkS1 but there have still been plenty of neat bits where you suddenly realise you can see a landmark you fought through earlier from a different place

I have a Zweihander and I'm going to start upgrading it so I can work towards the Bet The Farm On Killing Everything In The Room With One Incredibly Slow Swing playstyle. I haven't been beefcake since DkS1 and it feels weird throwing away all these hardcore dex weapons

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 21:36 (eight years ago) link

favourite moment in this so far is the way the camera's field of view subtly gets wider as you reach the approach to the undead settlement to give you a more epic view

the non-violent undead worshippers are creepy as fuck and i feel bad about killing them but i need those souls :(

It seems quite hard to farm early on, after having 8 grand burning a hole in yr pocket from gundex and the crystal lizard in the first 10 minutes

Interestingly Souls expert EpicNameBro knows nothing at all about this game and is doing a completely blind playthrough while cackling with glee

got through the first couple zones blind, really loving the aesthetic and the combat mechanics and basically everything. The town at the bottom of the tower is legit unsettling with all the bodies hanging from ropes. Playing from launch on ps4 has been great, everytime I'm human I'm tripping over summon signs and being invaded constantly. could not be happier at this pt. I am trying to go totally blind which is proving super hard (desperately want to know what weapons are better scaling off str so I can spend my precious upgrades the right way) but I sense that this will be a min/max multiple playthru kind of game like ds1 was

so in one day with this thing I have:

launched with deprived, tinkered with the face to make him look like an emaciated owl
killed the iudex, gundex, whatadix
chased off the dragon (not that difficult!)
killed the crystal lizard dragon
killed the mimic
killed both monstrosities
found my first normal crystal lizard
killed the fat guy
killed the blue knight
unlocked all the doors and freed the prisoner
activated the elevator
fully explored the first level and done a full kill sweep of the entire area
leveled to 21 and balanced the build so i can use magic, miracles, a bow and an axe
bought and used all the available armor/magic/weapons/items from the merchant
improved my sword to +2
have etched the first world layout/enemy placement firmly into my mind
got the banner
found Vorgul and have tried going after him three times now, I have yet to hit him more than twice

this is dark souls 3, day one

finally playing this tonight. it is amazing. you can't sleepwalk through this game but it just plays better and more user-friendly imo. i like this starting area on the wall and rooftops way more than some of early DS1.

the game is beautiful. so beautiful. they have turned up the dreamlike elements. this is HD dark fantasy at its peak. impossible architectures.

the speed is great but something to get used to after playing Dark Souls 1 so much recently. so much stamina! like 5x as much more something! why even level up endurance when you have that much? Dark Souls 1 you really have to be economical w your rolls but here you can dodge like a maniac, slashing your weapon. it's more button-mashy. but still good and strategic! best combat yet. i get trapped by my own impatience still but it gives you more leeway to make mistakes. still hard but more forgiving.

level design is lovely. everything is still a mystery and i am enjoying the flow of silent storytelling. again this is something Dark Souls sort of pioneered for the modern era and here it is done extremely well. i am getting some old fantasy Heavy Metal goth Edward Gorey or Frazetta feelings from many places. i want paintings of every screen of this game.

um...so that wasn't a boss fight. he respawns! so glad i have pyro.

this game is really really good. level design is top notch. better than Bioshock Infinite quality graphics. level design so far like Undead Asylum stretched out to 5x the size with few mobs and lots of jump scares. i love it.

parts of it remind me of Undead Parish too but this is way way better than the basement area w Capra Demon.

gonna call it a night. im still only at the 2nd bonfire but i feel like i've done so much. yeah the evangelist! i haven't played through Bloodborne yet but i remember seeing some of these types of enemies in that. i am really glad they did that, Bloodborne was great.

another cool new thing: roll hits? rolling/dodging actually can stun enemies now! i don't think that was ever a thing before, right?

Swamp covenant is the most fun. seems like many/most fights involve at least three phantoms and summons are so constant i had to take off the item to progress the story

True, but it pisses me off slightly they no longer refill your estus when you win a PvP invasion or successfully kill a boss.

Have they raised the max human players cap for this? I may have miscounted but it seemed at one time there were more than 3 phantoms at once. Though one of them may have been one of the scripted NPC invasions.

I love how chaotic things can get with mad phantoms, swamp covenant, npcs and regular enemies all getting at each others throats.

coolest thing that's happened so far is probably summoning a mad spirit just before that point, to see what they would do. they helped me clear out the whole area, then he finally attacked me once we got to the fog gate (i won).

got the red eye orb and have had some fun invasions so far, although it's too chaotic for me when there are two whites/yellows plus the host. much prefer duels.

I'd say practice blocking with a shield and dodging in the tutorial bit, and read a wiki mechanics page so you understand the status stuff like resistances, attributes, how weapon upgrades work etc

The forgiveness npc is actually in the same area you killed the onion knight. Unless perhaps you already found it and are only asking to know if it's worth the cost, in which case I have no idea because apparently I'm not a sinner yet.

Bummer. I wonder what sin is then since now it seems you can switch covenants willy-nilly and no one gives a fuck.

But that reminds me:

Just installing now. This is my first try at a souls game. Any tips for a noob?

Be careful who you attack, npc deaths are permanent and (not sure about DS3 but at least in the other games) can in a few cases make progression extremely difficult. Don't attack anything that's not visibly aggroed, normally if you can't lock on it's almost certainly not an enemy but there's no 100% reliable way to tell.

In other tips, learn to run past enemies, if you thoroughly explore a section and then die a little further down the road, don't bother killing every. single. thing. on the way to where you died. This is especially true for runs to the boss door, it'll do wonders for your enjoyment of the game.

chihuahuau, Monday, 18 April 2016 12:21 (eight years ago) link

Also, if you find the stats screen overwhelming or don't understand some gameplay mechanic and don't want to risk being spoiled by looking at a wiki, feel free to ask here.

central irithyl was a pain in the ass because of those pontiff knights. i found using a long reach weapon like arstor's spear works really well against them.

larry appleton, Monday, 18 April 2016 19:49 (eight years ago) link

i told myself i wouldn't summon at all for bosses this time, but made my first exception for the Crystal Sage. i was using up too much Estus getting to the boss, and then for the fight itself i was like 'ok i get it' but kept getting stuck in a hurricane of magic when trying to find the real sage. it seemed like they were encouraging co-operation on that one.

any opinions on whether i should do the Cathedral of the Deep or Farron's Keep first? so far i've been messing around in the Keep swamp, trying to figure out the map and having some truly ridiculous invasions (fat-rolling after people as they try to fat-roll away in the water).

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Monday, 18 April 2016 19:57 (eight years ago) link

xp it is turning out to be a pretty good farming spot though - just one more level up to strength and i can use the cool-looking dark sword I found in *REDACTED*

I did cathedral of the deep first, didn't regret it for a second

the world’s youngest hyper-polyglot (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 18 April 2016 20:03 (eight years ago) link

any opinions on whether i should do the Cathedral of the Deep or Farron's Keep first?

cathedral is a massive zone with lots of shortcuts and loot and a relatively easy boss, i think it's intended to be the lower level step but probably doesn't really matter (fwiw i did farron's first because i didn't realize cathedral was a thing until i tried to enter irithyll.

i'm also playing this on easy-mode via summoning for bosses. about half the utility of souls games for me is pvp so sometimes it's hard not to get there as fast as possible. i grinded ds1 through without summons and i don't always have the stomach for that approach anymore

down and down we go (art), Monday, 18 April 2016 20:04 (eight years ago) link

OK, so an hour into my first DS game, and I am so unbelievably shit at this. After getting my ass whooped by a crystal monster thing I decided to leg it instead and press on. Maybe I'm meant to come back to that? I dunno. Since then I've spent ages trying to do this first boss guy who has an FLCL-type snake coming out of his head halfway through the fight. Just as I think I'm edging nearer to victory I panic and start button mashing and drink health instead of pressing RB, and then die. And this is like the first level/ tutorial guy? JFC

Roll, roll, roll, hit, roll roll roll roll roll hit, roll roll die.

Not gonna throw in the towel tho, the game's too beautiful for that, all the moody vistas and cool as fuck character design already makes me think things will get spectacular down the line. I'm sure I'll get the knack, this brick wall's gotta give way before my head splits open against it.

barbarian radge (NotEnough), Monday, 18 April 2016 20:50 (eight years ago) link

Roll, roll, roll, hit, roll roll roll roll roll hit, roll roll die.

you'll have more luck if you

evaluate, engage, test the water, pull the rug, flip the hourglass, roll, tip the hand, cross the picket line, listen to your heart, carry the zero, crack the knuckles, crack the whip, contest the convention, roll, listen to the opponent's heart, bend the moral arc toward justice, three deep breaths, then hit

Karl Malone, Monday, 18 April 2016 21:01 (eight years ago) link

fear is the mid-killer - keeping a cool head is absolutely crucial in dark souls. take your time, study your opponent's move set, and learn their tells - everyone you fight will telegraph their moves in one way or another

dunno what your rolling strategy is but for me the key was realising that, counter-intuitively as far as I was concerned, often the best strategy is rolling towards your enemy when they attack, under their guard, delicately sticking a knife in their ribs and then dancing away from their response. rinse, repeat, enemy dead.

the other thing is that you might not realise it yet but chances are every time you die you've learned one more thing about your enemy's weaknesses. dark souls wants you to get better, it's just a harsh and inscrutable teacher a lot of the time!

the world’s youngest hyper-polyglot (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 18 April 2016 21:02 (eight years ago) link

or y'know what Karl said

the world’s youngest hyper-polyglot (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 18 April 2016 21:02 (eight years ago) link

i know that's what you're supposed to do, but in practice i usually end up making the sharp intake of breath/hissing noise while yelling "nooo! noo! NO! aaaghhh! NO! phew, phew....NO!!" and rolling around

Karl Malone, Monday, 18 April 2016 21:03 (eight years ago) link

these games are amazing at occasionally making you feel like a world-class boxer, picking apart your enemy's defences with clinical precision

more often though I end up trapped in a corner and get stabbed to death by some embarrassingly low-level scrub I've killed a thousand times before

the world’s youngest hyper-polyglot (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 18 April 2016 21:10 (eight years ago) link

for the first guy, stay close for your hits, back way off and then rinse repeat. you don't want to go toe to toe but if you pick your spots you should be able to cautiously chip him apart.

ulysses, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:03 (eight years ago) link

also, don't worry about the crystal dragon; that is indeed for later.

ulysses, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:04 (eight years ago) link

NotEnough don't get frustrated. first time i played Dark Souls i spent my first hour dying over and over to the regular bad guys. just see every death as a learning experience. practice makes perfect. fighting a boss is about learning how to read his attacks and how to dodge them and finally how to then land an attack as soon as possible. you will start dodging slightly earlier than necessary in order to land more hits. you should only ever focus on hitting a boss 1 time per dodges, any more at your experience level will leave you vulnerable to counter-attack. practicing will teach you the tells. you will start to feel victory when the boss's HP is lower than last time when you die. every time you play you get better, these games reinforce this attitude. and of course if you're having trouble don't forget level/equipment grinding after all this is a JRPG.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 18 April 2016 22:49 (eight years ago) link

the crabs are insanely OP. i just got there and i keep dying. i like the forest area here though it seems a bit too bright.

OK, so an hour into my first DS game, and I am so unbelievably shit at this. After getting my ass whooped by a crystal monster thing I decided to leg it instead and press on. Maybe I'm meant to come back to that?

That's sounds about right for a first experience, honestly. FWIW, that lizard is beatable right off the bat with some classes at least but you actually learnt the right lesson there: if something seems too hard and there's an alternate path unexplored, ignore the former and take the latter.

Quoting myself:
I wonder what sin is then since now it seems you can switch covenants willy-nilly and no one gives a fuck.

Turns out that's completely wrong and a formerly helpful npc has just threatened to kick my arse next time we meet. Haven't check with the forgiveness npc yet, maybe it's reversible.

SPOILERS obviously:

I don't think so, I don't know who you're talking about there.

It's Sirris (?), the woman from I assume the Blue Sentinels, she appears sometimes inside the shrine next to the fire keeper and she offered to help me during boss fights (this after I had already got the red eye orb and successfully invaded other players) and eventually I did summon her for the Cathedral boss but after I found and joined the Rosaria covenant she considers me an enemy now. Gonna check with Velka next time I play.

i realized that my souls play follows a pattern whereby early in the game i am very methodical and safe and i try and survive as long as possible and solo bosses but by hour ~20 i hit new zones it's really "wheeeeee" as i hurl myself toward progress with reckless abandon. both playstyles have merits imo

i think i'm starting to get the hang of parries in this game, you have to do it like exactly when they start the swing (after whatever wind-up the weapon may or may not have). but it's still tricky depending on which type of attack is used, and pvp is a whole 'nother thing.

Red-eyed knight causing you grief? Must have died about ten times in that first room before finally killing it and then dying to the very next enemy. Then did a few suicide runs and got a bunch of titanite chunks, guess it's time for lv 7+ weapons.

only played for a bit in the castle - the knights getting buffed by the spellcaster fucked me up until I got their rhythm down, then I was getting humiliated by overpowered basic enemies, so I went to the king's gardens and ended up getting wrecked by two dragon-headed mutant monsters :(

i'll say one thing though, as a mostly melee-focused character the last few areas have made me super-glad i upgraded my bow a lot and stocked up on arrows - having a ranged option when I need it has been u&k to progress

I got their rhythm down

Way ahead of me there, even the not-red-eyed ones wreck me almost everytime. I can't parry for the life of me, guarding drains all my stamina in a couple of hits, and dodge rolling never lets me actually hit them. They're pretty great!

I just leg it now. And there I was thinking I might be over-leveled just yesterday...

damn aldrich was hard! i was in a loop of getting summoned to help ppl with him and then summoning someone to help me who would then die halfway leaving the boss hp rly high. finally soloed him, got him down to a fraction then he did the arrow bs but i yolo'd and killed him as i died. still counted, phew

i finally figured out co-op and have had some fun sessions. i really love the High Wall and Undead Settlement areas (maybe my favorite in the series) so replaying those with extra people is fun and turns boss fights into OP battles with magic spells and fire flying everywhere. got summoned to the Dancer of the Boreal Valley secret boss fight once and we got it down to 50% but that boss is TOUGH.

still amazed by the new enemies that pop up. for all the stuff they take from Dark Souls 1 and 2 the new monsters are some of the best they have ever made.

I finally got to the big pvp spot after Pontiff, so I'm super happy to be getting regular duels. btw the Abyss Watchers were easy, right?

lol no i'm having a lot of trouble w it. got any tips?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 22:34 (eight years ago) link

Well, for the first phase, you just have to stick it out until they start fighting each other, and pick off whoever's alone. For the second, a 100% shield helps a lot, and it's very possible to circle/roll behind him to get backstabs. Also I was using a fast weapon, which helps because they stagger very easily.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 22:39 (eight years ago) link

Btw apparently by wandering into the dungeon in Irithyll I inadvertently broke two or three NPC quest lines. Nbd as this happens to me in every game and the triggers are so inscrutable and unforgiving.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 22:41 (eight years ago) link

you just have to stick it out until they start fighting each other, and pick off whoever's alone

Only one of the watchers is the actual boss of the first phase, damaging the others won't speed up the fight but the red-eyed "ally" can help by distracting the boss (and the damage he deals to the boss does count).

You can tell who's who by locking-on: the extras will display a regular enemy health bar over their model, the actual boss won't because his health bar is at the bottom.

played some co-op helping with bosses and red phantoms. it is very fun! a whole new dimension of play from single player really. going through the level and seeing dead enemies and wondering where your host is, trying to keep them alive through the whole level.

back at the shrine i realized i had several unburned undead bone shards so now my estus is up to where it should be. about to try again. i love the forest you go through to get to this boss fight, it reminds me (as much of this game does) of the oolacile ancient forest DLC from the first Dark Souls.

i've been grinding pvp and boss battles to get all my stats up to 20 across the board. it's a dumb way to play but it's what i always seem to do.

ulysses, Friday, 29 April 2016 19:58 (eight years ago) link

i'm only leveling vigor, endurance, str, an dex.

so i had a duel yesterday against a guy who was spookily good at parrying. he didn't even have a weapon, just parried every attack i made without fail. even the katana.

also the new thing is apparently using the caestus for parries, because it's pretty much instantaneous (DS1 style). much easier than using a shield, unless you're already used to the shield timing.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 29 April 2016 20:15 (eight years ago) link

I also grind a lot of souls by co-oping, I finished NG at lv 99 but haven't started NG+ yet, I've been stocking up on upgrade materials and re-visiting some areas for loot that wasn't there the first time I went through, like Havel's set and Greirat's ashes.

chihuahuau, Friday, 29 April 2016 21:51 (eight years ago) link

finally took down the Abyss Watchers. my strategy of trying to stay out of range for the 2nd phase wasn't working so I started attacking less w pyromancy and more w melee attacks, thrilled to discover that in the 2nd form he is susceptible to attack stun, letting me get 2-3 hits in. pyromancy is just too slow sometimes...

i think i'm maybe 2-3 zones out from the final boss but i've basically given up advancing in favor of invading/fight clubbing after pontiff bonfire, in anor londo, and with aldrich faithful. as much as people complain about pvp in 3, i'm really enjoying it. i love these games in the early days when summons are still basically instant despite advancement (and there's still a decent distribution level wise before everyone gravitates toward whatever the preferred pvp level shakes out to be)

Is it just me, or are the bosses a lot easier this time around? I was able to kill nine of them on the first try, including the "final" boss.

good for you! im at Aldrich just getting killed a lot and working the health bar down inch by inch and slowly learning all the attacks. the shower of spears killed me a bunch when i was being super-aggressive so i started backing off and the pillars turn out to make great shields. the bosses in this are at least 2nd hardest. i was able to first-try many of 2's bosses but none of 3's. so far most of 3's bosses have stumped me for an evening or so and then i'll revisit it and figure out some new strategy that unlocks another chunk of the boss health bar.

nameless king has a 3rd boss added to it... the camera

truuue. from watching videos, i was making the first phase harder than it needed to be (in terms of camera + the downward fire attack) by getting under the dragon/behind the head.

btw i'm really starting to hate the Dark Sword in pvp. the other night i fought the same person three times trying to find a counter...the first time i walked into their R1 spam, the second time i tried to parry unsuccessfully, the third time he black crystal-ed out as soon as he came into my world.

anyone up for ilx pvp on saturday during the day?

i'm hoping to be online saturday afternoon, so this sounds good. if i have time enough to farm chunks for my last slab-worthy weapon i'll respec to luck and start NG+ then try and push to the high wall bonfire so i can host several phantoms for a proper fight club.

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:18 (eight years ago) link

high wall it is. password: ilx (if that's not too short?)

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:32 (eight years ago) link

sounds good, i'm tentatively suggesting a 2pm cst start if that sounds good. i believe all levels can attend if we use pw as well

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:37 (eight years ago) link

I can do that. I'll be available at least 2-3.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 12 May 2016 19:55 (eight years ago) link

i was range attacking Aldrich w pyromancy and my dark shield on to block incoming magic missiles then Aldrich, Devourer of Souls just spammed that strong magic blast at me in double shots killing me quickly. by then all the pillars were smashed so there was no place to hide. i guess dodge roll into them?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 12 May 2016 22:34 (eight years ago) link

seems like staying close is an option u can dodge roll around him to avoid the rain it is cast in a half-circle it seems?

i really want to hit more than twice but he does that raising up the staff to pound the ground/make a purple cloud

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 12 May 2016 22:40 (eight years ago) link

his attacks are actually pretty slow and easily telegraphed but i can't seem to not get trapped by him doing multiple attacks at once. rain + heavy magic blasts how am i supposed to doge this?

fuck this rain of arrows

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 12 May 2016 22:52 (eight years ago) link

the arrows i think you have to just run around until it stops esp in phase 2 where it follows you around and side roll the 2 magic blasts. he is a pain in the ass, if you see him raise up the bow just start running. i had trouble w/ most bosses but oceiros and champion gundyr were easy for me

looking forward to dlcs, this game continues to deliver

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:08 (eight years ago) link

the linearity bums me out. didn't bother me in bloodborne but every souls game gave you choices of where to go. next playthrough i'm gonna do dancer/lothric castle first, thats about the only change-up it allows

am0n, Friday, 13 May 2016 16:02 (eight years ago) link

the level design is flatter and less creative than ds1, definitely, but i felt like there were at least a few other opportunities for choice as far as zone selection went (farron vs cathedral, optional zones like ashen lake and second gundyr fight) and i still much prefer the design over ds2 or demon's souls

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:12 (eight years ago) link

really? it's not DS1 in terms of being able to skip large parts of the game, but it feels like there are more branching options than Bloodborne. once you hit the first swamp you can go to Road of Sacrifices/Cathedral or to Farron Keep/Catacombs/Smouldering Lake, although i guess you need to do both routes to get to Irithyll. Then you can go to the Dungeon or A*** L****, and there are also the dragon peak/Untended Graves Side areas.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:12 (eight years ago) link

xp

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:12 (eight years ago) link

the side areas are little branches but you can't deviate from the main route. the world feels more of a piece in 3 but that one-way funneling hurts the replayibility for me. ds1 you can go straight to the worst parts if you want, turn pve into different challenges. the choices this time feel more illusory

am0n, Friday, 13 May 2016 16:22 (eight years ago) link

i even liked demons/ds2 hub setup because you could do the spokes in whatever order. just my preference. ds1 went just far beyond, i guess they'll never recapture that.

am0n, Friday, 13 May 2016 16:47 (eight years ago) link

ok i get that. i like that each area is pretty twisty and intricate, but i suppose it's true that each playthrough is going to look more or less the same. i wonder if the speedrunners will figure out any crazy tricks.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 13 May 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link

the areas themselves are expansive which helps. the cathedral/castle areas are massive and they did a good job of utilizing the vertical space too, ground to rooftop

i got the shrine rooftop jump down where you run up the tree and jump up before you've bought the tower key. hope they don't patch that or the butt glitch

am0n, Friday, 13 May 2016 20:26 (eight years ago) link

yeah i get what you are saying wrt world linearity but i wouldn't trade it for smaller areas, which seems like it would be the trade-off they would have had to make. the first couple of areas (High Wall and Undead Settlement) are so great i really don't mind the linearity and the game opens up pretty soon anyways once you get to the Dilapitated bridge/tree boss/that whole area that connects to the also forest and the catacombs.

started a new game yesterday to try the default knight. it was way easier than my pyro build! they give the knight some really good equipment early on.

god, High Wall is so beautifully designed. every time i go back to visit i just love it, the lighting, the weird rooftops, etc. it's up there with Undead Burg from DS1 tho personally i like the DS3 levels far more (both art-wise and monster-wise).

jamiesummerz, Tuesday, 31 May 2016 11:52 (eight years ago) link

my brother and I have been talking about this a bit as we were in the same position: the rhythm's slightly different. more focus on defence, depending on your build. bonfires/lamps a lot more frequent in this particular instalment. i was hit quite hard by loss of sidestep and R1/R2 combos, and it's taken me a while to get used to shield and two-hand wielding/special moves. I mean you can have a Bloodborne style build, but I'm not sure that half the fun isn't clanking round in armour with a large claymore. levelling's a more subtle and meaningful affair too. I'd say just jump in.

I never found the, um, way to kill the angel in the swamp. Too stressful running around there.

I don't think this is going to be a very good place for invasions (especially compared to the last dlc), as almost every moment is a gauntlet or set piece. You're always running through trying to avoid lasers/arrows/fire/tons of enemies, and an invader could probably just come in and do nothing until the host dies from the environment.

really happy with how the new DLC turned out. feels really quite expansive and it's surprising me with all these different environments. the Inner Ring is fast becoming one of my favorite levels, that sun-dappled, mossy, ruined lost city is simply gorgeous. the guys with the giant holes in their chest are a lot of fun to fight, and taking out the turtley monks while dealing with them is a fun challenge. the giant headless guys are fun to fight too! they keep killing me but they are fun! i found another swampy area, full of bits of ruins sticking out, those giant ghost archer summoners roaming around in the distance. i really like the scale of it all, feels like they are going out with a bang!

hell yeah, that insta-kill is sweet. once again the level layout there is phenomenal, that bridge being a perfect place to plan your attack, after you clear out the lightning guys of course.

i like how the patrolling headless are set up so that one of them is in front. the first time i entered this area i saw one and was like "oh hell no, not one of these guys". and then the other two showed up! Dark Souls has always excelled at moments like that, where things seem pants-shittingly impossible.

Did it! Had to do it the old-fashioned way learning every move and how to deal with it, but I honestly think it's way more doable solo than with phantoms. When there are multiple players its movements are much less predictable, and harder to react to.

i'm having a great time with DS3, no surprise. i'm most of the way through the undead village portion of the game (the area the demons fly you to after the second giant beast hound boss).

most quintessential dark soulsy moment, so far: sloooooowly taking down the dragon from afar with tons of crappy wooden arrows, only to get torn apart by a mimic as i tried to claim the treasure from the building the dragon was resting on top of.

i am trying to figure out whether i should go ahead and do the fight with the giant cursed tree, or try to ascend the tower and take out the crazy watchman who can shoot out giant arrow/bolts/trees/spears, whatever they are. meanwhile, everyone is throwing up

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:06 (six years ago) link

I highly recommend the tower first, but, um, keep an open mind.

The giant cursed tree is always the hardest boss in the game for me for some reason, and the only one I routinely try to summon for. Having a weapon with some vertical action/range can help.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:17 (six years ago) link

it's remarkable how widely ppl's experience of these games vary. the tree boss was a relative breeze for me each time. my worst boss was the one grimes is fighting there, the guy on the rooftops. if it took me literally 50 tries the first time i would not be surprised. i remember being baffled by my friend who nearly quit demons souls because he couldn't beat tower knight and then (twice) beat maneater on 1st try. also interesting to me how sometimes after eventually beating a very hard boss it's like the code is cracked and i can then beat them easily on subsequent occasions, e.g. ornstein and smough

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 21:32 (six years ago) link

Yeah, it's so subjective! I've never had a problem with the one you're talking about.

I think I have an easier time with the humanoid ones, and a harder time with the ones that are so big that when you're close to them, there are parts that are off-camera (so you really need to be observant in order to see their tells and not get smushed).

uuuugh, real life and dark souls just collided in the most intensely frustrating way. I went to the tower and resolves the spear thrower situation, then kept going and took out the monster thing circling the fire. I thought about home boning to level up, but decided to keep going a bit further. I got in over my head with the evangelists but managed to whittle them down to the last one, no estus flasks left, no stamina, evangelist down to one last hit, they’re winding up and I’m literally going “aaaaagghhhh!!” IRL and then - the fucking power went out in our building! the Deep Battle Axe is a great weapon. its a nice reward for fighting the mimic and can probably last you the entire game if you want. it does great base damage and the dark bonus makes it hit twice as hard. i think pretty much everything in the game is vulnerable to dark.

the Tower Key area becomes important later on once you visit the Cathedral of the Deep (a good contender for the best level in the game). if you revisit the area later on there is a story event related to the Onion Knight.

you can also climb up the tree and jump onto the roof to get up there are the very start of the game. it's a pain though, you have to run up the tree just right.

Fine, you happy, sticklers?

I did more exploration of Spookytown Settlement. It kind of spoils you with two bonfires more or less right at the start, so I'm wary of going too deep into town, but I'm doing OK looking around and killing creepy things. The most awkward thing this game does is make you feel like you are cheesing when that's often what the enemies do - hide in ambush, shoot/attack from a distance, etc. Like I said, I keep coming across places that seem designed for you to stick around and pick enemies off at range. Or, for example, aggro enemies chased me to the arena where the ice dog was, but they didn't follow me in. I felt kind of silly attacking the blue knight with glowing eyes from in there (where he cornered me), so I eventually just went out and finished him myself.

A couple of questions. It appears leveling up weapons here is different than in the first game. I've got my claymore up to +3, but I think to get it further I need ... titanite slabs? Is that right? And then the gem infusions, is that like enhancements in the first game? I like the claymore, but I'm considering at least one alternative with a faster moveset, at the least as a backup.

Also, rolling (as usual) seems a pretty important component of battle; even early on there have been several enemies (like those lothric knights) that seem to resist the standard circle-and-slash method of battle. As a knight I am relatively heavy and (I think) kind of fat rolling. Should I start focusing a few more stats on ... vitality? To bring my weight down? I don't really know what levels mean in this game, but I'm hovering around 27 right now. Been putting souls into vigor, endurance and strength, mainly, but was thinking of dumping points into dexterity, too, not necessarily for the fabled "quality" build, but just to give me a couple of other weapon options, like the lothric sword or the uchikatana.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 December 2019 14:17 (five years ago) link

You definitely want to keep your equip load under 70% in this game, so either unequip some things or raise your vitality to just enough.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 December 2019 16:19 (five years ago) link

The claymore is a lot heavier than your starting sword, that probably tipped it. Also if you have multiple weapons equipped etc.

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 14 December 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

Does upping vitality one or two points make much of a difference for weight capacity?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 December 2019 18:08 (five years ago) link

Okay, leveled up my dexterity a couple of points so that I could use the lothric knight sword. what it has in more speed and lighter weight it lacks in sledgehammer power, like the claymore. think I will switch back to the claymore for now and maybe just work on upping endurance and vitality. not sure I really need to level strength or dexterity any higher than they are now, which I think is 18.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 December 2019 22:08 (five years ago) link

I like the fast travel in this a lot, makes me more likely to take risks, since I know it's pretty easy to pop back and forth. Also, kinda curious that this game has two overpowered enemies so early in the game, the sword master ninja and the blue Lothric knight with glowing red eyes. Both are super easy to avoid, but the fact that they're there at all seems like an invitation.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 15 December 2019 23:52 (five years ago) link

Fast travel right out of the gate kinda ruined this series a little bit imo. Ruins the sense of familiarity with the world and how things fit together. Also eliminates that dangerous feeling of being lost in the depths or wherever else and miles away from a safe haven.

circa1916, Monday, 16 December 2019 01:23 (five years ago) link

chihuahuau, Monday, 16 December 2019 01:40 (five years ago) link

circa1916, Monday, 16 December 2019 01:58 (five years ago) link

And Demon’s was the only precursor and had that central hub that you would just transport to different worlds from, kind of a different thing, so not like there was a heavy precedent.

There was that thread recently where several people mentioned how they could mentally walking through the Dark Souls map. Probably nobody doing that with 2 or 3.

circa1916, Monday, 16 December 2019 02:03 (five years ago) link

The original Dark Souls map is really well thought out, but I don't miss it too much, since each area in DS3 is still dense and flows impressively. Like, even that first part, it might not ultimately connect the same way to Undead Settlement (which is where I'm at now) the way the first game connected to, say, the Depths and Blighttown, but you still get a pretty good sense of the layout, and there are lots of precipices and balconies that let you pear toward new destinations. And even if the map is not the same, the character design in this one is really creepy and cool.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 16 December 2019 02:33 (five years ago) link

DS3 is really good! Superior in a lot of ways to DS1. But I can mentally map out that first one and can’t remotely do that with DS3 even though I’ve played it more recently. That sense of geography was a really cool thing that I was sad to see get left behind.

circa1916, Monday, 16 December 2019 03:13 (five years ago) link

I can with 3, just because you have to for proper invading (except for the poison swamp, because f that place). But I agree, it's definitely not as elegant as 1. Although it is cool that you can at least see most of the areas in the distance.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 16 December 2019 05:36 (five years ago) link

Man, there is so much to explore and find in Undead Settlement, it's hard to believe this is just the (more or less) second area. I found ... not a guide but an outline somewhere online that lists stuff to keep an eye out for in each area but not exactly where to find it, which is a nice relatively spoiler-free way to know when to keep exploring. I haven't fought the boss yet (though I know where the arena is), haven't fought the blue ice monster yet, killed the fire monster, made friends with the lady in the sewers, found Onion Knight, even got a ride to Mound of Bodies Land in a cage (to no discernible benefit yet). Made friends with the arrow-shooting giant only after I took all that loot while he shot at me. (That's where I got the white birch to belatedly befriend him, Angela's Ashes or whatever, a few other goodies.) Some enemies are getting stronger, but so far nothing so bad I avoid it. I finally replaced some of my knight gear with lighter stuff to get my load below 70%, but I also have found a couple of cool rings that make things easier, like the one that regenerates stamina faster. In the first Dark Souls I almost always wore that magic shimmering green shield that did much the same thing. Stamina seems to be key when you've got a powerful weapon.

Key lessons learned from the first game: kiting enemies and, when needed, simply running past them. No doubt will come in handy whenever I get around to playing Bloodborne.

I still think playing these games totally blind would be a fool's errand. You would miss so much. Fizzles, Friday, 20 December 2019 13:17 (five years ago) link

Aren't there a lot of multiplayer online games?

Sure, but not like this. They're all specifically set up to be competitive multi-player games, with things like 'balance' and preset characters. Boring! In these games the multiplayer feels like this side feature that almost shouldn't be happening, which makes it a lot more exciting.

I don't know of another game that lets me take the character that I built, go into someone else's world while they're playing through the game on their own, and engage in this meta-game where you can hinder or help. And after you've played the main game and it's old news, it's a whole new level of thrills to play against humans (with the odds stacked against you, because that's how invasions work) and use the level, whatever tricks and psychology you can figure out, etc.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 20 December 2019 16:04 (five years ago) link

I do like how there are multiple levels to these games. You can play them offline, unkindled (or whatever they call it in DSIII, embered?), you can play it kindled and get different benefits (different stats/abilities/storylines, summoning NPC phantoms), you can play it online and open yourself to help but also invaders (who all have to be overpowered assholes, right? Because why else would they invade?), you can change your equipment, stats, etc., all of which change not just gameplay but often story. It is pretty neat. But yeah, the reason I don't play online, even if I had PS Whatever, is because I just assume that's where hardcore gamers ready themselves to gank you at a moment's notice, which doesn't sound fun to an engaged but (erm) casual player like me. Novel, sure, but fun? I'll save that for watching others do it in youtube clips or whatever.

One think I don't get about said videos is that the players are often carrying a huge pile of souls, often in the tens of thousands, if not more. Is this because they've been playing so long there is nothing more they need to spend the souls on? Or is it sort of a humblebrag? Or is it a taunt, like, try to take me on, I am so good I carry a balance of 199,283 souls and I am not worried about losing them. Or do you not lose them if you die to an invasion?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 December 2019 17:18 (five years ago) link

Souls just don't matter after a point. If I have an invasion build that's designed for a certain level range, I'm not going to upgrade anymore so the only thing that souls are used for is refilling consumable items (bombs, arrows, charms, etc). And souls are easy come, easy go.

(who all have to be overpowered assholes, right? Because why else would they invade?)

This is what I'm trying to explain. While sure, there are some invaders who get off on easy kills or never losing, the game is designed so that the invader is at a disadvantage.

1) Invaders have half the estus of hosts
2) Invaders have 30% less max health
3) The matchmaking is weighted so that you're much more likely to be invaded if you've already summoned white phantoms to help you. Solo embered hosts only get invaded if there are no groups in the area (or the host as willingly used the dried finger item).
4) Hosts can still summon blue spirits to help after they've been invaded (and whites).

So most of the people invading in DS3 do it because it's a challenge, the odds are against you. The real overpowered gankers are the hosts who summon their overleveled friends (using a password), sit around at the bonfire or having already cleared all the enemies out, and wait for invaders to kill in a 3v1 or 4v1 (and they usually disconnect if they start to lose). It's extra satisfying to win in that scenario because it's so difficult.

I dunno, it seems to me that with players good enough to beat the game blind, or with voice only commands, or with bongos, or at level 1 with bare fists or with no hits or whatever, whatever disadvantage they are at as invaders seems kind of moot. It'd be like playing a pro ball player in HORSE, and starting with HORS already, and them playing in stiff, heavy dress shoes with one hand or something. They're still going to kick my ass.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 December 2019 19:52 (five years ago) link

Still ... fun to watch! And the beauty of these games is that that online aspect is entirely optional.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 December 2019 19:53 (five years ago) link

1v1, totally. But if you summoned 2 or 3 people to help? That takes some doing even if they're all new players, because you can't attack them all at once no matter how good you are.

Also I think the whole challenge/speed run thing is a totally different skill set than pvp. Both fun, but one doesn't really translate to the other.

I was super sloppy fighting the Crystal Sage (or whatever), but once I realized my shield was doing nothing and went two handed, and after a long break and a couple of drinks, it wasn't so bad. It looks like there are a couple of options now, Farron Keep (another swamp?) and Cathedral of the Deep, which seems to be guarded by some real PIA enemies.

Lol, there are lots of options, it seems, and there are suddenly a bunch of fires in quick succession. But I did explore some bits sort of piecemeal. Found these lizard things that gave me massive blood loss, found some more crystal lizards, killed a crystal ice monster that I think must have been backed into a corner and easily killed, found these skeleton things that barfed on me. Craziness. Oh, also found an old coot who tricked me into getting sucked into that painting from the first game again. At first I was worried I'd be trapped, but all the warnings (and another bonfire) hinted and allowed me to get the fuck out of there.

OK, so the evil winter wonderland in the painting was, predictably, part of the DLC. I suspect I am indeed supposed to wait before taking it on. Which means ... onward to somewhere else! I think my only options remain the swamp or barfing skeletons, so I guess barfing skeletons it is.

Cathedral of the Deep section seems to be ramping up difficulty, at least in terms of speed and number of enemies.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 December 2019 21:37 (five years ago) link

Ha, Cathedral of the Deep is (so far) paradoxically mostly rooftops, but I've made some progress, found a shortcut back to the Cleansing bonfire, and ... came across an angry giant, which seems to be saying "take a break." Maybe I can tell him that other giant is my bud and it will chill out.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 24 December 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link

Oh, one more thing. I was looking over all my weapons (I've been using the Claymore, up to +3 right now), and pretty much everything I have scales at an E or D level, which is nothing special (as much as I can even understand that system). The one exception is the giant butcher knife, which requires a bit more strength than I have but scales at an A, which is significantly better than anything I have. I like the Claymore, but is it worth putting in stats for the butcher knife?

The scaling on the butcher knife makes it tempting but it's not that great imo. Use what you like, generally the scaling improves as you level it up.

And since you're playing offline, honestly anything will work. But the claymore has a more versatile moveset and the butcher knife is kinda one dimensional.

Deacons of the Deep: done. First try! I bet they could have made that match tougher, in a more interesting way. Now farting around the Farron Swamp, which is OK, though I did lose a bunch of souls by being stupid in a rush to re-fight the big swamp monster. Made friends with the sleepy wolf, think I'm about to fight a stray demon in the distance.

I haven't played 2, but there definitely seem to be choices 3 made to make things a little easier for players, from more bonfires to a slight potency downshift of bullshit like poison. I'm sure there is bullshit to come, though.

Almost got the Abyss Watcher(s) on my first try, but got greedy and died with plenty of estus and their health bar down to a hair. Ha. But got them on maybe the fourth try. Watching the NPC enemies fight each other is one of this game's early pleasures. Now I'm exploring the catacombs and ... doing OK.

Giant skeleton boss down. Another one that wasn't too bad, as long as you avoid the thing that almost kills you instantly. I assume he was conjuring up those skeletons, too? I also killed a fire demon near a lake, but that lake looks like a pain. Giant monster plus giant arrows shooting at you? Ugh.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 4 January 2020 14:17 (four years ago) link

it’s not tooooo bad iirc. though made considerably easier if you’ve got the ring that allows you to wade through water without impediment.

Fizzles, Saturday, 4 January 2020 14:19 (four years ago) link

Aaaand now Old Demon King done, too. Two tries. Since I was embered anyway, I summoned help, but the phantom took its time and got killed by the giant arrows before it even got to the arena. The second time I embered myself, figuring I was owed a break, since I died the first time to the Demon with extra health but no help. Still, that thing took a licking and kept on ticking!

I know the super-hard bosses must be coming soon. So far the ones that have given me the most trouble have been the ones that disorient you, like the Cleric Clones and giant skeleton.

Fizzles, Saturday, 4 January 2020 15:37 (four years ago) link

The enemies down where I spent some time earlier, under the lake, are a real pain in the ass, especially that hallway with three (four?) fire orb casters or whatever. Even when you run away, which you pretty much have to do, their fireballs follow you around and hit you in the back. And them sometimes the monsters themselves follow you, and just when you think you are safe and are trying to get your bearings, you hear them wheezing and growling and then you realize you still have to fight them. That's happened to me a couple of times, and at least once while I was fighting one fire monster another one snuck up and got behind me. And then I died.

Oh, also, I took this alternate route past the basilisks and came across what feels like this game's version of Havel, who kicked my ass with one hit.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 4 January 2020 21:26 (four years ago) link

If you want, you can summon the phantom version of that guy at the bonfire and eventually have them fight each other.

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 4 January 2020 22:53 (four years ago) link

Also something that you learn as an invader is running forward with the camera looking behind you, to dodge projectiles etc (although admittedly that's much easier when you know where you're going and don't have to worry about npc enemies).

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 4 January 2020 22:55 (four years ago) link

Speaking of cameras, I've had more camera trouble in this one than I had in the first one. Often times I'll lock on to something and it will sort of quickly swing around to me, with a close up on my character, with the locked on enemy off camera and "behind" me (me, the player, perspective-wise). Dunno why this is.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 5 January 2020 04:10 (four years ago) link

Oh, so it looks like there are *two* hostile NPC characters to (optionally?) fight down here: the heavy shield guy with the giant sword and Horace, who is mad at me for some reason.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 5 January 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link

Quality Dark Souls cheese: that guy with the ridiculously oversized sword, optional or no, kept more or less one-shotting me, and as I died to him a few times I kept getting sloppier and sloppier, so much so that even the rats on the way back for a rematch started taking me down. So finally I think, screw it, I'm going to make this asshole fight another asshole. I take a breath, go past the basilisks and kite the Black Knight (who is relatively easy, compared to Big Sword) into following me down to the guy with the Big Sword. Of course I discover the knight stopped halfway, because I get back down to Big Sword and ... where's my backup!? I run as fast as I can back to the little basilisk area, and run right into the waiting Black Knight. I immediately turn, roll down the stairs in a panic, get my bearings and ... aggro Big Sword is there again but no Black Knight! So I panic again, tumble *up* the stairs ... right into the Black Knight, who takes a swing at me and chases me back *down* the stairs ... right into Big Sword. I barely know what's going on, so I cross my fingers and roll up the stairs again. Find some space, turn around and ... no one behind me. Phew. I sneak down the stairs a bit, and lo and beyond, Big Sword and Black Knight are fighting like idiots. Even better, they knock each other into the lava, keep fighting (!), and soon both die! Score. Of course I died hopping in to the lava to get the stuff they dropped, but it was worth it.

By comparison, Horace was pretty easy. That giant worm was a pain in the ass, though, even after turning off the giant canon (which I had to look up, it's a pretty involved trek!). Easy to take the worm down, but it took a bunch of ranged attacks from a safe vantage. I'm sure there was a faster way, but all I know is that when I hit him with my sword it looked like I was doing damage but I had no idea how much, and his lightning attack kept kicking my butt. So I did it my way.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 5 January 2020 22:31 (four years ago) link

Another DS moment: get to Imodium of the Valley, or whatever it is called, and they immediately sic a giant wolf zombie beast on me ... from behind me! Took a few tries to kill that thing, but all the subsequent enemies seem to be tougher, too. And a lot of them seem to penalize you for waiting too long instead of just attacking like a maniac, which makes things a hair more stressful.

Oh, also, accidentally killed the NPC Anri. I was talking to them (her?) when that army of skeletons by the bridge attacked me, and I forgot that not only does talking to NPCs not give me immunity, but that the NPC can be harmed by the baddies, too. But when I was trying to attack these 20 skeletons I accidentally hit Anri, who of course aggroed. So I had no choice but to kill her. Oh well. I wish this game gave you the opportunity to say you're sorry. Wait, doesn't it? Isn't there a way to absolve myself of sin, or is that just the first game? I had to do that once during the first game after accidentally hitting Onion Knight, who is the best hang in the game.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 6 January 2020 22:51 (four years ago) link

Pontiff Sullivan down! The first time I fought him he kicked my ass fast. The second time I got in a few hits. The third time I think I successfully parried him a couple of times (though there was no gong sound, so who knows), I got his health about halfway down ... and then he did this lame purple AOE that killed me. The next time I fought him I made it past the AOE, but then he spawned a second one (which is like the third or fourth time a boss in this game has done that). After that I just summoned a phantom with a funny hat and the fight wasn't too bad.

I have trouble figuring out scaling in this game, but right now my primary weapon has been a Claymore+6, whose damage and moves do the trick. However, I do have a Black Knight Sword up to +4 (I think), and the numbers imply it deals a lot more damage. Hmm, I may try that one out for a bit. I guess my character is kind of a strength build at this point, though I'm considering putting a few more points into her dex and making her quality, which seems to be a pretty solid route. I mean, people call it quality for a reason! I don't really know what dex does, though.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 22:36 (four years ago) link

Dex is just like strength but for lighter, weapons (that generally don't have hyperarmor, meaning it's easier to interrupt their swings). I almost always go for dex in these games.

The next area is Gank City, where you would normally be invaded constantly when embered (there's a covenant that automatically pulls you into invasions there if you have it equipped). Also where people used to have fight clubs back in the early days.

I just made it to Anor Londo after dealing with some BS. Fire casters, those two sleeping giants, a few invisible witches, and those aggro bros. Oh, and also read a tip about an invisible wall, climbed down and had to fight two of those monster alligator zombie dogs, which were honestly tougher than most of the bosses so far. And then right past that point you're immediately rewarded by those silver knights with giant arrows who killed me a lot, which was kind of comical. If there is a plus side to this stuff it's that you amass souls pretty quickly, so I always make sure to spend them down before exploring and dying more. I mean, I've lost some souls, but I can handle losing 4000 at once. I can't handle losing 30,000+.

I did some exploring of a dungeon earlier, I suspect there is more to find there (besides assholes that halve your health). I'm trying to remember if the first game had this many (relatively speaking) progress options.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 January 2020 23:13 (four years ago) link

Beat Aldrich third try. I think I got lucky, because it was only when it was over that I noticed I had no more estus!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 10 January 2020 16:39 (four years ago) link

Some thoughts right now, having spent a minute in the Profaned Capital: boy, does Dark Souls 3 lean in to the DS reputation. There are lots of enemies that are just perversely difficult or annoying, like invisible enemies, or enemies that suddenly reduce your health bar, or super powerful enemies in cramped rooms (like those fire monsters in the hallway or the giant in the room with respawning rat waves) that you can take down if you really want but which pretty much encourage you to run past, tons of mimics or other things that basically pick you up and chew you up. Having that OP giant alligator dog monster spawn out of nowhere *behind you* in Irithyll, for example, is like a DS programmer in-joke or something. There are of course features that help you out in this game, though, so I guess it's all about the balance.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 11 January 2020 14:50 (four years ago) link

Unlike the first game, in this game so far Firelink is a pretty lonely place. There used to be a bunch of folks there to keep me company, but not anymore. Weird pilgrim guy is dead and just there. Bloodborne guy has been gone for a while. I had to kill Horace and accidentally had to kill Anri, so they're not there. There's the hooded guy who vanishes for long stretches. There's the sad sorcerer woman who I have no need to talk with. I think I may have missed something important to continue Onion Knight's quest. It's just me, the Firekeeper, the woman selling stuff and Andre. I have no idea whether Patches will show up, but that guy is a dick, anyway.

i think I'm creeping toward the (a?) end, give or take the DLC and some other stuff. I just killed three fat angel-monsters on the top of a roof, there's a big staircase full of enemies on the way to what must be a boss in the Grand Archives. Plus there's a swamp to explore near/under Lothric Castle. Then I need to do snow land and ... some other DLC. Ringed City? I'm sure there's another final boss, too. I've got a black knight sword up to +5, my claymore (which seems to do less damage than the BKS but has a slightly faster moveset, plus can be buffed, which I generally don't do) up to +8, plus a host of other weapons I can upgrade if I want. My stats are creeping up with each round, too, but not sure how much they matter at this point. In a sense once you hit a level where you no longer need to bother with a shield that pretty much means you're ready for anything this game can throw at you, imo.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 January 2020 17:25 (four years ago) link

Now those twin princes ... those dudes are tough. May wait to take them on tomorrow.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:09 (four years ago) link

Oof, this boss. This might be the first one this game to make me feel seriously underpowered. I'm not, of course, but it's just kicking my ass in a way that no other DS3 boss has really done it. Doesn't appear to be a summon sign for this one, either (and for that matter this may be the first/only boss that talks to you/taunts you), so I guess I'm on my own. I've made it to the second stage once or twice so at least I know that part is possible, but ... yeah, I need to figure this one out.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 04:30 (four years ago) link

OK, a primo example of non-intuitive (afaict) DS3 bullshittery. After dying to the Two Princes ... a bunch, I decide to ember up and find the summon sign. There is always a summon sign. But ... not this time. Die a bunch more and finally decide to see what's up. I look it up and it turns out there is no summons because I did not complete the Sirris quest. (Who I forgot existed. I met her once in Firelink, and like everyone else there she vanished, so I figured that was that.) Fine, gotta do the Sirris quest if I want any help. Now, I don't play embered, because I die too much, but it turns out there is a summons sign on the bridge to Irytthal, after you kill the wolf dog. I find it, *she* summons *me* (is this new to DS3?), I kick the other NPC's ass, and she thanks me. Now it turns out that first I have to go back to Firelink and have her thank me *again*. Um, ok. Then it turns out there is a *second* quest, and that I need to be summoned *again* outside of where I killed the Giant Tree. Fine, I do that and help her. Then you have to go back to Firelink *again* and have her pledge loyalty. OK, good to go! Except ... her summon is still not there. Because it turns out first I need to go back to the one place where I killed Hodrick and grab his armor, and *then* I have to go to a grave outside Firelink and grab his shield. Or so I assume, because I haven't tried for the Twins again.

Now, how was I supposed to know to do all that? Even if I was playing embered I don't think it would have triggered all these things I needed to do, I had to know I needed to backtrack, afaict. And that's probably true, I suppose, for all of the other Firelink peeps that have vanished.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:42 (four years ago) link

My equipped rings are usually endurance boost, Havel, ring of favor and then some other ring. For Twin Princes I've also used the one for more I frames, or the estus boost. But they kill me pretty quickly.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:45 (four years ago) link

The biggest problem I've had with the Twin Princes is, either by design or, er, lack of design, camera-related. That is, the boss keeps popping up some distance away from me, but behind me, which is to say, behind the camera, so I have to spin or tumble around wildly looking for it, and that's when it teleports and kills me, or unleashes that blast and kills me. At first I thought a better shield would help, and it does, to some extent. But managing endurance seems to be a bigger issue, to let me repeatedly tumble away to safety. Even Sirris (who I think is meant/guaranteed to die midway through the fight) gives only a little boost of help, in the first stage. But if every other time I've summoned for help has made a fight pretty easy, this is the first time it only makes it a little easier. But still not easy! I'm sure I'll defeat them today, but boy am I sick of taking that elevator up and making sure it is primed to take me the correct direction again after I die.

It's been ages since I've done this fight, but from what I remember it's best done without locking on (because of the teleporting). You get better camera control this way but it takes a little practice. Also I believe you have to be extremely non-greedy, I remember limiting myself to one hit at a time (except when he's down and you're desperately trying to damage the paraplegic prince, of course).

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 23 January 2020 15:58 (four years ago) link

I have no idea why, but this boss is giving me more trouble than literally any boss in DS1 or DS3 so far, except for maybe Artorias of the Abyss. But will definitely try keeping lock off.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 January 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

Watched someone do it and the big things seem to be 1) only doing 1 hit at a time, because he counterattacks so quickly, and you don't want to be trading hits or not have enough endurance to roll, and 2) surviving those homing magic missiles at the beginning of the second phase, and then staying as close as possible so he doesn't keep casting them?

Also things like rolling into him rather than away, so that you can get in a swing between his attacks.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 23 January 2020 20:58 (four years ago) link

So far I've had the best luck after summoning, since Sirris bears the brunt of some of the attacks and allows me to conserve estus. But still doesn't seal the deal! (And of course adds HP to the enemy.) I tried buffing my claymore with lightning (right now, +10 heavy) but that's not much of a help. I've had better luck with the unbuffed claymore, or usually the black knight sword. Rolling is better than blocking, so I haven't really bothered with a shield. But I do seem to be making progress, in that often I make it to the second stage before dying. Hmm, maybe I'll try some different combos of rings? Ultimately I think my dodging of this guy is just off, so maybe I'll face it a few more times just to practice rolling and get out of the bad habit of panic rolling.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 January 2020 04:38 (four years ago) link

this is more like it. it’s been quite demoralising seeing you go through saying how do i do this, how do i do that, and then beating bosses in about five goes. weeks, *weeks* it took me sometimes.

i did just end up getting the rhythm of this boss, once you start getting past the first stage every time you know you’re going to be ok - Jordan otm when he says don’t get too greedy.

Fizzles, Friday, 24 January 2020 07:52 (four years ago) link

OK, I got them down this morning in two final tries (which was my plan). I played embered but with no summon (since the added boss HP was doing me no favors). I had been rolling too much, vs. just rolling once or twice as needed, so indeed I just followed the pattern and calmly avoided attacks. Dodge, hit, dodge dodge, hit, back away, dodge, hit, etc. Had the green crest shield on my back to help with endurance. I tested the approach this morning before I took my kid to school, and it got me pretty far, so when I faced them the second time I knew I could do it. And did it. One key was to hide behind the pillars (which I suppose were there for a reason lol) whenever the second stage shot all that magic at me. When I eventually staggered him off his brother and I saw how low his HP was it was totally exhilarating, which is what it's supposed to do. Dunno why, exactly, but DS3 seems to have a lot more personality than DS1, in enemy and level design, especially this end-game stuff.

Not sure where the game is going now, exactly. Offered the cinders, Firelink is now dark and empty. Does that mean I can't buy or upgrade anything anymore? I know I can go to the big end boss, or the snowy DLC, or all of the earlier parts of the game, but that last choice doesn't really seem to have a point if souls are no longer really an issue. Though I did burn through a lot of my embers in all those Twin Princes attempts, for whatever that is worth. Either way, I'm giving it a break for a couple of days.

"Now, how was I supposed to know to do all that?" is the true DS motto

Dan I., Friday, 24 January 2020 17:33 (four years ago) link

Seriously. After killing the boss in the swamp/garden you're given this dragon gesture to add to your repertoire. I was under the impression I needed to fight a dragon in this game at some point, and having made it close to the end with no real dragon battle I decide to figure out what I was missing. It turns out you're supposed to go back to a balcony in a much earlier level and then make the gesture there to unlock a new area with the dragon boss at the end. Now, how was I supposed to know to do all that?

(See also: how to find Champion Gundyr and Nameless King, two other optional bosses whose reputation preceded them.)

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 25 January 2020 01:27 (four years ago) link

The dragon-human statue with a conspicuously empty mat next to it was def a tip-off, I tried all my sitting gestures next to it the first time around (but only because of the crow's nest in DS1).

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 25 January 2020 13:38 (four years ago) link

When I eventually found the gesture called 'Path of the Dragon' with the exact same pose, yes!

(there was a quest in DS1 to turn into dragon form too btw)

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 25 January 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link

Huh, I must have missed dragon quest in the first game, too. (Though I do recall fighting a dragon!) My attention of detail is just not good enough to remember that kind of stuff when I play through. I'm usually very focused on forward momentum. In fact, there are already some moments, enemies and levels I've almost totally forgotten in DS3, and when I'm reminded I suddenly flash back and recall, oh yeah, I did spend a lot of time in Spooky Town, didn't I? In a lot of ways that's another pleasure of the game, looking back at stuff you struggled with earlier and finding none of it a real threat anymore.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 25 January 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

lol Ancient Wyvern, more like Ancient Cheese. I might have been embered, but is the "try plunge attack" note permanent? Because the hardest thing about the boss is not the boss, it's those other enemies you have to mow down first to get to your perch. I did die a few times, but not to the giant fire breathing dragon (for once), I think it was mostly Death by Impatience.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 January 2020 18:46 (four years ago) link

I've bungled the plunge more than once (like if the dragon is in the wrong position, or you run off instead of jump), which is hilariously anti-climactic

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 January 2020 22:58 (four years ago) link

OK, so Nameless King is one of ... *those* bosses. Having died to him a bunch already I can see why they made him optional! He takes away HP like a tank, making estus management paramount.
On the plus side, his dragon is getting a little easier. Turns out my black knight sword can stagger it! (Or so it appears.)

I think I'll take this guy out eventually, move on the Ashes of Snowville, then to the "final" boss, then to the Ringed City DLC, in that order.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:42 (four years ago) link

Ive been trying various combos of rings and lightning resistant stuff, like the lothric knight shield. I've tried a few different swords, too, having read that straight swords are he way to go, but honestly my claymore+10 and BKS+5 seem to kill the dragon faster, and the latter got him down to 50% ... once.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 20:17 (four years ago) link

I haven't fought him since my first playthrough, but have gotten really used to the timing of that since lots of players like to use his weapon. It can be backstabbed in pvp, I don't know that I would try it on the boss though. :)

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

I suppose I do appreciate this level of challenge. There's a lot at play here. Do I go with a heavier shield for defense against attacks, at cost to my ability to dodge? Or do I go a little lighter, even though said dodges are hard (for me). I'm pretty comfortable with the black knight sword, so I think I'll stick with that, though I have experimented with my claymore and even the lothric knight sword (which is lighter and faster but even upgraded does less damage). Hmm ... I think the two times I've almost gotten him I got greedy and went for an extra attack when I should have hung back and healed. Stamina/health management seems to be key with this guy.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 February 2020 15:42 (four years ago) link

OK, came pretty close again today. I think I've concluded that better to go light and nimble than heavy. The last several attempts I've just gone in two-handed with a lothric knight shield on my back, and that seems to be working the best. Roll, hit, roll, roll, hit, get hit, roll away, heal. Repeat, etc.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 February 2020 18:33 (four years ago) link

I take it back, this guy is giving me trouble. The first phase is OK, but the Nameless King on his own fights like the first boss I've faced that is really, truly trying to kill you. His tracking is nuts, he hits like a tank, he follows up like he knows he has the upper hand (because he does). Again, I've come close a couple of times, but luck has played a big part in that, and I still died. I know people can beat anything blindfolded, in the dark, with no weapons, using their left hand on Nintendo bongos with only voice commands given by a friend in another room, but ... I'm not one of those people. They don't even let you summon a NPC for this (optional) jerk. I think next time I'll try with the heaviest shield I can handle and the least amount of equipment/armor, so that maybe I can still fast roll while wielding a wall of defense. Because ... man.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 8 February 2020 13:36 (four years ago) link

time to admit i never defeated him. i came *really* close - a gnat's hair of his health left - on the second or third time i faced him and never got close after.

Fizzles, Saturday, 8 February 2020 14:56 (four years ago) link

I just fought him a couple of times right now with a heavy shield and a funny hat, in my underwear. Clearly armor doesn't do shit in this game. I mean, I died both times, but at least I can roll, so that's a good sign.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 8 February 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

You know what? Fuck this boss. Maybe if I didn't have to fight the stupid bird dragon first, maybe if I didn't have to sit through the cut scene over and over, maybe if I just entered the fog to fight the Nameless King ... I'd probably still say this fuck this boss, but maybe I'd have a shot. As it is, even leveled up the dude basically two shots me with relentless attacks, and dodging and shielding only seems to be so effective so far. So I think I'll move on and come back later.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 February 2020 15:54 (four years ago) link

Screaming aside (def turn your volume town), this is a good reminder of what a civilian learning this boss looks like (not a streamer who can do it sl1 + blindfolded + broken straight sword):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLS-mpwRM10

Stay close, only hit him once, otherwise you risk not having enough endurance to roll through his combos.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 10 February 2020 16:18 (four years ago) link

lol I've come really close to where he was toward the end, but the road there has been relentless, and replicating the results ... few and far between. Aside from dying, that is.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 February 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link

Nah fuck this boss and its bending space and time attacks. The sweeps are one thing, but you roll at an angle to his right when he's diving down to his left, 45 degrees away from where his spear is pointing, and he still somehow impales you. Again, maybe I could take it if I didn't have to fight the fucking bird and his strongest ally, the camera, again and again beforehand, but this seems like a (one-sided) war of attrition.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 February 2020 20:16 (four years ago) link

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 10 February 2020 20:53 (four years ago) link

I can totally see how this all went down.

"How is that boss design coming along?"

"We have an angry dude on a flying dragon."

"Sounds good so far. How does it play?"

"Well, he's totally overpowered, and the camera is fucked. Also, it doesn't really matter how much you've leveled up, or what rings you have, or what weapons or shields or buffs you use. You might as well be naked, it's so unforgiving."

"Hmm. Does the environment at least look cool?"

"Just kind of nondescript white clouds. Oh, and there is no NPC summon, either."

"Oof. Well, I'm afraid we have to keep things the way they are, release day is tomorrow. Do you at least have a name for the boss?"

"About that ... "

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 February 2020 22:03 (four years ago) link

There, I beat him. Obviously I'd seen a million posts and videos that proved he *could* be beat, but I was just not getting there. So I looked up how to cheese him, and even then there were only two options.

The first was to transpose the dragonarmour greatshield, which I did and tried, but he kept plowing through me, despite its high defenses. It was just taking too much strength to wield, and while I survived his first couple of hits I was usually so drained a third inevitably got me.

The second option I'd never considered: ranged attack. I'm playing as a knight, so a melee build, which means no casting fireballs or soulspears or whatever. But this one video demonstrated you can really take advantage of his dramatic slow approach by wearing him down ... with a crossbow. So I upgraded the heaviest crossbow I had, loaded up on heavy bolts, and then after taking out the dragon with the sword and getting to the Nameless King, just steadily walked backwards away from him as I fired my crossbow. Now, he still gets mad and attacks, so I had to stay relatively light and nimble and rolly-polly, and I kept my sword in my right hand. (I didn't bother with a shield, which seemed pretty useless in this fight). The secret was to use the crossbow to both wear him down and draw out his own ranged flying attack, which opened a couple of windows to swipe at him. And he still often connected; I ended with maybe two spare estus. Once you finally beat him down to those lightning bolt AOE attacks he's a lot easier to dodge, stagger and stab, which I did. Oh, and right before the second phase I popped the one ember I had left, which gave me a much needed health boost. (Fighting him before, I burned through maybe 35 embers.)

Am I embarrassed? Hell no. This game gives you enemies with infinite stamina, massive HP, multiple stages, one or two shot abilities and no obvious weaknesses that can still kill you in seconds, no matter your level. And then makes the Nameless King walk slowly toward you like a chump? It's an invitation to cheese, afaict, as blatant as "try plunging attack."

Anyway, I think this might be the most perverse level of the entire game so far. One bonfire is by a giant dragon boss you can one-shot with a plunging attack it tells you to use (har), another bonfire is by the infinitely generating NPC you can kill forever to farm souls, and the other is by the Nameless King, the biggest pain in the ass and most difficult boss so far. And an optional one, at that. Very funny, Dark Souls.

I know there are tough bosses to come. That seems to be the way of the DLC, plus I have the Lord of Cinder or whatever they call the main game Big Bad to take out. But in the meantime I took on the wolf and his pal in the snow, and after Nameless King it was very satisfying to kick their ass in seconds.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 February 2020 21:50 (four years ago) link

OK, I've fought Sister Friede a few times now, so far always with NPC help. The first time I came so close to beating her I thought I *had* beat her; I couldn't even tell that she had a sliver of health left, and that pause cost me (even though I had plenty of estus). Each other time I (we, me and Gael) have made it to the third stage, but I think I was so emboldened by that first attempt I've just played very aggressively and been taken out by my own sloppiness. Either way, I think it's a cool fight with a cool (long) cut scene, so I have no real concerns about beating her.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 February 2020 19:08 (four years ago) link

Took a few more times than I expected, and I needed to be embered and have help from Gael, but finally took her/them down. Without a doubt my favorite fight, never got frustrated or bored with it, not even the cut scene. The funny thing is, I thought it was the end of that DLC, so proceeded on to the Dreg Heap, where I let my guard down and immediately got my ass kicked.

I beat Soul of Cinder on my second attempt. I love how in this game and the first game, the two that I have played, the final boss is far from the hardest boss. Gives it all an additional sad air of tragedy.

Don't know why I'd been shying away from any giant swords. I've been using a fully upgraded black knight sword and fully upgraded claymore for much of the game, but using a fully upgraded lothric ultra greatsword has been awesome.

Something else I love about these games so far is that I've spent so much time, and done and fought so many things so many different ways ... and I've still never used magic or pyro or played online. And do the covenants ever do anything if you're offline? I think they were important once in DS1, but I forgot all about them after I joined them in this game, too.

Biggest regret was not really following or figuring out most of the quests. Esp. the dude in Firelink who I guess would have let me level up for free a lot, but who died before I figured that out.

so I've completed Witcher 3 and just started this last night. got nowhere. that first boss is about as tough as some of the harder bosses in Witcher!

So what can I expect from this game? how does it compare to Witcher? I'm not even really sure what I'm trying to achieve. The story feels a bit loose and cryptic. I take it there isn't so much in the way of dialogue and story, and that it's more about the combat mechanics etc?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 20:03 (four years ago) link

the story is cryptic certainly and fragmentary. you’re finding things out through remnants. it’s a v different rhythm. v different game. it’s absolutely not open world, but it is intricately structured.

it is about combat mechanics, very much so - the crucial one being the trade-off between stamina and attacking. but it is also about environment - really i’d say that stories in the soulsborne games are told through environments - the landscapes and buildings - and objects.

Loving this. After I make significant progress I do look up to see what I've missed and whether it's worth going back for it. In this case, after I made it to the bonfire before the dragon on the bridge, I look back and ... come on, who in the world would know that you can use a branch to turn into a ghost (*if* you are standing in the swamp), and that you could then float back past the bonfire, go around the corner, and a magic ladder would lower? And that's how you get to the purging monument? That's like hidden wall X10, there is just no way anyone figured that out unless they made it their full time job and literally tried everything.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 22 March 2020 22:48 (four years ago) link

Tried a few more times and I think Midir might be the first boss I just skip. I dunno, there is just no getting the upper hand, and it can one shot you with some attacks, and more or less two shot you with others, so you (I) die real fast. Takes forever to get there, the camera (even not locked on) just doesn't do you any favors, which is an extra pain, since it has about a million HP but you have to hit the head to do the most damage, and even that is one or two hits at a time. Of course it's doable, and if I fight it enough I'll beat it, but lack of any clear progress is more boring than dispiriting.

summons?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 23 March 2020 21:37 (four years ago) link

I'm offline. And everything I've heard says summoning the in-game NPC assist is no real help, because they add even more HP to the dragon, and they tend to die fast, because NPCs can't (or don't) dodge.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 March 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link

Nooooo. I will say that even with real players, Midir is a summon-proof boss. Additional summons just mess up the AI and make him unpredictable, and this one is all about reading tells and figuring out a counter for each move, and when you can attack. And he already has so much hp, adding summons just makes him ridiculous (because bosses gain hp for each person you summon).

That said, figuring him out was my most memorable fight in all of DS3 (like Manus was for me in DS1).

I also think I switched up my weapons just for this boss, because I need something with a long (but not too slow) vertical swing, to reach his head in the moments when you can counterattack.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2020 22:01 (four years ago) link

And like many bosses in this game, there's a riposte opportunity midway through the fight, so it goes faster than you think it will (based on the damage you're doing initially)

(I won't pretend like I didn't watch a couple fights on Youtube to help learn his moveset)

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2020 22:09 (four years ago) link

Yeah, I can't figure out a weapon strategy. I was using a heavy lothric knight greatsword, which scales A with strength and has bonus lightning, plus reach, but it's heavy and you have to be judicious with swings. Then I went back to the heavy claymore+10, and you can swing it more, and it has OK reach, but the dragon rarely lets you hit it more than once or twice before moving, anyway. That's why I suspect beating it could ultimately prove boring. Hit once, dodge, wait, hit once, dodge, wait, heal, repeat. And any mistake can seriously set you back if not take you out instantly. My biggest frustration is just finding its head again after dodging. There are times I could have sworn I had a clear shot, but my sword just did not connect. Of course, clearly plenty of people have no problem with Midir, so there's that, too.

I had tons of trouble with Nameless King, too, but there seemed more incentive to do that one. He had some similar issues, though. Fighting the camera, plus a super boring arena. I wish the bonfire was right outside the Midir drop down.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 March 2020 22:11 (four years ago) link

It's definitely a fight where you're only going to get in one hit at a time, maaaaybe two (can't remember, but there's maybe only one or two moves of his where you're safe to keep swinging afterward).

If you can get the hang of controlling your camera without locking on, I think that helps (although you can always lock on once you're going in for a swing, and then unlock again).

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2020 22:32 (four years ago) link

I also had a big incentive to beat him, because that's the only way you get to BE the boss in another spot (instead of Halflight, who you probably already fought?).

one month passes...

Playing this on PC in 2020 is wild with the hacking. An invader used what's apparently called a "monster vac" hack on me, summoning like a dozen enemies at a time to teleport right on top of me. The third time he did it it even included the nearest boss (it was the rotten tree boss). Managed to survive (somehow the boss just kinda died on its own?), but I'm not looking forward to anything like that happening again, and I hope it didn't break my saved game in some way that doesn't become apparent for another 20 hours or something.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 July 2020 13:10 (four years ago) link

Are you locked on to him? (don't mean to patronize, but he's near the beginning of the game, and sometimes people miss fundamental mechanics. I remember reading about a guy that played some big open world thing and somehow missed that fast traveling was a thing, so he played the entire game traveling from place to place in "real time")

Dan I., Wednesday, 29 July 2020 14:04 (four years ago) link

This is the first boss, right? I don't remember him being that bad, though I guess it depends what your starting class/weapon is. Iirc circle/strafe and stab in the butt is a strategy that almost always works with this game. Circle, stab, dodge/move, repeat.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 14:16 (four years ago) link

It throws you in the deep end, don't get discouraged. Blocking can help depending on your starting gear, locking on will help with the camera, although his phase 2 can make it tricky. Don't attack until you're out of stamina, attack two or three times and then strafe to the right (because at least in phase 1, his weapon is in his right hand), repeat.

Also if you picked cleric, the Perseverance weapon art makes it easy.

Neil S, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 14:55 (four years ago) link

Haha. I know I've said this before, but it's also good to be able to play without lock-on and control the camera manually, like when there are multiple opponents, or certain bosses (often very large ones that mess with the camera, ones that can fly or teleport across the arena rapidly, or consist of multiple enemies). But no need to worry about that at the beginning.

Also weapons that have a wide horizontal sweep (like straight swords) make it a lot easier to play without lock-on. Lock-on is pretty essential for thrust-type weapons like spears.

What did you pick for your starting class?

You use souls to level up and to buy things. I wouldn't worry about them too much, they come and go. It's a good idea to use them after defeating a boss though, especially early on.

If have 1000 souls and then you die, you get a chance to pick up those 1000 souls. But if you die again before picking them up, they're gone.

Verdict on this game so far: Infuriating, addictive, very creepy*, difficult.

Haven't worked out if this is for me yet, but I like how it keeps me in my seat. I seem to make tiny little bits of progress each time; and when it comes to an obstacle such as that boss, I feel compelled to beat him, despite my heart pounding in frustration.

It came bundled with Witcher 3 when I bought my PS4. But other than a few aesthetic similarities it seems to be quite a different thing in terms of gameplay: It's much more of a tactical action game than a story-based RPG. More in common with things like Celeste than other third person adventures,in many ways. I can see why people like to speed run it.

*Altogether I'm finding the setting and design very satisfying, if rather grim. Dank labyrinths of stone and marble, dead-eyed wraiths attacking me, NPCs intoning gnomic wisdom in detached voices. Maybe this sounds ridiculous, but does it ever lighten up at all, I mean, even a little bit?

I know I felt this way about Witcher 3 when I was first trudging around Velen, and was thankful for the moments of light relief, especially once I got to Novigrad and later Toussaint. DS3 strikes me as a very serious, unfriendly and unforgiving game by comparison.

There's almost no levity, ever, but what little there is comes almost exclusively from the messages left by other players (if you think things like "tongue but hole" written next to a corpse draped over a railing is funny) and the slapstick-like humor of a well-chosen gesture during cooperation or invasion. The game itself is relentlessly grim

lol what i like about these games is there are moments of respite. brief bits of sanctuary, fragments of a previous paradise or place of safety or even unexpected (and slightly nerve wracking) quiet. stepping cautiously into a non threatening space. a brief moment where the wonder or grotequery of the landscape or architecture is available to you. of course they are v few and far between, which is why they’re potent.

Fizzles, Friday, 31 July 2020 17:34 (four years ago) link

Yeah, one reason why I've taken an extended break from playing "Alien: Isolation" is because it was so relentlessly stressful. Having played DS1 and 3, there were more than a few places where I would feel safe, say, leaving the game on while I went to the bathroom or off to get a snack or something, without having to worry about returning to find myself dead. Sometimes that's because I killed everything, but other times it was just some place where I could chill and admire the view.

COVID and "holidays" have had me gaming more than normal, and I'm pleased to say that this game is easily in my top ten ever. I'm flabbergasted, I can't believe how wonderful it is

I struggled around the Dragon Peak area but then I slabbed my main weapon and put five extra levels into my vigour and suddenly the challenge/fun balance was achieved and it was just heavenly

On a whim I summoned a stranger right at the entrance to the Grand Archive and she was an A+ tour guide, we blew through the entire level in one run, she was pointing out the ladders and elevators and making sure I knew what I was doing. I didn't even ask, she just saw what things had been activated and led the way.

I ended up with some 140000 souls as a result and she kindly left the world right in front of the boss gate so I could de-fog the shortcut elevator. I had three Estus left so I went poking around a roof and ran into three flying fat knights who murdered me

And so I hired another stranger to help me with the knights and I got my souls back

At lower levels my PvP experiences were punishing, but by the time I got to Level 80 I was basically trading salvos with every invader until they ran out of Estus

I won, did the Nameless King too (with a stranger's assist), and just have the DLC to look forward to. My boyfriend likes calling them "titty slabs" and "titty chunks". I like cutting off the vendor's farewell dialogue so instead of her saying Ashen One Be Sure To Bring Me More Souls she just says "Ashen One BEESH"

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 3 January 2022 03:28 (two years ago) link

I think Nameless King gave me the most trouble in this game. It even took me forever to even find a successful way to cheese it, which iirc involved equipping a crossbow and just firing away as I slowly backed up for a few minutes. This is after the dragon, which was the easy part.

Trying to remember the DLC, exactly. Ringed City? That DLC rules, but features an (extra-optional) boss that I just couldn't deal with. I think I skipped another boss in there, too, come to think of it, just because I was done and wanted to move on, and the arena was not that interesting. The other DLC is pretty great, too.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 January 2022 14:11 (two years ago) link

Haha YES fgti, so glad you're enjoying it. You've inspired me to put my white sign down and help out once in awhile instead of just invading. Let me know if you ever want a password-summoned sherpa!

DLC is great, that secret optional boss is one of my favorites. It's one of those that seems impossible at first, but really takes learning each one of their moves and ends up being rewarding a la Manus or Kalameet. Also becomes much harder if you summon help, because the moves become less predictable and the health pool is ridiculous. Or, of course you could look up cheese online and use poison or whatever.

xpost For Midir, don't you have to run down from a fire, take a long elevator ride, then fall down a long pit each time you want to reach the boss? I can't remember if there is an enemy in between, but even if there isn't, iirc it's a drag to do that again and again.

Spoilers if anybody cares:

I had the most thrilling 20 minutes of gaming of my life this evening. I found The Dreg Heap challenging but doable, laughed as I was simultaneously impaled by 76 arrows from 76 phantom archers, dealt with the big summongiant after a couple of tries, made it to a bonfire and started poking my way forward.

I found the Ringed Knights very challenging, but by the tenth time I was murdered by one (no, two? no THREE?) executioners on a wide curving strada, I decided to ember up and summon some strangers for help. I hired one, and then another as we entered Execution Way.

What followed was insane. I didn't realize there were SIX executioners all told. And then we we had to deal with two Ringed Knights at once on a bridge. And then there was another summongiant in the middle of a lake. Piles of talking murder bugs. We approached a fallen church and were beset by THREE Ringed Knights and took them down. I was catching my breath and grabbing some loot and feeling very overwhelmed, and cast around to see where the summons were, and found them fighting an inexplicable giant armoured thing by a cliff. One stranger died and the other guided me up to a gate, and then to a bonfire. I had one heal left and the stranger was making some weird moves in front of a Humanity door that I didn't understand so I sent him home and used the bonfire and smoked two cigarettes.

I cannot imagine how a person could attempt all this solo, but I get it, this is some final challenge end game stuff, but it was so thrilling to cruise through it for the first time, having no idea what lay in store, seeing ordeal after ordeal that would've surely caused me to ragequit over and over, and yet we just handled it all. I am shaken at how good this game is

I did! and I've moved on. I forgot to mention but that run I described above net me half a million souls and I levelled up six times in the 90s bracket all at once, ha. I beat the Halflight boss first try and I quick look-ahead on the cheat sheet would indicate that I'm home stretch, just a dragon and a final boss. I think I will win it tonight, spend the next week casually ranking up every covenant, murder all the NPCs, re-spec for a strength build and then do an NG+. I'm jealous of all these people with giant weapons and huge armours and want a taste. Also I enjoyed NG+ on DS1 as a kinda high-speed closing credits recap of the game, taking four hours to accomplish what previously took 40, so I'm looking forward to the same on this game. I used summons on about half my boss fights and I'd like to do some solo attempts on easy mode

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 5 January 2022 14:19 (two years ago) link

Did you get Halflight (npc version), or a player summoned as Halflight? I was reaaally hoping for the latter as it's one of the coolest features of the dlc, but not a lot of people hang around waiting to get summoned as the Spear of the Church these days so it was probably the npc. :(

What weapon are you running?

(also the dragon might take some time, it's pretty summon-resistant but worthwhile imo)

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 January 2022 17:16 (two years ago) link

I just played over my lunch break. I did get PvP Halflight but won it first try, I lucked out, I guess. Attempted dragon a few times and failed failed failed. Brought in a couple friends and won it on the fifth try.

I'm playing a very-high dexterity build with a sharp Lothric straight sword. I play two-handed with a Grass Crest on my back and I rely on my Pharis bow maybe too often with certain beasts. I have maxed sharp Sellswords on hand too in case I come up against something very fast.

I ate my lunch while waiting for Church summons. A thrilling time fighting somebody who had brought along two friends. I couldn't Estus, which I didn't understand, but I figured was the result of a spell or a Lloyd or something. I murdered the two friends, danced around the main opponent waiting for my Estus to reset, it didn't, so waited until a Painting accomplice rushed her and then went in for the kill. Beat three people in one round with no Estus, very satisfying!

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 5 January 2022 18:29 (two years ago) link

sharp Lothric straight sword

Ah, a person of taste. As much as I try I keep this on every build I make, it's just too good -- the sweeping range that nearly hits behind you, the thrust, the two-handed moveset, the guard break. My main pvp character is sl44 with this in the right hand and a Great Scythe in the off-hand for range (secondary weapons are caestus for parries + perseverance with the straight sword, and a fire dagger for quick step in swampy areas).

Nice! Yeah as a boss you don't get any estus, but you do get Dark Souls 1 level poise. A lot of people bring blessed regen items and healing miracles as the church boss.

After I got handily dispatched in PvP by one, I switched over to a sharp spiked mace and I'm so happy with it. Finished NG. I don't think I can recall a better series of final bosses than there are in this game... Midir and Gael especially feel like some kind of high-water marks

One of my favourite moments in DS1 was the first time I won NG and plowed through the first half of the game in NG+ in a couple of hours. I started doing the same in DS3 and it's just amazing how small the world is compared to how it felt the first play through... how I had to carefully strategize every section, remember every enemy's location. It doesn't feel as if the ease with which I play is a product of "higher stats, better gear" so much as it is "Man Of Pus doesn't scare me any more"

Consistently the most overpowered enemy on the second play through is the evangelist. It feels like they levelled-up their spiked mace to match my own

I read up and understand now what they mean by "meta level" and I am halting my character's development at SL 128 to hopefully enjoy some PvP. I intend to keep running my high-DEX setup but will likely switch to mage-mage if my patience permits me a NG++ run

flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 8 January 2022 15:29 (two years ago) link

Congrats!

I actually opted out of meta-level pvp a long time ago, the damage is so high that you can die in three hits, and everyone's got everything on their builds (hornet ring, tears of denial, chaos bed vestiges, etc).

I've got a sl44±4 character that I use in the Cathedral through central irithyll, a sl66+6 for Pontiff, and a sl77+7 for Grand Archives. I've found a lot more groups actually trying to get through the levels that way, and for me it's more fun to fight a group of players who maybe aren't pvp experts than dueling one person who is (although they can be fun too). But groups at meta level who are just trying to crush invaders, I burnt out on that.

Also lower-level pvp is fun because the damage to health ratio is more forgiving. You can take a bunch of hits, make mistakes and learn from them, and also need to apply pressure instead of playing passively and waiting for that one big parry or whatever.

I def. feel like I missed out not playing online, but I don't feel like I missed too much. It almost sounds like a different game.

It kinda is! Certainly a completely different set of skills. You don't have to worry about pressuring or roll-catching the AI, or playing parry mind games.

Yeah, I was reading something about the mirror knight in DS2, where it can summon another player, and a lot of people pointed out that it summoning an NPC is not too bad, but if it succeeds in summoning a player the player could be a lot more trouble than the boss.

Same for the spear of the church in DS3, and the Old Monk in Demon's. I guess they just skipped the 'player as boss' in DS1 and BB.

I really lucked out I guess with my Halflight PvP moment. I went in solo and beat the guy solo. Since then I've "been the boss" about twenty times, each time there were 1-2 accomplices, and I've only managed to hold my ground against them.. 25% of the time?

Also you're not kidding about "meta PvP". I'm getting destroyed. Nosomuch because I can't go toe-to-toe with an invader, and more because there are clearly some tactics involved. I've had invaders suddenly backed up by one or two identically dressed helpers. Invaders making a bee-line for the most dangerous part of the area and letting a mob of enemies do the job. I've been playing Darkmoon as my covenant and I get summoned most often to late-stage DLC areas (Dregs, Ringed City) and my SL 130 character, weakened by the summon, is definitely struggling with Ringed and Haldar Knights that I would otherwise not have issues with. One Dark Spirit cleverly led us into the death from above area of Ariendel and I didn't even have time to roll away between the thunderbolts from the tower.

One particularly nasty summon found me and the Dark Spirit in the entry zone of Ringed City with the 100 phantom archers. I was able to murder the dude in a Saint Sebastian fever dream

two years pass...

I went back to DS3 pvp last night (Pontiff, sl65 I think) and ended up fighting the same extremely good player like 10 times. I would invade him, and if I waited a few minutes he would invade me, because literally no one else was playing this game.

I lost every time except once, and still enjoyed it more than winning in Elden Ring because the fights were long & tense, and felt more strategic than based on who had the better build with the more apocalyptic ash of war.
