I think my fave part of this game - heck, of a lot of nintendo games now I think on it - is the fishing. I fuckin hate fishing IRL but in games it is nice and peaceful.

I usually electrocuted them with a few shock arrows and waded in and collected the corpses.

That's how I do it in real life.

(I just googled "fishing with lighting" and got some hits of a fishing boat struck by lighting and the like. Reminds me of one of my kids years ago asking, as kids are wont to do, if a tornado had ever hit a train. I googled that, too, and what do you know, found an incredible video of a mounted train camera catching the train getting hit and then derailed by a tornado. The internet is terrible, but it is also awesome.)

because it runs on real time you can't really marathon it any more than you can marathon cooking dinner or whatever

the follow the leader system is for local multiplayer where you have one screen. online you can just do whatever on the other players islands, you can't change/destroy/steal their stuff though

one thing i was surprised by: tonight my partner joined my island. i thought she'd see my avatar walking around, but i'm gone! is that normal, or is that just because it's the first night for both of us? it was just kind of weird, like...why would be my tent and possessions be there, but my character is absent from the island?

Man oh man is the online visitor system in Animal Crossing disruptive. 8 slots and each time someone either enters or exits everyone on the host island comes to a complete stop for like 35-90 seconds. Just spent 10 minutes trying to get off a friend’s popular island!

My game playing time is quite limited as I have a six month old to look after (plus lockdown, etc) - it’s quite likely I’ll only find time to play once every few days or once a week. Does that mean I’ll miss things as time passes by or will it still worl&/

How do I use this thing?

Click a color on the 3x5 palette and then just "draw" on one of the pattern representations. All of the zoom levels are drawable and they will all update at the same time. When you want to import to ACNL, simply scan the QR code at the bottom using the QR machine at the Able Sisters in-game. Don't have the QR machine yet? Talk to the quiet sister in the back for 10 days in a row to unlock it. The download ACNL file button lets you save the pattern to your computer for later use. You can also upload ACNL files or images containing QR codes. Not all images will always scan correctly since QR code reading is somewhat of an iffy thing, but we're always working on improving accuracy.

i'm playing on a lite so no haptic feedback, apparently a handicap here

Theres 3 things: visual splash, audible BLOOP and the haptic feedback - once you get used to it, it becomes muscle memory, except when I get itchy trigger finger on catch #50 grumble

the iron nuggets x30 task is taking me a while to complete. i make the rounds every day with my shovel, but usually only pick up 5 or 6 per go around, tops.

i got hopped up on native pears early on and destroyed several of my large rocks, so i'm thinking maybe i permanently destroyed a few of them? (not sure about that)

i got desperate the other day and buried a small rock in the ground. hopefully it'll somehow grow into a large rock.

yes, probably. i can also just tell her she needs to do the stuff. first step is giving tom nook 5 critters. the problem was that until i did some research to figure out how to unlock the museum i didn't even realize this was a thing bc it doesn't come up as an option when i talk to to nook. (also i now see why she has cooler stuff than me -- like the other island residents give her DIY recipes but they've never given them to me probably bc they know i'm just a tertiary player chump.)

it's the "pre-museum" phase that the Island Representative has to do, you have to give Tom Nook 5 things to invite Blathers.

i think i would be a very bad parent because i think my first instinct would be to bribe the child irl to do the thing you want her to do in the game

We are all seeking an escape. It’s that desperate need for the world to slow down, for the people to take a minute, for Republicans to develop an ounce of compassion, Democrats to grow any sort of backbone, and all us schmucks with zero power to just...take a goddamn breath. Animal Crossing, a game where you join a bunch of anthropomorphic animals on an island, is literally a virtual escape from the world. When you show up ready to board the plane that’s what the two little raccoons even tell you. Animal Crossing is meant to be the balm to our anxiety riddled little lives. Only it sucks beyond measure.

I am not unfamiliar with Animal Crossing. I definitely ignored my friends for hours while they played it and I smoked vodka-spiked hookah back in like 2005 (don’t do that). I gamely checked it out on the Nintendo DS and gave up when I missed like two days of gameplay and all my in-game friends abandoned me (don’t do that either). I even spent some time with the mobile version of it a few years ago. Most things are pretty consistent from incarnation to incarnation.

You are a human in a world of cartoon animals that speak in a digital rhythm that Nintendo translates into human-speak in text bubbles below them. You collect fruit and bugs and rocks. You build stuff. You go into massive debt to a bunch of raccoons and work all day and night to pay off that debt.

Which is really my problem with this game. Right now the real world we’d all like a vacation from is run by capitalists with no concept of beneficial socialism. Powerful men and women think a single $1,200 check will make up for months and months of lost income. These people will gladly give trillions to billion-dollar corporations but let hospitals languish. People starve and children go uneducated.

The world is already run by the raccoons so why on Earth would I want to deal with them in a game?

Animal Crossing isn’t the only real-life sim that puts you into a grind similar to the one you probably experience in the actual world day-to-day. Games like The Sims and Stardew Valley can absolutely feel like work. You get up. You work your butt off. You welcome the sweet release of sleep at the end of the day.

But those games are a lot less aggressively simulacrums of the capitalism you’re forced to reckon with daily. By forcing you into a long term and unwilling relationship with a landlord/loanshark raccoon, Animal Crossing is a closer reminder of the world we’re living in. At a moment when so many folks are clamoring for a rent freeze, the last thing I want to do is head into a simulation where that’s not even close to a possibility.

My many friends and co-workers would claim that I should just play Animal Crossing more (Gizmodo Editor in Chief Kelly Bourdet told me not to write this blog until I’d played for at least a week). They would say I should embrace the best-loved feature of the game—seamlessly traveling to your real-life friends’ island to hang out or wreck their own digital limbos.

But I didn’t want real-life people in my real-life house before a highly contagious pandemic made standing close or touching hands a veritable Victorian scandal. Why would I want you on the overgrown island that I am but a serf inhabiting?

So, even though I’ve only played 5 minutes of the game and done little more than erect a tent on a patch of land I do not own, I can safely say Animal Crossing sucks and Stardew Valley rulez.

the "i only played it for five minutes" stuff is trolling, but as an animal crossing newbie i did find it mildly shocking to start up the game and immediately be in debt and charged with paying your way out of it. you don't have to pay it off, sure, if you want to live in a tent for the whole game, but not advancing/improving is antithetical to playing a video game. what i find dumb is how many articles/tweets/whatever comment on the capitalistic aspects of the game like the author is the one giving a cheeky adult take on it, when the satire/commentary is obviously intentional and part of the game.

the whole game is about buying stuff, which is easy but puts you deeper into debt to the nooks, vs. doing it yourself, which is slightly harder but keeps you outside of the nook inc. monopoly. it's not subtle

Yep. They could have skipped all that and just said “buy an upgrade for your house for 99,000 bells!” and it wouldn’t change the gameplay at all. They made it a loan so they could make funny jokes about landlord/tenant/capitalism stuff that would fly over the heads of children

my partner played once, put her tent directly in front of my house, and then never came back. I keep sending her gifts that she never sees and it’s starting to remind me of middle school

ok, the tent is sort of to the side, but it’s off-center and it cuts off the walking path along the river, I mean come on

i put D to work i told her if she's going to be player one she has responsibilities and she can't do the fun stuff she wants to do until she labors doing the unlocks so that the rest of the family can enjoy the game. i'm considering this a meta-level explication and analysis for her of the capitalist themes already present in the game.

i zipped through the 5k miles in my first playthrough, looking forward to opening to a house. My partner has no intention of playing this game, which is a bummer.

But New Horizons is also a seriously stressful game. Tom Nook increases your debt about a millionfold in, like, the first 20 minutes. Spiders sprint after you at breakneck speed. And don’t even get me started on how passive-aggressive some of the island’s citizens can be. (They should’ve called this game Crossing Animals, amirite?

i think AC is a reflection of how you approach it. it would be very easy to turn it into a min/max grind, which is incredibly enjoyable for some people! it can also be a very chill game! i was mentioning the turnip/stalk market/stock market stuff this morning, but it's really a minor part of the game

I watch my daughter play this, and I keep asking her, can you do a), can you do b), and so on, and she keeps saying no. But how cool would it be to float up on balloons and just get an aerial view of your island? Or build a boat just to fish at sea? Or craft a raft to make a floating river? These sorts of things seem like fun.

Right now she's as frustrated as anyone with the bunny shit. Sometimes you just want to fish, right? Someone online somewhere noted how a better solution might have been to make the bunny an optional bunny suit you could wear, and you can only harvest eggs etc. when you're wearing it. Otherwise you're just stuck finding/catching eggs for egg crafts that not everyone may want to do or have. Like my non-easter celebrating daughter.

I managed to get my first few star fragments, the process is sort of awful because you need to look up and press A when you hear the quiet jingle that a shooting star makes, you really don't get much time to do it and YOU NEED EMPTY HANDS or else the "wishing on a star" thing doesn't trigger. Which means trying to listen out for these and react to them as you're going about your normal fishing/bug catching business isn't an option really, if you've got a rod or a net equipped when you hear that jingle, chances are you'll have missed it by the time you've put your tool away.

Feels instead like you need to make a point of aimlessly strolling around while you wait for these to trigger, which just isn't much fun.

yeah I had celeste in my town the other night, saw a few shooting stars drop but couldn't trigger the wish animation so just gave up. lame

wishing on shooting stars is easy. when you see one, press down on the d-pad to put your tool away, tilt the camera up to the sky, and wait for more shooting stars because whenever one goes by there will be several more coming soon after

you can use them to make a wand that lets you change outfits anywhere. i'm not sure if there's anything else you can make with them. they glow and look cool in your house

you can just take a time out and stare up at the sky for like 5 minutes and "wish" on like 30 of them. they're super common when it's one of those nights.

I got a recipe for an aries Rocking horse thingy from Celeste which you can use them for, guessing there'll be 12 of those through the year.

Its a game of long er... game. You pick it up and poke at it here and there each day or even few days. but the idea is to keep at it over a whole year so you get all the seasons, festivals, etc. It isnt a rush to the goal game.

i am pretty sure kk is the roll credits endgame so from here on in its more of a tamigotchi for me

I’m enjoying checking in about 45 minutes every day to do various things, make a few thousand bells, and eventually put it towards nice infrastructure

trayce: yeah, i think i’ve been going a bit hard with the grind and it’s become monotonous

tomboto: i’ve just started doing that too, ticking off the basic daily stuff (plant a money tree, build a new bridge/incline, use the nook terminal)

it’s easier to enjoy in small doses since I’m not the main player on the island and therefore don’t have Nook giving me a bunch of extra tasks like all that campsite fuss

What I love about it: do the things & get the things - whack trees/get wood chunks, whack rocks/get...stuff - but also the tiny bits of unpredictability: wasps' nests, fossils, random campers, visitors, and turnip prices. The attention to detail in the museum. I could sit in the butterfly room for many long minutes happily. I can fish for so long just watching the water. But it's 30 min in the morning and maybe an hour in the evening and that's plenty.

Yeah the little details are tremendous. When its raining you can see rain hitting the outside of the windows when inside. Fans make plants move. Ive noticed some days are much windier than others.

For me too, the new part I am enjoying (as someone who's played AC on and off for like 15 years, yikes) is being able to remake/remodel the whole town!

do you have to do a thing to trigger the turnip lady showing up on Sundays? Cause the Nook boys have their whole turnip spiel and refuse to talk about them on Sundays but I haven't seen the lady who actually sells them yet?

Fishing, tending flowers, catching bugs, and chatting with neighbors don’t seem aggressively capitalist. It seems like you’re only focused on the “mechanics” as far as raking in bells are involved.

I’m only interested in bells to the extent they can be used to build infrastructure really, and I’m fine with taking that gradually. I think I’ll take my 42K net turnip revenues and leave the gambling to others.

we went to my coworker's island yesterday and it's very well organized with beautiful straight sidewalks between all the houses, floral decorations, a spa area, etc. and my kid basically threw a tantrum bc our island is kind of chaotic and it costs 50,000 bells to move each house if we want to fix it so they were demanding that we all contribute large sums of bells so they can rearrange our whole island. long story short, never go to anyone else's island, especially if they apparently have endless amounts of time to play animal crossing

oh, it doesn't show the location of the island, it's just a world map with the United States, all of the continents, etc. I guess I should have already known that the animal crossing universe is in the same universe as Earth, since the day/night cycles are synced to the same 24 hour cycle.

Man, some of the irritating quirks do wear you down. I was giving back the drunk duck’s cell phone parts for the 20th time, initiated the conversation with him right as a villager was “!” and chasing me down.
