― lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 21:22 (two years ago)
lets be clear despite my skepticism i will be buying this the weekend it comes out and playing for like 20 hours before i look online
― ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 21:31 (two years ago)
tears as in crying or tears as in rips in the fabric of reality. much to think about!!
― avatár the way of watár (voodoo chili), Monday, 6 March 2023 21:33 (two years ago)
i hope the tears in the kingdom can be repaired. probably several ancillary tears and then one major rip near the middle, right through hyrule castle
― z_tbd, Monday, 6 March 2023 21:34 (two years ago)
xp it's definitely tears in the fabric of reality. also tears in link's tunic

― lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 22:37 (two years ago)
In the name of the Goddess Crylia, I bestow upon you this Spirit Orbison.

fp me
lol
― lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 23:05 (two years ago)
I was gifted a Switch and hadn't really gamed since I was a kid. This will be the first new game that I've been excited about since... the Mario game where he can turn into a raccoon? Or something?
I'm in the second phase of the Master Sword trials and digging it. Can't wait for this!!!
― Cow_Art, Monday, 6 March 2023 23:06 (two years ago)
gamers are freaking out that nintendo isnt providing them with the customary level of marketing for this game lol
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 March 2023 14:39 (two years ago)
as long as the pre-order hits on 5/12, why complain?
― deadmauZedong (voodoo chili), Monday, 27 March 2023 14:42 (two years ago)
it might just be the youtubers who rely on that stuff for c0ntent
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 March 2023 14:44 (two years ago)
yeah the guys who make like 2 hour videos breaking down a 1 min trailer
― ciderpress, Monday, 27 March 2023 14:49 (two years ago)
that said,
Join The Legend of #Zelda series producer, Eiji Aonuma, for roughly 10 minutes of gameplay from The Legend of Zelda: #TearsOfTheKingdom on 3/28 at 7:00 a.m. PT on our YouTube channel.▶️ https://t.co/uMUCfVjFQL pic.twitter.com/y49N4jRUTz— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) March 27, 2023

10 minutes of demo = 20 hour breakdown video

― Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:40 (two years ago)
i'm excited
― c u (crüt), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:43 (two years ago)
also i loled when "Your Tree Branch is badly damaged" popped up
― c u (crüt), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:44 (two years ago)
kinda wish i hadn't watched this, gonna be very impatient to get these abilities during the obligatory tutorial section lol
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:47 (two years ago)
the only limit is your imagination how quickly you'll get fired for not showing up
― it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:50 (two years ago)
finally a killer app for keese eyeballs
― Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:51 (two years ago)
nintendo saw ppl making flying machines and riding launched tree trunks and were like oh this is what you sickos like ok
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:54 (two years ago)
i love the idea to make the monster parts actually useful for a reason besides exchanging for fun bokoblin masks
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:59 (two years ago)
yeah would be cool if the items in general are more useful and varied
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:02 (two years ago)
sadly its not what i like doing myself in games even if the vids are cool
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:07 (two years ago)
you don't like to ascend?
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:10 (two years ago)
i've only just gotten to rito village, can i watch this overview without having anything being spoiled?
― diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:16 (two years ago)
ya it doesnt really reference botw at all
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:18 (two years ago)
seems like with the new powers the game will be pretty puzzley but not with just one or even a set number of solutions which is cool and unusual imo
I need to get back on the Master Sword quest. I managed to make it to the very end and oooooh shit nonono did not allocate my resources very well.
Can’t wait for this, so stoked.
― Cow_Art, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:20 (two years ago)
idk i would contend that a puzzle without a fixed solution or number of solutions is an obstacle, not a puzzle
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:20 (two years ago)
its a puzzling distinction
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:23 (two years ago)
tip re the trial of the master sword in the final trials theres nine ancient arrows three chests of three and finding them all makes it much easier
I paid zero attention to video games for decades and only got into BOTW about a year ago so this pre-release hype is all new to me.
I'm assuming there will be a shitload of people sprinting to finish the game ASAP for internet glory? How long would something like that take to do?
― joygoat, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:28 (two years ago)
i mean i'm sure at least one person will but these games are open and dont have much story to spoil so people will take their time
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:30 (two years ago)
Totk truly Puzz3D to BotW's jigsaw
― Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:31 (two years ago)
is this game looking to be more like a big DLC or more like a majora's mask
― diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:44 (two years ago)
the latter imo
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:45 (two years ago)
did botw have a long game-spanning sidequest chain i forget. if not they need to bring that back
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:51 (two years ago)
captured memories, kind of
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:53 (two years ago)
thats the main story isnt it?
i think tarrey town probably counts
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:54 (two years ago)
i hope you can build more new towns in this i hope its kind of like sim city
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:55 (two years ago)
xp yeah you're prob right
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:57 (two years ago)
i should play some botw ahead of this coming out
― na (NA), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:58 (two years ago)
dont think ive touched it since 2017 honestly, despite never finishing it. i think thats fine tho
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:00 (two years ago)
i tried and failed several times to do the trials to get the motorcycle, that was probably the last thing i did on it
― na (NA), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:03 (two years ago)
sad for you guys that you never got to ride the motorcycle that you never got to gas it up with raw meat
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:06 (two years ago)
not being able to save during it is what made it frustrating
― na (NA), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:07 (two years ago)
i got the link motorcycle on mario kart, basically the same thing
― it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:08 (two years ago)
ascend power looks pretty goofy
― na (NA), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:36 (two years ago)
they had to do something about the climbing raining situation
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:39 (two years ago)
maybe they took out rain entirely but the catch is that hyrule slowly becomes an arid wasteland
― c u (crüt), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 16:57 (two years ago)
maybe i'll understand the point of the mechanic better when i play it but i have to imagine there was a better solution for getting on top of stuff in a game largely about exploration than to slowly warp through the ceiling. odd choice for a feature to highlight. why not just bring back the grappling hook thing
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 28 March 2023 17:11 (two years ago)
maybe link is dead and is a ghost now and that's why he can gloop through ceilings
― na (NA), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 17:17 (two years ago)
Homing eyeballs! This looks wicked.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 21:59 (two years ago)
Okay I was gonna defend Ascend. Then I saw someone say it was created because people thought climbing was boring. Climbing was my clear favorite part of BOTW. Never Ascend.

― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 22:26 (two years ago)
Link can Onionhead through the ceiling because he is green
― Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 23:11 (two years ago)
no this is part of the beauty of climbing, it's like life, goals that seem achievable and then slip out of reach, or vice versa
― official representative of Roku's Basketshit in at least one alternate u (lukas), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 23:16 (two years ago)
If Nintendo based new features off of BotW videos, there will be some serious sicko shit with the Yiga Clan
― Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 23:20 (two years ago)
i'm ok with ascend but they really need to rework it so that it's explicitly a zonai hookshot
― c u (crüt), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 23:22 (two years ago)
xp featuring lots of mighty bananas hopefully
― octobeard, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 01:03 (two years ago)
Climbing that first tower was so satisfying.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 01:08 (two years ago)
Watched this with the kid earlier and he pointed out it had been uploaded 4 hours earlier and there was already a 2 hour long response video
― joygoat, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:09 (two years ago)
Also rain climbing sucks so much, I keep thinking there would be some element of clothing or recipe that let you climb in the rain but fuck no
― joygoat, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:13 (two years ago)
Speaking of towers, I assume sheika towers wont be the way maps unlock in this, given that's happened already. Unless this is set before BoTW... still isnt clear on that. The reverseo-chango skill has me wondering.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:18 (two years ago)
you can see towers in the background of that video theyre different towers tho
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:39 (two years ago)
Ah I should rewatch it hah.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:44 (two years ago)
gotta watch the two hour youtube really get into it
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:46 (two years ago)
I think, most of all, I shall want to Fuse a poe soul to my wooden boy
― Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 03:02 (two years ago)
Most maddening BOTW element is accidentally crouching when I'm panicky and trying to run from something horrible
― Cow_Art, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 03:05 (two years ago)
Already seeing some excellent memes out of all this.

Finally watched that video, new game (mechanics) look awesome. I rarely play my Switch, but will def. (eventually) get this.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 April 2023 14:21 (two years ago)
I'm unemployed and looking for a job, I'm not sure if this is coming out at the best or the worst possible moment
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 15:13 (two years ago)
heh
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 15:14 (two years ago)
i think the only way to manage it is some sort of rewards system (identify a possible job opp, reward with a shrine, update a section of the resume, shrine, 20 minutes straight of trying to find a job and failing, shrine). however, i have never successfully implemented this system for longer than a day. signed, unemployed happy guy

― it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:23 (two years ago)
break a weapon, drink
actually, don't do that. zelda would kill millions of people that way
― it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:24 (two years ago)
zelda is out of control she must be stopped
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:25 (two years ago)
i think this game is going to be great botw was amazing even tho it often wasnt that good as a game where it seems like they stepped up the game stuff with this one, lord willing it will have dungeons
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:31 (two years ago)
In the sky!
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:38 (two years ago)
seems like theres going to be underground stuff too i mean theres def going to be underground stuff theyve shown the caves we just dont know how deep it goes
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:39 (two years ago)
idk i am still skeptical that it will have dungeons i'll believe it when i see it. i do miss the dungeons though, you need a lot of cool overworld setpieces to make up for their absence and botw barely managed it
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:57 (two years ago)
one thing people (youtubers) picked up from the trailers is theres clearly two sets of powers one whos icons are lil pictures of the power and one that look like japanese characters, you could assume that one set is picked up in the tutorial area but then where do the other set come from, dungeons?
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 18:03 (two years ago)
I worry that I'll miss the amazing newness of experiencing BOTW for the first time, and that this sequel will just seem like a larger-than-usual DLC.
But as my therapist says, "stop anticipating what you're going to worry about, and worry about it when it actually happens" (or something)
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 18:08 (two years ago)
my theory is there are dungeons and you get an apostrophe from the goddess hylia every time you beat one
https://i.imgur.com/arTPF2r.png
― c u (crüt), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 21:50 (two years ago)
yeah those are prob the lil vials link carries on his hip that serve as the battery for the vehicles you build the more tears the further you can go which is a common formulation from life that we all know
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 22:11 (two years ago)
it could be that you get a power midway through the dungeon then use it to complete it where you get the tear which would be in the style of classic zelda dungeons
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 22:17 (two years ago)
Holy shit thats so obvious given the title, how'd I not spot it haha.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 23:55 (two years ago)

Using the Heroes Path mode to find all kinds of things I hadn’t discovered. It’s amazing how much is in this game. Last night I found the bowling with snowballs cabin.
― Cow_Art, Thursday, 13 April 2023 13:21 (two years ago)
its awesome to find new stuff i hope theres even more stuff in the new game
― lag∞n, Thursday, 13 April 2023 13:25 (two years ago)
As I wander i’m wearing the korok mask. I’m not trying to get 900, but those lil fuckers are everywhere! Do they ever show up inside shrines? I can’t remember.

― Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 April 2023 16:10 (two years ago)
i think on a long enough timeline they eventually make a zelda game that has like a surprise section where you play as zelda for a while like halfway through the game but its funny just how resilient they have been to the idea. also the botw nonlinear progression model kinda prevents stuff like that
― ciderpress, Thursday, 13 April 2023 16:16 (two years ago)
i also hope they make another 2d zelda someday, they did it with metroid which has me hopeful
― ciderpress, Thursday, 13 April 2023 16:17 (two years ago)

― official representative of Roku's Basketshit in at least one alternate u (lukas), Friday, 14 April 2023 05:39 (two years ago)
lol I know! When I played BOTW I was home during the pandemic and had the time to get lost in it. I'm going to have to play this in thirty minute segments every night with an alarm to make myself get to bed on time.
Adulting suuuuucks
― Cow_Art, Friday, 14 April 2023 10:22 (two years ago)
My Switch is kinda gathering dust, and my Playstation backlog is huuuuuuge, but I had such a good time with BOTW that it will be hard to resist. Still, the time before I get to it allows all the nerds to figure out many of the secrets and tricks, which I have no problem with. In fact, at this point it's tradition: I had the original NES, and I beat the original Zelda, but I could not have done it without the (printed! published! possibly mail-ordered!) guide.

Those constant disclaimers are hilarious.
Looks cool, like the perfect match of design/material and (relatively limited) console technology. Which makes sense, its predecessor basically perfected open world exploration.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 16:55 (two years ago)
My son and i were trying to ponder how many thousands of hours of footage are going to be on youtube 1 hour after it's released.
I don't know if it's good or bad but he's going to know everything about it within a week.
― joygoat, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 18:51 (two years ago)
i recommend looking at as little stuff as possible until you've played the game for like 30 hours
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 18:53 (two years ago)
A friend of mine bought a Switch maybe a year ago, and I'm pretty sure I convinced him to buy Breath of the Wild right off the bat. He finally got around to starting it today, and gave me a call with his mind blown. Of course he was overwhelmed, so I told him to doof around for many hours and then when he hits a wall do a quick Google to get over the hump. Compared to impenetrable stuff like Dark Souls or lots of Metroidvanias, it's actually not that bad, considering doing nothing is one of the most important things you can do in Zelda.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:01 (two years ago)
The gentle learning curb is one of the best parts.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 23:45 (two years ago)
the idea of someone buying a switch without getting that game is weird but i guess it can happen now that theres 6 years worth of other games and not 1 or 2

― hrep (H.P), Saturday, 13 May 2023 23:11 (one year ago)
Rotation was doing my head until my kid taught me. Not sure I can do it in words but basically it’s a three part move: get the horizontal in the right position so that the vertical move will rotate into the desired final vertical state, then put the horizontal to its desired final state. Now I can’t remember why I was confused.

With nice headphones, just listening to Link walk around was so satisfying in BotW. The elegance of the piano in that game and the more eerie ethereal string motifs in TotK (so far) are so expressive and unique in gaming and so incredibly immersive. ― LaMDA barry-stanners (||||||||), Sunday, 14 May 2023 12:27 (one year ago)
Xp Yeah given the level of praise these games have received for how well-designed the world is, that opening island was a real chore. Spent ages fooling around trying to get to where I needed to be and wondering what I was missing before realising eventually that I would have to retrace my steps and go round the other way, which was in itself a bit of a nightmare. Felt like it had been designed for you to travel in one direction with no thought given to how you could get back.the world itself once you’re let loose is a real joy to climb / ride / glide / sail / surf / drive / fly / bounce / jetpack / time travel around though so I’m prepared to overlook it Also even while that opening island was testing my patience I was still so happy to be back in this world, which is by some margin my fav video game space

I glanced at a couple of streamers playing it, and the first thing that came to mind was "Doom" vs. "Doom Eternal," in the sense that the first one was an inspired reinvention of a beloved old series, and the new one took that as a starting point, refined and tweaked the gameplay and then added a bunch more to it, for better or for worse. Which is to say, this new game looks like a lot! Or, yeah, a loooot! There was a story on I think Kotaku about how long people are taking just to move on from the tutorial area.

I’m all about getting the surface and sky maps right now. I collect shrines as I go as travel points but have only done a few thus far.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 21:57 (one year ago)
I started with looking for shrines near the Lookout, then Rito village by way of meandering through the west/northwest non-canyon parts of the map to stock up on shrine stuff and check out some caves and find rupees to buy the Snowquill hat (I think like 80% of that purchase was funded by helping Sign Guy). I did the first gloom/underworld quest, which blew my mind for managing to be both beautiful and sinister. I'm not sure I've encountered anything like it in any game. I'm on my way to Goron City now, then might see if there's anything going on in the Lost Woods. I'll leave the Gerudos til last if I can.
It's been a long time since my BOTW playthrough, but this game seems to give a bit more direction in the early phases..? like, it clearly wants you to go to Rito village first, and then lots of people you encounter talk about or are going to Woodland Stable/Goron City as a hint of your next stop. Nothing wrong with it given how expansive and frankly overwhelming this game is (god there is so much stuff, and so much stuff to do), or maybe I've just forgotten and BOTW had some early-on signposting too.
Fun/useful tip if you haven't stumbled upon it already: if you see block fall from the sky near you, climb on top of it and use rewind on it and it'll take you back up. It's handy for surveying the landscape or accessing floating sky stuff or falling/gliding to parts of the map that might be tedious to traverse on foot.
― salsa shark, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:27 (one year ago)
I never think about using rewind.
― nate woolls, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 22:59 (one year ago)
the game really doesn't let you loose as soon as you get to the surface because you don't have the paraglider and if you've seen a commercial you know there's a paraglider
so i did lookout landing, and then robbie tells you to go to hateno for purah pad stuff, i don't know what's in store there but if there are ability upgrades like in BOTW i want to get them asap. so i started heading in that direction but wanted to stop in kakariko first, and then i went into the great fairy chasm because i felt very confident that the way to access the 5th ring was to ascend past the barrier from the underground (turns out that was wrong), and i just ended up spending a ton of time underground. that's where i am now.
in both of the big underground areas so far, i find it really hard to stop. they're just massive, the darkness is really good at piquing my curiosity and there's always a fast travel flower in the distance to walk towards, and there's no natural stopping point because it's all the same biome. it just keeps going and going, there's no point where i think "oh this area is slightly different, i'll come back here later." i can see myself getting really burnt out on it.
Muddlebuds are great. Not tried a puffshroom yet.― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, May 16, 2023 11:46 AM (seven hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

puffshrooms are a tasty treat you can take out of your pocket to basically reset combat. if you're surrounded by multiple enemies they just grind things to a halt. it's a really strong effect and it lasts a long time.
― ✖, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 23:37 (one year ago)
I wandered for a while not realising that I had to do at least the start of the main quest because thats how you get the parglide. Felt silly when I realised.
Since then I've also been wandering trying to hit shrines and towers, ocasionally pop back up to Great Sky Island and grab goodies there (those vending-machine bubble tool packs are v useful!).
The side quest I'm doing that I think will be useful is the newspaper one because it drives you to hit up all the stables, so you cover lot of map and find things on the way.
I spent 30 minutes last night trying to rescue that fucking horn player out of the hole and gave up. I think I was doing it right, it just didnt want to work! I feel like a bad engineer.

It works at least sometimes with ones you don't see fall too!
My most memorable moment so far - trying to get a Korok across a river to his pal, I place him on (not thinking to attach him to) a glider, attach a rocket, and blast us straight into a cliff face. The Korok falls into the river and gets swept downstream, I desperately pursue (I assume he'd have respawned, but I couldn't do that to the guy), eventually finding him miles away beached on a river bank. Slog my way back to his pal and cross the river more sensibly this time.
After the opening island I meandered for a while, went to the depths, then did the Rito trip since everything was pointing that way. I then decided to do a Hateno trip just for fun, and am somewhat regretting it as I repeatedly get my ass handed to me by tough monsters along the way.

My korok highlights have been strapping one directly to a rocket and dropping another down a long, rocky hill. A bit mean but got the job done

one small thing that i like is that if you open a chest and get a weapon (for example) but your inventory is already full, it gives you the option to drop a weapon from your inventory and pick up the new weapon all in one move

Man this game is like Godfather 2 and Empire Strikes Back. A sequel that not only lives up the the huge success and creative breakthrough of the original, but exceeds it on its own terms. Holy shit Nintendo. BotW was my favorite game of all time. This may become the new one

I am really confused by the Tumi gust power... thing. I click on him and he gusts me... sideways? How is that meant to help me get UP somewhere. I feel like I'm missing something. I ended up climbing to Hebra peak instead.

This game is so huge, how the hell did they get it all on that little cartridge?
― nate woolls, Thursday, 18 May 2023 00:56 (one year ago)
It’s nuts. The bookkeeping and memory management must be wild. Use the rewind on arbitrary objects and you’ll see they are persisting the trajectories forever (or what seems like it). Black magic stuff.

― lag∞n, Thursday, 18 May 2023 00:58 (one year ago)
Thinking about something like RDR2 - maybe the maps are bigger (maybe?) but that game feels really sparse and empty compared to this game, and that came on two Blu Ray discs plus an additional approx 30 minutes of downloading!
― nate woolls, Thursday, 18 May 2023 01:14 (one year ago)
tulin's power seems pretty useful for gliding around and trying to reach just barely out of reach places
i'm still holding out hope that the game will eventually give me a hookshroom or hookfruit that i can fuse to my weapon AND my shield so i can have not one but two hookshots

Bow and arrow seems to be HEAPs more neccesary/useful in this than BOTW, on that note.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 18 May 2023 05:47 (one year ago)
I don’t think durians exist anymore. And I’ve barely seen any radishes. Or truffles.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 18 May 2023 06:44 (one year ago)
Truffles are def about! Ive found a few. I cant recall where now. In caves maybe?
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 18 May 2023 07:52 (one year ago)
The ones I’ve seen were in caves, aye. I definitely need more yellow hearts. One more shrine will take me to 7 red hearts and one and 3/5 stamina wheels.

i've tried to avoid a lot of videos of stuff like people building crazy contraptions but is there any way to actually steer the "cars" that you can build? i haven't done too much with it yet because it doesn't seem that practical in terms of getting around. it seems more like a fun creative minigame that is separate from the main game.
― na (NA), Thursday, 18 May 2023 19:39 (one year ago)
i guess instead of asking that i should play around with it
― na (NA), Thursday, 18 May 2023 19:40 (one year ago)
yeah there is a steering wheel attachment. haven't found any in the gacha machines yet but i've found a few laying around in the early game. there's one by the lake in the stable near lookout landing

As much as I am not super into the fire temple I do really love the way the temple music builds from sparse and mildly menacing to more complex and triumphant as you progress. Makes it less of a slog, like, hey now that I've done 2/5 things there's a fun jazzy riff in the mix, what will I get next?
― salsa shark, Thursday, 18 May 2023 23:10 (one year ago)
From what little I've spoiled for myself about this game, it looks kinda ... hard.

The enemies seem to hit harder! Or maybe it's just cos I'm back to few hearts. They seem to stagger me more too.

I’ve been experimenting with beating bosses using devices. My favorite is the simplest: add 20 beam emitters to a hover stone, put the hover stone in the air, attack the boss, then hit the stone with an arrow. It’ll instantly delete everything.
― Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 19 May 2023 15:18 (one year ago)
Now that I write this I’m going to try just putting 20 beam emitters on the trolly device and pushing it into the boss room.
― Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 19 May 2023 15:19 (one year ago)
i'm so dumb about the machines. i did almost the whole shrine that introduces you to big wheels before realizing that you can hit them to make them roll. i accomplished like 75% of the shrine just with the "move with infinite hand, reverse with time reverse" trick.
― na (NA), Friday, 19 May 2023 19:06 (one year ago)
I've done the same with forgetting to use ascend. I was in the depths climbing this mushroomy tree, thinking "how could I possibly get right on top of it?" then facpalming myself.
Best LOL moment from my weekend of loads of play:going after the autobuild, and discovering the whole shebang was guarded by MASTER KOGHA. So THATS what happened after he fell in the hole! I LOVED that bit of lore followup.
In the subsequent travels, I assembled a glider with fans and steering column and glided toward a distant lighroot, tried my best to aim at it, but smacked into it nose-first. Well, needs must.

Question for anyone who has it or knows - this magic scepter I found. It seems like a once off. Will it break? Am I meant to use it just to shoot spells and not hit anyone (in which case, will it break?).
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 24 May 2023 00:30 (one year ago)
SO MUCH RAIN and so many blood moons and my game doesn't let me skip the cutscene for some reason
― salsa shark, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 07:34 (one year ago)

Rains just as much too but at least you can get around that now
― octobeard, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 08:36 (one year ago)
@Trayce:
The sceptres/wands/staves will break, but there are ways to get more. It's better to just fuse them with gems and shoot magic rather than bashing enemies with them. Either way they'll break eventually.
The wand system is pretty sick in this game imo

― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 25 May 2023 05:14 (one year ago)
Theyre certainly not where they used to be in the cliffs just above Lakeside Stable.
Oh which reminds me - its weird seeing the dragons just idly surfind round in the sky now. They dont seem to dip down like they used to. Ive been able to surf near one on the way down from a sky archipelago, and when you get close they do still trigger the music and the updraft, and you *can* still shoot scales/horns etc off them.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 25 May 2023 07:05 (one year ago)
Yeah I shot a scale off one within the first couple of days, but - get this - that was UNDERGROUND. First time I leapt into a chasm was at Kakariko and Naydra was just gliding around down there. Blew my mind re: the scale.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 25 May 2023 07:16 (one year ago)
I had a similar experience where I was in the Depths but I heard the distinctive, lovely dragon music before I saw anything. I was so surprised! Then I looked up and saw one of them just working their way up thru a Chasm.
A note on the Depths/Chasms: the geography is the inverse of the surface. Mountains are valleys, bodies of water are walls. Also the lightroots/shrines correspond to one another.
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Thursday, 25 May 2023 13:52 (one year ago)

― lag∞n, Thursday, 25 May 2023 14:29 (one year ago)
game seemed a little slow to get started, then I actually went to Lookout Landing

― official representative of Roku's Basketshit in at least one alternate u (lukas), Thursday, 25 May 2023 20:32 (one year ago)
I read somewhere that shrines don't always correspond with lightroots, but all lightroots are attached to shrines. Unknown if confirmed, though I'm sure someone's already 100%ed the damn thing.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 26 May 2023 00:11 (one year ago)
Assumed fusing a diamond to a weapon would be extra durable. Was sorely disappointed.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 26 May 2023 00:12 (one year ago)
xxxp Trayce wrt to the dragons I was near the chasm at Kakariko and heard the music only to witness Naydra descending into it! Was a glorious sight - decided to fall down with her, and then realized YOU CAN GRAB ONTO HER AND RIDE HER. Basically some Shadow of the Colossus shit - which just made me feel incredibly giddy. Seems like they regularly fly around in all three regions and you can use them as transport!!! Just make sure to have the appropriate armor to protect you form their elements.
― octobeard, Friday, 26 May 2023 00:25 (one year ago)
I wondered about that! Given I wasnt getting frozen when I was right up next to Naydra. It now occurs to me I was dressed for the Rito temple so.

― octobeard, Friday, 26 May 2023 00:36 (one year ago)
IME, shrines on the sky islands don't correspond to lightroots, but the ones on the surface do. I haven't yet found a counter-example. It is wild that I have logged almost 80 hours in this game and it is still surprising me. I just found my first low-gravity zone for example.

― Jeff, Monday, 29 May 2023 22:17 (one year ago)
But overall I found it much easier to eschew the trial and error of the mine carts and just use a combination of climbing around and ascend to skip them.
― Jeff, Monday, 29 May 2023 22:18 (one year ago)
Yeah this is what half of reddit are saying too - ascend + fire hydrants. I tried this cheese but I just got hopelessly lost and also nowhere I tried would let me ascend anyway.

― official representative of Roku's Basketshit in at least one alternate u (lukas), Thursday, 1 June 2023 23:05 (one year ago)
Yeah, that's (the Wind Temple boss, I'm assuming you mean) is a cool fight conceptually, but in practice is deeply annoying. Conversely, the Water Temple boss is conceptually irritating, but in practice isn't so bad.
I finished the main temples and did the subsequent goose chase around Hyrule Castle/Phantom Ganon boss fight and now I'm not really even sure where the game wants me to go next. So it's back to aimlessly trawling the Depths for treasure.
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 2 June 2023 15:56 (one year ago)
i enjoyed the wind temple boss because diving through them ice holes is real satisfying
spoilers for great plateau+depths area: was probably expecting too much but i was really disappointed in the resolution to the big bargainer statue quest - the dialogue made me think it would go in a much more interesting direction and maybe provide some small gameplay perk you didn't have before. i actually stayed up way later than i meant to because i was so curious about what would happen. instead it was just unlocked the next bargainer shop item and threw in a heart/stamina container. doubly disappointing because it was basically all there was to do at the great plateau, which was one of the more intriguing areas to revisit
i do think this game improves on BOTW's problems with intrinsic rewards but still not great
― ✖, Friday, 2 June 2023 19:00 (one year ago)
to me getting the outfits is the most important thing
― lag∞n, Friday, 2 June 2023 19:02 (one year ago)
outfits are imo one of the only good intrinsic rewards the games offer and totk seems to be better about how they're distributed than botw but in this case the outfit reward is the exact same thing you'd get for randomly stumbling on any random bargainer statue that isn't missing its eyeballs
― ✖, Friday, 2 June 2023 19:10 (one year ago)
that one was kind of a lot and i got really confused for a minute as to where the statue was after i already had two eyeballs in it, i somehow lost it, it turned out to just be way lower than i was looking
― lag∞n, Friday, 2 June 2023 19:14 (one year ago)
it's annoying how you get basically the same 5-minute cut scene each time you beat a temple boss
― na (NA), Friday, 2 June 2023 19:19 (one year ago)
I should not have purchased this on an overriding impulse on Friday night. Digging it but damn is the Great Sky Prologue/Tutorial/First Biome way too long. The open nature of the rest of the game is kinda contradictory to the more on-rails needs of the tutorial. I spent a good 2-3 hours wandering round and exploring the snow-packed sections before realizing I needed to hit the waypoint in another island first to activate goals.
― Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Monday, 5 June 2023 15:53 (one year ago)
Oh and the “should not have purchased on Friday” is because this weekend was also a 2-day meetup I attended so I wouldn’t get home till later in the evening and then play till like 1-2am because it was that compelling. That was my mistake.
― Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Monday, 5 June 2023 15:58 (one year ago)
I also explored the snow section too soon, but actually really appreciated that I could - someone new to the series might have missed the tutorial on cooking beforehand and just moved elsewhere.
If anything it reminded me a lot of the Great Plateau. You were locked into it similar to this, it took a somewhat similar amount of time/effort to trudge through, though the shrines were accessible initially, limiting the notions of "early" exploration.
I think this expresses one of the main differences of this game vs BotW. The original was a bit more structurally open from the get go, and far less "linear". TotK, while still being largely open, has a more defined and structured set of things to do early on, both in the tutorial and the world at large.
I think that works great for players who have played BotW first, and builds on the existent magic of the world. For those coming in fresh, the "mystery" and novelty of the world as perfectly presented in the OG is not quite as well laid out. I.e. I feel the game is 10/10 for those who loved BotW, 9/10 for n00bs.
― octobeard, Monday, 5 June 2023 21:06 (one year ago)
in short, feels to me like exploring the world *was* the game in botw, while totk is more objective/task oriented. of course you can ignore those objectives and just build death machines if you like.
exploring the depths has felt the most similar to botw to me, where the joy is in uncovering the map and making discoveries. its also a higher degree of difficulty, reminds me of botw when i would get blindsided by a strong enemy or fall from a height when running out of stamina. that doesn't happen so much in the overworld in this game

I spent ages last night on that shrine "built for rails". I'd keep thinking I totes had it, with my various slapped together slabs but theyd all fall off halfway along where the rail broke. I was ready to give up but something tickled the logic/sceience part of my brain and I started being methodical, then actually worked it out. Now maybe other ppl would've instantly gone "oh yeah you'd need to do this" but I never do, and I was pleased with myself!
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 5 June 2023 22:28 (one year ago)
That said I cheated the section before it by just railgrinding, which is a suprising mechanic. You just dont fall off as long as yr moving!

I’d kill for a game that was entirely shrines (i.e., something similar to that Captain Toad spin-off that was just a collection of Captain Toad stages).
― Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 6 June 2023 13:48 (one year ago)
maybe everyone already knows this but you can attach a ruby to a shield and wear it on your back and it will keep you warm in cold areas. you can also hold it out to melt items frozen in ice without having to wear down a fire weapon. presumably you can do the same thing with a different gem to stay cool in the desert.

i love doing the shrines and always stop to solve them when i discover one. i've found it's a good way to break up the exploration (and stop myself from playing for 6 hours straight)
there have been a couple of shrines where i have tricked myself into thinking the solution is more complicated than it actually was. in the spring shrine, i thought i'd have to launch a spring to the second level and catch it with ultrahand, then activate the spring on the second level to complete the shrine. took about 30 mins of trying and failing that tactic before i realized i could just attach three springs together to launch me to the top level
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 6 June 2023 19:30 (one year ago)

My kid needs one more stamina ring to get the master sword from the dragons head
― calstars, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 22:05 (one year ago)
I've found some of the combat shrines in this to be very challenging and engrossing, so I too have passed on them to return in a more focused effort later. I didn't do that all too often in BotW.
Speaking of Shrines and their power ups, I've found myself upping stamina far far earlier than I would have in Botw. Already have a 2nd full ring and only 6 hearts total and that stamina boost has really paid off in terms of climbing and gliding. Much easier to just boost defense via armor and potions when necessary.
xp wrt the ruby binding to sheilds and weapons for warmth, I've found a few weapons with rubies attached to them from some foes and bringing them to the kid at Tarrey Town to break them up is an easy way to add some dosh to your stash.

― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 7 June 2023 01:15 (one year ago)
I got an extra couple of hearts early doors and then went for two full stamina rings asap - gliding is such a big part of this you need it more. Then I took hearts hearts hearts - up to about 16 now, and now going for more stamina. Haven’t looked for the master sword yet!Had a ride on a dragon this morning though…
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 7 June 2023 11:03 (one year ago)

― Jeff, Wednesday, 7 June 2023 13:22 (one year ago)
i kept on getting one-shotted in the depths so i prioritized hearts. there are fewer hearty items abound this time around. meanwhile, there's a restless cricket under every rock so i have more energizing elixirs than i know what to do with.

― Jeff, Thursday, 8 June 2023 23:55 (one year ago)
I suck at defending myself so I do 2-3 hearts for every 1 stamina upgrade :/ I have ~14 hearts and two full circles.
Lately I've been enjoying spelunking, esp finding the cherry blossom trees and Misko's gear. I'm a bit disappointed that the game hasn't yet presented me with a nutty Yakuza-style side quest where I get to model my fashionable outfits to an adoring audience. Maybe it's coming.
I've been working my way around the map clockwise from the west, trying to do the above-ground then below-ground stuff before moving on, and I really wish there were easier options for below-ground traversal. More bone horses, or crafting stations with better item variety. Some of those lightroots are difficult to reach. I find the emptiness is also a bit of a challenge. Stumbling across Yiga hideouts or abandoned mines is joyous for the feeling of finally having achieved something down there.
― salsa shark, Friday, 9 June 2023 10:33 (one year ago)

Anyone else kinda hit a burnout with these nu-Zelda games? I never finished BOTW and I’m kinda losing momentum on this one too. As inventive as they are, they still do rely a lot on the standard open world trope of dotting the map with a handful of the same activities. Also maybe I’m misremembering, but are the shrines noticeably easier this time around? Pretty sure I relented and looked up some solutions in BOTW but been mostly cruising through these. Pretty chill level of difficulty though, not a complaint.Anyway, quality game. Got a coupla dozen hours in. Might just take a break.
― circa1916, Saturday, 10 June 2023 23:05 (one year ago)
shrines are harder and better in this one imo
― lag∞n, Saturday, 10 June 2023 23:20 (one year ago)
I agree the shrines are harder this time
Also agree a bit on burnout though, but maybe from a different angle. I usually try to complete as many quests as possible before doing final bosses, so this game feels... insurmountable. My moments of burnout come from feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff still to do.
― salsa shark, Saturday, 10 June 2023 23:45 (one year ago)
Yeah I just got the master sword and I find myself calculating “how much” of the game I want to do before sticking to the main quest and finishing it.
― ryan, Saturday, 10 June 2023 23:54 (one year ago)
I’m mostly finding the shrines easier, but I’d never played a puzzle based game before BOTW so the experience I had playing that has helped massively.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 11 June 2023 05:22 (one year ago)
Some stuff feels easier than BOTW simply due to the mechanics available - like how easy it is to get on top of a Talus now (though I feel weird going up its bum).

― lag∞n, Sunday, 11 June 2023 12:54 (one year ago)
The option to do things in any order and play the game in a way that fits your personality is part of the deal. Just like in BOTW, you can go fight the final boss at any time without doing any of the other quests / dungeons. Personally I ended up playing through all main quests because I wanted to experience the adventure
That said, if you want to play through all main quests then you will need to go to Hyrule Castle at some point after getting the 4 sages - and if you want to do things "in order" then yeah do it before Mineru's quest
― c u (crüt), Sunday, 11 June 2023 12:59 (one year ago)

(tarrey town spoilers) something i haven't seen enough people talking about: the monster diorama feature is so cool. when i first showed my bokoblin picture i figured at best it would recreate, at best, a black bokoblin model maybe carrying the same weapon because we know the camera captures weapon info too... it not only recreated that, it recreated the boko's stone armor and exact pose! i'd really like to know how it works, whether it's a 1:1 recreation of the picture i took or an approximation of where the active animation was... i have three pictures of a horriblin doing its ouchy-butt animation, i should see if it would result in 3 slightly different models
though i guess it's not far off from what the recall ability does. it's just nutty to me what this game is capable of handling on switch hardware.

Water temple down. It was the easiest one of the lot so far, and the low gravity everywhere was doing my head in. Sporinging around, floating in big bubbles... fun!

just did this - also with 2 sages down. quite an adventure.
and my main question now is - do y'all tromp around with your buddies, or you do wait to call them when you need them? they get in my way sometimes.

i mostly kept the flying guy on cause hes helpful for flying and brought out the smashing guy in caves, never used the rest, tho theyd def help with fighting if you had them all out

― lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 20:47 (one year ago)
don't mind the occasional stuff like yunobo accidentally setting me on fire or tulin blowing away my goodies cause it adds to the game's roadrunner/coyote-esque humor
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Monday, 26 June 2023 20:57 (one year ago)
a lot of conversations where Link does his ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ thing to explain that he's actually already done the next step
looking forward to that part. "oh you have a dramatic speech to give me about how important it is to do some quest? yeah i'm way ahead of you"
― official representative of Roku's Basketshit in at least one alternate u (lukas), Monday, 26 June 2023 21:42 (one year ago)
i do like it when the quest is "find 10 bright-eyed crabs" and you get to be like, "what you didn't think i'd have 10 bright-eyed crabs, you nitwit, you fool..."
― ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Monday, 26 June 2023 21:44 (one year ago)
I still only have tulin cause I guess I'm just gonna explore the entire map before progressing main quest, my biggest irrational pet peeve in this game is how he's always flying in and out of my pocket and making an annoying sound effect every time, it drives me nuts
― ✖, Monday, 26 June 2023 21:54 (one year ago)
I usually only have:- Tulin out if I'm general exploring, handy for flying/bridging gaps- will add Yunobo if in a cave, he sorts out gems and walls handily- I'll add the others in a boss fight. They can pretty handily dispatch minor mobs alone!
I finshed off all of the Hyrule castle multifight quite easily thanks to them, esp because diff monsters call for diff use cases eg Hinox can be headshot by Tulin, Gibdo can be zapped by Riju, etc. I tell you what though I went into that not expecting wave after wave of fake-Zelda monsters to be chucked at me, phew.

That happened to me in the middle of the bloody lightning temple - the one place where you absolutely have to have arrows. I had to use a travel portal, run off and buy a pile, and come back.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 30 June 2023 01:54 (one year ago)
I hover around 250 arrows. If I get below 170 I get nervous. Smash every crate and pot, kill every bokoblin archer. I rarely buy any.

And now I have Calip the nerd and Tauro the swole islander getting all excited about mysterious zonai ruins when I already know their purpose/end game haha. Why am I not telling them? Stupid. Still, at least I didnt know I was missing some cool armor sets from not having done this bit before now. Seems like its actually completely skippable which is a bit odd.

I'm getting the occasional pristine weapon from amiibo drops and chests. I'm too scared to use/waste them.
Oh, speaking of which do y'all know about the lava-octorok weapon boost? This time round, instead of de-rusting old weapons, they suck them in, do some magic on them and spit them out with a boosted base HP. If you then take it to a 2nd octorok and do the same thing, it'll boost further. There's a chain of 3 or 4 'roks along the lakebed where the lizard lakes are at the north of death mountain. I tried it on a cobble crusher and got it from 5 to 16.

Ive seen people make things like spinny wheels with frcking lasers on their heads, and laser homing carts - do they also damage oneself if you get in the way?
I also dont use devices much. Heck I'll go all the way back to a stable to get my damn horse when I could just quickbuild a grass skiff or a little wheelycart, but I just never think to.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 19 July 2023 22:47 (one year ago)
I mainly just build the wing/fans/steering stick thing or the dirigible to get up really high. An occasional boat. All the other stuff is cool, but I don't have the patience for it. So much rotating objects in space.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 19 July 2023 22:57 (one year ago)
Speaking of balloons reminds me : are the black areas on the depths map completely inaccessible, ie stuck to the "roof" and can't be climbed over? I think I have been futilely trying to climb walls I shouldn't bother. I know they correspond to deeper bodies of water. I ran into issues because I was trying to find the lightroot corresponding to the shrine next to Duelling Peaks stable. It seems either there isn't one, or I cant find it.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 19 July 2023 23:00 (one year ago)

Ok the last part of getting the master sword was one of the most mf'ing epic things I've ever done in a game.
― Jeff, Saturday, 29 July 2023 16:33 (one year ago)
I eventually got the schema for the 'autobuddy' autobuild or whatever it's called - the one built from a homing cart + stabiliser + flamethrower - and found it super handy for battles with lots of enemies.
I finished most of the quests and the main story on the weekend. The despair and darkness in the last stretch before the final boss felt oppressive and interminable and losing access to the sages made it even more uncomfortable.
And that last stretch felt super long and very tense! By the time I got to the real battles I was actually shaking from the build-up and the pressure, like did I bring enough healing items? If I die how far back do I have to start from? Do I have to go through the unpleasant doom tunnel again? Or am I stuck here forever? etc
Fight was challenging but not insurmountable. Ganon v2's health bar extending across the screen was a great touch, did not expect that. Also OF COURSE Ganon was going to eat his stone and go dragon, but I am slow and completely didn't even consider that until it was happening, but I'm kind of grateful for that because it was a cool surprise.
The whole endgame experience was weirdly really emotional for me, but maybe that's just what happens after 80? 100? 120? hours of investment.

― Jeff, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 20:32 (one year ago)
I was actually pretty burnt out for the last couple weeks of it, like, I was feeling panicked about how much time it was sucking away from other hobbies. A sensible, non-obsessive person would've parked it and come back to it, or balanced it better with other things, or said 'hey maybe you don't need to finish nearly all the side quests before you finish the main story', but that is not me. And now that it's done I'm a bit sad. Can't win!
― salsa shark, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 21:12 (one year ago)
i bounced off of it after getting two of the sages. i'm sure i'll come back to it eventually, but i wasn't feeling naturally drawn to it or getting any immediate satisfaction from it and i don't play games out of a sense of duty to complete them. it's a very impressive game, but for whatever reason the feeling of endless possibilities in a massive world filled me less with the joy of freedom and more the dread of pointlessness. i'm not sure why this hit me that way and botw didn't, maybe just too much of a good thing, or maybe it's just me. i think it is just me. my favorite part of totk so far was the depths, something about how my options were curtailed down there made it feel more like something to chew on, steady progress rather than just randomly doing fairly easy things in whatever order punctuated by a somewhat more annoying thing here and there. if i could pinpoint a moment when it started to lose me a bit, the first time i encountered a section that indicated i should build a four-wheeled vehicle and then drive it over nearby terrain i was not impressed by the experience
sorry for being a bummer!

Latest "did not know" weapon combo I found was the forest dweller spear - you can fuse it to "burst" items like dazzlefruit and it wont disappear, it'll recharge!
Was handy in the depths against mini frox and skellies.

Sorry by "it" i mean the fruit you attach.
I think I was just doing things I wasn’t supposed to yet. Trying to clear out lurelin village while only having 5 hearts. Just finished my first temple (water) and feeling I am playing the game more as intended now. Lots of fun!
― H.P, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 12:58 (one year ago)
gotta get the hearts
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 14:24 (one year ago)
Heck yeah my first task was to find and knock over as many shrines as I could, main quest be damned.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 24 August 2023 00:30 (one year ago)
Still have 5 hearts but now I have an extra stamina wheel (ocd meant I needed to finish it after getting one extra part). Hearts from here on out. Currently meeting the founders of hyrule in a cutscene. Looks like Zelda’s travelled further than imagined. Oh well she can wait; shrines to explore!
― H.P, Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:13 (one year ago)
Finally opened this, put about 200 hours in over the last month. Just excellent. Amazed that they really nailed it.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 13:22 (one year ago)
I finally decided to give Ganondorf another shot (after initially stumbling upon him earlier). Lost again, not enough gloom busting food. I really just spend the majority of time just exploring. I’m still finding new caves and wells. Still need to beat a bunch of the Gleeoks. Many side questions remaining, but I think I’ve finished all the main ones, with the exception of the final battle. Need to find all the damn armor too.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:34 (one year ago)
I've been putting off fighting Ganondorf for weeks now. I'm still running around doing sidequests. Amazing game
― treefell, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:53 (one year ago)
The Ganondorf battle really is something else — they went above and beyond atoning for the disappointing final battle in Breath of the Wild
This game is to BOTW what A Link to the Past was to Zelda 1
― c u (crüt), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 15:26 (one year ago)
Just picked this back up on a flight after playing Elden Ring for so long. I really need to be in the right mindset for this game after switching it up. I can't easily go "back and forth". It's so much easier to get side tracked in this game too.
BTW given I've started up Elden Ring this year, and will likely dive into BG3 once I've beaten that and TotK, this is looking to be a completely ridiculous year in gaming for me. And I'm really looking forward to that new Mario game and Dave the Diver once it's on Switch.
― octobeard, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 01:40 (one year ago)
I bought this months ago & have just started playing it. First Zelda game too. I love exploring the islands even if I don’t know where the fuck I’m going. When I managed to fly to Time Temple it felt incredible.
― gyac, Saturday, 28 September 2024 11:28 (seven months ago)
Intriguing! I imagine most people don't start with this one, or at least play "Breath of the Wild" first. Most of the complaints I've seen about "Tears of the Kingdom" come from people who prefer "Breath." I wonder if the converse will be true? You are a living experiment!
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 28 September 2024 14:26 (seven months ago)
those people are nuts, frankly, Tears is better on almost every metric imo
― Nhex, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:33 (seven months ago)
I actually never finished Tears. I got deep into Elden Ring which ended up scratching the itch way better. Breath of the Wild is still my all time favorite though, and perhaps I'd feel differently myself about TotK if I had started it first.
― octobeard, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:39 (seven months ago)
yeah agreed a lot of people seem to feel that way tho and it sold a lot less, prob has a lot to do with being such a direct sequel xp
― lag∞n, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:40 (seven months ago)
will say tho that in tears the added terrain was pretty uninspired compared to the original map, all these new uh levels sky tunnels and depths are pretty samey across levels where the original map is a wonder of variation
― lag∞n, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:44 (seven months ago)
Yeah the rewards also are a bit more repetitive too, and while the first game felt relaxing and rewarding in its own way (and all the shrines were so on point), Tears felt less "relaxing" and more frustrating at times. I need to go back and at least beat it, but I'm not going to 100% it like BotW (okay I didn't get all 900 korok seeds, but everything else).
― octobeard, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:54 (seven months ago)
That said - I'm excited to try Echoes of Wisdom!
― octobeard, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:55 (seven months ago)
i found botw shrines pretty generic and boring, ones in totk are better imo but still not great for the same reasons, a lot of the game play in botw wasnt that great it was more a cool world to run around in, i think totk improves on the game play part
― lag∞n, Saturday, 28 September 2024 17:59 (seven months ago)

― calstars, Sunday, 29 September 2024 11:46 (seven months ago)
I spent so much time exploring and doing all of the side quests on BOTW. After that I was a little burnt out and so working with the same map made it hard for me to want to spend as much time on TOTK. TOTK is probably objectively better and def has a better big boss fight, but it felt less immersive because of the familiarity.
― Cow_Art, Sunday, 29 September 2024 12:05 (seven months ago)
yeah i think if theyd made the new terrain more varied it wouldve helped, someone pointed out that theres a cave underneath the akkala citadel ruins why didnt they let you go in the citadel and look around instead its just a cave that looks like all the other caves
― lag∞n, Sunday, 29 September 2024 14:51 (seven months ago)
would love it if they reined it in for the next one and made something thats halfway between the new and old formula in size vs structure. dunno if they would though, no other dev seems willing to walk back open world map size once they make the jump to it but maybe nintendo could get away with it

Had to abandon my main horse halfway through climbing down a mountain - Fair enough, it’s not a mule - but felt guilty about it cos I knew I was never going back there. Thankfully reached a stable on the other side and was able to stable said horse there, but if they let you teleport a horse to the stable, why can’t you teleport it at the shrine travel points? Anyway.

the thing people seem to really want is the old style dungeons where you have to look around a maze to find the special item which will allow you to get to the boss, but nintendo seems very dedicated to the i guess open exploration model where you can just do whatever you want in any order cheese the dungeons go directly to the final boss etc which is pretty cool but some things do suffer for it

I enjoyed what I’ve played of TOTF but I miss the sheer wonder of discovering things in BOTW, and the slow accretion of understanding “oh this place is next to that place”, and the way all journeys seem infinitely long at the start of the game when you don’t know what’s coming up next, etc etc - it really needs a new entirely map for that. Or even - just quitting at perfection and never making another

Is Echoes of Wisdom closer to the remade Links Awakening then?
Which reminds me, I never did finish LA.
And I never did finish this, either! I started the Big Boss fight, couldnt work out how to get down to the Big Man (I kept going round in circles in some caves under the castle) and then I gave up.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 30 September 2024 05:31 (seven months ago)
I got stuck really early on in BOTW and abandoned it - mostly due to frustration at a shrine I couldn't complete.
So when I played TOTK 90% of the map was new to me and I got that full wonder of discovering things from that. I put something like 250 hours into TOTK through the course of 2023
I have since gone back to BOTW and played it a little more. While it's still a great game it feels much more restrictive than TOTK does and has way more annoying shrines than TOTK and I get really annoyed by the clunkier menu system

I'm about midway through Echoes of Wisdom and I would say it has a bit more in common with TOTK than with classic 2D Zelda. The emphasis is much more on creative problem-solving rather than the traditional lock-and-key structure. The possibilities for sequence-breaking are much wider. It also has in common with TOTK/BOTW the terrible endless scrolling item menu and the tedious cooking system. On the whole it's a pretty good time and if you've ever enjoyed a Zelda of any vintage, you'll probably like it.
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Wednesday, 2 October 2024 18:41 (seven months ago)
It's so fun! I adore the nods to A Link to the Past in the overworld.
Before they announced EoW, I was thinking how much I would enjoy a 2D LttP-style game in a world the size of BotW/TotK. This is better though.

They need to let you skip that blood moon cutscene. It’s both meaningless and annoying. You shouldn’t have to watch part of it, it’s the same thing every time! Give me the skip button at the start! Can you actually catch those little sprites that come from the cave frogs?I love the shrines so so so much. I have autobuild now and I hope I pick up a schematic for a horse cart at some stage cos not having one yet is extremely annoying. I don’t want to do those Korok tasks without one!
― gyac, Friday, 4 October 2024 14:42 (seven months ago)
IIRC you can press X then + during the blood moon cutscene to skip it
― c u (crüt), Friday, 4 October 2024 15:46 (seven months ago)
I have tried that but it still plays way too much before that comes in.Finding out how to turn off Sidon was the best day of my Hyrule life.
― gyac, Friday, 4 October 2024 15:52 (seven months ago)
yeah the blood moon cut scene is annoying; it should stop running after the idk 10th time
if you shoot those sprites they drop $$ but you can't literally catch them afaik
― rob, Friday, 4 October 2024 15:53 (seven months ago)
I’d eat a marble rock roast ngl
― gyac, Friday, 4 October 2024 17:55 (seven months ago)
I suspect the blood moon scene needs to play out because part of it's purpose is memory/cache flushing, saving, etc? I am only guessing this, but mainly bcs I know you can force a blood moon (seen it referred to as a 'panic moon') by doing shit that wigs out the game, so it does one as a sort of reset.

The easiest temple monster was the ice temple one where you’re up in the air. I loved falling back in slow motion shooting arrows at that fucker. I would have completed it the first time if I hadn’t been focusing so much on shooting the thing that I forgot to press glide before hitting the ground. Basically the ending of Aeon Flux short Gravity.
― gyac, Monday, 14 October 2024 11:54 (six months ago)
Things I have done since I last posted:- several shrines- rode an ice dragon for a while- acquired two more horses (one is the side quest horse Spot)Things I have not done:- upgrade my armour For whatever reason I decided to start the Call to the depths side quest. It started off fine; I found all four eyes easily and threw them into the chasms. Now to retrieve them.So I jumped into the last chasm & found the eye quickly. I knew roughly where I was supposed to be going and what I was looking for (a statue). So I got there without too much hassle, and looked. And looked. Made my way to the secret spring of recovery which seems like the kind of place you’d find a giant eyeless statue. I placed the statue on the side of the spring while I went swimming around. I got lost. Flashback to being a teenager and taking aptitude tests in school. My guidance counsellor: “Maybe you skipped over the page and filled in the wrong boxes?” No, I told her, I really am that bad. My Achilles heel popped up again. You might be wondering, why didn’t you look up the location of this statue? And reader, I had. I had the coordinates and I couldn’t find them. Not only could I not find them, when I made my way back to the spring the eye was gone. Who loses an eye? Did someone steal it or did the game simply move it back to where it was? I frantically searched for the missing eye, on land and in water, without realising one final indignity was about to befall me.I ran out of stamina in the secret spring of recovery and died. That doesn’t seem like something you should be able to do, but I did it. I hope my sleep is dreamless and i am not haunted by the missing eye 👁️

i'd love to read more about how BOTW/TOTK were designed. like, for example- (i think this would be a common experience for players): using a rocket to boost up to a cliff/pathway in the depths, I land exactly where i needed to go before running out of fuel. this sort of thing happens frequently, all over the place. another example would be paragliding and landing on a platform right where you need it to be before your stamina drains
were the pathways/platforms/etc at that height designed first, and the rocket/tools/abilities based around the need for the player to navigate these commonly traversed areas? or did they define the abilities of the rocket/glider/etc first and then design platforms/areas at a ‘rocketable/glideable’ distance ? …OR were the tools/powers and the landscape developed in tandem and adjusted throughout?
i hesitate to say the latter because in my mind that would create a nightmare of exponentially cascading adjustments affecting EVERYTHING in the game, since all the systems are so interconnected and used in so many varied ways. it seems a lot easier to set the parameters for link and the tools/powers first to more easily ensure consistency in the world construction, but that also doesn't leave as much room for creativity or craft, two elements that are clearly abound in the game
i guess what’s truly insane to me is that they *really* did have to develop everything with three dimensions in mind (or four, given the recall power). compared to most games which are 3D, sure, but you are operating largely on a ‘flat’ plane conceptually
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 17 October 2024 21:07 (six months ago)
Gosh I cant say I ever got that experience. I'd always just miss platforms in the sky or come up short on a cliff in the depths. Maybe it depends where you go, I dont know.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 17 October 2024 21:34 (six months ago)
i could see there being some rules in there that help you get places if youre close enough i know its a common practice in video games to sand off rough edges like that, kinda doubt distances between things are measured out in glide lengths since thats upgradable and buffable so it ends up being a ton of different lengths
― lag∞n, Thursday, 17 October 2024 21:43 (six months ago)
yeah a lot of the powers seem elastic, like ultrahand distance being (imo) longer in certain shrines for the sake of the puzzle

i’ve been failing at a supposed exploit where you use recall on a thrown board spear, ultrahand the spear midair and attach it to a plank of wood then use recall on the spear again- supposedly it launches you insanely high. maybe my reflexes arent quick enough, or its been patched out
getting more armor and armor upgrades as well- the set bonuses along with elixir/meal buffs will make for some cool stuff
― global tetrahedron, Friday, 18 October 2024 22:01 (six months ago)
I stopped following some of the reddits but I know bombing for speedruns was a thing at least in BOTW, not sureif it got patched in totk. I never really tried any exploits!
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 19 October 2024 00:31 (six months ago)
all that bomb glitching is prob why they eliminated the remote bombs from totk and just said, “you wanna fly so badly, then fly!”
― hott ogo (voodoo chili), Saturday, 19 October 2024 00:39 (six months ago)
the more i tried to do it i realized it was a glitch and got less interested, not into cheesing… the game gives you plenty of easy workarounds for basically any situation
i’ve been marking spots where there is a little parade of a boss bokoblin and 4-5 minons marching… great to test weapon platforms on, trying to perfect a bomber plane basically
also discovered a good fuse combo yesterday- cannon sword/spear… if you use the throw button you can target the cannon. before this i didnt find the cannon good for much except blowing myself up, even on a construct head
― global tetrahedron, Saturday, 19 October 2024 17:07 (six months ago)
I have been kind of just going around finding and completing shrines and caves and spending a lot of time in the depths. Also riding dragons and chipping various pieces of them off.
― gyac, Monday, 28 October 2024 11:02 (six months ago)
I would happily shoot and eat a million meadow animals but I always feel a little guilty about descaling a dragon.
I just started this again - last year I got as far as meeting Purah for the first time (i.e. not very far) and then had a break and forgot everything. Now I’ve restarted it from the beginning (just got to Purah again!) and enjoying it a lot more the second time around. I think I had elevated expectations last time – now I’m treating it more like a BOTW DLC. Before I reached Purah I tried building a lot of shit cars — that was fun. The game should play a sad trombone sound every time you start driving something that falls apart in the first second.

how much "main quest" material is left after the regional phenomena missions? i've got all the geoglyph tear things and just arrived in goron city, my last remaining region. i seem to remember things wrapping up pretty quickly after the divine beasts in BOTW
as a slight aside, the fanboy grouchiness i see over "inconsistent lore" while skimming discussions about TOTK is fascinating. points to nintendo for trying to add some character depth and development, but demanding a deep plot seems to miss the point of nintendo games
