I can't get it to work without fully opening up my PS2 to swap in and out the discs

the slide tool doesn't work AT ALL

A bizarre minor internal mishap caused the laser to knacker itself on my PS2 as a result, costing £45, but I reckon I've broken even, and it was a pretty rare thing.

previews are out on pro ev 5 and seems people are still bitching about the "crappy" commentary, music and menu design WTF those are all awesome! and as per what I said on another PES thread the commentary needs to get 'worse' not 'better'!!!

apparently the new PES is slower and has incorporated a randomness factor into the decision of who wins in 50-50s and where the balls spills to; increased refinement and improvment of the perennial "just hold X to press" problem, which they seem closer to solving with each iteration; new fancy moves; and more difficult than ever before...

OK I'm pretty excited; even had my first office conversation about it today...

plus it unites so many disparate people, each with their own fevered stories of goal-mouth success and weekend PES party excess, and each it seems with a appreciation and I guesss as silly as it sounds also a respect for the game...

PES is the only game I've bothered playing with other people in years. I am also "The Best" at it. Or at least the free kicks.

pro ev 4 seems to have pre-empted real life with players constantly doing the finger over lips "sssh" thing to the crowd, though I don't think "what are you doing you idiot" when someone does it in PES.

hope they've made the lobs more difficult

i'd like the defenders to be a bit more intelligent. surely Konami can rent some AI technology from the pentagon or somewhere.

oh, and i really am the best at PES4. not only can i beat all my friends, but i asked my mum and she said i was.

I am going to get pes 5, but I do hope that I have more time to properly devote to it this "season", I never quite got to any real level of skill with pes 4.

Also, it's harder to just keep the ball by changing by blithely changing direction at full pelt. This will probably make it harder for the people I play who like to just keep the ball until they can pass it to somebody on the six yard line and tap it in, which always irked me rather.

I am unintentionally committing a foul every four seconds.

I had a couple of 3-0 wins with England in friendlies to start with that lulled me into a false sense of security.

This is absolutely otm. It's like watching Liverpool. I have started picking Milan and Real Madrid to try and do better, but to no avail.

despite some unforgivable slowdown this thing is LOVELY

top tip in a line of top tips to come: change your long passing type to type 4... this means that inside the crossing box (tht area of the park where it normally auto-crosses if you press O) you still retain full (power-bar) control over long passes and so can better direct crosses... mmm lovely

I am getting into it now, I have to say, you can do some very fluid movements forward.

you can still use the ordinary crosses (O, Ox2, Ox3) by holding down L1 then pressing... this just gives you a nice other option, which is great for actually picking out players rather than relying on the randomness of the auto-cross

anyone down for some action if I get it going?

I think it's supposed to be easy enough to set up if you have a broadband connection already.

I just bought the network adaptor anyway - so we'll see how this goes

You can rewind time in the free training/practice match mode.

So for example if your cross gets cleared by a defender you rewind to the appropriate point and instead put a high cross into the back post. This point in time becomes 'bookmarked' so you can very easily rewind over and over experiment with all the different crosses - each time with the striker and defenders in the same position so you can judge the variations properly.

Similarly you are through on goal and blast your shot over - rewind and instead try an R2 side foot shot - rewind and try to chip the keeper.

You lose the ball - rewind until you have posession back.

Wonderful.

By the way you have to press R2 AFTER pressing the shoot button to do a side foot shot.

I had a little fiddle about with this feature a long time ago in PES4 but had completely forgotten about it... if I remember correctly it's kinda fiddly but v. useful for creating 'test conditions' where you can try difft. approaches over and over in the one situation

huh. i played my friend's version of pes5 on sunday night and noticed MANY differences almost immediately. the animation is much smoother.

At the moment AC Milan are my preferred team.

glorious when it all comes together... plus the best defenders in the game are immense: john terry is a legend

I would possibly have felt a bit more outraged if I didn't play as Villa all the time.

During an earlier 3-2 league victory over Chelsea in which John Terry scored an own goal, I found myself setting the replay camera to follow his unpleasant smug face, that I might watch the exact moment when realisation dawned that he had turned the ball hilariously into his own net. You know, like Ralph Wiggum's heart bursting.

ONLY TO FIND THE LINESMAN HAD RAISED THE OFFSIDE FLAG BUT HAD TO WAIT TILL THE END OF THE CELEBRATION!

I picked this (PS2) game up a few weeks ago for a fiver. I've never played any Pro Evolution games before, and I'm finding it very difficult. I scored my first goal yesterday, after realising that you can't just hammer balls at the goal at hope for the best, as was the case with the last football game I played which was probably FIFA 95 on the Megadrive. But the main difficulty I'm finding with the game is actually getting the ball off the other team. The possession in my last game was something like 58%-42% in the other team's favour. The just pass the ball between themselves, my players actually seem to be running away from the ball. Pretty much every sliding tackle results in a foul.

So basically my problem is this: how do I intercept passed balls, and if one of my players is next to an opposing player with the ball, how do I get it off him?

Any other advice is gratefully received!

This thread died off pretty quick after the game actually came out. Did everybody just decide 4 was actually better, or what happened?

probably better than 4 in retrospect, didn't like it as much at the time

4. PES5

I've been playing both 4 & 5 back to back this weekend (on PC) and feel like they both hold up quite well. 5 does seems a little slicker and the commentary seems a little more varied, but I think you can still play 4 online, while 5 has no more online as it depended on Konami servers(?). The quality of graphics on both is quite nice and the gameplay feels well balanced - though I'm no expert. Sometimes I think we discard these older games far too fast.

I'd definitely revise that list to take out PES5 and replace it w/FIFA 09. it's in no particular order, either. FIFA10 looks already (from the demo) to be a ton better than 09 so you could probably already confidently just slot that in there in its stead.

watching some videos of PES2 (PS1) on youtube, I forgot how comical the sound effects were; it's incredible how much smoother looking the gameplay is compared to the current PES build:

Didn't get FIFA 09. I think the last football game I bought was PES 2008. Definitely getting FIFA 10.

played 2010 on the PS3 over the weekend, and it's certainly much closer to the older games than 2009 on the PS2. heartened.

this game is an absolute masterpiece

I was playing ISS pro evolution (ps1) and thinking tht konami kinda hobbled themselves by getting it so perfect right out the gate. thought maybe they shd just re-skin tht game w/modern textures, animations and a database update plus add in the simpler refinements tht later iterations added in. but then I switched to PES5 and altho ISS pro still plays a great game of football it's nowhere near as fluid and deep as that offered by PES5. just the many ways you can take the ball in this sets it head and shoulders above everything thts come since and before. why they removed so much of the intricacies of its first touch system from later iterations iunno

just wait till next year! But seriously, I haven't tried 2010 on Wii, but have never been able to get into the pointer controls as much as I thought I would. On the Wii, it's an interesting concept, but I just feel like there's TOO MUCH to control. I honestly think it's a lot more fun just to play with standard joystick controls. Passing is better with the pointer, but everything else is over complicated. The learning curve will break your heart.

I love PES on Wii, but haven't played 201o. 2009 is so good that I haven't bothered with the new one yet - I just haven't seen anything that tells me there is enough of an improvement in 9 months to justify a purchase. I'm not spending $50 for slightly better set pieces.

There is definitely a learning curve but I love controlling my whole team, not just one guy at a time. It's really hard to switch back and hope your AI teammates are in the place you want them as opposed to making them run to receive the perfect cross.

i might buy 5. I got into football games really late (well I played them when i was a wee guy until International Superstar Soccer Deluxe and then didn't get back into them properly until 6) and 6 is so much better than all the iterations that have followed so my mind tells me it's good.

i got the use of an xbox one and bought 2018 for master league jollies, and at the end of season one all my money disappeared.

i did not react well. havent turned it on since. must go back for another effort

2020 has no idea at all what a foul is, and your defenders frequently casually jog away from through balls while the game refuses to let you switch to them, but I still can't stop playing it

that second flaw has always been a feature

Player switching was def better in 5 than it is now

picked up PES 2020 for £6 in the latest PSN sale. enjoying it but sgt biscuits otm - the foul system is pish

some other gripes:

- no idea why they needlessly changed the controls for moves which have been in the series from the year dot

- giving away a free kick outside your box is as bad as giving away a pen
