cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

DOWNLOAD PC-DEMO NOW!

Except I can't, as I'm at work.

this is going to be so good

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to know some more stuff about the team that develops pro evo year in year out...

is it the same core team? or is it within the larger framework of konami? &c.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

They should maybe have an address we could send money and thankyou cards and drawings of them and stuff to.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I have this image of some secret cabal working away in a rigged cave somewhere, feverishly attending to pro evo X with nothing but the joy of pure PERFECTION as their ultimate reward

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

what's the exact release date, I swear I am tempted to take a few days off work and organise friends to do the same.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

21st of October. Though it's already available through torrent if your PS2 is capable of playing *those* kind of games.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

oh sweet I'm off that weekend anyhow

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm working 7:30am-3:30pm over that weekend. Still, gives me all afternoon to ignore any sunshine and hide away with PES5.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I have a contact who said he'll make it available on the 20th for me!

: )

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

shit I don't have a DVD writer or I'd dl the torrent

: /

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

While we're on that, does anybody know of a reliable place in the UK I could get a Swap Magic disc from? My one is knackered.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I ordered mine from memtechsolutionsltd. Got here today, so I may get PES5 tomorrow... Who can wait 2weeks!?

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

The Swap Magic that is...

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Ah, have they got a website?

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh. It's exactly what you'd think it is. £14.99 is good!

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

hey ferg have you used SM before?

I can't get it to work without fully opening up my PS2 to swap in and out the discs

the slide tool doesn't work AT ALL

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I installed a flip-top lid because everything I saw that mentioned the slide-card method said it was Bad and Dangerous.

A bizarre minor internal mishap caused the laser to knacker itself on my PS2 as a result, costing £45, but I reckon I've broken even, and it was a pretty rare thing.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

where did you get a flip-top lid?

previews are out on pro ev 5 and seems people are still bitching about the "crappy" commentary, music and menu design WTF those are all awesome! and as per what I said on another PES thread the commentary needs to get 'worse' not 'better'!!!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

My PS2's pretty old and knackered anyway, if SM kills it, I'll have a good excuse to buy a slim one, and the fancy flip-top SM doober for it too.

They do the flip top lids on the site i mentioned above .co.uk

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I think I got mine from White Dog , but I think they stopped selling them when Sony won that Mod Chip court case - http://www.memtechsolutions.net has them pretty cheap though.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

sorry to bog down the thread with this but how do I know if I need the V.9 or V4-7 lid?

: /

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

crap commentary is essential.

I demand the return of the sudden and rare "SHOTOFAMASTER", plus the continued genius of "they'll be cracking open the cigars now"

"yes peter they'll be cracking open the cigars now"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

except I would like if every player then smoked a cigar for the duration of the game

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I figured it out

anyway

apparently the new PES is slower and has incorporated a randomness factor into the decision of who wins in 50-50s and where the balls spills to; increased refinement and improvment of the perennial "just hold X to press" problem, which they seem closer to solving with each iteration; new fancy moves; and more difficult than ever before...

OK I'm pretty excited; even had my first office conversation about it today...

beers round mine?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

"OFFJURY TIME"

"it's a BIIIIIIIIIG kick"

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Cozen, I think it depends on the number of screws on the base of your PS2? I'll have a look for the installation guide I used.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Aha.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

it's a BIIIIIIIIIG kick

That was legendary.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

the thing I like a lot about PES is that it's completely social, where a large part of playing video-games for me is utterly solitary and lonely...

plus it unites so many disparate people, each with their own fevered stories of goal-mouth success and weekend PES party excess, and each it seems with a appreciation and I guesss as silly as it sounds also a respect for the game...

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

also I am the best at it

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

That's why I love PES. EVERYONE thinks they're the best at it, me, you, each of the guys at work. They're all "the best".

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah I think you're right

except I am the best

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

: )

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Just wait til ONLINE PES5!! That'll sort the men from the boys. Everyone who says they're the best, prove it. Now they need to incorporate playing for money...

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

This new one is Internetty, hm? I might get an online adaptor for that.

PES is the only game I've bothered playing with other people in years. I am also "The Best" at it. Or at least the free kicks.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

another SNES highlight, a cross comes in, you run with your defender to intercept it and end up facing your own goal, but.......why won't he stop, he's stuck running and can't turn, suddenly the already poorly realised crowd noises changes to a horrible high pitched static hissing.............

the commentator can barely believe that something so horrible, so sick could actually happen.

"OH NO!!???!!??! OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWN GOAL??!!?!!?"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

They've made the free-kicks easier in 5 too. So it'll be more like 3 was, where you could score 9/10.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I SCORE 10/10

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

"Good header. GOOD header. Good header. GOOD header."

Sort of reminded me of that "John Fashanu" thing on The Day Today.

F (Ferg), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

As long as they don't change the commentary where you're 5-0 up in the first half, then the keeper saves 2 shots in a row:
"They must be wondering how to beat him!"

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

bring back Trevor Brooking's vaguely sexual groaning from PES3! "ugggggghnnnmmmm"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

And on that subject, less/more humping in the goal celebrations...?

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

oh more. less up short camera shots though.

pro ev 4 seems to have pre-empted real life with players constantly doing the finger over lips "sssh" thing to the crowd, though I don't think "what are you doing you idiot" when someone does it in PES.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I hope they move Michael Owen's teeth closer together. Scary fucker.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

more goals IN YOUR FACE

hope they've made the lobs more difficult

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

"oh yeah I've got an idea why don't you lob it? yeah! GOOD ONE!"

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

i think the holy grail of football games is making one where there isn't a shot/attack you can try that will almost certainly come off. the lob/chip over the keeper is the most obvious in PES4.

i'd like the defenders to be a bit more intelligent. surely Konami can rent some AI technology from the pentagon or somewhere.

oh, and i really am the best at PES4. not only can i beat all my friends, but i asked my mum and she said i was.

Lee F# (fsharp), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

HMV have it listed at £15 with free delivery

?!

I just bought one

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

got an e-mail from them saying that the item was mispriced but as a gesture of goodwill they are going to honour the contract...

score!

Good work Cozen!

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 7 October 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I felt like a fly learning how to bark

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 8 October 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

(oh sorry, I've played it and I suck at it reeeeeallll bad)

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 8 October 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

I CANT WAIT TO PLAY PES5. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER SINCE I WAS A LITTLE KID AND I AM STILL 14 BUT I CAN BEAT EVERYBODY AND U WILL SEE WHEN ONLINE PES5 COMES OUT.

PRO EVOLUTION IS THE BEST SOCCER GAME EVER BETTER THAN THAT CRAPPY GAME FIFA

feras siala, Sunday, 9 October 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

god bless you

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 October 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

What czn said abt it. I am getting better but dribbling is not really an option.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

cozen we need to know MORE

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

I only played it for a few hours... to be honest I didn't like but as ronan and I agreed that's the pattern with all new pro evs... you're so comfortable in the old one that the shock of the new is always a bit disappointing... like they've somehow managed to fuck it up (oh no!!)... I was having a lot of problems maintaining possession in this one and having a lot of trouble actually getting my players to move the ways and directions I wanted them too... but that's because I was pedal-to-the-R1 constantly... when I let go of R1 and started only using it sparingly, for burts down the wing, or R2 dribbling in the centre of the park I was having a lot more success... as I think I said above successive pro evs feel like the team are finding new ways to refine their old problems... notably the ease and ubiquity of both hold-X-to-press (which they've progressively stamped out... I remember playing pro ev 4 and thinking god it's so ineffective now but really by the end of PES4's life it was possible to shut out the game completely using X + square properly...) and also the the hold-R1-ALL-the time problem... which, see above, they've put some work into...

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

it still looks the same, which was a bit of a disappointment but I guess konami feel that they've achieved a level of graphical comfort that they're happy with and now they can concentrate FULLY on tweaking other aspects... no hideous commentary that I noticed... and the menus and music are awful YAY

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

and plus it's ALMOST HERE

(... and so is shadow of the colossus and the warriors, incidentally... the PS2 has had a great later life)

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

(I am hanging out for shadow of the colossus so bad.)

I am going to get pes 5, but I do hope that I have more time to properly devote to it this "season", I never quite got to any real level of skill with pes 4.

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 16 October 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

TWO DAYS!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm liking what I've played on the demo so far, even if it does take getting used to. It feels a bit more fluid, the goals I've scored have been less dependent on the through ball/one on one with keeper pattern.

Also, it's harder to just keep the ball by changing by blithely changing direction at full pelt. This will probably make it harder for the people I play who like to just keep the ball until they can pass it to somebody on the six yard line and tap it in, which always irked me rather.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Friday, 21 October 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

yo order has been DESPATCHED

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

I scored the first free kick I got, with N Solano.

I am unintentionally committing a foul every four seconds.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Friday, 21 October 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

i had 28 fouls in one five minute game without a single yellow card. I don't think they want you to tackle people or press or be in their vicinity.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 21 October 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

it's fucking hard

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 October 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

yo order has not been DELIVERED

I like how all the posts by people who now have it are just duck-in duck-outs...

c7n (Cozen), Saturday, 22 October 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

haha. there's a vague anticlimax with a new PES, always!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 October 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

I actually think I was enjoying 4 most in the last month or two!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 October 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

It's weirdly intense playing this, I find myself hunched over the controller with a furrowed brow, desperate to get a touch of the ball, then I'll get it in an attacking position, sidestep one defender then panic, run out of ideas and get shunted off the ball.

I had a couple of 3-0 wins with England in friendlies to start with that lulled me into a false sense of security.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Saturday, 22 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I STILL haven't had much chance to play it. I've played one match, which I won 2-0 with 2 identical diving headers. But tonight, after work, I have 17.5hours til I'm next at work, so I reckon at least 10 of those can be spent on Pro Evo (less eating time etc). I'll be the best again in no time.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Saturday, 22 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

it's so hard it almost feels like starting again.

rio natsume, Saturday, 22 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I have resigned myself to playing it on 2 stars, 6-0 victory's are now the norm but whenever i decide to try an exhibition on 3 again movement of any kind becomes pretty much impossible. On 2 stars tho i seem to be getting the hang of dribbling which is all about being much slower and thinking about every slight movement to beat people rather than just hammering past them, it's pretty hellish but you really feel like you earned it.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 22 October 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Just found out we're having a work "Pro Evo Tournament" on the 11th of November. Sounds like it should be enough time to practice PES5, but we'll be playing BOTH PES4&5! That's gonna be confusing as hell.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Saturday, 22 October 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

This is absolutely otm. It's like watching Liverpool. I have started picking Milan and Real Madrid to try and do better, but to no avail.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

why did they ruin my baby so?

haha just kidding but I'm still rubbish

c7n (Cozen), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

"footballing simulator"

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 24 October 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

PES5 (PS2) >>>>>>>>> PES5 (x-box)

despite some unforgivable slowdown this thing is LOVELY

top tip in a line of top tips to come: change your long passing type to type 4... this means that inside the crossing box (tht area of the park where it normally auto-crosses if you press O) you still retain full (power-bar) control over long passes and so can better direct crosses... mmm lovely

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 24 October 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

where do you change that setting?

I am getting into it now, I have to say, you can do some very fluid movements forward.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 October 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

button configuration

you can still use the ordinary crosses (O, Ox2, Ox3) by holding down L1 then pressing... this just gives you a nice other option, which is great for actually picking out players rather than relying on the randomness of the auto-cross

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 24 October 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

if I buy a network adapter for my PS2 can I just plug and play PES5 online?

anyone down for some action if I get it going?

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

I am tempted to buy one too, if I do then yes.

I think it's supposed to be easy enough to set up if you have a broadband connection already.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't you need to pay a Sony online subsription, like with XBox Live?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

my problem is my broadband setup at home is wireless and very temperamental

I just bought the network adaptor anyway - so we'll see how this goes

I'll report back

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

"With the purchase of a separate unit called the Network Adaptor (which is built into the newest system revision), some PS2 games support online multiplayer. Instead of having a unified, subscription-based online service like Xbox Live, online multiplayer on the PS2 is free, but split between publishers."

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I feel the need to draw attention to a feature of the PES games that's probably not been discovered by most people.

You can rewind time in the free training/practice match mode.

So for example if your cross gets cleared by a defender you rewind to the appropriate point and instead put a high cross into the back post. This point in time becomes 'bookmarked' so you can very easily rewind over and over experiment with all the different crosses - each time with the striker and defenders in the same position so you can judge the variations properly.

Similarly you are through on goal and blast your shot over - rewind and instead try an R2 side foot shot - rewind and try to chip the keeper.

You lose the ball - rewind until you have posession back.

Wonderful.

By the way you have to press R2 AFTER pressing the shoot button to do a side foot shot.

Offensive? Unsuitable? Report this comment.

I had a little fiddle about with this feature a long time ago in PES4 but had completely forgotten about it... if I remember correctly it's kinda fiddly but v. useful for creating 'test conditions' where you can try difft. approaches over and over in the one situation

c7n (Cozen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Training mode? People use this?
Maybe this explains why I'm not very good.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

particularly stupid-headed guardian review

c7n (Cozen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Fortunately the more you play the more innovations you will spot, which is just as well as the game is superficially identical to its predecessor.

huh. i played my friend's version of pes5 on sunday night and noticed MANY differences almost immediately. the animation is much smoother.

foxy boxer (stevie), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

The surprisingly widespread view that PES5 is almost identical to PES4 is base idiocy.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah have these people never played PES4, have they never played it every day for a whole year? fools.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

haha!

c7n (Cozen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

This game is incredible. It's really started clicking, especially in two player, the neat passing, the long build ups for goals. It's magical. You only get two or three great chances a game, and you must make them count!

At the moment AC Milan are my preferred team.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I hope it'll click for me. I'm still stuck on two difficulty and any time i try on three or four i always end up with a 0-0 draw. My biggest problem is that running/dribbling used to be the strongest aspect of my game and now i am absolutely useless at it, i can still pass well. I have pretty much given up for football manager 2006 anyway.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

ronan otm... this is pretty much the best PES ever

glorious when it all comes together... plus the best defenders in the game are immense: john terry is a legend

still playing with arsenal as my team

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

hello, my name is ramirete.

i`have the pes5 but i dont found a page where i can play this perfect game in the internet...so i need help, if someone know where i can play it, please send me a e-mail!

thanks!

ramirete, Monday, 31 October 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I always had this steady sense of incremental improvement, but having had my first multiplayer session at the weekend I came back and beat Blackburn 4-0 away in the Master League and subsequently went on a run of beating the top clubs. So yeah it's kind of Clicked, but I was sort of bizarrely enjoying the 0-0 drudges in a weird masochistic kind of way just because they felt real.

I would possibly have felt a bit more outraged if I didn't play as Villa all the time.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

two words: pro evolution soccer management.

rio natsume, Friday, 4 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

ding dong battle

rio natsume, Friday, 4 November 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Earlier I beat Chelsea 4-1 in the D1 Cup Final in Master League, scoring a first half hat-trick with noted complete donkey JP Angel. Those red condition arrows make a reeeeal difference.

During an earlier 3-2 league victory over Chelsea in which John Terry scored an own goal, I found myself setting the replay camera to follow his unpleasant smug face, that I might watch the exact moment when realisation dawned that he had turned the ball hilariously into his own net. You know, like Ralph Wiggum's heart bursting.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Saturday, 5 November 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I had a humorous moment last night with Portugal. After a goalmouth scramble which followed a corner, Cristiano Ronaldo eventually managed to bundle the ball into the net. However as he attempted to run off to celebrate he became entangled in the net and began writhing back and forth. This went on for a while, and then he eventually broke free and ran off celebrating............

ONLY TO FIND THE LINESMAN HAD RAISED THE OFFSIDE FLAG BUT HAD TO WAIT TILL THE END OF THE CELEBRATION!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 6 November 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

that is fantastic.

I have finally purloined a copy. should I pack up the ps2 and take it to work tomorrow?

pretentiosexual rights activist (haitch), Monday, 7 November 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

you know, just "a quick game over lunch".

geez gettin the game was one helluva headache(spent my allowance on my girlfriends birthday, so couldnt afford it.. had to download it!!!)...my broadbands majorly temperamental off late, only works(that too, miserably) so i sat up ALL NIGHT reconnecting to bittorrent every half an hour!! Geez i wanted it so bad!! as somebody said, it IS like starting all over again.. u cant just tear up ur opposition like PES4, but its good.. more challenging..I was amazing at 6-star wid PES4, but had to go down to 2-star for a while.. a lot of 4-0, 5-0 victories gone, n im ready for 3-star.. THIS IS AN AMAZING GAME!! they've done a great job with the subtle tweaks in graphics.. wish i didnt have so much to study for engineering, only get time after midnight!!! oh.. if anybody's up for a lil one on one, email me, n we can fix up sometime..
cheers!

Azeem the Great, Monday, 7 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

oh, and if anybody thinks this is game is, what was it? 'superficially reminiscent to its predecessor'.. dont believe that for an instant.. this is a whole new deal.. much more fluid, more realistic(didnt think that could be possible after PES-4, but proven wrong by technological advances again!) its an absolutely brilliant game, that has all of PES-4 and MUCH MUCH MUCH more to offer.. i only wish the ref was a bit less trigger happy and allowed a bit of physiccally, but watever, they'll come out wid a tweak for that sooner or later.. advantage of havin the PC version!

azeem the great, Monday, 7 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

im starting to get the hang of 3-star now.. basically u need a more measured approach and a helluva lot of patience...managed to beat chelsea 2-0 wid Man United..i really cant understand why they bothered adding AI to the players team in this game, coz you keep having to 'super cancel' every single attacking run it makes..long passing mode 4 in button config makes it a tad more convenient, so i'd advise that

azeem the great, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

good god this is hard. how do people with no prior PES experience go when they come to the game for the first time??

pretentiosexual rights activist (haitch), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

thought I was getting a handle on it. thought wrong! sliced apart... by BELGIUM!

pretentiosexual rights activist (haitch), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah I keep having false dawns. I still think this game is nothing in one player compared to two player, like the difference is vast, just far more open games in two player, the computer can time tackles and things in a way no human ever could!

Have we got an FAQ for complete names of players / teams / stadiums etcetera so I can re-name all the ones I give a shit about? It just arrived...

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

It's taken nearly three weeks but I am getting to grips with this now. Second in Liga Espana with Barcelona. Still not scoring enough goals, but my defence is tight. The goals I have got have included some crackers - a 35-yard drive by Ronaldhinho after the opposition forward lost possession straight from their kick-off (right after they'd conceded a goal, not to start a half), a few free-kicks with Henry when I played as Arsenal and now with Deco at Barca. It's hard but I'm getting there. It requires Zen football.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Ronan is OTM abt difficulty of computer defenders. It honestly seems like they have some sort of preternatural knowledge abt every footstep i am going to make. I miss being able to dribble but a much slower passing play style is still fun, i am just scoring a lot less.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

I picked this (PS2) game up a few weeks ago for a fiver. I've never played any Pro Evolution games before, and I'm finding it very difficult. I scored my first goal yesterday, after realising that you can't just hammer balls at the goal at hope for the best, as was the case with the last football game I played which was probably FIFA 95 on the Megadrive. But the main difficulty I'm finding with the game is actually getting the ball off the other team. The possession in my last game was something like 58%-42% in the other team's favour. The just pass the ball between themselves, my players actually seem to be running away from the ball. Pretty much every sliding tackle results in a foul.

So basically my problem is this: how do I intercept passed balls, and if one of my players is next to an opposing player with the ball, how do I get it off him?

Any other advice is gratefully received!

two years pass...

This thread died off pretty quick after the game actually came out. Did everybody just decide 4 was actually better, or what happened?

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 26 September 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

probably better than 4 in retrospect, didn't like it as much at the time

cozwn, Saturday, 26 September 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

haha, just read my old posts, OK seems I did like it at the time; I don't remember liking it as much

cozwn, Saturday, 26 September 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

Cozwn - I also remember you posting this less than a year ago...

my all-time top 10:

1. PES2 (PS1)
2. PES4 (PS2)
3. SWOS
4. PES5

I've been playing both 4 & 5 back to back this weekend (on PC) and feel like they both hold up quite well. 5 does seems a little slicker and the commentary seems a little more varied, but I think you can still play 4 online, while 5 has no more online as it depended on Konami servers(?). The quality of graphics on both is quite nice and the gameplay feels well balanced - though I'm no expert. Sometimes I think we discard these older games far too fast.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 27 September 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

I'd definitely revise that list to take out PES5 and replace it w/FIFA 09. it's in no particular order, either. FIFA10 looks already (from the demo) to be a ton better than 09 so you could probably already confidently just slot that in there in its stead.

cozwn, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

watching some videos of PES2 (PS1) on youtube, I forgot how comical the sound effects were; it's incredible how much smoother looking the gameplay is compared to the current PES build:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAppC0H8BBc
we used to play loads of this game even long after PES had moved onto 4 and 5

cozwn, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

can i get a decent new football game on PS2, does anybody know?

PES2009 is probably alright isn't it? wdn't touch FIFA on PS2 w/yours

cozwn, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, PES2010 (assuming it's being released on PS2)

cozwn, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

PES 2009 I have, and I have grave concerns about paying money for a sequel, assuming they will use the same game design, or indeed employees.

buy a ps3 then u ninny and then you can also easily justify it to your 28 yo self/sig other as a 'media hub'/blu ray machine not a 'console' . blu rays are sold in tesco now. plus u don't need broadband u maddie but why don't u have broadband anyway? are you posting from 2001?

Did Atkins Die Yet (onimo), Monday, 28 September 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

that video confused me a bit, not sure if i ever played that version. i will say though that ISS Pro Evolution on PS1 might be the best game of all time

sonderangerbot, Monday, 28 September 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

I get that one mixed up with the ISS Pro that came before the "Evolution" tag. Anyway, one of them is responsible for an OMG That Is Just Beautiful moment of through ball revelation (or evolution...).

played 2010 on the PS3 over the weekend, and it's certainly much closer to the older games than 2009 on the PS2. heartened.

Louis Cll (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

this game is an absolute masterpiece

I was playing ISS pro evolution (ps1) and thinking tht konami kinda hobbled themselves by getting it so perfect right out the gate. thought maybe they shd just re-skin tht game w/modern textures, animations and a database update plus add in the simpler refinements tht later iterations added in. but then I switched to PES5 and altho ISS pro still plays a great game of football it's nowhere near as fluid and deep as that offered by PES5. just the many ways you can take the ball in this sets it head and shoulders above everything thts come since and before. why they removed so much of the intricacies of its first touch system from later iterations iunno

not saying they werent but apparently this year's is the apotheosis

conezy (cozwn), Friday, 11 December 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

just wait till next year! But seriously, I haven't tried 2010 on Wii, but have never been able to get into the pointer controls as much as I thought I would. On the Wii, it's an interesting concept, but I just feel like there's TOO MUCH to control. I honestly think it's a lot more fun just to play with standard joystick controls. Passing is better with the pointer, but everything else is over complicated. The learning curve will break your heart.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

I love PES on Wii, but haven't played 201o. 2009 is so good that I haven't bothered with the new one yet - I just haven't seen anything that tells me there is enough of an improvement in 9 months to justify a purchase. I'm not spending $50 for slightly better set pieces.

There is definitely a learning curve but I love controlling my whole team, not just one guy at a time. It's really hard to switch back and hope your AI teammates are in the place you want them as opposed to making them run to receive the perfect cross.

yeah 5 or before tbh

dumb mick name follows (darraghmac), Thursday, 21 January 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

i might buy 5. I got into football games really late (well I played them when i was a wee guy until International Superstar Soccer Deluxe and then didn't get back into them properly until 6) and 6 is so much better than all the iterations that have followed so my mind tells me it's good.

Isambard Kingdom Buñuel (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

do people still play 5 on live though? that's the question.

Isambard Kingdom Buñuel (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

come september, when get broadband i can connect to, i'd buy 5 to play online if that option's even available on 5?

but a ps3 with 2010 is the preferred option
