Just some friendly rivalry for those DS guys...

So what games are worthwhile? I only have Wipeout and Lumines, and have pretty much played both of them out.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Virtua Tennis comes out tomorrow.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Does everyone who has a PSP only have Wipeout and Lumines? I'm thinking about getting Hot Shots Golf, too-- any other opinions as we while away our time until GTA and Sims 2 come out?

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Everyone raves about the tennis but the last sports game I cared about was Kick Off. I thought about that Mercury puzzle game. Er... that's it. Early days I guess.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I got one but I've only been playing NES roms on it, esp. Earthbound Zero. Isn't that INTENSE!?

Allen E. Riley (allenriley), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

ALLEN I JUST GOT A (FREE) PSP. WOWOWOW

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

What to get??

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Haha that's what you get for calling it the new Game Gear.

The first thing you're going to want is the 1.5 firmware downgrader.

http://www.psphacks.net/content/view/378/2/

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I heard it can be bricked by that....

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh I see, is this the Game Gear haterz thread?

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Jon Jon I want to play Lumines!!!

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Downgrader works. Playing Gunstar Heroes RIGHT NOW.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

fuck firmware 2.01

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

The only problem with the NES emu is Sony's awful, segmented control pad.

allenalenelnalenelnae (allenriley), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

The SNES emu can be slow without frameskip--this has been a big problem with S Mario Allstars. Genesis emulator works pretty good. I haven't messed with the Neo Geo one yet.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Fuck frameskip :(

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Lumines ruined me

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

is it good?

is meteos its sister?

anyone played meteos?

I'm not big on puzzle games but I just might

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Nethack on PSP? Oh you are kidding... It seems so wrong! And yet so right.

Lumines is great - if you like falling block games. It's got some top choons. But when you get good, games last 3 hours plus.

HOW DO I LOOK AT PORN VIDEOS

allenalenelnalenelnae (allenriley), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

there will be a psp version of pro evo 5. I am thinking of buying a psp just for this.

haitch (haitch), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
From the thread I shouldn't have started:

Filling my 4 year old son with e-numbers finally paid off. Today he won me (well, us, I suppose) a Sony PSP!

I can't find a PSP thread on ILG so here's where you tell me what games I *need* to buy for me and throw in one or two suggestions for what the kids might like.

Oh, and any general battery, accessory, etc. advice would be nice too.

What's out there that would suit a 4 and a 6 year old? They like superhero games, 3d platformers and movie tie-ins (most of their games are a combination of the three).

Is THUG 2 Remix any good?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't think there's anything good yet on the PSP?

gta: liberty city stories is out this week tho apparently

or at least CA games, in decourcy's arcade, say they'll have it in

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm so umming and ahhing about purchasing one today. I'll only play GTA on it ever, so £200 is a lot for one game.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Seems to be a load racing games and not much else.
I'll rent Wipeout Pure, Burnout Legends, Ridge Racer and Metal Gear Acid to see what they're like.
I don't think my wife would let the kids play GTA.
X-Men Legends II looks ok.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait. The Metal Gear thing is a turn based card game! WTF?!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

ouch

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

so glad I didn't get that.

jdubz (ex machina), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, this readers comment was enough to put me right off MGSacid:

"But by far the best part of MGA and the PSP is that when you use certain cards like Olga gurlukovich or Vamp, you get a cut scene from MGS2.."

and then they waffle on about how this somehow proves that the PSP is superior to the DS. what a chump.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Get Lumines and then get Loco Roco when it comes out.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

any verdict on gta: liberty city stories?

any good rpgs yet?

Jdubz (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm really enjoying Liberty City Stories. I haven't read any positive reviews of any RPGs yet but all the forthcoming ones look like anime crap except this, developed by Nippon Ichi and a large part of why I got a PSP in the first place.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

for some reason when i play psp i want to bite into hard and break it. this isn't a bad thing, really, but it is somehow in response to the frustration i feel when i see my fingerprints smudged all over.

allen riley (allenriley), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I need a less stressful game... seriously!

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Legend Of Heroes looks typical

TOMBOT, Monday, 5 December 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm so over my PSP. Anyone want to buy?

adam (adam), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Give it a few months, Adam! Solidarity!
(And get Hot Shots Golf if you don't already have it.)

antexit (antexit), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha I just got back from picking up my marked-up Craigslist Xbox 360. In the snow. Now I gotta sell the PSP or else I'm eating ramen once I get back to New Orleans. (nb I paid xxx-tra vs waiting because reports from NOLA = no Xboxes to be found anywhere for any price--I suspect the retail supply chain is still ganked up down there).

adam (adam), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Shin Megami Tensei's supposed to be pretty good.

IN UR BASE KILLING ALL UR DUDES (Adrian Langston), Monday, 5 December 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, that does look cool. But PSP is region locked, no?

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Monday, 5 December 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

sleep (sleep), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Games for the PSP are currently being encoded as region-free, and an official Sony statement [10] states that this will continue indefinitely. There will be no limitation as to which country's handheld can play which country's version of the game. This follows the lead that Nintendo started with their GameBoy line, leaving open the "portability" of the handheld, as well as enabling gamers who want to buy a PSP game while visiting another country will still be able to play it on their native PSP's.

Ok. Any word on awesome JP only games?

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 23 December 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

BUBBLE BOBBLE FOR PSP. WE WIN.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Not so fast, Jon.

This would be way better on a DS with touchscreen/stylus. Plus there is a Rainbow Islands Revolution out for DS in Japan and Europe too!

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 5 January 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

I was just thinking the other day that the world needs a WIDESCREEN bubble bobble with loading screens between every stage. Yes.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 5 January 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

The only game I've encountered with bad loading problems is Sims 2.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 6 January 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

This would be way better on a DS with touchscreen/stylus.

This makes no sense.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 6 January 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

You don't think bubbling up by touching the screen, and bubbling up across screens, would be cool? It would.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 6 January 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

No. It wouldn't.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 6 January 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

god the loading screens, the loading screens!!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

i don't understand how bubble bobble would benefit from touch screen, nor do i see any reason to include loading screens. why not just play it on mame then?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

You're all crazy if you don't think double screen bubble bobble would be cool. I don't even know if the game is designed this way, but I'd like to control the character with the stylus and bubble by tapping, because I find bubbling with buttons to be inexact and frustrating, at least on the NES version. I don't really see why loading screens would be necessary, either.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I will only be interested in Bubble Bobble when they release it as a turn-based tactical RPG.

TOMBOT, Friday, 6 January 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

haha

it would be good if you could burst the bubbles by tapping on them.

animal crossing has given me new respect for the character-control potential of the stylus.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, what Bubble Bobble needs most is a variety of overblown "bubble magic" attacks. I'd rather see it as a some sort of Kid Icarus/Metroid style platform puzzle game.

xpost

What special stuff can you do with the stylus in Animal Crossing?

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Laura is so OTM with the touch screen bubble thing, and s1ocki with the popping. Not implementing these would be as silly as releasing Lemmings for the handheld that doesn't have a touchscreen (wtf?).

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

there's nothing particularly special you can do with the stylus in AC, but i've taken to using it pretty much exclusively to control my little buddy and it's pretty satisfying.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

There's nothing I want more than to have to rapidly switch between using the A and B buttons and the stylus.

Laura, if you READ what I wrote I didn't diss 2 screen Bubble Bobble, but the idea of using a stylus to play.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

You're not the only person on this thread, Jon. If you READ what I wrote, you'd notice that particular post was addressed to "you all."

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the idea behind me liking the stylus was using tapping as a substitute for the buttons, as I clearly indicated, so I don't know why someone would be switching between the two.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

I guess that would work since it is possible to hold a DS in one hand, but I don't know if it would be good.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

PS- this is a PSP thread so go talk about your kids' games elsewhere!

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Prior to E3, Famitsu readers were interested in the PS3, and Final Fantasy. Post E3, while there's still some excitement over Final Fantasy, they seem to be very interested in the Wii, and concerned about the PS3's high price. It certainly seems that in Japan, at least, Nintendo and Sony's fortunes have reversed. Will this hold through the launch and the succeeding years?" From the article: "Nearly 70% of readers said they are most looking forward to Wii. 21% voted for PlayStation 3, while the others voted for systems already released. 88.4% of readers believe PlayStation 3 is too expensive, while 10% believe it's 'about right'."

New online store that lets you download "official" games and other stuff to your computer then to your psp. I'd imagine having this stuff on a memory card instead of umd will solve the load times problem? Only two psp games in the US store as of this post (I'd imagine more must be coming?) - ten or so ps1 games already though...

I just got a PSP so's to make my current lifestyle of airplane hell somewhat more bearable. My old reflexes would prefer easy puzzle-style fun rather than twitchy shooting and whatnot. Any recommendations?

Crush looks pretty cool.

libcrypt, Saturday, 8 March 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

There's a Lumines II but I haven't bought it because the main new thing (apart from new music and themes) seemed to be battle modes and I don't have anyone to play against.

Archer Maclean's Mercury is twitchy puzzle fun which I find addictive but infuriating, though it might just be that I'm not very good at that sort of thing. It's probably my favourite PSP game so far, but I hardly have any. In fact, I could use some similarly puzzly recommendations too.

(looks guiltily at unplayed Sid Meier's Pirates on PSP game shelf)

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 9 March 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

I got Loco Roco. It's very cute, but the lack of precision in the controls ain't so great. So far, my fave has been Atomic Punk Bomberman, which I played a lot in 1992-3 or so as an arcade game.

Does anyone still have one of these? I just won one, with Madden included, and I'm wondering if there are any games worth getting. God of War maybe?

antexit, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

Sure. God of War is pretty much the most technically impressive psp game I've played. Of late, I mostly pull out the psp for some N+, the Gradius Collection, or Star Soldier (which plays in TATE!). The various Capcom and SNK collections are good values if you want to play a bunch of old games on the go. I also enjoyed Echochrome quite a bit (you can download it from the psp pc store for around ten dollars). WipEout and Hot Shots Golf also got lots of play (both downloadable from the store too). Finally, can't forget Mega Man Powered-Up - I need to play that more, actually.

My brother got one yesterday, so I got him the Namco arcade, LocoRoco, the dual Castlevania one, and WipeOut Pure. All used, all better value. We'll see when one he likes.

And I think Level-5 has been making RPGs for this for a while now. They haven't put out a proper PS2/PS3 one since Rogue Galaxy.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Friday, 26 December 2008 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

there's a bunch of quality games up on the ps store too

smooth challoperator (cozwn), Friday, 26 December 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

aa - not sure what you mean by "time/longevity"

The first thing I would recommend is buying a decent sized memory card (if one didn't come with it). More and more psp games are available as direct downloads, and it's cool to have a nice selection of games stored on there that you can play anytime w/o having to worry about UMDs (plus the load times from the memory card is much better). Depending on what region you are in, there's different selections of downloadable PSX games you can get for around $6, either from the ps3 store or the online PC store too.

Recent download only releases Everyday Shooter and Super Stardust are probably good pick up and play in short bursts games to have on there (if you don't have the ps3 versions). I also found Echochrome an enjoyable playthrough when on the road (though once you beat it, there's not a lot of temptation to go back to it).

For racing there's the Wipeout games and also Burnout Legends seems well done (though just reprises the earlier ps2 games).

I'm a big fan of the Gradius collection, Mega Man Powered Up, Lumines, Space Invaders Extreme and Tekken DR.

The various multi-title collections, like the two Capcom collections or the SNK one, offer a pretty good value.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 26 December 2008 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks so much for your tips.

Yesterday I picked up a 4Gb memory card (bargained it down to $40) and Wipeout Pure, which I've not played yet. The Echochrome demo is fantastic. Fighting games, meh, pass.

Pope Gay Homo XVI (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 27 December 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

Supposedly starting in 2009, all new first party psp games will be available for download and I'd imagine most new games (if there are any).

I bought the Mega Man X remake today - just made it to the first boss, but so far it seems pretty great.

Another remake coming in 2009 (supposedly) that I'm REALLY looking forward to is Umihara Kawase as Yumi's Odd Odyssey in the US. The rumor was that they were fixing up the (reportedly) crappy Japanese port, though I haven't heard anything for a while - so I don't know if it's still on track?

Also looking forward to LocoRoco 2, which looks to improve on the first. I guess it's already out in some territories?

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 28 December 2008 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

It's out here. Got the demo but haven't played it yet.

If you buy a game and delete it, do you have to buy it again?

Pope Gay Homo XVI (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 28 December 2008 09:40 (sixteen years ago)

Nah - it's tied to your account, so I believe you can download it again as many times as you want as long as you do it through the same account.

Puzzle Quest is the most addictive PSP game. Lumines games are the second most addictive puzzle games in my opinion.
Any fighter game - Like Street Fighter 2 Alpha 3 Max - hurts your fingers like crap and is not worth it.
Other than that, if you have cracked your psp and download .iso's (or .cso's) of any psp game you want, I suggest getting at least a 4gb memory stick. I have a 1gb memory stick and certain games I cannot fit on it. It is incredibly easy for me to download any game I want off a torrent. Since some games are smaller than others I have 4 on my memory stick right now (N+, Street Fighter.., Locoroco, and Puzzle Quest).

The upcoming games I'm personally interested in is definitely led by Gran Turismo (Oct. 1), but there's also Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, Hot Shots Tennis, Persona remake, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid Peace Waker, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, Fate/Unlimited Codes Portable, Tekken 6, Pixel Junk Monsters Deluxe and Fat Princess. There's also a selection of about 40 more ps1 games promised before the end of 2009 (gotta be a few good things in that batch - Metal Gear Solid this week or next, I think, for instance). Of course you can still download and play all those games on the older, cheaper PSPs. The smaller size and lightness of the go is kind of appealing to me though. The price obviously less so, but...

Doesn't make sense - I thought nobody was buying UMDs anyway? I definitely prefer just downloading and having games on a memory card or hard drive, and am glad that's the way things seem to be going. I do think the big game stores are going to have trouble surviving in the long run, but it seems inevitable. If I were them, I wouldn't pass up the chance to at least sell some hardware, but whatever - it's their money to lose.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 17 September 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

i thought the reason the Go was so expensive was because they'd built in a much larger margin to placate the retailers?

I just tried out the Rock Band Unplugged demo & people should be talking about this games as it seems awesome - I'm definitely going to pick it up. It's basically a very slick version of Amplitude. You play it with the left and up buttons on the-pad & the triangle and circle buttons (your thumbs resting over the buttons?), and move between streams with the L or R buttons. Here's a video from it in on expert (obviously not me and not a great run, but it'll give you an idea)...

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 20 September 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

It got a pretty tepid critical reaction, if i remember correctly. It seemed kind of fun when i tried it out on a demo kiosk.

Euro retailers boycotting the PSP Go since digital distribution is going to eff them in the ay.

I am in the UK and pretty much can't find PSP games in any shops any more anyway, so, uh...

I never patched my PSP to run homebrew because I was scared of bricking it - I take it I could still run paid-for digitally distributed games off the memory card? Haven't looked into how it all works.

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 21 September 2009 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

That's exactly it - you can use any psp to play any of the digitally released games off your memory card - and you can now buy an 8 gig Sandisk Memory Stick Pro DUO for just $22 US(!). One of the major disadvantages with the new pspgo is that you won't be able to use it to play games that aren't released digitally or import games, so I think it's pretty smart to stick with the older systems for now. I also like the bigger size screen and it seems like the button placement is better (even if it's not great).

Having a handful of good games on your memory card is nice though. Games load faster, use less battery and obviously you never have to hear the umd drive spinning. There's around 100 or so games available digitally now (depends on your region though), and they've promised to have 300 available October 1st - though I think that is a typical bullshit Sony promise - as I can't see them accomplishing that in the next two weeks. To legally get stuff on there, if you're on a wireless network and have the latest firmware 6.0 you can access their online store directly from your psp. Just as easy, download their media go thing on PC, connect your psp to your computer via usb and you can shop online via media go... oh, you can get that here http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/mediago/default_enu.asp?page=download

Nhex, I checked out the reviews for Rock Band PSP and they're mixed, I guess, but a lot of really positive ones too (four in the 90s) http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/psp/rockbandunplugged?q=rock band psp

The main criticism in the low scores seems to be that the game recycles songs from the console games and that it's just more fun to play Rock Band on Rock Band instruments than a PSP.

But here's the thing... I live in an old apartment building and never bought Rock Band or Guitar Hero as I thought those types of games would piss off my neighbors

So I went for the PSP version (after trying out the demo a bunch) and I'm REALLY enjoying it. In a way, it feels like what negative comments there are were based upon & caught up in the game being called and marketed as Rock Band portable. If instead it had been called Amplitude 2 portable, I think people may have felt more positively about it.

The controls did take me a little while to get used to, but now that I've unlocked about half the game and am getting better and better at it, I find myself having those zen moments, where everything is just clicking and it really feels great. I don't think I'll ever be able to do the expert runs though - game is pretty hardcore. Definitely worth checking out.

Yeah, getting to try out the demo of the new Metal Gear game six months early was a cool surprise. It definitely felt like a couple things were missing that will end up in the final game - most notably, you can go prone in the demo, but you can't crawl. Overall, it made a very good first impression. Controls were good. Visuals were really nice. Felt very close to MGS3. The demo is all in Japanese though, so it was even more confusing than normal! Although I didn't get to try it out, the demo makes it seem like the game has a big emphasis on being played co-op. It seems like the game will be composed of a lot of arena like areas where you have to take out everything to pass to the next area. So maybe less of a focus on sneaking gameplay and more of a focus on mini-boss type encounters? At least that was the impression I got from the three demo levels. Anyhow, I enjoyed the demo enough that I actually want to replay it and see if I can do better & figure more stuff out. That's more than I can say for MGS4!

I already have it for PSP, it's really the only tower defense game I've ever enjoyed for more than a few minutes. the ability to play it at the dinner table/on the bus/on the terlit w/o having to fuck around with Remote Play is frighteningly appealing.

Adhoc party is officially coming to North America (supposedly this month)
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/11/adhocparty-for-psp-available-soon/

"PSP titles with adhoc mode traditionally require you to play within close proximity to each other. AdhocParty takes advantage of the interoperable capabilities of the PSP and PS3 systems. It enables you to play games featuring Ad Hoc mode, such as Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, over the Internet through the PS3. Your PSP connects to the PS3 via Wi-Fi, allowing you to chat online with fellow gamers in North America before jumping into competition from the comforts of each of your respective living rooms."

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 13 November 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

I tried AdHoc Party out tonight. It was very weird to actually be able to race other people online in Wipeout Pure. I need to get back into practice. The system is a little clunky and crazy, it reminds me of trying to use the internet in the early days. Kind of fun actually.

There's a walkthrough here... http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/11/adhocparty-for-psp-the-walkthrough/
Probably worth watching just to see how weird the system is.

I just bought one of these, for some reason... PSP, LBP and Patapon 2 for $100. Are there any other good games? Any at all? Including those snack-sized deals?

antexit, Monday, 8 March 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

Both PSP Wipeout games are excellent, though I think the second, Pulse, is better and has online play. Mega Man Powered Up is also a really great game.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 8 March 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

what about that Joan of Arc game?

antexit, Monday, 8 March 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

I'd pay about a hundred bucks for that; they should start at that price and then stop.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 8 March 2010 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

$100 for the thing and two good games or $100 for the thing?

antexit, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 00:07 (fifteen years ago)

Lamp, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe is a version of PJM you can play on the terlit, so of course it's a win. Sid Meier's Pirates is a portable version of maybe the greatest strategy game ever. Half-Minute Hero is fun & unique. I think there's a PSP Persona game too.

having said all that, I just sold my PSP a few weeks ago and don't really miss it; even my game-hoarding ass can't justify keeping a system I play less than my GBA. also the battery life is a butt.

/no cobo (jamescobo), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

What are you still playing on the GBA?

Nhex, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

cozen, Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

It seems like there's another mini-wave of interesting titles coming, with both Peace Walker and Hot Shots Tennis in June, Persona 3 in July, and Mod Nation Racers (using the Wipeout engine) in May.

Also very curious to see if June will bring news of a psp2. Would be crazy if they could make it run downloadable ps2 games and if it has a second analog stick (hopefully improved from the nub). Or maybe they will go in a more iPod Touch direction?

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 25 March 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'm almost tempted to pick up a cheap 3000

sturksducken (cozen), Thursday, 25 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

I have a 3000 and feel like it's a big improvement over the original model, especially the buttons and d-pad feel better & brighter screen that got rid of the motion blur is nice. That said, I still feel like it's the least essential of the primarily game playing devices currently on the market. Also 5 years old!

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 25 March 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

did anyone pick up patchwork heroes? I love the visual style

cozen, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

I just tried out the demo. It's basically QIX. The graphic style is really nice, but I didn't find the gameplay too compelling. Basically you're a lil' guy moving across a flat ship and you have a time limit to cut off portions of the ship, which eventually will destroy it when you've trimmed off enough parts (or if you don't the ship drops it's bombs and you can try again from the beginning). There didn't seem to be much to it - at least on the two early demo levels I tried out (I didn't even feel interested enough to beat the second level).

Thats a bargain.

I got my PSP go cheap after my phat bit the dust and I use it all the time. but that said, my feelings would be different if I had paid £250 for it.

I always hated UMDs anyway and a Go with a 8 gig card in it can have all the games above plus a load of films and .mp3s

but this is most probably a flush before the PSP2 gets announced and really no one buys a go.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

So there's a new, really easy hack for the psp out that allows you to run homebrew & emulators (NES, SNES, PC Engine etc). No pandora batteries or weirdness, it's a simple exploit involving the Patapon 2 demo. Only up to firmware 6.2 though. Even works on pspGO.

This thread explains how simple it is...

I note that 5 out of 7 PSP Coint+Plick noms so far are JRPGs - is this the one remaining PSP market?

(I enjoyed the hacking and slashing bits of Recettear, maybe I should find out if I like jRPGS proper. Though apparently I was playing it on an earlier version which had much easier combat than it was meant to, and I'm too scared to upgrade because I don't want to die any more often. So if real ones will have me dying every 30 seconds I guess I'm not into them.)

I'll be curious to see whether they're subsidizing the 3G connection (either they do that or any kids who want this thing will have to come up with monthly money). I wouldn't be surprised at all if they ended up with 2 different offerings - one $500 w/ subsidized 3G and one $300 w/ a $30/month contract.

for balance, here is a list of THINGS I DO FIND APPEALING ABOUT THIS THING
- cross-compatability w/ select PS3 games (i.e. some PS3 games will let you continue playing on PSP2, allegedly without even having to buy it a second time [though we'll see about that])
- non-disc media
- touch-sensitive back panel (been intrigued by this ever since it was mentioned as a possibility for the iphone 4)
- screen will probably be purty
- dual analogue sticks will be rad if/when this thing gets ha><ored
- a 3G connection which actually allows you to impulse-buy games anywhere would be great if they can actually pull it off in a manner which doesn't make this thing EVEN MORE expensive
- Uncharted
- thin
- buying new toys is fun

yachts on the reg, sex on the reg (jamescobo), Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

xxpost time marches on; every console & handheld put on the market since like 2004 (except for the PSP Go and DSi/XL) allows you to play at least SOME of your old games without having to buy them all over again. 3DS will too.

Now need recs for titles.

so far, I've picked up:

Patapon 1/2
LocoRoco
Wipeout Pure
Jeanne D'arc
PixelJunk: Monster Party or something
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

Stuff I dig: JRPGs, games with really cool weird Japanese art-design , 16-bit graphic aesthetics, etc

Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Sunday, 1 May 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

Valkyria Chronicles 2; Persona 3 Portable; Tactics Ogre: LUCT, Maybe the Kingdom Hearts game if you're into that, also: crack the sucker & PS1 RPGs = :)

Alderaan Duran (Will M.), Sunday, 1 May 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

P3 Portable is a must. the Ys games are fun Zelda ripoffs. Half-Minute Hero is retardedly fun, I totally would have voted for it in C&P (SIGH) if I'd played it in time. and of course I will never pass up a chance to recommend Sid Meier's Pirates.

you penis-curling she-devils (jamescobo), Sunday, 1 May 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

Final Fantasy Tactics: War Lions, Castlevania Dracula X

And thusly create the illusion of babby (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 1 May 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

I'll second the ys games but I don't really think they're zelda rip-offs. the combat is quite different. very fast-paced and similar to brawlers in the later games.

have only played ps2 person 3 but that's a great one, yeah.

don't play too many racers but outrun 2006 is one of my faves. top-notch sega blue skies action.

if you're into shmups, I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the star solider psp collection. that's an import but it's fairly cheap for one and the psp isn't region locked.

is valkyrie profile any good?

they're cheap! this is a great system for budget gaming.

it is sad but their is so much beauty (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 15 May 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

I liked the Star Ocean remake even if I had no idea what was going on half the time.

The Disgaea game has the most irritatingly juvenile JRPG plot and characters but the gameplay is really great. It's turn-based strategy but somehow it works quite differently.

Isnt one of the Disgaea games really good and the rest crap?

Also, the psp port of Ys 1 makes for a suprising great air-travel rpg. It's an 8bit jrpg with a graphical upgrade, but the simplicity and terseness make ideal for bouncing in & out of in airports, airplanes, on the train home, etc

It just needs a mini-map.

The one I got was Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness which is a port of a PS2 game iirc. It's almost universally considered good (but like I say the humor, story, and characters are awful as is the voice acting) but there are a bunch of spin-offs which I don't think are that great.
