Guitar Hero

Anyone?

I've heard some griping elsewhere on the net that it's too easy, but I can't remember the last time I found the 'normal' difficulty on a music game interesting enough to play all the way through. I don't even like most of these songs ordinarily and I'm having a blast.

JJRJ (jjrj), Sunday, 6 November 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I liked the arcade edition that had Andrew WK

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 6 November 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Holy christ, this game is amazing.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

seems like a great party game, tho, like darts, one too many beers and you're playing for shit.

also, i like how it's far harder to play the video game versions of the songs than on an actual guitar. "I wanna be sedated" is NOT that hard, dammit.

and I like how much harmonics are worked in.

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I gotta say that the game totally wears out your left hand pretty quickly. I can play most video games for a long time, but about six songs of Guitar Hero and my hand is fried.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 21 November 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

I just got this. I am amazed. I'm still on medium, and blue buttoning like a champ, but I saw some of the songs on expert and am amazed/terrified.

ethanol demagogue (ethdem), Friday, 2 December 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

I like this game a lot! I never really connected with DDR because the steps required felt so unnatural (and watching other people play the steps look pretty unnatural too!) and not with the groove; but with this game the motions feel right, even if they're not too much like the motions you would make if you were actually playing the songs on a real guitar. Plus it has some good songs on there! A very good licensing effort.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 2 December 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

this game would be stupendous if it had a "create-your-own" song thing to it. Download a song and add your own notes, etc. It'd be killer to play Black Flag or Radio Birdman tracks on here.

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 2 December 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

I've finished the first level on hard and 2 of 5 songs on the second level of hard but it seems that I've reached the limits of my skills.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 4 December 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

so is the game fun or not

jesse kammerud, Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

probably

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I can't stop playing it.

I was wrong about reaching the limits of my skills. I am pretty close to finishing the expert level (6 songs left).

This is definitely my game of the year. Psychonauts is more creative and Katamari was great, but Guitar Hero is the most fun for me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 18 December 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

i had this on my amazon wish list for xmas but they it is 'unavailable'. lame.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I've only played a few times, but it's loads of fun. I don't know how to play a guitar at all, but was able to play this better than Donkey Konga. It's funny to see your friends toe-tapping to the beat as they play, and raising the guitar upright for rock star power.

The way we play is: one person plays while everyone watches (and boos when the audience starts to boo in the game, and shouting "You SUCK! Get off the stage!"). The songs are full-length, so if you've got 5 people waiting to take a turn, it'll be a while before you get to play again. But that's okay. I need to find someone else w/Guitar Hero so we can do the two player mode...

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

The two player mode is pretty boring, sadly. I recommend against spending extra money on it. They basically just let you switch off during the song, but the switchoffs are completely illogical. It just isn't as much fun as taking turns playing the game normally.

What I'd like to see with the next game is something that allows one person to play rhythm or bass while the other plays lead, or maybe they can switch off in this respect. Having people trade leads just doesn't work well.

hey does anyone know when its coming out in australia?

two months pass...
amazing

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

agreed. i suck at the 'normal' difficulty though. 'easy' was easy.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

i finally beat frankenstein on expert. two songs left!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Just got it! It will take me apprioximately forever to beat it, but very fun for a party game.

patita (patita), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

i beat it on normal in 2 days.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

And me! I'm sort of scared of starting hard mode, so I might finish all the unlockable songs first.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 9 April 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey, hard mode is where this game's at.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 9 April 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the game gets fun on Hard and Expert.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 April 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

we played a lot of this today. it goes well with the alcohol. i think i'm going to have to buy it tomorrow.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

pleasant plains and i watched the 'guitar cheaters' episode of the cheating show on the game network on saturday. just the fact that this game actually has cheats is kind of bizarre. what are the unlockable songs? anything good/fun to play?

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

There's one called "Hey" which is like the best song in the game, and "All of This" is great too. I seem to play these two more than any of the "real" songs.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

The best unlockable songs for my money are "Sail Your Ship By" by Count Zero (awesome long notes to go crazy with the whammy) and "Ready to Rokk" by Freezepop. "All of This" is real good. "Hey" bothers me.

What cheats are there?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

only two. one unlocks all the unlockables: songs, characters (that grim reaper is WRONG), locations. The other keeps your audience meter in the green so you cant fail a song. why? i dont know.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

I know why. So you can practice "Cowboys from Hell" over and over again on expert without it failing at the 8% point.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

ohhh. well i cant get through normal so...

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Practice makes perfect but also ruins social life.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

ha, OTM. it's amazing that it feels like you are actually PRACTICING playing the guitar.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

I am getting my copy of Guitar Hero 2 tonight! Woo-hoo!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 November 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

YES JOHN.... BUT I AM NOT VERY GOOD
i think i made it most of the way through hard difficulty.

Please to be calling and setting up a weekend visit to dirty jersey. We will buy you dinner.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I was gonna wait for the 360 version to come out in case they offered downloadable content on Live (attn Red Octane/Activision: "Super Bad" please) but then I figured 3-6 months is too long to wait to do "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight".

nate p. (natepatrin), Saturday, 11 November 2006 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

I can't even start to play it.
I'm a guitar/bass player, and that makes it hard to play game that has effectively one string and five frets and tries to map many chords to them....

The GZeus (The GZeus), Saturday, 11 November 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

I know a lot of people who play the guitar/bass who don't have any problem playing the game.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 11 November 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

Define "play."

The GZeus (The GZeus), Saturday, 11 November 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

HEAVY SIGH

ledge (ledge), Saturday, 11 November 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

Well, one has to completely disengage from the idea of...playing an instrument.

I'd probably do better if I played it backwards, or something.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Saturday, 11 November 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

Well, one has to completely disengage from the idea of...playing an instrument.

Exactly. It's just Beatmania with the buttons in weird places really.

ledge (ledge), Saturday, 11 November 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

I think that if I bought this game, no one would ever hear from me again.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Saturday, 11 November 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

I think I may ask for this for Christmas, I've been meaning to check it out for ages.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Saturday, 11 November 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Define "play."

They are in bands who play gigs that fans go to. You know, rock guitarists.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 11 November 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

that's one of the things about the game, that i've probably mentioned before; it's easier to play the actual songs on actual guitars that some of the game versions

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 11 November 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

tried playing GH2 tonight; friend's copy had damage, preventing us from playing co-op

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 12 November 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

For fuck's sake GZeus. Has it not occurred to you that the original tracks in this game were written and performed by the developers? This game was made by and for guitarists! (Of course, I'm not denying that it's harder to play the Ramones in this game than it is in real life, but having a basic grasp of the guitar makes Guitar Hero a lot easier.)

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 12 November 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

it actually helps more to be a drummer than a guitarist to be good at this--it's all rhythm

cuttye, did you ever play taiko no tatsujin?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Fucking Buckethead.

govern yourself accordingly (dayan), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

haha

I'm already thinking about songs that would be great in GHIII. Slave's "Slide" would be hilarious because for two minutes it'd be like "this sucks, it's just the same rhythm over and over" and then the solo comes in and murders you.

nate p. (natepatrin), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

"-- melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO!"

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 November 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

I played this game all day. Almost finished with Hard. Still haven't failed a song but "Hangar 18" and "Freebird" loom on the horizon.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've used this screen/stage name for almost 10 years.
And how on earth did you possibly get the idea I was talking about that humanoid's screen name?

I was talking about the holier-than-thou attitude and crass, egotistical manner. Basically, they were pointlessly rude.

It has 5 buttons and one switch.
This takes the place of up to 24 notes per string on 6 strings. That's 144 fretting positions, and a tremendous number of possible chords.
It doesn't take into account different playing styles.
One becomes accustomed to certain positions for certain notes/scales.

Hell, 6 notes would have covered half of a full octave and double-button presses would cover the notes in between.
Instead I'm left with movements that have no spacial relationship to the notes.

Again, I'd probably do alright left-handed, or lap-steel style. BOTH might be best.

My friend tried to play it(he's really a better guitarist than I) and it was giving him just as much of a headache.
He turned it left handed, flailed at it, and won.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

you both suck then

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

well, fuck you too.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

seriously, GZ, chill out. if you can't handle the cutty, you can't fly with us.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 05:56 (nineteen years ago)

and won.

On what setting? The game is barely even worth playing until you get to the Hard difficulty.

This takes the place of up to 24 notes per string on 6 strings. That's 144 fretting positions, and a tremendous number of possible chords.

yes, it's a video game, not a real guitar.

It doesn't take into account different playing styles.

yes, it's a video game, not a real guitar.

One becomes accustomed to certain positions for certain notes/scales.

I would imagine that would be the case when playing a guitar, but given the fact that the controller only bears a passing similarity to playing a guitar, and the fact that the screen displays no notation for any specific notes or scales, I don't see how that issue would even arise unless you just happen to have all of these songs memorized.

Hell, 6 notes would have covered half of a full octave and double-button presses would cover the notes in between.
Instead I'm left with movements that have no spacial relationship to the notes.

Yeah, but it's not a real guitar. No one has ever suggested that it was. It's a rhythm game, and an opportunity to interact with rock songs in a fun way. If you think it's supposed to be much of anything like actually playing guitar, NEWS FLASH. It isn't.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 07:24 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, ever heard of 'play by ear?'
I can follow most songs with a reasonable degree of accuracy. It's neccesary for improvisation.

I KNOW it's not a guitar. I KNOW it's not supposed to be.
My point is one need to completely seperate oneself from playing guitar to play it.
What's yours?

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

My point is that it should be obvious that a controller with five colored buttons and a switch is going to require separation to play it, and complaining about how it is unlike actually playing an actual guitar is like complaining that a video game racing game is unlike driving a car or etc. It requires the same sort of suspension of disbelief that any video game necessitates.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

Also, cutty is 100% right that it is more akin to playing the drums than playing the guitar.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

I was playing Counterstrike but wiggling a crosshair about with a mouse bears no relationship whatsoever to aiming and firing a real gun. One needs to completely separate oneself from actual gun firing to play it.

And don't get me started on Spiderman - in what fucking world is pressing R2 anything like shotting web?

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

singstar + ddr or guitar hero is my dream, all four might be overkill though. I once tried a ddr style game with sensors for the hands as well - only had one attempt but found it near impossible!

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

So you're basically calling me an asshole for having difficulties because I play guitar?

I reccommend D-Con to kill whatever crawled up your ass.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

GZeus, please, please, please, chill the fuck out. Every other poster manages to keep it in their pants when somebody disagrees with them, but you seem to explode or tell someone to fuck themselves about twice a week.

GZeus you have a little sand in your vagina.

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

gzeus, actually i think your problem is playing on easy maybe. there are definitely less notes on easy and it is less intuitive because you feel you should be playing more.

try a harder level or maybe go get your reflexes checked? ever play simon when you were younger? like--you see a color and hit that button?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Any word on whether the XBox version of GH2 will incorporate the GH1 songs, or are those crafty bastards going to make the GH1 traxx part of the D/L'd content?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

even people who don't like video games love this game!
it's that much fun!

edde (edde), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

GZeus, people are calling you an asshole becuse you overreact every time someone disagrees with you. Exactly three people have been unnecessarily vitriolic with you and all of them were, to varying degrees, not being serious, yet you've taken those interactions and filtered all of your subsequent reactions on this board to those interactions. Please stop doing that.

First thing i said "I play guitar alot, so it's hard for me."
SOmeone else says "myfriend play guitar and does well."
I say "it's nothing like playing guitar, maybe if I played it left handed I could seperate the two more easily."
Then people start bitching at me no matter what their opinion might be.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, when I told you that my friend played guitar, you said "Define 'play.'" That was the first comment in this thread that seemed rude to me, but maybe I was being overly sensitive?

Anyway, I love this game and cannot even remotely play the guitar.

Which is pointless since you AGREE WITH ME.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

And android Cat.
Why do you think I'm even talking about you?

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

Well, you're talking to me, you're being inappropriately screamy and you won't listen to me when I say you're being inappropriately screamy. The only reason I'm bothering having this discussion with you is because you are friends with one of my best friends and therefore must have something more to you than the deranged, outrageously touchy madman persona you're giving us here.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

And poly, your comment comes off as "Well, i know people that can do it so you suck."

My comment was meant as a rebuttal to the common complaint against this game by people who have never or have barely played it, which is "no person who actually plays guitar would waste their time with such a game." If that wasn't your meaning, I apologize.

My two favorite racing games are Forza Motorsport (a game so sim-anal that the temperature of the track can have an effect on how the car handles) and Midnight Club 3 (where you can press a button and make all the cars around you fly off the road like BOOM).

Probably the best thing about GH2 is playing through it the first time and going through encores, which are sprung on you without giving you any idea of what the song is going to be until you accept. Then the caption says "CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON" and I'm all "oh shit no".

I love the logic that thinks temporarily banning the egregiously oversensitive Gzeus is going to help him calm down rather than make him throw a hissy fit.

-- Dan Barramouss

well the part about it being temporary is a bad idea.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 17 November 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

that kansas song is pretty rad to play though!

Yeah, it's just that at first I was freaking out about all the tricky cord changes and the length of the song and all of the squibbily-flabbily-doo moments. I think I three-starred it on medium.

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 17 November 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

(uh, chord changes)

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 17 November 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Just got this great game. In GZeus' defense, not in defense of his being a cock but in defense of what he was saying, I can kind of see how being a guitar player would make this game a little frustrating, as it's nothing like playing guitar but it keeps making you want to think it is-- though the idea that you'd be so unusually skilled as a guitar player that picking up this game you'd have to cripple yourself to enjoy it is obviously total bullshit.

antexit (antexit), Friday, 17 November 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

i think the easy level is hard for guitar players--once you start to match all the notes on the harder levels it becomes more realistic

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 November 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Judging from the size/shape of the parcel that just turned up, i think i may possibly be getting this for Christmas.

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

'you really got me' fucked me up bad last night. very upset that it was the van halen version and not the kinks...

i am not a nugget (stevie), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hey-- just moving up to Hard now. Do people mainly alternate with their pinky for the fifth fret, or shift the position of their whole hand/ It is KICKING MY ASS right now.

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

You can't play the game well without the pinky, in my opinion.

Wait until you get to Expert! "Rock This Town" and the Heart song are busting my balls.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I'm usuing my pinky for the fourth fret, but I'm wondering if you stretch it for the fifth as well, or if you shift your whole hand one position down so your index finger is resting on the second fret. What's your fave song in the game, poly?

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I'm usuing my pinky for the fourth fret, but I'm wondering if you stretch it for the fifth as well

I only stretch it when I have to (quick succession of notes between first and fifth button, for instance).

What's your fave song in the game, poly?

I tend to prefer playing the groovier songs (Allman Bros, Stones, Freebird, Wayward Son), which is weird in that I don't listen to that stuff at all (apart from the Stones).

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

SURRENDER!!!

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 23 November 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
360 details. None of the new songs mentioned really interest me except for "Billion Dollar Babies" (!!!) and I'm wondering if they somehow managed to find two guys that sing like Alice Cooper and Donovan.

Finally played this for the first time last night and it's love.
How long till the wii? Should I just give up and ebay it for ps2?

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 11 March 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Forget it, I just bought it from red octane. 72 bucks for a gh2 game, guitar and kit bag (?), w/no shipping seems like an okay deal. BUT I HAVE TO WAIT FIVE DAYS

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 11 March 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

I (polyphonic) recently defeated all of the songs on Expert in both games, and so now I'm in the process of trying to five star every song on Expert, with a few four stars left on Hard as well. I am a little bit obsessed.

Oakland Mike, Monday, 12 March 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

Waitin' till 5:00 then it's on!

forksclovetofu, Friday, 23 March 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I got stuck halfway through Hard :( I can't do the really fast sections.

abanana, Friday, 23 March 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Practice makes perfect. If you keep trying, you'll get better. I would get stuck and put the game away for a week, and when I'd come back I'd be a little better than I was before.

Oakland Mike, Sunday, 25 March 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hard IS really hard! So far, I've only been able to do Woman and Surrender and I had to practice with woman for about a half hour.
Just about finished 5 starring all of the medium... With hard, somebody said the last key was a pinky reach and it's been my experience thus far that you just move your hand up and down the fret board... surely I'm not the only one doing this?

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 25 March 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

You guys heard about Rock Band yet? Harmonix's next game adds drums & vocals:

just picked up GH2 for my 360. not in the mood to play it, though.

funny farm, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

360 GH controller looks better than the PS2 one. Is it likely they'll release an X-plorer for the PS2? At least I'll get to play this when I visit my parents this weekend, even if it means spending time with idiot brother-in-law.

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 08:45 (eighteen years ago)

Christ - no one told me you could get Flying V shaped controllers for the PS2 version. What the fuck? Persuade me not to buy one of these right away.

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

buy one. you'll enjoy it.

you can rent guitar hero at blockbuster?
and they give you the controller and everything?....
they didn't even give me the microphone for mario party, when i rented that.

why is this never working at gamestations i go into?!?!

rio natsume, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

hard is getting a little easier! Damn if this game doesn't have the best learning curve ever.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

I am finding it so hard to justify buying this for the 360. What's really new in it?

The downloadable songs thing is cool, but surely that means paying for more shit. I'm all about the achievements, that's definitely a factor, as well as the leaderboards. But why can't the guitar be wireless, or at least have some kind of online multiplayer to make this a worthwhile purchase for PS2 owners?

melton mowbray, Saturday, 7 April 2007 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

my brother told me something about microsoft being the only company aloud to make wireless controllers for the 360.

and, i bet if it was wireless, it would need 4 D batteries or something. it would just be too much of a hassle to keep buying batteries for it.

funny farm, Monday, 9 April 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Ah true, and also geeky perfectionists would complain about "response time" and that.

Anyway, I got the Xbox version too, and it's just as great. Leaderboards are amazing, I can compete with my friends even from home, without booze, with actual high scores!

melton mowbray, Monday, 9 April 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

I just played this this weekend -BEST THING EVAH!

Should I get GH 1 or just go ahead and get 2?

Ms Misery, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

Been thralling out on my 360. New obsession.

There is a open-source pc version and you can use the 360 controller.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/fretsonfire

Also, search piratebay for a couple of torrent packs containing a couple hundred songs. You can edit and create your own. This goes to eleven.

valoss, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I just have PS2. :(

Ms Misery, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

Achievements are excellent. HOWEVER - wtf with having to complete easy and medium after I've already done hard? I had this problem with the PS2 version but at least with that there wasn't much incentive because it only unlocked some silly guitars. On 360 it seems mandatory, which is a bit of a bummer. Can't it just give me the easy and medium achievements for completing it on hard like Gears of War? I'm desperately searching for a way to make playing through the easy mode fun, but all that comes to mind is blinding myself with a screwdriver (or playing with my back to the screen, of course). But then I wouldn't get five stars on each song. What to do!?

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Melton - I agree this is tre lame. Try playing the songs lefty.

valoss, Thursday, 12 April 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I thought that, but I also want the achievement for getting them all 5 stars! Maybe I'll play lefty and any of the ones I balls up on I can replay.

melton mowbray, Thursday, 12 April 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well, those fuckers have screwed us on the downloadable songs, making them far too expensive and packaging at least one shitty song in every download:

http://blog.wired.com/music/2007/04/guitar_hero_2_s.html

antexit, Thursday, 12 April 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 12 April 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I just had some major shift in my playing ability while doing Psychobilly Freakout and just tackled the hard ones seriously for the first time... it's fun!
I can't get over how long the learning curve on this thing goes. I don't see how I'm getting better, but I am.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 15 April 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

Also loving: the Stones, the Pretenders, Matthew Sweet, Heart, Lamb of God. The Stonehenge grouping sucks, tho - FU LIVING END! And tho I did OK on the Avenged Sevenfold song, GOD IT BLOWS.

David R., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

are you guys playing this on hard or medium?

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm on hard right now, but I'm sorta wussing out - if I get a YOU ROCK w/ only a 3 star rating, I move on. Perfection will come after I win it all.

David R., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

I've not played this with the guitar, but it's EMBARRASSING how good one of my friends is. Expert with all of the stars on all but 3 songs.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

I left the office and there was a Microsoft/Harmonix sponsored massive truck parked across the street and there were two HDTVs with guitars attached and some chick leaping up and down screaming "LIFT THE GUITAR!!! LIFT THE GUITAAAAAR!" People kept stopping and like half of them could shred. One guy did 88% on Psychobilly on Expert. I was agog.
I mean, I AM near NYU but wtf.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 29 April 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

I backtracked last week & tried re-doing Medium. I've five-starred every song I've played so far. I AM ACTUALL IMPROVING.

I do not look forward to "Institutionalized," tho.

David R., Monday, 30 April 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Forks is so right about the learning curve. I'm getting 5 stars on expert now, and not so long ago I was flipping out to get 5 on medium. That said, I've still got a couple of songs to 5 star on hard. Iron Maiden is a joke. 95% and I still get 4 stars!?

Wolfmother: Balls Forever

David R., Monday, 7 May 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

I am on Freebird on expert! Why did they make this song ever so slightly harder than the rest? Also the fact that the bit that kills me comes about six minutes into the song, after minutes of easy stuff, is a bit of a wind up.

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

Because it's fucking FREEBIRD!

David R., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

kat to thread! she pwned every song on medium, first time, but for some reason Freebird was her mental block and took like at least 10 tries.

Fuck the bird I cannot change :(

The Megadeth one just before it was so easy in comparison.

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Wicked Man, Wicked, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone else's controller started fucking up?

Mine's PS2 and I've had it exactly a month. Today it seemed to have a delay from when you pushed the fret buttons till when they played. We've been failing on songs we've mastered so it's not us. Cursory search suggests it might be a short on the cord. Taping the cord to the body and moving it around really isn't helping. Ideas?

I don't think I have the original reciept, have to look. grr.

Ms Misery, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

None of you gamers have had your guitar turn to shit on you?

I think I'm going to take mine apart tonight. What I'll do with it after that I have no idea. But I figure I can't make it any worse than it is now.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I've had some issues with the little nub where the cord comes out of the bottom getting glitchy.... prolly shouldn't have rested it standing up. Otherwise, no problems.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

I had some timing issues that I SWEAR weren't a result of me sucking, so a friend resynced the controller to the TV. But then I was having more timing issues, so I resynced again, & now everything is wicked awesome.

Before you start breaking things, I'd see if resyncing does anything first.

David R., Monday, 14 May 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

how do you resync?

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

It's in one of the Options menu - forget which one, tho. & I'm playing on the 360, so it might be different than the PS2.

David R., Monday, 14 May 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, I will check.

Other things I've read online suggest it might be a short (I've also been storing in on end) or humidity inside.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

David I kiss you!

Thank goodness I tried that before bust it open. . .

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

man

trying to get through the last 10 songs on expert just makes everything else so easy

HPSCHD, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

The opening to "Crazy For You" gives me fits. I'm on the HARD stage w/ the Anthrax & Reverend Horton Heat & Lamb of God songs. I'm gonna be there a while.

David R., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

That's where I got stuck too! Going back and trying to five star all the other hard level songs is not working so well; I can generally four star everything, but that last little bit is killing me.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Though, in fairness, I have sorta stopped playing except sporadically and I'm finding that you really need concentrated guitar time to improve.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

I've just started on Hard but went back and am trying to five star on all of medium. I need to concentrate more on hard songs but haven't had the time/motivation lately.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

I wish the harder songs were BETTER, too - I've no problem w/ Iron Maiden or Skynyrd, but The Living End? Avenged Sevenfold? SUICIDAL TENDENCIES? Bllllllllllllllllow me.

I would experience true poppage if there was an indie-centric GH block.

David R., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

suicidal tendencies is cool but the rest of this metal stuff sucks. I have no idea who Living End, Avenged Sevenfold or Lamb of God are. (not that I care.)

Best Guitar Hero memory: after letting my 7-yr nephew take a crack at it one weekend, he was going around singing Danzig, haha.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

living end are from oz, very much wannabe clash with a rockabilly edge....

stevie, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

David R., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

(fuck that is an awful pun)

David R., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

i've gotten through most of everything by going to practice mode and doing hard sections and then feeling like getting through the songs is, well, not easy but not TOO much of a problem either. and then i do Misirlou with no practice and it's all OMG HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE so much fun!

too bad the 2 songs left are Hangar 18 and freebird, ones i don't really want to have to play over and over again.

I bought a guitar hero guitar off of Amazon for my 360 so I'm going to get the Metallica one and waste lots of time getting leet on it. JUMP IN THE FIAH

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 21 May 2009 11:22 (sixteen years ago)

I played the Metallica one on the Wii, and even though I'm not the biggest Metallica fan (not really a fan at all, but bought a couple of albums during the lol formative teenage years. Surprisingly satisfying when you blaze through the solos from some of the stuff on the harder settings. It's hard to explain, but it seems 'mapped' better. Like, some other games the solos feel like random button mashing, but a lot of the Metallica ones just feel more real... if that makes sense and doesn't sound totally lame.

CraigG, Thursday, 21 May 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

I recently bought a really crappy cheap third party guitar for the wii, and had a fucking BLAST playing world tour - for about an hour. Now the downstrum won't work, only the upstrum. Effectively, this means I can only play on medium difficulty because on the harder difficulties it's sometimes necessary to strum quickly using both up and down.

^ Z S on the internet here (Z S), Thursday, 21 May 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

Mine is a pretty snazzy official flying V one. I was never going to bother shelling out on one but I got some vouchers and you can't argue with free.

Confession of a lame hardcore gamer time: I've not played any of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band games very much at all, and so I'm pretty bad at them. They're the kind of games that people who aren't hardcore gamers are also in to, so lot's of my friends, who only have wiis or just generally don't spend much time playing games, are better than me at them. I now look forward to sonning all comers after I poopsock the hell out of this.

Did this actually come out for PC/Mac? Most under-the-radar Guitar Hero release ever.

^looks like that got pushed indefinitely...

Activision really wants to drive this into the ground, don't they? I realized Guitar Hero 5 is coming out Sept. 1 (beating Beatles RB by a week) but then BAND HERO was just announced - for late November! Looking it up I see that DJ Hero's also slated for October. Is there an audience out there that will actually buy all these?

I guess their theory is that they'll appeal to different audiences? Band hero is the family-friendly version of GH, etc. I'd definitely prefer a less rockist version of GH/RB, so band hero and even lego rock band are pretty appealing ideas to me (although I've not seen setlists for either yet).

More interested in whatever magic Harmonix may or may not have up their sleeve for RB3...

yeah, that's next step. I think the obvious direction is a keyboard.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

That would be great.

^called it!
on a whim, i bought a forty buck 360 guitar hero aerosmith bundle and beat it in one play on medium setting. Only about four good songs in the whole damn game!

gonna buy rock band 3 and then learn how to play two foreigner songs on piano
that's gotta be worth 180 bucks right?

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

Who would have thought that released 18 GH games a year would destroy the franchise?

The Guitar Hero series is finished, at least for now, with no game forthcoming for 2011 and its business unit to be disbanded, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today -- citing declines in the music genre and a desire to focus on higher-margin opportunities in the online space.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

i bought the same aerosmith bundle as forks for the same amount! and wow, he is not lying about the difficulty or the number of quality songs.

Guitar Hero was the best guitar video game ever and then they ruined it. I continue to hate the Rock Band controllers and their bullshit similarity to real guitars so people can feel less nerdy about the incredibly nerdy thing they're doing.
