I've heard some griping elsewhere on the net that it's too easy, but I can't remember the last time I found the 'normal' difficulty on a music game interesting enough to play all the way through. I don't even like most of these songs ordinarily and I'm having a blast.

also, i like how it's far harder to play the video game versions of the songs than on an actual guitar. "I wanna be sedated" is NOT that hard, dammit.
and I like how much harmonics are worked in.

I was wrong about reaching the limits of my skills. I am pretty close to finishing the expert level (6 songs left).
This is definitely my game of the year. Psychonauts is more creative and Katamari was great, but Guitar Hero is the most fun for me.

The way we play is: one person plays while everyone watches (and boos when the audience starts to boo in the game, and shouting "You SUCK! Get off the stage!"). The songs are full-length, so if you've got 5 people waiting to take a turn, it'll be a while before you get to play again. But that's okay. I need to find someone else w/Guitar Hero so we can do the two player mode...
― Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)
What I'd like to see with the next game is something that allows one person to play rhythm or bass while the other plays lead, or maybe they can switch off in this respect. Having people trade leads just doesn't work well.

I was talking about the holier-than-thou attitude and crass, egotistical manner. Basically, they were pointlessly rude.
It has 5 buttons and one switch. This takes the place of up to 24 notes per string on 6 strings. That's 144 fretting positions, and a tremendous number of possible chords. It doesn't take into account different playing styles. One becomes accustomed to certain positions for certain notes/scales.
Hell, 6 notes would have covered half of a full octave and double-button presses would cover the notes in between.Instead I'm left with movements that have no spacial relationship to the notes.
Again, I'd probably do alright left-handed, or lap-steel style. BOTH might be best.
My friend tried to play it(he's really a better guitarist than I) and it was giving him just as much of a headache. He turned it left handed, flailed at it, and won.

On what setting? The game is barely even worth playing until you get to the Hard difficulty.
This takes the place of up to 24 notes per string on 6 strings. That's 144 fretting positions, and a tremendous number of possible chords.
yes, it's a video game, not a real guitar.
It doesn't take into account different playing styles.
One becomes accustomed to certain positions for certain notes/scales.
I would imagine that would be the case when playing a guitar, but given the fact that the controller only bears a passing similarity to playing a guitar, and the fact that the screen displays no notation for any specific notes or scales, I don't see how that issue would even arise unless you just happen to have all of these songs memorized.
Yeah, but it's not a real guitar. No one has ever suggested that it was. It's a rhythm game, and an opportunity to interact with rock songs in a fun way. If you think it's supposed to be much of anything like actually playing guitar, NEWS FLASH. It isn't.
― polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 07:24 (nineteen years ago)
I KNOW it's not a guitar. I KNOW it's not supposed to be.My point is one need to completely seperate oneself from playing guitar to play it.What's yours?

Probably the best thing about GH2 is playing through it the first time and going through encores, which are sprung on you without giving you any idea of what the song is going to be until you accept. Then the caption says "CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON" and I'm all "oh shit no".

I only have guitar hero 2 on the box. I really wish i could play ziggy stardust. This might be my favourite game ever even though i have no idea how to hit that orange fret.

I bought a guitar hero guitar off of Amazon for my 360 so I'm going to get the Metallica one and waste lots of time getting leet on it. JUMP IN THE FIAH

I played the Metallica one on the Wii, and even though I'm not the biggest Metallica fan (not really a fan at all, but bought a couple of albums during the lol formative teenage years. Surprisingly satisfying when you blaze through the solos from some of the stuff on the harder settings. It's hard to explain, but it seems 'mapped' better. Like, some other games the solos feel like random button mashing, but a lot of the Metallica ones just feel more real... if that makes sense and doesn't sound totally lame.

I recently bought a really crappy cheap third party guitar for the wii, and had a fucking BLAST playing world tour - for about an hour. Now the downstrum won't work, only the upstrum. Effectively, this means I can only play on medium difficulty because on the harder difficulties it's sometimes necessary to strum quickly using both up and down.

Mine is a pretty snazzy official flying V one. I was never going to bother shelling out on one but I got some vouchers and you can't argue with free.
Confession of a lame hardcore gamer time: I've not played any of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band games very much at all, and so I'm pretty bad at them. They're the kind of games that people who aren't hardcore gamers are also in to, so lot's of my friends, who only have wiis or just generally don't spend much time playing games, are better than me at them. I now look forward to sonning all comers after I poopsock the hell out of this.

Did this actually come out for PC/Mac? Most under-the-radar Guitar Hero release ever.
― Nhex, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)
^looks like that got pushed indefinitely...
Activision really wants to drive this into the ground, don't they? I realized Guitar Hero 5 is coming out Sept. 1 (beating Beatles RB by a week) but then BAND HERO was just announced - for late November! Looking it up I see that DJ Hero's also slated for October. Is there an audience out there that will actually buy all these?
― Nhex, Friday, 24 July 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)
I guess their theory is that they'll appeal to different audiences? Band hero is the family-friendly version of GH, etc. I'd definitely prefer a less rockist version of GH/RB, so band hero and even lego rock band are pretty appealing ideas to me (although I've not seen setlists for either yet).

Who would have thought that released 18 GH games a year would destroy the franchise?
The Guitar Hero series is finished, at least for now, with no game forthcoming for 2011 and its business unit to be disbanded, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today -- citing declines in the music genre and a desire to focus on higher-margin opportunities in the online space.

i bought the same aerosmith bundle as forks for the same amount! and wow, he is not lying about the difficulty or the number of quality songs.

Guitar Hero was the best guitar video game ever and then they ruined it. I continue to hate the Rock Band controllers and their bullshit similarity to real guitars so people can feel less nerdy about the incredibly nerdy thing they're doing.
