the MARIO KART DS thread

in honour of its imminent release i am proposing that MKDS chatter deserves its own thread! i am really psyched about this! IGN has a review online now and they say:

Nintendo's pulled out all the stops for this "next generation" Mario Kart sequel, and though it's a handheld game, there's nothing small about this design. There's absolutely not a doubt in my mind: Mario Kart DS is the greatest Mario Kart game ever, which, in turn, makes it the greatest Kart racer game ever created.

Mario Kart DS's production value is almost staggering. The development team worked an unbelievable amount of focus in nearly every aspect of this racing design, pushing a huge amount of effort in both the single player experience as well as the multiplayer competition. The gameplay depth is absolutely stunning -- Mario Kart DS is incredibly deep in features, so don't be surprised if you forget about some options because some other mode grabbed you by the crotch and refuses to let go. And that's a good thing.

YAY

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. These "online limitations" are a bit of a worry. But otherwise, man, I'm excited about this.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Yoshi circuit from the cube! Yay! I mean, MKDD is flawed in many ways, but I think that course is maybe my all time favourite mariokart track. And moo moo farm too! And Choco mountain! Woo!

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

sky garden was hard right?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I just tried sky garden again...and yeah, it's a little bugger.

I think I'm going to spend tomorrow brushing up on my MK64 and MKSC.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Is it time yet to start asking who is interested in playing some ILG Mario Kart DS games on wifi?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I need a wifi stick and mario kart ds but i reckon i'll be getting them as soon as possible.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 14 November 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

i'm there

i went back to gba mario kart today... it was weird. not like i remembered it at all

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm down

friday, bitches

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

TOMORROW BITCHES. U S A!

adam (adam), Monday, 14 November 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

if we make this thread registered users only we can post up our DS' MAC addresses? or would it still be dodgy to do that even then?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

TOMORROW!

I can make this registered users only, but that only effects posting, not viewing. It's up to each person, but I think e-mail is probably safer.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

my e-mail is the one below

so... are you buying a DS tomorrow laura?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I already put down the deposit. It's the red one bundled with Mario Kart. I'll get it before work, and it's gonna be pretty hard to go all day without playing it.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

So how does the user system work for Nintendo wifi anyway? Do you find other users by username, or IP, or what?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

There's plenty of detailed info about things like that

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Oops.

There's plenty of detailed info about things like that here.

The Friends option refers to a feature that allows you to keep a list of “friends” by entering their individual 12-digit numeric code into your copy of the game. After both friends have mutually entered each other’s codes, the system will retrieve their information upon next WFC logon and the two of you will be available for play via the Friends option. You can store up to 60 friends at any given time, which should be more than enough. However, the unfortunate thing is that it isn’t possible to select which friend(s) to play with – the system simply traverses your list and then chooses for you.

Grr, you're all going to be good at this before I even get to buy it. I hate living in europe sometimes.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I am sure I'll still be terrible at this game no matter when you get it.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Videogames ate my bank balance.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

However, the unfortunate thing is that it isn’t possible to select which friend(s) to play with – the system simply traverses your list and then chooses for you.

that is very dumb.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes it is, but at the very least you can designate preferred friends who are most likely to be selected.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm really trying to figure this out though--what do you imagine was the thinking behind that? How does it serve anyone to prevent users from choosing their opponents?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

maybe they figured it'd be too complicated for a simple interface--like what if you want to play with friend B, who only wants to play with friends X, Y, and T, and friend T only wants to play with you and friend Y... etc etc etc.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

that can't be right... I've not read anything about that limitation in any of the other reviews or previews I've read... it seems REALLY dumb, if that's the case

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

badly worded as this is, it seems to be confirmation:

... face-offs are limited to automatically matched 4-track grand prix races. (1up.com)

well STONE me

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if there's any chance they could add more functionality if the player response is really bad.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

how would they do that, i wonder? i guess through the network...?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Slocki, what did you think was weird about GBA Mario Kart? I've gone back to playing it over the last few days as well. It's fun, but my perspective is skewed since it's the ONLY version of MK that I've really played.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

i think i had just gotten accustomed to playing double dash on my friend's gamecube so it was weird to step back down to gba technology!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

but now DS'll feel like a step up!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I've been playing Double Dash today, and jeez, it's worse than I remembered it, it feels all floaty and loose and not really like a mariokart game at all really.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

just been watching gameplay videos and it looks GREAT

pretty psyched even if the online matching mechanism sounds a bit silly

I'm sure it'll still be heaps fun

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah and to be honest the handful of people who've posted to this thread already are likely to be the only ones on my list anyway!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Yup

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I might be more excited about the mission mode than about online play, it sounds fantastic.

Have any of you got it yet?

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

it must still be pretty early in america??

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I DEMAND WI-FI ON THE MORNING TRAIN

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I am getting my DS and Mario Kart on lunch break... very soon!

This would have been an unfortunate day for ILX to stay down. Glad it's back.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

wooo!!

unfortunately i have to wait till thursday!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

OH NO

It turns out the girl at Gamespot took my order wrong, and the DS/Mario Kart bundle doesn't come out for another TWO WEEKS!!

Should I bite the bullet and wait for the bundle, or say the hell with it and get a boring, normal DS and buy Mario Kart today?

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

oh shit!!!!

see if you can find a deal--like i said on the other thread, i bought my DS early largely because i found it for $20 off, which is probably around what i'd save. i think they're maybe clearing out the silver/gray-coloured ones?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I think there's maybe a 70% chance I'll give in... I don't think I can justify waiting two weeks for the vanity of a red DS. :(

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

there should be loads of second hand DS's floating around after the launch of the PSP, or at least that's the case here in the UK

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

I just bought a used DS and Mario Kart. It is charging under my desk at work as we speak. I will be home and playing within 2 hours.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

nice!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

How many friends can one person even have online that are playing mario kart at any moment...1?@?!@/

Jdubz (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Got my copy today. Looking forward to being thoroughly shamed by schoolchildren from around the world (and presumably other people in this thread).

I'm actually really excited - this'll be the first time I've played games over the internet since Quake 1, and the first time I've ever done wireless anything. Yay for premature yuppiedom.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

First impressions: This is better than I expected it to be. Coming off Double Dash at least, the slide turns feel different, a little looser, but not a big deal. Played mostly Grand Prix, and the Pinball level in Flower Cup knocked my socks off--rocketing through psychedelic tunnels and swerving around in this giant neon pinball machine with enormous balls and bumpers rolling back and forth around the drivers is wow. Retro Grand Prix is just as fun as the new stuff--It's pretty weird and awesome to be driving on tracks that you remember really well from other games, especially Super Mario Kart with its older graphics. Bowser Castle 2, for example, looks incredibly different now but feels exactly the same. There's a ton of stuff to unlock, and I think it's pretty fair to say that I willingly surrender my life to this game for the foreseeable future.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

can not wait!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

me eithers!!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

me either.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Me neither!

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

laura? any more reports from the front line?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Played a bit of the Mission stuff... Level 1 is mostly precision driving: pick up all the coins, hit all the jumping fish/blocks/etc. I assume it gets more complicated in more advanced levels. I've won a few cups but haven't unlocked any new ones yet despite a 1st place finish. I think it's related to the Grade you get (I haven't broken Grade B), not just your rank.

After a little more practice, the slide turns seem better. Not as crisp as Double Dash, but much more manageable than they first seemed. Sparks turn blue, then orange before they give you a boost, oddly. I wasn't able to match up with anyone on wifi last night; it may be fuxored from the high load after launch.

Anyway, the game is beautiful and so much fun, and clearly a lot of love and effort went into it. Obviously, everyone should buy it. Does anyone else have it yet? Anyone want a match? (Maybe we can come up with some sort of FAP style acronym for this. WAM?)

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

first thing tomorrow i'm picking this up!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i realize i've said that, or some variation of it, at least 5 times already on this thread

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

After a little more practice, the slide turns seem better. Not as crisp as Double Dash, but much more manageable than they first seemed. Sparks turn blue, then orange before they give you a boost, oddly. I wasn't able to match up with anyone on wifi last night; it may be fuxored from the high load after launch.

I was matched up with someone eventually (and at three in the morning, no less), although it took FOREVER and there was a disconnect right before the game started. My guess is that the other guy cut and ran after seeing I was using Toad too.

This game is CRAZY FUCKING FUN. I haven't played a MK game since the SNES, so there's a giant block of newness in this game for me. Learning how to drift gave me flashbacks to learning how to do the manual in Tony Hawk 2, but that's hardly a problem for me.

To repeat: CRAZY FUCKING FUN.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

have i mentioned that i'm looking forward to this?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I am being convinced that I want this.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 17 November 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh Oh Oh, still 8 whole days before I can join in with y'all, NOT FAIR!

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

Unlocked Star and Special Cup last night. Airship Fortress is predictably awesome with ginormous Bullet Bills flying all over the place, and this Rainbow Road might be my favorite ever. Items: Bullet Bills are available as items a la the Chain Chomps of Double Dash, and there's this squid thing that shoots ink all over your screen which I find tremendously annoying and can't wait to do to other people.

Unfortunately, rain may have killed my internet connection last night and I still haven't played it on wifi.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Also, I've come full circle to thinking that these slide turns are TIGHT.

I've been accused of being rude several times for refusing to put down my DS and socialize, but I do not care. This is a ridiculously fun game, and it is not my fault that it is sometimes more fun than other people.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh Oh Oh, still 8 whole days before I can join in with y'all, NOT FAIR!

I'm glad I'm not the only one here counting!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

GUESS WHO'S A HAPPY MAN

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

:-D Congrats slocki!!

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately i can't play till later... but STILL!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I still have 2 more weeks of Management Of Technical Organizations, plus a wedding I'm supposed to be helping Ally plan, plus this stupid job, plus moving house and trying to find tenants for our current apartment, so I Hate You People. Again.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

MOTO?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow - high fives and commiserations all round!!!! (how many times have I posted the same msg to this thread?!)

- me, at ally c's

Ally COZEN (Ally C), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Jeez cozen, for some reason I never even thought about going out and buying an import from a shop, but you've just reminded me that yeah, that's possible. I could go to game focus tomorrow and get it! I bet it's only, ooh, £20 more than it should be. Hmm.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

oh man, one cup in & already i can tell i'm going to be in love. it feels so pleasingly SMOOTH. and i love the mushroom effect, so subtle and satisfying.

my one fear is that it won't be hard enough... but we'll see!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

uh?

xpost

£35 is how much I'm scoring it for

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

haha that's pretty weird cos I was thinking today on the train about posting asking why UKxors aren't just buying an import and so it's kinda like jim has read my mind and posted a pre-emptive, sarky, indignant response to it!! (unless I was drunk last night and actually did post tht message... which I have NO MEMORY OF DOING!)

: )

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

I like "WAM"!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 November 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

ha, I wasn't being sarky and indignant! Although I can see it probably reads like that. I mean, I really will go and get it tomorrow, probably, and I really hadn't thought of doing that before (I always forget gamefocus exists cos normally i import from play-asia). I just feel bad about the fact I'm going to let myself pay a lot more just to get it a week early though. Hence my "hmm".

JimD (JimD), Friday, 18 November 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

my one fear is that it won't be hard enough... but we'll see!

ok i was wrong

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 18 November 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

I want to get an import one too but don't want to go to Glasgow. A predicament.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 18 November 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

i unlocked the leaf cup! i'm really enjoying the retro cups.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 18 November 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

it's cool jim : )

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 November 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've tried ringing Game Focus to see if they've got it, and if so for how much. But they're not answering their phones, and I can't be arsed trekking up there only to find they've not got any in stock. Might try ringing again later, but I guess I'll probably just lump it and wait until friday now.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I bought it the other day and finally got a chance to sit down and play last night for a while. It's pretty great, but most of all (certain aspects of online play excepted) it's really intuitive; drifting and power-sliding take a few races to get used to (much like the manual in Tony Hawk, in fact), but once you get the hang of it, the game really opens up. Some of the new offline-only courses -Rainbow Road, the airship, pinball, and the giant clock - are fantastic.

I wish the friends-list system was more user-friendly and that online play supported 4+ players, more graphically intensive courses, etc, but the fact that it doesn't results in almost no lag or framerate drops as far as I can tell. They really engineered it with latency in mind, and it shows.

In short, CRAZY FUCKING FUN. When do we start exchanging friend codes?

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

There's been some emailing of friend codes, Daniel. I'll forward them to you.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

i've been getting my ass whupped on random international play.

but sadly, my batteries just died & my charger isn't with me. so i may have to... work?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

You can play at work?!?! And I thought I was slick just for surreptitiously posting on ILX.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

freelancer yo!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

what i should be doing is transcribing a very long interview with a parisian filmmaker and then banging it into some recognizable shape.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I bought it! Paid £40, which wasn't so bad. Played the first few cups, and...well, the new tracks seem very nice, but 50cc feels SO slow, it's almost a chore to play though. Only played for about an hour or so though, and we've got people coming over tonight, so I have to stop again now. Boo.

I'll have to join in with the friend code swapping though, later! Woo!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

why you play 50cc? actually the first cup i played i TRIED to play at that speed but got bored before i'd done a lap!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Jon called Mario Kart a "children's" game the other day, which is wrong, except maybe in regards to 50cc. It is indeed the children's table at the Mario Kart party.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

No offense meant to you, JimD. It makes sense to start out slower in the beginning.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Heh. I'm a completist! I want to get 3 stars in EVERYTHING! :)

So yeah, makes more sense to start at the beginning. But you're all right, soon as I get more play time, I'll probably hop into the harder modes.

And ooh, just checked my other email account, I've got all your friend codes already! Ace!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 18 November 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Well, you've got to win gold cups in all the 50cc grands prix in order to unlock other drivers, notably 'Dry Bones', whose bony ass will be the BANE OF YOUR EXISTENCE in later races and also in online play, mark my words.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 19 November 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

dry bones!!

well i've somewhat shamefully already unlocked the 4 other cups in 100cc

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

This thread is so happy!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 19 November 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

saw the ds + game pack in the shop today. WHY I BUY BOOK + CDS INSTEAD?

that guy who pretended to be Ya Kid K that one time (haitch), Sunday, 20 November 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

why i have no import?

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 20 November 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

150cc is EXHILARATING!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 November 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

i hate all of you until the 25th. Then you can be my friends again.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 20 November 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I am having a hell of a time with 150cc. Special Cup is practically impossible to beat with my usual lightweight/fast accelerating combinations; I had a 40-point game going just now with Toad and the Zipper until I got knocked off Rainbow Road by a heavier racer.

Shockingly, I haven't had a very social weekend.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Sunday, 20 November 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty much sick fed up of , well, everything really video-games but mario kart is really great

well done nintendo

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 20 November 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Shockingly, I haven't had a very social weekend.

haha! me neither!

i'm mostly rockin' out with yoshi but i've enjoyed waluigi as well.

hey, does anyone have a clue about how the letter grades are assigned? i assumed a perfect 40 would do ya but i've gotten Bs even with that.

also: car stats. what's the deal? specifically what does the "items" bar represent? efficacy of items you use? chance that you get good ones?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

i hate all of you until the 25th. Then you can be my friends again.

OTM. It's like there's been a massive party we haven't been invited to.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 21 November 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm led to believe that "Items" relates to the frequency with which you receive high-quality power-ups (note that there's an almost direct inverse correlation between Items and Speed when choosing a car).

I really have no idea how letter grades are assigned, although I assume they go along with how long it takes you to finish the course.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 21 November 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i've only ever gotten the magic bullet once!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Me and two friends almost went out and bought DSs and this game today. Then they both decided to wait until next week when the bundle pack comes out. I don't really want the red DS though! So maybe I'll grab it tomorrow.

Any more reports on online play? Is lag an issue? How about the auto matchup thing?

sleep (sleep), Monday, 21 November 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Sleep, if you get the bundle pack and would prefer a grey DS I'd be happy to trade you!

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 21 November 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

oh! that would be really cool.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 21 November 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

Wait, you're in brooklyn right? I'm upstate but I SHOULD be in the city for the first weekend of december. I'll have more info next week.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 21 November 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

I am in Brooklyn! And I'd be thrilled to get the red DS. Let me know. If you come down maybe we can go a couple rounds of Mario Kart too.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 21 November 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Is lag an issue?

It is a bit, yeah...I'm quite often noticing other players juttering from side to side in unrealistic ways, which reminds me of online play in the original Quake, when the game used to predict where your opponents would be in between the actual position updates, which generally made them jerk around weirdly.

Also, I'm finding WFC to be pretty flaky - maybe it's just cos I'm in the UK and 99% of the other players, so far, are US...but I rarely manage to get a four player game (I think I've only had one), mostly I'm just being fixed up with one-on-one races.

And...hmm, the main game. I don't want to sound like I'm saying "I R TEH MK M4st3r!!!", but I'm finding 150cc too easy, I'm sailing through it, getting golds in almost all the cups first time round. The only times I've had make second attempts at any of them have been in blue-shell-on-the-finish line incidents. I don't want to have clocked this game within 6 hours of play, I'm enjoying it too much...but it looks like I will have done. Which is the problem I've had with SO many recent nintendo games (hello Waverace GC, 1080 GC, MK DD, etc).

I'm not really comfortable with the AI either...I'm never really being outdriven, I'm generally finding I'm a good half lap in front by the third lap, even in 150cc, and the only way I'm being beaten is with items, rather than opponent skill. I know mariokart has always been about skanky AI, to some extent, but at least they used to keep up with your pace, artificially. Now they stay back, but hit you with blue shells until you're buggered (or else they don't even do that, and let you win too easily).

Moan moan moan! Three days and the honeymoosn is already over! :/

JimD (JimD), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, just noticed this - re: the "items" ranking on different carts, well, it makes a HUGE difference when you're time trialling - if your items ranking is bad, you only get one mushroom over your three laps! You need a decent rating to get all three.

Anyway, THE ILX MARIOKART DS TIME TRIAL CHALLENGE starts here! Your time to beat, on Yoshi Circuit, is 1:55:105 (which was good enough to release the staff ghost, but still about 7 seconds too slow to beat it). I used Donkey Kong, in the "ROB-LGS" cart. Bring it!

Also, we should try and timetable some online play, I've not managed to actually find any of you guys online yet. Anyone fancy a race tonight? At, say, 8 or 9, EST?

JimD (JimD), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I will also be in the city the first weekend in December. Mario Kart FAP!

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I will also be in the city the first weekend in December. Mario Kart FAP!

Yes!

Also JimD, clearly you need to convince your friends to buy Mario Kart, or ask for it as a holiday gift. Double Dash used to be great fun to put on when friends came over for drinks... worthy real life opponents + alcohol = true challenge

I'll probably be on tonight around 8 or 9 EST, and I'd be glad to play a game though I have a feeling you might school me.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Ha, yeah...I've got friends who'll be buying it first thing on friday. But it's still not officially out here yet, don't forget.

And tonight, raa! Let's aim for 8 then, which should be 1am GMT I think. Anyone else fancy joining us?

JimD (JimD), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I should get home tonight about 8:30 or so. I have a ton of work to do tonight, but I'll try to jump in for a game or two, assuming my wireless connection's up.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

hey babe I wanna see your emblem

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Laura: Awesome, I just preordered. I would totally be down for some games.

Jim: Ahh... hopefully most of the lag is due to that cross-atlantic jump.

Mario Kart FAP sounds fun too!

sleep (sleep), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

where are all of you hiding?

I was just on and there was no-one around

also, jim you must be a MK fiend because I'm finding 150cc wicked hard

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

cozen!! get on again!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

now!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

OK gimme five!!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

email me when you're ready to go! or just announce it here!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

OMG OMG

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

If I could get wifi at work I would totally hide out in the supply room and join you guys.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

OMG

so great!!!

as I said to slutsguts in e-mail:

haha absolutely ridiculous and classic!!

the first choco mountain race on the third leg was INTENSE to the wire stuff

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

in case anyone is wondering the results:

1.
cozen 35
slutsky 25

2.
slutsky 40
cozen 20

3.
slutsky 30
cozen 30

TIE!!!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

SO
MUCH
FUN

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

it was really insanely exciting! i was like... nervous and stuff!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

dude even cracks jokes playing mario kart

SNES mario circuit 1 indeed!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I said 8 EST, not 8 GMT, Boo, I've missed all the fun. :)

I've clocked 150cc now. Mirror feels quite a lot harder though! Thankfully.

I'll have a look at WFC now and see if any of you are still there...

JimD (JimD), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i wish there was a mode to chat or at least rudimentally communicate in-between races

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

voice communication, surely

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah... seriously!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I was reading about this on www.nintendowifi.com, and they inply that things like that are all possible, it's just down to the individual game developers whether they include them or not. I get the impression WFC only exists to set up the matches, and then once you've got your opponents, everything runs p2p.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

quibbles aside it is still marvellous fun of course.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Anyone on?

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, can't you see me? my ds says it's searching for friends... :/

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Still nothing? Mine's still peeping away, looking for people, but hasn't found anyone. This is disappointing!

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I went and did some regional races when i saw no one on, but my DS is once again bleating for friends.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

ooh, I've got a little flashing "your friend is looking for you" icon now. But it's still not actually hooking us up!

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

I have just beaten Laura. Has everyone else registered our friend codes? That might be the problem.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Yep, you're both on my list. I think me being in the UK might be the problem. Boo.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

No, I got the little icon thing during the last race. Should we quit and try to get it going again?

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

well, mine's still sitting here and looking for you....so yep, maybe if you restart I'll find you this time. But don't worry too much about it, if we can't get it working then hey, it's getting past my bedtime anyway. :)

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Let's try this again.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I have just beaten Laura. Has everyone else registered our friend codes? That might be the problem.
-- d4niel coh3n

Dude, we tied!

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I meant the first race! Fuck a Rainbow Road.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, you're not coming up, JimD.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

ok, this is kinda stupid, on the same screen, at the same time, my ds is saying "searching for opponents" AND flashing the "your friends are looking for you!" icon. If it can see you, why doesn't it put me in a race with you! Grr, I'm pretty unimpressed, nintendo.

Anyway, bugger it, I'm off to bed. Thanks for trying though, guys!

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Likewise, that's it for me. I've got to get serious about this paper.

(So this game seriously needs some sort of voice/chat application, if that wasn't already clear.)

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

OK, I have to go eat dinner now before I fall down. Final score:

1.
laurah 30
dcohen 30

2. (disconnected before 4th game)
laurah 25
dcohen 20

3.
laurah 30
dcohen 30

That was really fun, so so so much better than playing against AI! I might be back on later too.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Totally fun. My favorite moment: neck-and-neck toward the end of the third lap in Delfino Square, where I was so worried about getting the inside track on the last curve that I cut the ramp, slammed into a giant pillar in mid-air, and sank in the river.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Strangely, I had the most fun on Mario Circuit 1 SNES. I've played that track so much that every single slide turn feels like home to me. Baby Park is way more fun as a clusterfuck, and loses some of the chaos with only 2 players.

My favorite moments were the precision item drops when I was driving in front. It's waaay more satisfying to get someone with a banana or a green shell than the red or spiny heat-seekers.

Another good moment was on... what was it, Luigi Circuit? When a blue spiny shell caught up to me at the end blew my ass off the map inches from the finish line, and you sped right by me into first. If there had been a voice feature at that point, you would have heard some not insignificant profanity!

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I got me some Mario Kart. Just played a couple matches with some random people. Got the DS hand pain going now but loving it.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

(So this game seriously needs some sort of voice/chat application, if that wasn't already clear.)

It does have Pictochat or an equivalent though, right? I mean, as long as I can draw knobs for my friends I'll be happy.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've just pre-ordered Mario Kart and the USB adapter! Roll on Friday, and if they aren't at my door on Friday morning heads will roll (my own, into my hands, sobbing).

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

LAURA STOP LEAVING OUR WIFI UNLOCKED

Occam's Reznor (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

"unlock my wi-fi, baby"

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure whether to lock it under the longer or shorter password anymore! Let me know by e-mail. xpost

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

wi-fi transport level encrypt is balls anyway Jon, wtf

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Tom, if you have a good long WPA password, it is really hard to crack.

Occam's Reznor (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

my point is SO WHAT
SSL still works, and it's better!
wifi crypto is tinfoil helmet

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I laff, though, that the DS has that big RSA SECURED logo on the bottom!
WE ARE ASYMMETRICALLY LOCKED DOWN TO PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT BY FRIEND CODE

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Have there been cases of exploitation of open wifi to steal personal info? Dsniff on open networks is scary O_o

Occam's Reznor (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

you could conceivably sit on somebody using gmail over wifi and find out their typical boring day-to-day life + what kind of websites they go to but frankly that's been true since the days when we were all plugged into a dorm hub via UTP back in 1997

the most important thing about sniffing plaintext traffic is that it's so boring it makes you want to cry

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Anyway Mario Kart DS looks like a lot of fun! I'm excited!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Except gmail uses HTTPS!!!!

Occam's Reznor (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

only for the logon, by default. you have to make sure your addressbar is yellow. I mean uh Racing around!!! Yoshi!!! Blue Shells!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Racing around!!! Yoshi!!! Blue Shells!

I don't think I can handle anticipating a game this much. I'm so tempted to go out for a joyride chucking bananas out of the windows.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Anyone up for a game tonight?

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

i'm up for one right now!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

tonight i'm busy though!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

:( I work until 6.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm up for tonight. One more cup in mirror mode!

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I'M UP. I SUCK THOUGH.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm up too. let's rock!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

adam are you sure you sent out the right friend code? my ds seems to think it is not accurate.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

According to the "Your friend code is..." screen, yup. Hmm...

adam (adam), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

maybe we need to be online at the same time for it to "click" or something.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/niwifi/nintendos-wifi-gets-early-big-numbers-138705.php

Nintendo hit the world with some pretty exciting online numbers this morning. In the first week since Mario Kart DS’ release, 45 percent of the game’s owners have already played the game online.

The game hit stores on Monday, Nov. 14 and by Sunday night more than 112,000 people in the U.S. had purchased the game. Of those, about 52,000 users logged into NiWiFi and got their game on, Nintendo says.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Sorry for not showing up last night Daniel... I ended up not very sober

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

It's fine. I ended up getting suckered into going and watching basketball all night in a terrifying college bar. No loss.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Home early for a half day-- anyone want to waste some time?

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

take it you're all off doing something interesting huh

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

It's just gone midnight. This game is officially out tomorrow! Yet the money hasn't been taken out of my account. Should I cancel the order and buy it from a brick and mortar shop on Friday?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 24 November 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

if anyone wants to rock it today hit me up

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Tomorrow....! I hope people are stocking the USB stick.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I've got a friend who ordered a UK copy plus the USB dongle from http://www.gameplay.com/ yesterday, at about 10am, and had both delievered this morning, a day before official release. So I guess they're a good place to try if you're after one fast.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

does anybody know how to get to the picture drawing menu again? where you can create your little personalized icon?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

From the main menu, choose options, then edit, then emblem.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

thx jim!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I like my emblem!

: )

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

i made a new one!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I've got a half an hour now before turkey... and then after 4 EST

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, after 4:00 I think I'll be ready to play as well.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Right, I got all my GP golds two days ago, and finished mission mode (admittedly without getting maximum ratings for all of them, yet) about an hour after that. So now I'm meant to be relying on online play for my fun, right? Except I've failed to hook up with anyone on my transatlantic friend list, and the people in the UK I know who now have the game are finding it impossible to set up their USB dongles. So, my standard MK online experince tends to go like this:

1 - log on to WFC (approx 30 secs)

2 - wait for it to find me an opponent (approx 1 min)

3 - that opponent vanishes again, wait for it to find me another opponent (approx 1 min)

4 - get into a head to head race (cos there apparently aren't enough people in the world for WFC to find me a 3 or 4 player race)

5 - win or lose that race, almost always as a result of a blue-shell-on-the-line incident, cos nintnedo clearly didn't play-test two player modes enough to realise that blue shells really needed to be removed when there's only two of you, otherwise the whole game is determined by luck...whoever gets the first blue shell is going to hold onto it until the end then use it to win.

6 - if I lost, have my opponent quit before the end of the second race
because most people online appear to be petulant little twats who can't stand being beaten.

7 - goto 2 (although I've usually given up waiting by the time I get to 3 again)

I had really high expectations for mariokart online, but it's just a big fat disappointment.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

jimd do you hate fun?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Is this the thread where I bitch about RAINBOW ROAD? FUCK YOU RAINBOW ROAD. ALSO FUCK PEOPLE WHO SELECT RAINBOW ROAD IN MULTIPLAYER.

adam (adam), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE FUN! I just wish I was having any. :(

JimD (JimD), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Okay i bought this bastard and the stupid nintendo wi-fi usb cable either does not exist or they just don't have it. Most shops looked at me like i was an idiot for believing in it's existence they then pointed me to a poster about wi-fi connectivitiy which specifically stated that there would be a usb cable to enable wi-fi if you didn't have a wireless network. After i showed them that part they would shrug and kind of try and get rid of me. I hate my wireful house. i am abt to check amazon and places for this elusive 'dongle'.

My rageth boil over so much i haven't actually tried the game yet.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BVAPFI/ref=pd_sim_vg_dp_1/203-5799984-8853529

okay if someone could just maybe confirm this is what i need i wld be thankful. I'm almost certain it is though since it's called a nintendo wi-fi usb connector. I am just still a little frazzled from having to deal with so many bad shopkeepers.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

That's the one, as far as I can tell.

Also, I'm going to be online for a while this afternoon EST if anyone wants a game.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Jeffrey so OTFM! I went all over today to get one, and nothing. It's as if there's been some kind of Xbox 360 intervention to stop this thing selling. GAME said they were supposed to have a delivery of them today with the game, but the deliverymen "forgot" them. Well done! They may, or may not, have some tomorrow. If you've not bought that one from Amazon yet, check out GAME if there's one around you, as they might do them.

This game though... cor! I don't think I've ever had as much fun as on Waluigi Pinball.

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Game was one of the places i tried but it was in a very small town and they don't really know what they're talking about. I could try Glasgow but am being too reclusive fr the 1 hr of travelling needed. I am saving playing the game fr a huge bedtime session tonight.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

My Time Trial Challenge best time so far: 1:56:986! Getting closer.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

anyone around?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 25 November 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Is this the thread where I bitch about RAINBOW ROAD? FUCK YOU RAINBOW ROAD. ALSO FUCK PEOPLE WHO SELECT RAINBOW ROAD IN MULTIPLAYER.
-- adam (hexenductio...), November 25th, 2005 11:15 AM.

I am this person.

And I agree about the blue shells, I think making the races so subject to luck makes things more frustrating and doesn't add to the fun. Is there any chance they might make changes to the gameplay at some point?

laurrrah (orion), Friday, 25 November 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Friend: hey hey
Me: Hey!
Friend: how are you doing?
Me: Good thanks! you?
Friend: great
Friend: guess what i got?
Me: the same thing as me I hope!
Friend: what did you get?
Me: MARIO KART!
Friend: AWSOME!!!
Friend: welll i got steel battleian
Friend: for the xbox

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 25 November 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

haha. i have the same friend. i made a blog about him once.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 25 November 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah, x-posts, do you think it's possible they can patch it over the nintendo network?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 26 November 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I think even if it's possible (which I doubt anyway), then it's not the kind of thing nintendo would do. They're the sort of company who release newly designed versions of their consoles a year or so after the original, and get everyone to buy the same thing again...so I reckon they're also the sort of company who'd rather just release a new, improved verion of MK than patch the old one.

Also, patching would presumably cause all the kinds of tech issues (different users with different versions, people powering off halfway through a rom flash and ruining their cartridges, etc) that WFC seems to be designed to avoid. I don't think they'd risk their ultra-simplicity for just a wee gameplay improvement.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 26 November 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Blue shells aren't just pure luck though, are they? It's all about stopping the little slot-machine type thing at the right time when you pick up a box! That said, I never get blue shells, it's always bananas.

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 26 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

it is??

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

i thought you couldn't stop the thing in this version of mario kart!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Hello, chums!

Be my friend? 094549383766!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 26 November 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

5th of december is the first time i can get a wi-fi connector. i hate you all.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

xxpost

Yeah, I was under the impression that you don't have the ability to influence the item selection--I've never seen it respond to any button pressing. I think the item slot is mostly luck, although being way behind other players seems to increase your likelihood of drawing a blue shell, bullet bill, or golden mushroom.

Anyone want a match?

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Does a thread used entirely for friend codes sound like a good idea to anyone else?

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

We were e-mailing each other off board. Personally I like that method because I'm paranoid, but to each his own. I'll forward the mails to you.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, thanks!

I just figured that seeing as the codes need to be *shared* to be active in any way that it was nothing to be paranoid about. But still, e-mails a-go-go!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Laura, I'm up for a game if you're still on! My code should be in the email.

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Still there?

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 26 November 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I am jealous! Everyone stop playing until I get my copy, thanks.

Lemmy Caution (sleep), Saturday, 26 November 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

My thumb hurts real bad.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 27 November 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Can we send the friend code email around again? I think I only have Laura's and someone else's (s1ocki?) from when we sent it around originally.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Also if anyone wants to play my DS will be attempting to detect friends for the next hour.

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

ooh, this is within the nest hour, isn't it? I'm DRUNK, but raa, I'll see if I can find you.

I don't like the idea of any friend code offshoot threads, if only cos, as far as I know, this is the most popular ILG thread so far, and that seems right to me. So I want all discussion to stay here, and make it even bigger. :)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

oh ho! me vs laura round one - 30 points each, tie! This has a) restored my faith in WFC, and b) given me nuff respect for laura's course choices, and c) shamed me a bit. :)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 27 November 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Yay! Sorry to cut out after one game, Jim, but I'm being called to obligatory family time. I'm happy to tie you--and I'm sure alcohol was a bit of a handicap.

Oh, and hahaha when you started kicking my ass on Baby Park I started shouting "NO! NO NO NO!" and my father sprinted down from the other side of the house thinking I was being attacked or something.

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 27 November 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Also, my "I'm drunk" protestations are actually worth shit, it felt like a totally fair fight. I mean, I did a much better job of yoshi circuit just now than I've ever done sober. I think drunken MK might just be the way forward...

xpost LOL!! :)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 27 November 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

this game is so so so good. (no wfc play for me though, sadly.)

turboalbino (haitch), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

i printed pictures of the usb wi-fi connection and have my extended family on a rampage across scotland to find one for me. amazon says they'll take 1-2 weeks for delivery. That is too long. The single player is still incredible though and i'm finding 150cc kinda challenging and retro cups = classic but i need teh multiplayer wi-fi love.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Jeffrey, I got mine from Gameplay.com (as suggested above) on Saturday and it came in the post today. The wait was still agonizing, but at least I've got one now! I really don't understand why more shops aren't stocking these. Good luck finding one :)

If anyone wants to play at any point today, I'm up for it!

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Today is my last day of tryings shops and then i will do the gameplay.com Most shops here don't even know of it's existence and acted like i was teh fool. It was nice to show them a picture of it after they told me it didn't exist but still didn't help to get one.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I know! I just don't get it. How is this wifi lark supposed to catch on if no one actually knows about it/stocks it? The only person I could actually get a decent answer out of was a nice bloke in Game who wanted one too and seemed pretty upset that they didn't have them yet.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

To be fair to the shops, nintendo themselves don't seem to care much about wifi here either - their site isn't even up yet!

Oh, and THE ILX MARIOKART DS TIME TRIAL CHALLENGE: I've knocked a couple of seconds off my yoshi circuit time, new record to beat is 1:53:013.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's mental. Maybe they're waiting for Metroid or something (and treating Mario Kart as a sort of test). People who turn their DS just before you beat them on WFC - classic or dud?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I discovered yesterday that the predictive text on my phone now rates the word KART as more common than the word LAST, so my friends get to enjoy puzzling messages telling them what I great time I had kart night.

I might be up for a match tonight if people are around.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Fantastic, I'm still eager to try this out with ilxors. Perhaps we could do a 4-player! Does that work well with friends?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to be out, but should be home fairly early, so yeah, I might be able to join you. What time?

Haven't managed a 4P friends match yet, I've only had 1-on-1s...

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Laura: People whose names come up as science fiction villain names when you use predictive text.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I get home a bit after 7... maybe around 8 PM EST? I can be flexible though.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Just picked it up! I should be around to play at 8. I'll send my friend code when I get it.

Lemmy Caution (sleep), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

yay xpost

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I? WTF? I meant to say I heart this game and love the anonymity of multiplayer (though I can see why others wouldn't). I played against someone for about an hour and a half and it was brilliant. I can only assume they enjoyed it as much as I did because they didn't log off! I think the ability to chat would ruin the fun a little, and would reduce people to calling eachother n00bs and hackers. It's like Depeche Mode song, right?

I'm well up for 8!

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I love this game. I won't be around at 8 due to America's Next Top Model related issues though. I STILL haven't played against any ILx types.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Hello sleep!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

and hello JimD!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Ha, that was fun! Especially the end of that last mario circuit race...me blue shelling the both of us was fantastically stupid.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 1 December 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Brilliant! So much fun! That blue shell made my night. Sorry about my blue-shell-on-the-finishing-line earlier on, sleep! If it's any consolation I felt like an absolute arsehole afterwards.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

haha! No, that was a lot of fun, despite the fact that I lost every time! Sorry I dropped suddenly, I kind of lost track of time and was way late for something.

Lemmy Caution (sleep), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

So, who wants a game tonight?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I do, and this time I will actually show up instead of being sidetracked by Real Life. Anyone else?

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

what time? and what time zone are you in, melton?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

anyone on now?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm GMT, the same as you right? And if you're still about I'm more than up for a game.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

i'm EST! and i'm good to go!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I had no idea! I'm connecting now, so you should see me any moment.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

oh man that baby circuit was so close

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

hahaha so amazing.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Hah, you got lucky! (on every race)

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

sorry i couldn't keep playing! but "real" "work" called!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

oh man, wifimariokart makes me JITTERY! i feel like i just had a shot of espresso!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh but I left my DS at a friends house...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 1 December 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh! I can see friends, but it's not finding you! (Whoever you are, oh mysterious mario karter)

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 2 December 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Ha, that's me...but yeah, it's failing to match us up. Grr.

Ah well. Look at this!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Wow! I'd give that a go, but it looks missions. Do you like my Bod? (not trying flirt with you)

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Great games, melton! Stop being so good.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 2 December 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

more fun with Mario Kart

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 2 December 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else had trouble with friend codes when changing internet connections? I tried to play last night, but my ds wasn't detecting any friend codes... later I figured out I had to put them all back in, and had to do the same thing when I used another internet connection over Thanksgiving break. PITA. Is there a way to make them stick?

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 2 December 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Great games, melton! Stop being so good.

Haha, judging from your repeated picking of levels with "Choco" in the name, you've already found my weakness (though Figure 8 Circuit would be a guaranteed win against me). Fantastic games :)

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Laura, I haven't had any problems with that and I play it on two connections. That said, one of them's the USB stick so I'm not sure if it counts. Surely this can't be a common problem though, because aren't we supposed to be able to connect from any wi-fi hotspot (eg. mcdonalds)? Hope you don't have any more problems, we're yet to race!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I'll get this fixed somehow. I'm really looking forward to racing you, and sleep, and slocki, and cozen if we are ever online at the same time.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm searching now, if any of you bored Americans/insomiac Britishes are up for a game!

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 3 December 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

I have been too busy to play MK

: /

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I don't know why I decided to get a life right after Mario Kart came out. :(

I picked up Super Mario Kart for SNES last night for old times' sake, and I was kinda shocked. It's always been one of my favorite games of all time and therefore surrounded by a halo of light in my mind, but honestly, it doesn't compare to the DS version. The play control is total shit, the slide turns are loose and unwieldy, and the red shells are incredibly stupid--they seek your enemies in straight lines and barely corner at all. I found it incredibly hard to go back and pick this up. I think it even would have been easier if it were a totally different game that I were playing for the first time, because I keep wanting to apply the Double Dash/DS skill sets that tragically don't seem to translate that well at all. The only thing I really miss about SNES now is the feather item and Battle Track 4.

It's possible I'm just demoralized that I can't play one of my favorites games well anymore, but I think the DS is very simply much, much better when you get your nostalgia out of the way.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 3 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh no! Mario Kart's one of those SNES games I don't have but really should do, and had planned to get a boxed copy for myself for Christmas. I know exactly what you mean, so I might go for something else instead (Final Fight for Mega CD perhaps?). Perhaps I should have a go on Mario Kart 64 tonight and see how it compares to the DS version.

Is anyone up for a WFC tonight?

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I WILL PLAY

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Woo! Is 8pm EST/1am GTM good? I rather like playing at this time, as I'm becoming accustomed to playing the DS in bed.

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 4 December 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Sleep and I hung out this weekend and traded DSs, so if you've got our codes in your DS, change our names.

I'm kind of in love with my new red DS. I wouldn't shut up about it all night last night.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

haha! how come?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

because she's in love with it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

see I didn't get that joke first time it was made! but now I do!!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't even joking, though! I was hanging out with my friends that night getting really high and playing Pinbot, and I just kept saying over and over how beautiful the DS was, and wanting to touch it and play it and watch other people play it.

Which sounds kind of creepy when I say it out loud!

Laurah (laurah), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Laura I'm glad you like it! I bet you got my terrible multiplayer record along with my friend code when we traded though, hah.

pinbot = rad

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

anyone online?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki, I'll play at like 7:30pm EST if you're still around.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i will be :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

i'll try though!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I'll be up for 7:30, for sure. Hopefully we can do three player!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

shit, i'm visiting my parents and couldn't find my dad's WEP key or router pw. fixed now though.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I've left this thing running since about 7:30 and still haven't seen you! No joy?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

oh jeez, apparently it assigned me a totally new friend code, not laura's old one. i just noticed.

i'll send the email around again.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Anybody still on? I could go for a game or two.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

OK who do I email my friend code to, to get in on this motherfucker and begin dominating all of you (In a chummy way)?

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh! How did Laura do this before? If you send it to me, I could forward it to everyone else including you, to add you to the list. Is that right?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Sending now, Mr. Mowbray. I think you have to send me everyone else's friend code too, so I can add them to my list?

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, you said you'd send me everyone else's codes, didn't you? I feel foolish now.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Righty ho, I think I've done it (though I'm never sure with gmail). I hope you got all the codes in that email.

I don't suppose you're still about and free for a game are you? I really could do with some sleep (it's almost 6am!) and Mario Kart's the only surefire way to get me into bed and comfortable enough not to get up again.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Whoops. Sorry, didn't see your last message 'til this morning. Sorry I missed you. I did get the codes though, so the mayhem can commence this evening. Thanks!

I'm trying to swear off playing Mario Kart in bed. I'm beginning to see blue shells and bananas when I close my eyes. Doesn't make for restful slumber.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Finally got the damn usb access point through and then i spent hours trying to get round error code 52003: couldn't detect my I.P address. I eventually had to uninstall zonealarm and protowall but now i am up and running and don't think nintendo are evil anymore.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh, do you have a new friend code after swapping DSes too, Laura?

So glad you managed to get your USB stick at long last Jeffrey! Now I don't have to stay up all night to play Mario Kart with ilx0rs.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I likely have a new friend code and will e-mail it out as soon as I get up and running around 7!

I had a match earlier where I had to run upstairs to get my charger and plug it in. I kind of missed the start of the race by a bit... but I still came 2nd! Yay!

I like having all these real world excuses as well.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Gah! I fell in teh water!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

I found nobody and I was sad.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh sleep, we have a friend waiting, shall we try three player?

xpost! is it you?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

eeee! it will be if you hold on!

HOLD ON!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

ahh now i can't find anyone

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Me neither! I can find, but not match up :(

Oh wait, something's happening!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm lookin, I'm lookin! Can't anybody see me?

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

YOU again, sleep! I can't see you searching suedey, but I'm sure you're on my list!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Nooooo!

I must play! Maybe I put the codes in wrong...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I continue my search in vain...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Well, didn't I see you before?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure I have you're friend codes, actually! I am all a muddle.

Mail 'em over!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Wait wait, I see searching again, but I'm in a game with Jeffrey! And he's winning!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I wish we had pictochat :(

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

ayayay!

Some chat on this service would be so useful... I have sleep's friend code for defs! It might connect all four of us if we're lucky!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Also: not being able to let searching friend folk know yr in a game - dead annoying.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Tie! Where are the others hiding?

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

We're in a game! We'll try 3 player asap!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Speed it up, guys!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

THERE COULD BE FOUR OF US

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha amazing! You only won Choco Mountain because I'm retarded.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand why it hates finding multiple people.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

It hates us all.

I had a four player earlier, though. It was nice. Am searching now!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

This really is hard to set up a match, though. Unless its the matches it inexplicably wants to set you up with, which may or may not include the people you wish to play.

Yeah!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh god! I just restarted (sorry Jeffrey), I'll be right there! Are there still four of us?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I got two! Yeah!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

omg 4way

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

OH OH

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

WOW.
WOW.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

woohoo.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, how many shells on the finish line you guys?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHA
super harsh

i love it.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

haaa

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Suedey soooo hacks.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Hacks! Whuh?

I've gotta call it a night guys! It's been awesome!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

*too hyperactive to sleep*

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Anyone up? Don't make me play against random permaboosting yahoos with penis avatars, please!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, really amazing. I just saw searching, was that you?

(Well done sleep, when did you get so good?)

xpost! I'm about!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

OO I'M THERE DUDE

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

IT'S ON

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Baby Park again, you fiend

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, I AM Baby Park! (I am also a wanker who drops blue shells at the finish line, two games in a row.)

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Patrick, you unspeakable arse!

In my defence, that was the first time I'd driven as R.O.B., only having unlocked him this afternoon. He handles totally differently than my man Luigi. Gotta go to bed now, looking forward to humiliating you in future. Well played sir!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

Hah, you totally deserved to win Luigi's Mansion after the two previous races (which you also deserved to win).

I'm ashamed to say I haven't unlocked R.O.B yet - it's that bloody mirror Special Cup that gets me! I still play as Toad, but only because I like him as a character (I love his creepy exorcist voice when you blast someone with a blue shell). I have no doubt that I'd probably be better off with a greener character like Luigi or Yoshi.

Great games everyone! I'd best get practising.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

ROB is so hard to play!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

The GOD DAMNED mirror Rainbow Road is brutal, I had an entire week of getting 1st place in the other three races, then coming dead last in Rainbow Road after getting knocked off the frigging track in the middle of the loop-de-loop before I finally lucked out today. Rainbow Road is the most infuriating track ever, closely followed by Choco Island 2.

I probably shouldn't have given you this information.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

I know! I can't stand it. Thank you Bowser/Donkey Kong, for sending me flying off the track every time I so much as think about driving near you. WTF. I don't think I had this much trouble with the N64 version, and that had a big old fish/bullet monster swimming down the middle of the track!

I'm going to give it a go in a moment when I go to bed. Nothing like going to sleep bitter and frustrated.

Also, why no Waluigi Pinball and Banshee Boardwalk in WFC? They're my favourite tracks. Sure, they're big - but so are Wario Stadium and Rainbow Road, and they're bloody awful!

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

i think pinball is too complicated for wfc, what with the pinballs and all. same thing with the ship one. which is too bad because they rule!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 December 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they seem to have excluded from online play any track that has a lot of moving parts in it - the free-roaming chain chomps in Peach Gardens, the buses and cars in Shroom Ridge and Mushroom Bridge, the gears in Tick Tock Clock, etc. I'm already hoping they'll do a sequel, or maybe just an expansion pack with more tracks that plugs into the GBA slot. If I'm forced to race on Figure 8 Circuit one more time I think I'll scream.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

expansion pack would be RAD RAD RAD

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

retort pouch OTM re: Figure 8 Circuit. I'd even rather play Rainbow Road.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

melton otm re: retort pouch being otm.

i don't mind rainbow road though! it's a thrill

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I also am a big fan of Rainbow Road. I imagine that it bites pretty hard if you tend to stray off the track or can't control your steering during turbos, though.

If you play multiplayer (not wifi), you are able to get the fun tracks like Airship Fortress and Waluigi Pinball. Reasons to make your friends get a DS.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Only one of my DS friends has Mario Kart, but yeah, we're big Waluigi Pinball fans. I don't mind Rainbow Road so much against ilxors, but against the computer it's unbearably frustrating (at least, playing as Toad it is).

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i'll ever have a friend with a DS unless antexit finally wises up!

(he's my only video game friend)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

you mean your only friend!!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

(sorry)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 8 December 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

When I finish this bottle of wine, I'm going to beat you all!

If you're, y'know, there.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 8 December 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Pffft. Bring it on.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

I WILL DESTROY YOU

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Still playing? I'm logging on now.

Figure 8 isn't so bad, you can just treat it as snaking practice.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 9 December 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I am around.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 9 December 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm here!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, I am too!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

OH YES

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

I just owned^W finished racing with Jeffrey - let's hope we can get a 3-player race going

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

I went for a pee, and when I came back, I was mario :(

Are you guys up for another game after this? I hate him!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Sure thing!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

BOW DOWN!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I hate you, Mario! (sore loser)

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I preferred you when you were Mario.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Baby Park, go on then...

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahaha

I gotta say, that blue shell/bomb one-two was beautiful. Great races guys. I gotta deal with some kitchen bizness, I may be back.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Great games! Sorry I had to leave Jeffrey, if either of you are about a little bit later post on here and hopefully I'll see you!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

i might be about later if i don't fall asleep. so good.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Pffft.

Would bet you allz byeat i deankz the alxohoola"

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Suedey! I'm up for another 15 mins or so. Please let me waste you?

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha

God damn it Jeffrey, you really love the shit out of that Mario Circuit 1 track, don't you? Guh, you kicked my ass.

My battery is nearly dead, and I must sleep now. I will have my revenge tomorrow!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

snes mario circuit one. love it. i didn't even mean to choose mario, i had my ds on friend finding fr hours just to see if anyone popped on and kinda forgot about it and watched buffy then randomly looked at the exact moment our game started up. bad story, good game.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

play MK:DS offline tracks online!!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 9 December 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

OMG!!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 9 December 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

AND I just got R.O.B!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 9 December 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

wowee!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 December 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Anyone around for a game?

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I've got j-u-s-t enough time for one game, if we can find each other..

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh no! Another Mario Circuit 1 fan!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, so close!

Thanks Laura! Gotta run but I may be back later.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

A tie! I started off Mario Circuit by heading directly off the track because I was distracted by Jon's blasting itunes signature! Good game, though.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

anyone else?

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Waaay! And I just wiped it (I think)!

Anyone up for a game tonight?

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 11 December 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

i am about just now.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 11 December 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

that's me out for now while i go smoke and stuff. might be back in a bit though. good games, i still don't have that robot thing, i need to play single player more.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 11 December 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Great games! I think I'm converted from Toad now that I've played as the robot in the little JCB digger. I really felt your pain on Delfino Square in our first game when I was chucking those green shells back at you and seemingly hitting you every time. Total luck!

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 11 December 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

Anyone want to play?

sleep (sleep), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Sure thing! Are you still about?

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

haha, so close! So many blue shells too!

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

nice move at the end there!

sleep (sleep), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha thanks a lot Lakitu. Thanks a fucking lot.

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Great games, melton! Stop being so good.

-- sleep (enemy.air...), December 2nd, 2005 3:56 AM.

And the same to you :)

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

thanks! good games. i'll be around to play later.

sleep (sleep), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Why is everyone who plays this online such a bloody goober? Seriously, is it worth switching off your DS after I win a race fairly-and-squarely, only to have to spend five minutes rebooting and starting up WFC again? I had three games in bed last night and in every one the person on the other end disconnected just as I crossed the finish line of the first race. If you can't handle losing, don't play online!

It should lock up the DS so you can't turn off the power until the end of the game, really. At least that way, if they give up you can still get your rightfully-won point.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 12 December 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

it should call your mother if you do that

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 12 December 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

You can at least feel assured that you are superior to them in both Mario Kart and in life.

I understand not wanting to screw people with poor connections (I've disconnected in the middle of races from bad wifi before) but it would be nice to have an option to choose only games/opponents where quitting is penalized. Like if there could be some sort of quitting rating... of course regular people will occasionally quit by accident, but the assholes would become readily apparent.

Maybe the answer to all of this is to keep playing ILXors. We're all honest, at least.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 12 December 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah, yeah, sure we are!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 12 December 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

If anyone here ever obviously quit out on a game after someone won a match, I think they would be made fun of forever.

Much the way I make fun of my brother many, many years after he got upset and flipped over the Risk board after I started to utterly conquer him.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 12 December 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Anyone going to be up for a game tonight? I've not played any of you in AGES! GTA has been distracting me, so I might be a bit out of practice now, but I'd like a race or two. Round about, ooh, four hours from RIGHT NOW?

JimD (JimD), Monday, 12 December 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes, definitely! Have you still got that brilliant teddy emblem?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Ha, yeah. Glad you like it! :)

JimD (JimD), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh fucksocks! I got cut off WFC whilst searching for you!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

YES! We are go!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahhaa, Mario Circuit was sooo close!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Bliiimey, rainbow road can be good!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

:( :( :( :( :( :( :(

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

I SUCK SO FUCKING BAD!

Also, heh, me forgetting to even START in delfino square was a result of my phone ringing AND colette appearing on aim, bot at the same time.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

(which is why i had to drop out, sorry)

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I had no idea, I thought you'd gotten one of those spinning starts! Great games, and brilliant that we were both ROB.

Sky Garden is quickly becoming my favourite track, if only because it's completely absurd.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's cute. I need to learn it better, I took the wrong shortcut one time. I need to learn them all better though really, I guess taking a week off hasn't done me any favours...

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, I did this the other day on Choco Mountain, thinking jumping down from one road to the other would be a shortcut. It never crossed my mind that I probably did exactly the same the first time I played it on the N64 version.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

tonight anyone?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

should we make a big list of all the shortcuts?

on 2nd thought someone has surely done that already

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

OK I am going to get the DS/Mariokart bundle. Original MarioKart was one of the greatest things ever and I've been steadily disappointed with every sequel release. This sounds great! How is the battle mode???

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Sure, I'm up for tonight (it's becoming painfully aware that I'm always up for Mario Kart). The battle mode's fantastic, but you can't play it online. :(

It's great fun on local multiplayer though - you have to blow the balloons up by blowing into the DS!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

You can also blow up the balloons by holding down select (if, like I did, you get some really funny looks on the subway).

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, I think the DS has been out long enough now for people to realise that the guy sitting opposite them yelling "SPUNKY, ROLL OVER, ROLL OVER SPUNKY, NO, ROLL OVER" into his hands isn't actually a nutcase. Er, I hope, at least.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, sticking a portable game system up to your face and, uh, blowing as hard as you can still gets some glances!

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I was blowing some dust off the screen of my flatmate's PSP the other day and he was like "WTF are you doing, it's not a DS!"

JimD coulda been anything that he wanted to be (JimD), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

So, I can't sleep. Anyone want to get beat?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Wi-Fi?

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Too right! What are you doing up - aren't you a Britisher? (What am I doing up, more to the point?)

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

I am a Britisher with a flourish of insomnia and late nights.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

What is anyone doing up?

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh! Sleep is online too! Read this thread plz and we can three player!

(Jesus, Mario Circuit was close)

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah let's play gogogo !

sleep (sleep), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Wahey!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Jeffrey, while you may have pwned me, I won the competition of "who-can-lay-the-most-bananas-in-a-line-on-baby-park"!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

You have no idea how hard it is watching the word "sleep" dart about your gameboy screen at 4.30am!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

i know. bed soon.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

OK THIS IS GREAT FUN AND I NEED FRIEND CODEZ!

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

such close races!! i've gotta run, cya

xpost i'll forward you the codes

sleep (sleep), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

"Victory goes to sleep." sounds like some kind of proverb!

Great games, g'night!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Bedtime for me too. Multiplayer is an intensely good time.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 16 December 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Completely. I can imagine telling my grandkids how great it was when we used to all get together to try and organize races on our handhelds, "which only had two screens in my day!" It's a shame the whole "get online and find someone to be matched up with" thing won't last forever, really.

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 16 December 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

hey thanks.

You know I wish MKDS would let you reassign buttons. My giant American hands get really cramped up holding A. I wish I could assign a reachover to Y for accelerate.

I DON'T KNOW ANY SHORTCUTS YET :-(

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Friday, 16 December 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Anyone up for some havoc?

you guys suck

how are you, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

It's been a million years since I've had reliable wi-fi at home. I miss playing!

I'm going to be in NYC all weekend, and I've got some free time. I bet I can coerce some non-ilxor friends into hanging out if anyone feels like a FAP/MKDS session.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

You could probably count me in on that. Coming out to the FMU party?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

anybody on?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 January 2006 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Anyone? Anyone? Ferris?

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Aw, my girlfriends playin' animal crossing now.
Darnit. i wanna race.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm on!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Missed connection!

My wireless doesn't appear to be working anyway though. I'll play later tonight if I can fix it.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
5 - win or lose that race, almost always as a result of a blue-shell-on-the-line incident, cos nintnedo clearly didn't play-test two player modes enough to realise that blue shells really needed to be removed when there's only two of you, otherwise the whole game is determined by luck...whoever gets the first blue shell is going to hold onto it until the end then use it to win.

it's funny when thinly veiled attempts to land yourself in second place for the first lap or two ("oops, i crashed" "oops, i didn't get the starting boost") devolve into both of players blatantly stopping before every row of item boxes. it really would be nice if there was a green shells and banana peels-only mode.

au hasard (sleep), Monday, 20 March 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Are you all still playing this? Because, I mean, I still suck at this game and all, but I have it now.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 20 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

it really would be nice if there was a green shells and banana peels-only mode.

I was saying this to a friend the other day and he was all like "OMG KILLJOY!". How can he forget the times we had playing Worms with only grenades and bazooki?

And Chris, I've been madly craving playing this wifi again for a the last couple of weeks. As soon as I "find" an XP disc (if it's not within the next couple of days I think I'll die) I'll be right on that.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Cool.

Also, I do not have the friend code list, etc.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 03:43 (twenty years ago)

i am playing this at work Right Now after a long DS hiatus.

jeffreyzor, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

This thread revive just inspired me to have another go too, but I waited 4 minutes for WFC to find me a game, then it finally set me up in a one on one with some japanese kid who proceeded to drop out of the race after I pulled in front of him on the first corner, and.....pff, hate hate hate. Totally not worth it.

Would be up for ILX races though, assuming I can get them to work.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Wahey, wifi is go! Should we organize Mario Kart/Animal Crossing games in their respective threads?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Who's got the list? Sign me up. I will be beaten horribly by you.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Have done! :)

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Anyone up for a match sometime this weekend? I picked up my DS recently after a long hiatus and I am in looove all over again.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 24 March 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 25 March 2006 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Jon got me sick, so I will likely be in tonight playing GAMES.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I'll play.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I need the CODES. Do you see.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 25 March 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Did you get everyone's codes?

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 26 March 2006 03:26 (twenty years ago)

No, not yet. The e-mail I'm using here works.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Eep, I thought I sent them all to your email! Did it cut off all the earlier messages or something?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 26 March 2006 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, your e-mail just had your code in it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh piss. I'll compile them into one big list then.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Got it, thanks!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:53 (twenty years ago)

the first time you use the Bullet Bill item in this game, not knowing what to expect at all, God winks at you

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Saturday, 8 April 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

By God of course I mean Shigeru Miyamoto, but who's counting

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Saturday, 8 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

I felt that way the first time I got splattered by squid gunk.

And really I still feel that every time I go through the pinball chute.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 9 April 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

TOMBOT, what is your code?

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

(I have sold my copy of mariokart ds!!)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

(I thought everyone would be playing metroid hunters instead by now though...has nobody got it yet? I'm going to get colette to bring a copy back from boston for me).

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

(metroid hunters has the single most aggrivating control scheme i have ever encountered!)

sleep (sleep), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

{{}{(to be fair i didn't try it with the thumb strap thing, but with the stylus it's awful)]-]-]0]>

sleep (sleep), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

we don't have a code yet, still trying to get above bronze statues in 100cc over here! honeymooning gets in the way of serious kart practice. I have come relatively close to the staff time trial numbers on the figure 8! Hooray me. learning to do miniturbos is on the to-do.

metroid hunters looks sweet but I can't do FPS! I suck at videogames. Ally is still determined to nail 200 lines in Tetris DS standard mode, she will be online soon to kick everybody's ass I'm sure.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 10 April 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

Which characters/karts do you people drive? I have sentimental appreciation for playing as Toad or Yoshi but I'm beginning to think Donkey Kong might be more my style. Luigi sucks.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

ROB in the JCB digger usually, because frankly, who doesn't love robots and diggers?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I like Toad. The heavier players definitely have their advantages, but they just aren't usually my style. Let me know when you're in competitive shape, Tombot.

And anyone else who wants to play as well. I'm on vacation all this week and wouldn't mind a match or two.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
fuck you all!!! you all suck my nuts!

bob loblaw, Saturday, 29 April 2006 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

I still haven't played an online match.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

me either!

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Monday, 1 May 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

Me either, I can't get the WiFi to work at all on the damn thing.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

BECAUSE OF TOM'S SECURITY PERCAUTIONS

JW (ex machina), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

security precautions of being too lazy to hook up the wireless router to the DSL.
Does anybody else notice, though, that the DS kinda has shitty reception? Our iBook picks up signal way better than it does (imagine that, I know).

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I want to play sometime this week if anyone's down. Anyone who wants to play should:

1) Post friend code here. I don't think there's any harm in posting it publicly. Forwarding the huge email around is cumbersome.
2) Use IM to set up games. Refreshing this page for realtime conversation while people are trying to get their wifi to work is also cumbersome.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Friend Code:
146089
561453

AIM: brock808
gmail: enemy.airship@

sleep (sleep), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

We should start another thread entirely dealing with setting up friend codes for DS games, I think.

150cc is a bitch! I still can't manage to drift with any degree of skill. The AI is starting to make me feel stupid at every corner.

Does anybody manage to use the heavy characters with any skill? I love being able to pass people with impunity on the straighaways with Bowser but rape me jesus if I have to change directions at any point.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Have you unlocked ROB? You might like that better.

Laurah (laurah), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I was not able to unlock ROB yet since I spent most of yesterday figuring out who the fuck in what cart I was able to consistently place in 150cc races with. Dry Bones seems like the best bet so far.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody else notice, though, that the DS kinda has shitty reception? Our iBook picks up signal way better than it does

Yes, this is a big issue. Laptop/soundbridge/PSP/other wifi things are all fine running in our living room (2 rooms away from the wifi router) but the DS can't handle it. Which means I have to go into my bedroom to play online. Which is a pain in the arse.

Is the friend code email still doing the rounds? I've not had one yet, and I'll be wanting it soon so I can swap tetris/metroid codes with folks. A dedicated thread is probably a good idea, yeah.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, "I've not had one yet" should have read "I've not had one for ages". I did have a bunch originally though.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

My aim is them1n0rth1rds, but not googleproofed. I am now going through trying to get stars in everything. I've got all the 50s and 100s and most of the 150s but only a few of the 150 mirrors. Damn you, Rainbow Road!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

SUCCESS!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

this is too easy.

how many times can you play this thing?

i need to dig out my old mario kart on the snes or game cube. that was much more challenging.

i mean, even when i play with fat fucks like donkey kong or bowser on the ds mario kart, i still win! the difficulty level on this is clearly for dummies. or my mum or sister.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

You need to hang out with this guy!

Z S, Thursday, 3 July 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

I only just bought this after lusting after it for a while.

do people still do the wi-fi/friend code thing? I want to play multiplayer :(

salsa shark, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

I have no memory of racing slocki up-thread!!!!!!

this game is so amazing; I just wish nintendo could let go of friend codes and make us all happy : /

cozwn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

this thread is old skool. where did laura h go?

cozwn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

I wanna finally pick this up (maybe this weekend), but I guess that would mean I have to pick up a new wireless router thing too

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 January 2009 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

It's annoying that it took them so long to get WPA working, especially since even by the time the DS came out WEP was considered unreliable. (Basically, the new DSi finally supports it.)

Played the hell out of MK DS for a long time. It's wonderful, I'd break it out again in an instant.
