The cutscenes are the destroyer. I know the staff is all Tactics Ogre and FFT compliant and it looks pretty good, the gameplay shots I've seen, but 17 minutes of cutscene to start off that I can't skip? That means it has to suck. That equals sucking horribly. I'm not saying this will be as bad as Xenosaga, just, you know, it would appear to be treading dangerously close to some of the same pitfalls.

The FF12 demo that came with Dragon Quest 8 was laughable. My girlfriend, who actually enjoyed FF11 for a little while, even scoffed at it. Ugly, "quirky" battle system, wretched character design, stoopid monsters (much hyped independent monster AI = crap).

Plot and settingSetting
The game is set in the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics. In fact, this is the world where the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance characters based their Ivalice from. Vagrant Story took place in a country adjacent to Ivalice, Valendia.
Characters
Cast of Final Fantasy XII
Vaan (ヴァン Van) is an orphaned Hume street urchin who lost his parents in a plague when he was 12 years old and his only brother Reks 2 years after the Archadian Invasion of Dalmasca. He makes a living as Migelo's assistant, helping to distribute food rations to the Archadian soldiers, while stealing some for his own in the process. He is a cheerful and energetic and among his friends he is considered their leader. Vaan always dreams of someday becoming a sky pirate in command of his own airship.
Ashe Vanalgan Dalmasca (アーシェ Āshe) is a determined and independent 19-year-old Hume princess fighting to liberate her kingdom, Dalmasca, from the Archadian Empire. In addition to being the leader of the Dalmascan resistance movement, she is the sole heir to the throne, her father and eight brothers having been killed during the Archadian invasion. Ashe seeks not only freedom for her country, but also vengeance against the Archadian invaders and the former Dalmascan general Basch, who assassinated the king shortly after the Archadian army stormed the royal castle in Rabanastre.
Balthier Bunanza (バルフレア Barufurea) is a 22-year-old Hume sky pirate who pilots a small airship around the skies of Ivalice. He and his companion, Fran, prefer to remain outside of the war between the kingdoms of Ivalice.
Basch von Rosenberg (バッシュ Basshu) is a 36-year-old Hume who formerly served as a general in the Dalmascan army. During the Archadian assault on the royal castle, he discovered that the Dalmascan king had actually sold his people to the Archadians, and subsequently slew both the king and then Vaan's older brother, Reks, who found out about the crime. He is now regarded by the Dalmascans as a traitor.
Fran (フラン Furan) is a member of the rabbit-like Viera race and Balthier's partner aboard his airship. Although her preferred weapon is the bow and arrow, she is also quite competent with a variety of other weapons and is notably proficient in grappling and fencing. Fran is the only non-Hume (human) character in the main cast.
Penelo (パンネロ Pannero) is a Hume orphan who works as a dancer in a Rabanastre bazaar. She learned martial arts from her now-deceased older brother, a soldier, and though small in stature, she is perfectly capable of handling herself in sticky situations. She has known Vaan since childhood, and seems to secretly have romantic feelings towards him.
Vayne Cardas Solidor (ヴェイン Vein) is the 27-year-old crown prince of Archadia and first in line to inherit the throne from his father, Emperor Gramis. Though he wields a considerable amount of authority, Vayne does not abuse his power; rather, he makes an effort to foster a positive relationship with the conquered Dalmascans and insists that the welfare of the people is his foremost concern.
Larsa Ferrinas Solidor (ラーサー Rāsā) is the younger brother of Vayne Solidor and the fourth son of Gramis, eleventh emperor of Archadia. He is second in line to succeed Gramis as emperor and tries hard to gain the respect of his father and older brother. Larsa travels on occasion disguised as a commoner, adopting the alias Ramon so as to remain incognito. He joins the party midgame as a guest, but is not a playable character, however.
Plot
Final Fantasy XII takes place mostly in the kingdom of Dalmasca, a small city-state in the world of Ivalice. A neutral party in the past wars between its neighboring kingdoms of Archadia and Rozarria, Dalmasca was ultimately conquered by Archadia and reduced to the status of an occupied state under Archadian rule. Vaan, a street urchin living in the Dalmascan capital of Rabanastre, joins the underground Dalmascan resistance movement and participates in an assault on the royal castle, now occupied by Archadian troops. His involvement in the attack eventually brings him face to face with Ashe, the deposed princess of Dalmasca and the leader of the resistance faction.
Archadian Judge Masters, leaders of the Judges who first appeared in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, are featured prominently in the story. They are the supreme enforcers of Archadian law, and number five total: Gabranth, Ghis, Drace, Zargabaath, and Bergan.

THis is thw world we live in.A world where Square decides to never port Chrono Trigger(a big reason RPGs caught on here), to design movies you have to fight through to get the next scene and not call them FMVs but to call them RPGs because you have to level up to get powerful enough to get the next scene, and we are supposed to drink mysterious blue substances and Cocaine.

― Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 September 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)
Chrono Trigger was already going for about the same price used as new(new game+) and Also, there were many many many many fan sites dedicated to that game(which didn't have a series to back it up) in it's release period, which wasn't exactly the most prolific net period. What I'm saying is I don't think FFVII would have been as popular without CT.
In regards to 'analogy':Hell no.
THIS IS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.Square no longer makes games. They make movies.FMV games. You get to walk around for a bit, are forced to fight mostly repetetive battles, then you get another long clip, rinse repeat. Might as well play any old Sega CD FMV game. Exept I like to influence the outcome of games. There are marketing people who put together random things to make a 'mysterious' tasting blue drink, and ones who decide that they should make a drink called 'Cocaine.'
It's not an analogy, methaphor, simale; I'm simply showing a correllation between People marketing a crappy drink with a game's name, and making an insane drink with an insane one. It's what it says it is. A statement about the state of the world.

I beat that game 12 times and got the same ending 4 times.I'd heard rumours of 20+ endings, and beleived it until recently where I got number eleven, which is the rearest and (in the english version) lamest.Only claim to fame is that Crono talks.
All these other LATER games give you some slight variations in endings and you always have to play through fully. They spend so much time on cut scenes and shit that they CAN'T FIT more than one!
If I wanted to watch a cliche'd movie and be forced to do repetetive random battle, i'd put on W.E. and play GemFire on PIP.
Hell, even FFVI gave you the option of choosing which character/gender Cloud decides to end up with at the end...NO ONE I know thought FFVIII was worth playing.
I like INTERACTION. CT and 1943 are my favorite games.Sonic isn't a game. It's a passtime.

Character design notwithstanding, XII is supposed to be pretty much the least twee Final Fantasy, storywise. "Heavily political" and "grim" are the terms I keep seeing bandied about.
"This is the coming-of-age title for [Final Fantasy], the time when the series grows up and examines mature themes usually reserved for novels and major motion pictures. Death and sacrifice, two very prevalent themes of FFXII, are commonalities of war. We felt the need to convey this by bringing it to the forefront from the very start."-Akitoshi Kawazu

So you agrr new FF games succeed on looks and sound alone, then?
I can see how you might think that, if you ignore what I'm actually saying. FFVII is a really well-made game as regards continuous ramping up of the threats involved and clearly signposted "you can level up here if you want to kick ass ahead" sections (and giving you little kicks of achievement even if all you're doing is grinding). It's also designed around "do this task and you get more tasty FMV" which was a major and direct attraction to me at the time - the movies looked AMAZING by 1997 standards.

Square won't take the time to port games people are virtually SCREAMING for
I'm confused here. What is it you want Square to do? Chrono Trigger was "ported" to PS on Final Fantasy Collection which is still readily available on Amazon etc., so do you actually mean that you want a 2D sequel? Or a remake a la the DS FFIII? I don't get it.

I look back on previous posts, and I can see how one would miss my point.I speak in comparisons quite often.I think in relative terms, if this is confusing to you...well...I can understand it would be frustrating.
Chrono trigger had alot of interaction and no FMV. It also had relatively brief scripted sequences you could skip through quickly. It had multiple endings.
Since then, I can't think of a single Square game that follwed anything close(maybe Chrono Cross, but no one I've known that's played it has liked it at all. They said the Chrono part seemed tacked on).Why mention them not porting it?I'm saying the're content to sit on their haunches, spend more time animating/programming scripted sequences than programming gameplay.Porting is nothing but work.Lazy.
Since they became Square-Enix it's been boring.
Look at what this game's shaping up to be, and look at what their games used to be.I have nothing against scripted sequences(in moderation) I have nothing against modern graphics. The problem is Square is relying on them when they were obviously capable of so mush more.if they combined their old games' play with their new games' graphics they'd be unstoppable. But they don't.
They're lazy.
Did alot of the old guard leave when the Enix thing happened, or something?
To Tombot alone:If you can think of one more reason this game is going to be one of the worst games ever, please do so.Lead by example.
I don't see how anything I've said warrants this attack.Semi-literate? Are you under the impression a typo and spelling error are the same?Excuse me for being dysgraphic.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DysgraphiaNot asking you to get all politically correct, just explaining that not all typos are from a lack of spelling skills.I'm lucky when I type the right letters for the word I'm going for all day, let alone the right order!I DO have a sense of humour about my typos. But I DON'T take kindly to your general attitude.I may be blunt and occasionally crass, but you're simply rude.I can't be blamed for what you've inferred.

(And what the hell does dysgraphia have to do with not being able to type? I've got it and I'm fine with typing. It's even recommended that dysgraphics type instead of write, not because it's easier to correct mistakes but because it's easier to do in the first place. Find a rarer thing to blame your lousy typing on, dysgraphia is common enough for you to bump into someone who knows what it is).

In any case, typos have nothing to do with literacy. it's a TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR.
And yes, I do have aspergers.I've made my point.
There seems to be no more misunderstanding as to what my point was, and i no longer have anything to say if that is the case.I do find it strange that it took me writing a blamed DISSERTATION on this to get people to understand that comparison is a good way of determining the value of something...
Even SUCK is a relative term! In Brazil, the Master System DOESN'T COME SLOSE TO SUCKING. It RULES there. Here, it's basically POINTLESS.I'm NOT going into why. Wiki it.Point HERE is that comparing GOOD and BAD things is a good way to see how much BETTER or WORSE they are.
Just saying "That's STUPID because...IT'S STUPID!" Isn't productive.Neither is "That's stupid because...I don't like it!" or "...it's difficult!" Not good enough.Relative terms need a baseline.Mine in this case is CT.Your might be different. So what?you know what they say about opinions and assholes...they're both all over ILX.
Requisite thread exit insult:TOMBOT, you are an angry angry douche of a manchild. That, my good man is turnabout. Fair play, and true. I no longer feel any need to use any level of tact with you."My thread!"Public forum. Too bad, so sad.I weep the tears of a crocodillian while I draw a bow across the globe's most liliputian chordophone.
Feel free to express your opinions about the subject I ever post a thread about. If you act the same, expect a simple report to a mod, as you're worth no more of a my time.

hahaha wtf is this post even aboutlinearity is obviously a relative thing, and ff12 looks to be the least linear final fantasy game (heaps of side quests you dont have to finish, easy access to monsters you cant hope to beat, pretty high customerisation of characters etc). having said that, making something less linear does not necessarily make it better

I think the big difference is that there is a solid game behind all of Mario's appearance, whereas the breakthrough Final Fantasy game was an empty-feeling exercise in cutscene masturbation that subsequent games in the series have extended into the biggest wankfest on the market outside of the Madden franchise and the Grand Theft Auto games.

What are you, 14?
An RPG is something that should allow you to DO WHAT YOU WANT and get different outcomes.Side-quests alone do not an RPG make.
Shooting games are SHOOTING GAMES. Win/lose. If win, count points. The End. you have to DO things the whole time. Constant interaction. If you sit still, you lose.Stop being antagonistic because I disagree with you.

― s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 November 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)
Shooting, killing, recieving damage, and dying. That;s interaction.
STOP BEING ANTAGONISTIC.
FF games aren't interactive. If you don't do what they want you to, you cannot advance. You then still there for extended period WATCHING the game.
There are also many things that you can do that have NO effect on advancing.
I wanted to avoid binging up CT again, but you've forced my hand.
You can beat the game and many many points, especially with new game+.The side quests greatly effect the outcome wen you do beat it, and any times you sit and punch the A button last for 3-4 minutes at most, and are rare.
Interactive. Based on exploration. Largely non-linear. That is an RPG.
Linear. Based on introducing the next scene. Linear. That is FF.

OTFM, she's deleted herself from the Internets and played CHRONO TRIGGER ever since.
I never her.

It feels less a survey than a curiously ornate harangue. Her percussive style -- one short declarative sentence after another -- eventually wearies the reader; her diction functions not so much to elicit the secrets of books as to hammer them into submission.... The weary reader longs for the mercy of a qualification, a doubt, a hesitation; there is little sense, in her uncompanionable prose, of exploration occuring before our eyes, of tentative motions of thought reflected in a complex syntax.

Basically, the entire revival is an attempt to goad me into exploding. This is funny. Not aggravating.
Darr.Do you want my cocaine, or something? If so, you'll need to search the itnernet for 20 minutes and find another post of mine from 4 years ago and make THAT into an image and then upload it and post it here again. And you still won't get my cocaine, because...I don't have any.
