1. The opening FMV sequence will be 17 minutes long and impossible to skip.

2. You also aren't able to skip any of the other FMV cutscenes in the game.

3. To increase the difficulty of the game, save points have been sparsely scattered throughout. You get a "continue" option instead of the ability to save frequently.

4. The advertisement

5. Game-related merchandise announced so far includes a limited-edition controller, a limited-edition PS2, and a limited edition drink.

6. The rabbit stripper bitch with the bow that Laura posted to start off the DUMBASS CHARACTER DESIGN thread? One of the main characters

7. I quote from Slashdot: "Having to train on the same monster endlessly has now become a feature

8. I am as yet unable to find anybody who has anything nice to say about the new combat system (either just describing sort of how it works or flat-out panning it)

I'm not up to 10 yet, help me out.

I really figured you'd be with me on this one.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:27 (twenty years ago)

everything you list does sound atrocious, but (lmao butts) IT'S MADE BY THE FFT & VAGRANT STORY DUDES SO I CAN'T NOT BE A LITTLE STOKED ABOUT IT. this has basically become the last straw for me re: skweenix, my last crumb of hope that they can pull something awesome out their ass. also, there were elements of FFX and agh FFX-2 that I liked a lot so uh i dunno. i'm expecting it to be like the best Japanese RPGs i've played, in that it will dazzle and enrage me in equal measures and I will come away from it feeling bloated with disappointment.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

so basically I am with you but I won't admit it until I've wasted 50 bucks a year from now.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Supposedly it's still on track to go gold sometime soon. Last I checked.

The cutscenes are the destroyer. I know the staff is all Tactics Ogre and FFT compliant and it looks pretty good, the gameplay shots I've seen, but 17 minutes of cutscene to start off that I can't skip? That means it has to suck. That equals sucking horribly. I'm not saying this will be as bad as Xenosaga, just, you know, it would appear to be treading dangerously close to some of the same pitfalls.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can't really argue with that. I've always liked the cut scenes, but it's basically unconscionable in the year 2006 to have unskippable cinemas in your games. I almost think they're just doing it to be jerks at this point, which possibly makes them n01z3 or something.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Friday, 3 February 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I fucking hate cutscenes. Hate them. And I hate the FF series for making people want them.

The FF12 demo that came with Dragon Quest 8 was laughable. My girlfriend, who actually enjoyed FF11 for a little while, even scoffed at it. Ugly, "quirky" battle system, wretched character design, stoopid monsters (much hyped independent monster AI = crap).

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 4 February 2006 04:19 (twenty years ago)

If FFTA is any credible source, the bunny strippers are lesbians too, because there's no other way for an all-female species to make babies. Unless they split like cells.

Or that all-male race of rasta lizards fucks them and there's a 50/50 chance of a bunny or a lizard.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:00 (twenty years ago)

I think the latter sounds more Japanesey. I mean if that's not in the documented Square-Enix Mythos then you know it's going to end up in the fucking doujinshi w/in 30 seconds of the game's release

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Can we truly say that we as a people are better than a race of nothing but rasta lizards and bunny strippers?

Becuz i'm not ready to make that leap.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Altho, as Tombot mentions, one of the bits about the doujinshi that's ever-reliant is that any character shown in any FF game, even for a scene, will be portrayed as either fucking or getting fucked by every other character in every FF game.

For example, who knew that Rikku's crewmates on that flying ship had such voracious sexual appetites?

today's bit from Joystiq

The Final Fantasy XII Potion drink announced back in December has finally been unveiled to the public in Japan, and samplers are willing to allow that the clear blue beverage offers a "mysterious taste."

Shall we speculate on the "mysterious taste"? Is it think and proteiny? Is it the distilled sweat of bunny strippers? what could it be?

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 24 September 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

He's an orphan who dreams of one day becoming a butt pir...er, sky pirate!

Plot and setting
Setting

The game is set in the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics. In fact, this is the world where the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance characters based their Ivalice from. Vagrant Story took place in a country adjacent to Ivalice, Valendia.

Characters

Cast of Final Fantasy XII

Vaan (ヴァン Van) is an orphaned Hume street urchin who lost his parents in a plague when he was 12 years old and his only brother Reks 2 years after the Archadian Invasion of Dalmasca. He makes a living as Migelo's assistant, helping to distribute food rations to the Archadian soldiers, while stealing some for his own in the process. He is a cheerful and energetic and among his friends he is considered their leader. Vaan always dreams of someday becoming a sky pirate in command of his own airship.

Ashe Vanalgan Dalmasca (アーシェ Āshe) is a determined and independent 19-year-old Hume princess fighting to liberate her kingdom, Dalmasca, from the Archadian Empire. In addition to being the leader of the Dalmascan resistance movement, she is the sole heir to the throne, her father and eight brothers having been killed during the Archadian invasion. Ashe seeks not only freedom for her country, but also vengeance against the Archadian invaders and the former Dalmascan general Basch, who assassinated the king shortly after the Archadian army stormed the royal castle in Rabanastre.

Balthier Bunanza (バルフレア Barufurea) is a 22-year-old Hume sky pirate who pilots a small airship around the skies of Ivalice. He and his companion, Fran, prefer to remain outside of the war between the kingdoms of Ivalice.

Basch von Rosenberg (バッシュ Basshu) is a 36-year-old Hume who formerly served as a general in the Dalmascan army. During the Archadian assault on the royal castle, he discovered that the Dalmascan king had actually sold his people to the Archadians, and subsequently slew both the king and then Vaan's older brother, Reks, who found out about the crime. He is now regarded by the Dalmascans as a traitor.

Fran (フラン Furan) is a member of the rabbit-like Viera race and Balthier's partner aboard his airship. Although her preferred weapon is the bow and arrow, she is also quite competent with a variety of other weapons and is notably proficient in grappling and fencing. Fran is the only non-Hume (human) character in the main cast.

Penelo (パンネロ Pannero) is a Hume orphan who works as a dancer in a Rabanastre bazaar. She learned martial arts from her now-deceased older brother, a soldier, and though small in stature, she is perfectly capable of handling herself in sticky situations. She has known Vaan since childhood, and seems to secretly have romantic feelings towards him.

Vayne Cardas Solidor (ヴェイン Vein) is the 27-year-old crown prince of Archadia and first in line to inherit the throne from his father, Emperor Gramis. Though he wields a considerable amount of authority, Vayne does not abuse his power; rather, he makes an effort to foster a positive relationship with the conquered Dalmascans and insists that the welfare of the people is his foremost concern.

Larsa Ferrinas Solidor (ラーサー Rāsā) is the younger brother of Vayne Solidor and the fourth son of Gramis, eleventh emperor of Archadia. He is second in line to succeed Gramis as emperor and tries hard to gain the respect of his father and older brother. Larsa travels on occasion disguised as a commoner, adopting the alias Ramon so as to remain incognito. He joins the party midgame as a guest, but is not a playable character, however.

Plot

Final Fantasy XII takes place mostly in the kingdom of Dalmasca, a small city-state in the world of Ivalice. A neutral party in the past wars between its neighboring kingdoms of Archadia and Rozarria, Dalmasca was ultimately conquered by Archadia and reduced to the status of an occupied state under Archadian rule. Vaan, a street urchin living in the Dalmascan capital of Rabanastre, joins the underground Dalmascan resistance movement and participates in an assault on the royal castle, now occupied by Archadian troops. His involvement in the attack eventually brings him face to face with Ashe, the deposed princess of Dalmasca and the leader of the resistance faction.

Archadian Judge Masters, leaders of the Judges who first appeared in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, are featured prominently in the story. They are the supreme enforcers of Archadian law, and number five total: Gabranth, Ghis, Drace, Zargabaath, and Bergan.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

www.drinkcocaine.com

THis is thw world we live in.
A world where Square decides to never port Chrono Trigger(a big reason RPGs caught on here), to design movies you have to fight through to get the next scene and not call them FMVs but to call them RPGs because you have to level up to get powerful enough to get the next scene, and we are supposed to drink mysterious blue substances and Cocaine.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

Were you making some sort of analogy? Because that looks like a load of mangled shit to me.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 25 September 2006 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

Chrono Trigger(a big reason RPGs caught on here),

I think you've misspelt "Final Fantasy VII"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 September 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

No one I knew had heard of that game at the time.
BECAUSE IT WASN'T OUT YET.

Chrono Trigger was already going for about the same price used as new(new game+) and
Also, there were many many many many fan sites dedicated to that game(which didn't have a series to back it up) in it's release period, which wasn't exactly the most prolific net period.
What I'm saying is I don't think FFVII would have been as popular without CT.

In regards to 'analogy':
Hell no.

THIS IS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.
Square no longer makes games.
They make movies.
FMV games. You get to walk around for a bit, are forced to fight mostly repetetive battles, then you get another long clip, rinse repeat. Might as well play any old Sega CD FMV game. Exept I like to influence the outcome of games.
There are marketing people who put together random things to make a 'mysterious' tasting blue drink, and ones who decide that they should make a drink called 'Cocaine.'

It's not an analogy, methaphor, simale; I'm simply showing a correllation between People marketing a crappy drink with a game's name, and making an insane drink with an insane one.
It's what it says it is. A statement about the state of the world.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Chrono Trigger's success led to the mainstream acceptance of FFVII; I don't think that's a controversial statement.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure the hardcore were pretty excited about CT, but the lesson that Square learned is that the hardcore aren't worth shit when you can adapt to a new technology (CDs) and attract people who wouldn't have touched the genre with a ten-foot pole.

So: reasons why Final Fantasy VII sold:

1. http://www.altpop.com/stc/pics-large/ff7ost.jpg
2. grindy gameplay
3. actual Japan weirdcraziness in your own house!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Erm no one's forcing you to buy the games gzeus?

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

(my point 1 there is actually points 1 and 2: soundtrack and OMG the graphics)

If half of the people who bought FFVII had heard of Chrono Trigger I'd be amazed.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

In the US, Chrono Trigger got almost the same amount of hype and ad-blitzing as FFVII.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

FF7 sold well because of a big advertisement campaign that only showed the prerendered movies from it.

a.b. (alanbanana), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't remember any ads for Chrono Trigger. I remember there was actually a TV commercial for FF7 that made me go "OMG! You mean there are FF's 4 thru 6?"

FF7 definitely isn't my favorite Final Fantasy, but is it notable for being the only one in the series with ballz? (bishounen villain notwithstanding)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 25 September 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Do you mean literal balls? E.g. those orange spheres that dropped serious AP?

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 25 September 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

So you agrr new FF games succeed on looks and sound alone, then?
Because that was my point...

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

The last good one was FF6 on the Snes.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 25 September 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

I remember seeing Chrono Trigger ads pretty much nonstop during my Saturday morning cartoon binges.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I remember every magazine having a different walkthrough.
And I'd get pissed when they'd miss an awesome tweak in a side-quest that gave you a different ending when you beat the game ata certain point...

I beat that game 12 times and got the same ending 4 times.
I'd heard rumours of 20+ endings, and beleived it until recently where I got number eleven, which is the rearest and (in the english version) lamest.
Only claim to fame is that Crono talks.

All these other LATER games give you some slight variations in endings and you always have to play through fully.
They spend so much time on cut scenes and shit that they CAN'T FIT more than one!

If I wanted to watch a cliche'd movie and be forced to do repetetive random battle, i'd put on W.E. and play GemFire on PIP.

Hell, even FFVI gave you the option of choosing which character/gender Cloud decides to end up with at the end...
NO ONE I know thought FFVIII was worth playing.

I like INTERACTION. CT and 1943 are my favorite games.
Sonic isn't a game. It's a passtime.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

Cloud wasn't in FFVI.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 25 September 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

GZeus stop making me hate my favorite game.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 25 September 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

so i missed an "I"
Prepare a cease and desist before drafting that lawsuit.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

is it notable for being the only one in the series with ballz?

Character design notwithstanding, XII is supposed to be pretty much the least twee Final Fantasy, storywise. "Heavily political" and "grim" are the terms I keep seeing bandied about.

"This is the coming-of-age title for [Final Fantasy], the time when the series grows up and examines mature themes usually reserved for novels and major motion pictures. Death and sacrifice, two very prevalent themes of FFXII, are commonalities of war. We felt the need to convey this by bringing it to the forefront from the very start."

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

It does seem like they've been making it for a dozen years by this stage.

So you agrr new FF games succeed on looks and sound alone, then?

I can see how you might think that, if you ignore what I'm actually saying. FFVII is a really well-made game as regards continuous ramping up of the threats involved and clearly signposted "you can level up here if you want to kick ass ahead" sections (and giving you little kicks of achievement even if all you're doing is grinding). It's also designed around "do this task and you get more tasty FMV" which was a major and direct attraction to me at the time - the movies looked AMAZING by 1997 standards.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

What's the point of different endings if the plot throughout the game is exactly the same? If that even works then the plot must be so weak and unconnected to the ending that the plot isn't exactly the main selling point of the game anyway, so how would it matter when talking about which the better game is?

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

The plot does change if you embark on the side-quests.
It also depends on WHEN you beat the boss, thus making a different ending NECCESARY for the plot to make sense.
Don't talk shit about games you've never played, troll.
Or are you just a 13 year old girl who'd RATHER watch W.E. but have no cable/sattelite?
Again, you're touting linearity and predictability as SELLING POINTS.
What about GAMEPLAY?
How is something a Role Playing Game if the only role you play is another character forced to do what the game says or die/do nothing?
That's not even a GAME.
it's a movie.
it's Night Trap with a better plot and clips.

So, YES?
That's EXACTLY WHAT YOU JUST SAID. "It makes gameplay all obvious and then dangles scripted sequences in front of you as somek ind of reward."

Does this mean the whole bloody law thing from the FFTA battles is in this? It was annoyng having to walk back and forth between cities before battles just so that you'd be allowed to use physical attacks.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Are you under the impression that vehement=angry?
And that having an opinion about games means I don't have a life or work?
Because A: I'm not angry, i'm just annoyed that games have taken a turn away from play and towards showing pretty colors. What incentive is there to get anything new?

B: I teach english to foreign(generally asian) people and spent the evening helping a client of 2 years move. Got old and new computers in return(to expensive to ship overseas).

So, if you're done judging me, and gmaes you don't even remember, this is was my point to begin with. Sorry it wont over your head:

The GZeus (The GZeus), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

Square decides to never port Chrono Trigger

Square won't take the time to port games people are virtually SCREAMING for

I'm confused here. What is it you want Square to do? Chrono Trigger was "ported" to PS on Final Fantasy Collection which is still readily available on Amazon etc., so do you actually mean that you want a 2D sequel? Or a remake a la the DS FFIII? I don't get it.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

Er, I meant Final Fantasy Chronicles, of course.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

Was it ever released over here though? There can't be much demand for an old snes game that hardly anyone on this continent would be nostalgic for, amongst people who can't download an emulator.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's already been determined that this is going to a piece of shite.
How bad is a relative term so we need a basis for comparison.
Why they would do this is also a good point of discussion.
That's what I'm getting at.

PS: Square never 'ported' any SNES games to the PSX. They used emulation. Mediocre emulation.
Lazy.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

Tombot.

I look back on previous posts, and I can see how one would miss my point.
I speak in comparisons quite often.
I think in relative terms, if this is confusing to you...well...I can understand it would be frustrating.

Chrono trigger had alot of interaction and no FMV. It also had relatively brief scripted sequences you could skip through quickly.
It had multiple endings.

Since then, I can't think of a single Square game that follwed anything close(maybe Chrono Cross, but no one I've known that's played it has liked it at all. They said the Chrono part seemed tacked on).
Why mention them not porting it?
I'm saying the're content to sit on their haunches, spend more time animating/programming scripted sequences than programming gameplay.
Porting is nothing but work.
Lazy.

Since they became Square-Enix it's been boring.

Look at what this game's shaping up to be, and look at what their games used to be.
I have nothing against scripted sequences(in moderation) I have nothing against modern graphics.
The problem is Square is relying on them when they were obviously capable of so mush more.
if they combined their old games' play with their new games' graphics they'd be unstoppable. But they don't.

They're lazy.

Did alot of the old guard leave when the Enix thing happened, or something?

To Tombot alone:
If you can think of one more reason this game is going to be one of the worst games ever, please do so.
Lead by example.

I don't see how anything I've said warrants this attack.
Semi-literate? Are you under the impression a typo and spelling error are the same?
Excuse me for being dysgraphic.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysgraphia
Not asking you to get all politically correct, just explaining that not all typos are from a lack of spelling skills.
I'm lucky when I type the right letters for the word I'm going for all day, let alone the right order!
I DO have a sense of humour about my typos.
But I DON'T take kindly to your general attitude.
I may be blunt and occasionally crass, but you're simply rude.
I can't be blamed for what you've inferred.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

I quite liked the sphere system, it made it a bit more interesting knowing that you were two spheres away from some ability, or +4 in some statistic, instead of it all happening invisibly while you levelled up for an hour. The license system doesn't look too bad, but I never liked having to buy magic (is it the individual spells you have to buy). The gamibit system looks confusing, if it does what I think it does then is there any point in actually using the controller when fighting? If they're coming up with ways around having to do stuff then why add the stuff to the game in the first place? You may as well just gain levels by walking around, the same way you'd get money in FF8

(And what the hell does dysgraphia have to do with not being able to type? I've got it and I'm fine with typing. It's even recommended that dysgraphics type instead of write, not because it's easier to correct mistakes but because it's easier to do in the first place. Find a rarer thing to blame your lousy typing on, dysgraphia is common enough for you to bump into someone who knows what it is).

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

Have you got aspergers GZeus? You seem unable to let this go....

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

I can type period.
Writing is like a 5 year old who didn't study.
All I know is I often type the same mistakes as I write, but it's alot faster, easier on the brain(headaches from writing) and I can fix the mistakes more easily.

In any case, typos have nothing to do with literacy. it's a TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR.

And yes, I do have aspergers.
I've made my point.

There seems to be no more misunderstanding as to what my point was, and i no longer have anything to say if that is the case.
I do find it strange that it took me writing a blamed DISSERTATION on this to get people to understand that comparison is a good way of determining the value of something...

Even SUCK is a relative term! In Brazil, the Master System DOESN'T COME SLOSE TO SUCKING. It RULES there.
Here, it's basically POINTLESS.
I'm NOT going into why. Wiki it.
Point HERE is that comparing GOOD and BAD things is a good way to see how much BETTER or WORSE they are.

Just saying "That's STUPID because...IT'S STUPID!" Isn't productive.
Neither is "That's stupid because...I don't like it!" or "...it's difficult!" Not good enough.
Relative terms need a baseline.
Mine in this case is CT.
Your might be different.
So what?
you know what they say about opinions and assholes...they're both all over ILX.

Though it still has its own brand of Chocobos, Moogles (which have been redesigned, by the way), Airships, and other Square Enix staples, its flavor is decidedly European. This newfound direction and influence goes a long way in making old hats feel new again, and this fresh approach affects everything from the style and sound of the game to what would normally be recognizable character archetypes. It's somewhat evocative of what a videogame would be like if Terry Gilliam was involved... sort of an "Adventures of Baron Munchausen on Magicite."

I'm sure it is NOTHING LIKE THIS AT ALL. God I hate RPG fans

roc u like a § (ex machina), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yasumi Mitsuno (Vagrant Story, Tactics Ogre) really outdid himself by capturing the elements of storytelling that TV shows like Lost and 24 have built a following on -- by evolving the personalities, histories, and motives of characters you already thought you knew, but didn't. There really is no limit to how many great things can be said about the story.

roc u like a § (ex machina), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Now a big mistake that many have made when coming into FF12, of course, is that the new battle mechanic is action-oriented and not turn-based. In reality, Final Fantasy XII still relies on a turn-based engine (much as the old games did), but it just disguises that fact with a clever use of time bars and simultaneous character movement.

i'm a little more than an hour in and i'm enjoying it. nothing great, but it's fun. i like the battle system more than i like KOTOR's. even though they're pretty much the same. my main complaint is the character design. the only non human characters i've seen so far look like...lame lizard guys. and my first big fight was with....a tomato thing.

based on the first hour or so of play, i would rate it a 7 out of 10.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Friday, 3 November 2006 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd go 7/10 so far. I'm a couple more hours in, just wasted some time getting Vaan to Lv. 4 for the hell of it and am now on the Sunstone quest with Penelo just joining my party.
Supposedly the story really kicks in at about the 10 hr. mark.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 3 November 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

But is it a GAME?
Can you do what you like? Go places in the 'incorrect' order?
Go exploring, even if it doesn't advance the story?
Is PLAYING more fun that watching?

The GZeus (The GZeus), Friday, 3 November 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

the answer to all of those questions is yes.
it is a game, because...that's what it is. you can pretty much go where you want right from the start. nothing like GTA, but it's fun.
i ran around in the desert for a few hours, just leveling up and finding treasure. isn't every game more fun to play than watch?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 4 November 2006 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

Not all games. FFVIII and many of their ilk are just movies that you kinda move around betwen scenes.

hahaha wtf is this post even about
linearity is obviously a relative thing, and ff12 looks to be the least linear final fantasy game (heaps of side quests you dont have to finish, easy access to monsters you cant hope to beat, pretty high customerisation of characters etc). having said that, making something less linear does not necessarily make it better

webber (webber), Monday, 6 November 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

i dont know what customerisation means either

Mario raping Princess Peach = worst minigame imaginable.

Hating overbearingly twee nonsense does not automatically mean someone likes overbearingly grim nonsense; GTA can go fuck the same ear FFXII is violating.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

This game is not nearly as twee as you would think. Well, the new moogles are but Vaan doesn't whine as much as earlier leads and the "rabbit stripper bitch" Fran barely has any lines, but when she does talk it's like this monotone Scandinavian accent, not cutesy.
Also, the way the story is told it doesn't try to make you GIVE A SHIT about the characters' FEELINGS the way the other FFs did.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

so i take it you guys haven't gotten to the "humping bunny stripper" sequence, then

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

dan, my point was that i - and probably the same people complaining that ff is too twee - will quite happily play mario (or katamari, or super monkey ball, or animal crossing, or ...), without its twee feel becoming a problem. why is final fantasy different? because it is far cooler to rail against on the internet?

I think the big difference is that there is a solid game behind all of Mario's appearance, whereas the breakthrough Final Fantasy game was an empty-feeling exercise in cutscene masturbation that subsequent games in the series have extended into the biggest wankfest on the market outside of the Madden franchise and the Grand Theft Auto games.

They're not like movies at all. Christ.

What are you, 14?

An RPG is something that should allow you to DO WHAT YOU WANT and get different outcomes.
Side-quests alone do not an RPG make.

Shooting games are SHOOTING GAMES. Win/lose. If win, count points. The End. you have to DO things the whole time. Constant interaction. If you sit still, you lose.
Stop being antagonistic because I disagree with you.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

i just prefer my games to be interactive, not just like watching something happen. it's okay, we don't have to agree on that point.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 November 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

THAT'S MY POINT.

Shooting, killing, recieving damage, and dying. That;s interaction.

STOP BEING ANTAGONISTIC.

FF games aren't interactive. If you don't do what they want you to, you cannot advance.
You then still there for extended period WATCHING the game.

There are also many things that you can do that have NO effect on advancing.

I wanted to avoid binging up CT again, but you've forced my hand.

You can beat the game and many many points, especially with new game+.
The side quests greatly effect the outcome wen you do beat it, and any times you sit and punch the A button last for 3-4 minutes at most, and are rare.

Interactive. Based on exploration. Largely non-linear. That is an RPG.

Linear. Based on introducing the next scene. Linear. That is FF.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's the best console RPG out there.
I considerit what to shoot for. The only other way to go and still call it an RPG is to base it on D&D rules, and there were several releases for XBox at least that followed that trend. 1st and third person, more action based battles, but the SYSTEM of gameplay was total D&D. The classes, the clans, the armor, the shops, the magic...

My brother in law spent months on one game. So many quests, so many people to meet, so muh you could do other than plod towards a 'goal' that the game forces you to without really challenging you.

Was there really any point in reviving this thread?

Yes.

Sony markets their systems to stoners and magazine editors. They're selling to their stockholders more than the end user.

haha i might offended by this if i knew what the hell this thread was talking abt!

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

though at certain points of my life i've certainly been a member of both aforementioned groups. (not the former anymore though)

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, M@tt it's nothing directed at YOU. I'm just saying they made the specs really high so as to impress people in your profession.
Mush like if a bass manufacturer made some fancy schmancy bass with X features, Y electronics and Z special woods, fanned frets, 6+ strings...
Reviewers would drool and need new pants, but the bass would still cost 4k USD for the basic model, and it's not easy to write/play music for/on it...
I think that's way too convoluted, but I suck at truncating.

no, but i can send you the appropriate number of Wii points and you can download one from nintendo.

yep, ps3 is hard to develop for. but that's always been true of sony hardware.

How you been man you beat Chrono Trigger yet? I beat it years ago I can give you some tips if you like :)

Darramouss! (Darramouss), Saturday, 27 January 2007 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

Why is GZeus still posting on ILG? I though he was banned! This thread is a good illustration of why!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Saturday, 27 January 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

It's months old and was revived to increase the prevalence of that sentiment.
In reality all it illustrates is that people here are willing to crucify someone for agreeing with them if the manner in which it's done it isn't to their liking.

Lukewarm Watery G. Tornado is Sick of Fucking His User Name (The GZeus), Saturday, 27 January 2007 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, we tend to only ban him for a day or so until he cools down. it takes him a bit to get revved up again.

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 27 January 2007 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree. Also his martyr complex is real pain.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Sunday, 28 January 2007 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

It's more of a persecution complex.
It would be less obvious if people would stop perscuting anyone who's serious.
I just don't use sarcasm, and consider my opinions for a long time before espressing them.
People here somehow see that as an attack. That's bizzare.

Lukewarm Watery G. Tornado is Sick of Fucking His User Name (The GZeus), Sunday, 28 January 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

John Updike wrote about Sexual Personae:

It feels less a survey than a curiously ornate harangue. Her percussive style -- one short declarative sentence after another -- eventually wearies the reader; her diction functions not so much to elicit the secrets of books as to hammer them into submission.... The weary reader longs for the mercy of a qualification, a doubt, a hesitation; there is little sense, in her uncompanionable prose, of exploration occuring before our eyes, of tentative motions of thought reflected in a complex syntax.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 28 January 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

GZeus hasn't been bad on this thread since it was revived! I don't see what the problem is.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 28 January 2007 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

You mean he got through a whole post without capitalising one word?

Darramouss! (Darramouss), Sunday, 28 January 2007 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

People dislike the WAY I talk.
I use sarcasm for it's intended purpose(sheathing an insult by speaking the opposite of what you mean) as opposed to being perpetually sardonic.
I speak literally and frankly(and yes, I can be crass).
Again, people take that as an attack, and then proceed to use sarcasm for its intended purpose(rare here) and then slowly ramp into full-on insults at me.
Somehow my comebacks, since they are stated literally, are worse, and then mods begin trolling me until THOSE comebacks induce them to banning me or to post this:
http://www.iengraverock.com/images/issues.jpg
in a yellow card.

Basically, the entire revival is an attempt to goad me into exploding.
This is funny.
Not aggravating.

Darr.
Do you want my cocaine, or something?
If so, you'll need to search the itnernet for 20 minutes and find another post of mine from 4 years ago and make THAT into an image and then upload it and post it here again.
And you still won't get my cocaine, because...I don't have any.

Lukewarm Watery G. Tornado Still Rules at Doom (The GZeus), Sunday, 28 January 2007 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

Do either of you have anything to say about VIDEO GAMES?

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Sunday, 28 January 2007 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

I like video games they are fun. Oblivion's my fave single player game at the moment. The scope of what you can get up to is amazing. My fave Online game is 2142 Battlefield for similar reasons. :)

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

I actually don't have a problem with him.
I don't think he's a troll, I think he's schizo, or something.
It's amusing.
Not that I don't think he should get help if that IS the case. I have a friends who's schizo. He has cool ideas, but it's always better when he can tell what's a good idea and what should be made into a work of fiction.

I ANY CASE. If a really aweful baseball game comes out for the Wii I'll get one.
That's as video game related as I can get right now. I'm so damned physically sick right now...

three months pass...
I can't remember. Did we ban both darramous AND Gzeus, or what?

also, where's laura been?

kingfish, Monday, 14 May 2007 05:56 (nineteen years ago)

Both were banned (thank goodness in GZeus' case. Pyscho that he was etc etc, can't remember why darramous was banned!). Laura? I don't know.

kv_nol, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think Darra was properly banned, he just chose not to come back. I didn't ban GZ either, but I yellowcarded them both. Maybe they hooked up? When will we get mod powerz back again, so the saga can continue?

g-kit, Monday, 14 May 2007 08:25 (nineteen years ago)
